Santa Margarita Catholic High School continues to move forward and to build upon much of what you set as standards for others to follow. Our youngsters continue to demonstrate high degrees of success in the academic realm. We are delighted that five seniors have merited recognition as 2007 National Merit Semifinalists and that another 13 classmates earned recognition as National Merit Commended Students. One of this stellar group also earned a perfect score on the ACT test. Quite a few of our most recent graduates, 117 in all, were recognized as AP Scholars: 1- a National AP Scholar; 37- AP Scholars with Distinction; 25- AP Scholars with Honor; 54- as AP Scholars. I share these statistics with you in order to illustrate the seriousness of academic pursuit common on this campus, and, besides, we’re proud just as we expect you are, too. Athletic success is keeping pace, also. Our Girls’ Volleyball team won the 1st league title in the newly formed Trinity league and claimed 2nd place in CIF-SS. Boys’ Cross Country had a terrific season and ended with a 3rd place in State. Football has received a lot of press with their highly successful season against the perennially local powerhouses and progressed all the way to semi-finals in Division I CIF-SS. A sad note to all that knew or had Sr. Anne Perrin for math class. Sister lost her battle with cancer this fall while surrounded by the members of her order in their French motherhouse. Although she was no longer a member of our faculty, many on this campus miss her and remember her fondly. SMCHS senior, Teresa Henisey, was one of only six college-bound students in California and one of 91 in the U.S. and Canada to achieve a 36, the highest possible composite score, on the June 2006 national test administration of the ACT. About 20,000 California students and 410,000 from across the nation completed the ACT college-entrance exam on June 10, 2006. The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36, and a student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores. For purposes of comparison, the average composite score for the national high school graduating class of 2005 was 20.9. Some students also take ACT’s optional Writing Test, but the score for that test is reported separately and is not included in the ACT composite score. Academics - highlights from the fall semester In a letter recognizing this exceptional achievement, ACT chief executive officer Richard L. Ferguson pointed out that Teresa should have a choice of the widest possible range of future educational options. ACT scores are accepted by virtually all U.S. colleges and universities. In addition to her pursuit of academic excellence Teresa is engaged in a myriad of extra curricular activities. She has been a member of the Girl Scouts since kindergarten having earned her Bronze and Silver Award and completed her project for the Gold Award. Teresa is also an accomplished musician who plays the viola in the SMCHS orchestra. 2007 National Merit Semifinalists Announced SMCHS students Andrew Fiola, Teresa Henisey, Christopher Whelan, Erica Jain and Thomas Mina have been selected as National Merit Semifinalists. These scholastically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $33 million, that will be offered this spring. Approximately 15,000 Semifinalists will advance to the Finalist level and it is from this group that all Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. In addition to the five Semifinalists, 13 SMCHS seniors were recognized as Commended Students in the 2007 National Merit Scholarship Program: 1. Peter Currivan 2. Alexander El Nabli 3. Danika Fears 4. Caitlin Ferraro 5. Katie Fitzpatrick 6. Mark Hirschboeck 7. Holly Leonard 8. Lisa Mina 9. Danielle Potter 10. Kathleen Reed 11. Molly Scott 12. Taylar Shermer 13. Shannon Walker 2 AP Scholar Awards Announced Congratulations to the 117 students at SMCHS who earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18% of the more than 1.3 million high school students in 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar. Students took AP Exams in May 2006 after completing challenging college-level courses at SMCHS. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performances on AP exams. Christopher Whelan, Thomas Mina, Dr. Mary Beth Dougherty, Erica Jain, Teresa Henisey and Andrew Fiola. This event, hosted by Secretary Generals Sophia Richter and Lauren Velasquez was a huge success. SOCOMUN is a chance for high school students to learn about the Model United Nations Program, which simulates the real United Nations. At the conference, various bodies of the United Nations will be simulated. Delegates discussed issues such as state-sponsored terrorism, HIV/AID, and drug control. Twenty-one different high schools attended the conference: Capistrano Valley High School, Century High School, Dana Hills High School, Edison High School, Etiwanda High School, Gahr High School, Hawthorne High School, High Tech High, Huntington Beach High School, Laguna Beach High School, J Serra High School, Los Alamitos High School, Marina High School, Marymount High School, Mission Viejo High School, Ocean View High School, Rancho Buena Vista High School, St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, Tesoro High School, Tustin High School, University High School. ROYAL RUSSELL MUN Twelve students from Santa Margarita Catholic High School attended the 25th annual Royal Russell Model United Nations Conference held in East Croydon, England. The students represented the countries of Canada, Mexico, and Norway in a mock meeting of the United Nations. The students were Michael Adames, Doug Blaalid, Lindsay Forbes, Kevin Jain, Nicole Johnson, Wade Keusder, Chloe Manese, David Mittelstein, Bea Mora, Ryan Nelson, Tom Pryor, and Matt Schumacher. The students were chaperoned by Mr. Stephen Schumacher and Ms. Elyse Rhodes. Students Kevin Jain, Ryan Nelson, and David Mittelstein all won awards for their superior participation at the conference. In addition to attending the conference, the students got a chance to tour London. Students visited landmarks such as the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tate Modern Art Museum, the Cabinet War Rooms, and Westminster Abbey. W I N T E R 2 0 0 6 - A LU M N I W I N G S 3 Athletics play a significant part in student life at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Whether as a participant or spectator each student experiences a sense of pride, excitement and accomplishment. Beginning in the 2006-2007 school year, SMCHS now belongs to the newly formed Trinity League, a highly competitive group of seven schools (JSerra Catholic High School, Mater Dei High School, Orange Lutheran High School, Rosary High School, Servite High School, St. John Bosco High School.) Over 60% of the student body actively participates in our extensive 12-sport program involving 23 separate teams. Athletics - highlights from the fall semester SMCHS has had phenomenal athletic success in its young history, capturing 102 league titles, 35 CIF titles and six State Champion titles since 1991. In addition to those team successes, to date, SMCHS has produced 40 individual CIF Champions and 33 CIF Players of the Year. 4 BOYS CROSS COUNTRY The Boys Cross Country team enjoyed a very successful season that culminated with a third place finish at the California State Meet. The season started with three consecutive invitational wins. That The Santa Margarita Eagles at the was followed by trip California State Cross Country Meet. A third place finish! to New York where the team placed second at the St. Anthony’s Invitational, losing by only two points to the number eight ranked team from New York. The following weeks the team competed at the sweepstakes races at both the Orange County Championships and the Mt. SAC Invitational and placed sixth and seventh respectively. At the inaugural Trinity League Finals, the boys finished second to earn a trip to the CIF competition. The boys did not waste the opportunity to show the Southern Section that they meant business. The boys finished in second place at CIF Finals to earn a nice plaque and a trip to the State Meet, where they earned third place, narrowly missing second place by just two points; 166 – 168. The team was led by Eagle of the Year, senior Mark Hirschboeck. But one man could not earn all of the team accolades that the Eagles garnered during the year. Senior Kary Yergler and junior Jon Telles could be found at the front of all of the races while support came from seniors Ryan Martin and Alex Graniere, junior Miles Medeiros and sophomore Ian Dufficy. In every one of these areas, the Varsity Girls Golf Team saw tremendous success. Facing the most challenging schedule in the history of the program, every one of the varsity players stepped up to the challenge and worked tremendously hard in all ways possible. The team ended the season in second place in the Trinity League and in fifth place overall in the entire CIF Southern Region. The SMCHS Girls Golf team remains one of the top ranked teams in all of Orange County. Special congratulations to Tarah Taylor, Katherine Spiliotis, and Jennifer Choi who earned First Team All-League Honors, Alex Bush and Anna Thiergartner for earning Second Team All-League Honors, and Mili Dutta and Nisha Dutta for earning Third Team All-League Honors. Great job Lady Eagles! We will truly miss the outstanding senior leadership of Jennifer Choi, Lauren Hickey, and Anna Thiergartner, but we look forward to a successful and talented team of returning varsity players for next season. BOYS WATER POLO GIRLS VOLLEYBALL The Boys Water Polo season concluded with several milestones being reached. The team finished with a 16-12 winning record. Along the way, the team finished 13th in the South Coast Tournament, 17th in the Villa Park Tournament, and second in the Tustin Tournament. These placings represent our highest finishes in each respective tournament in the past eight seasons. In our non-league schedule, the boys had impressive victories over our CIF Division II foes. We also had victories over La Canada, Agoura and Redlands. Those three teams were ranked number one or two in their respective CIF divisions. Seniors Mark Connor, Eric Macey and Greg Welch each lead in categories of goals, assists and steals. Mark Connor set the single season record in assists. We look forward to building on this season and with the new pool in the near future; we are very excited about the future of aquatics at SMCHS. The SMCHS Girls Volleyball teams had a very successful 2006 season. Coach Cristy Chapman Uhrig returned as varsity coach for the second year. After the success of the 2005 season, Coach Chapman knew the teams were in for a challenge; the girls did not disappoint. The Frosh-Soph team were undefeated (28-0) Trinity League Champions. The girls won three important tournaments; Tesoro, Edison and Santa Barbara. The JV team experienced success during the season as well. The girls were named Trinity League Champions with a record of 28-2. The girls won the Tesoro and Capo tournaments. The varsity team was also named Trinity League Champions after very difficult league play. The girls finished with a phenomenal record of 34-4. The team won two tournaments: Mizuno Scholastic Cup in Chicago (senior Dicey McGraw was named MVP of the tournament) and Redondo Power Classic (Dicey McGraw was named MVP of the tournament). The team was a CIF semi-finalist in Division 1-AA and State Southern Regional Runner–up. Dicey McGraw was named MVP of the Trinity League. SMCHS Student Athletes - Making it Official Six lady Eagles from Santa Margarita Catholic High School made their futures evident today, as four of them officially signed the National Letter of Intent with their respective colleges for their NCAA sport. Wednesday, November 8th was the first day that athletes were able to sign. By signing a National Letter of Intent, a prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the designated college or university for one academic year. FOOTBALL At the time of publication, the Eagle football team had just come off a very impressive win against Mission Viejo High School. The Eagles scored and converted a two-point conversion with a minute left to beat #3 seed Mission Viejo and advance to the Pac-5 CIF Semifinal game vs. the Edision Chargers. A complete summary of the amazing season will be included in the next edition of the Alumni Wings magazine. Returning members participating were: Kaitlin von Hoffmann, Caitlin Ferraro, Erica Jain, Meghan Shain, Bill Chetney, Christina Andrews, Karissa Paddie, Kevin Jain, Jacob Kureh and Vinay Mysoor. They participated in Policy and Lincoln-Douglas style debate, National and Foreign Extemp, Dramatic and Humorous Interp and Original Advocacy. Coach Jean Hauser is very proud of the range of speaking competition categories this year’s varsity team has chosen. Next up is the National Invitational Tournament held at Cal State Fullerton in January. Both of these tournaments will help prepare the team for their run for National Forensic League Nationals this year. Members have already logged up an impressive number of points with the NFL. The Novice team has just completed their first tournament and with 32 new members, the next few years look promising. Christian Service The Christian Service Program at SMCHS seeks to develop in each student the habit of seeing the world they live in as God sees it and to become God’s hands, God’s feet and God’s heart. Since 2002, SMCHS has built 38 16x20 homes, a store house, and a library in villages in Tijuana and Tecate; equivalent to a small neighborhood. Each build requires approximately 40 people which means over 1,600 students have been involved in these trips to serve the poorest of the poor in the Baja area. SMCHS Christian Service participated in the fifth Christmas program with Corazon on December 16th, serving 95 families. SMCHS buys each family a gift and every child in the family, under the age of 18, an individual gift. This year 250 gifts will be distributed to the children and 95 gifts will be distributed to the families. SMCHS will also be able to provide food for 500 people, games and crafts for 500, 20 raffle gifts, 20 cakes (for the cake walk) and 95 Polaroid pictures of the families with Santa. Talon Theatre The SMCHS Theatre Department closed a very successful run of William Shakespeare’s, classic comedy Twelfth Night. Fun was had by all as the Talon Theatre set the show in the American North West of the 1860's. The rousing curtain call even included a square dance celebration! Talon Theatre has moved onto preparation for the Christmas Show. As part of the Performing Arts Department many of the students will be part of an opening number, Twelve Days ‘Til Christmas from the Broadway musical She Loves Me. Other members of the Advanced Theatre classes will be presenting The Nativity. Upon return from Christmas break the spring production will be announced and auditions and signups will begin. The Advanced Theatre Ensemble is currently in preparation for the Children’s Show, Just Like Us, in February. They will tour to local Elementary schools for presentations. Closing out the year in May look for the Workshop presentations by The Theatre Arts Production and Advanced Ensembles. 6 S A N TA M A RG A R I TA C AT H O L I C H I G H S C H O O L Laying the foundation. Framing the windows. Taking a break with the client family. In Loving Memory of Sister Anne Perrin SMCHS lost a special friend in August 2006. Sister Anne passed away in August after a long battle with cancer. Sister Anne was more than a teacher and staff member at SMCHS; she was a special friend to so many. On November 1, 2006 the SMCHS community celebrated Sister Anne’s life at the all-school Mass in honor of All Saints Day. There was a special memorial table at the Mass full of framed photos of loved ones from students, faculty and staff who have passed away (pictured above right). At the front and center of that table was a beautiful photograph of Sister Anne. Two of her fellow sisters from her Order were present at the Mass. Gianni De Luca '02 (pictured above with Sister Anne) spoke to the students during Mass as well. Gianni was born in France but educated in the United States. He became close friends with Sister Anne while here at SMCHS; they were both from France. He shared many stories of his friendship with Sister Anne, among them, remembering that Sister Anne always was awarded “Best Dressed” in the faculty section of the SMCHS yearbook. Sister Anne was loved by many in the SMCHS community and she is missed. Anyone would like to send a sympathy and/or Mass card to Sister Anne’s community may send them to: Notre Dame Academy, 4345 Del Mar Trails Road, San Diego, CA 92130 By Christine Veilleux: Je me souviens… (I remember…) Sister Anne was not only a colleague -- she was a friend, a wonderful friend. Her sense of humor and her cheerfulness comforted me regardless of the problems I had to face. At the time of my two surgeries, she never forgot to call me every day. In spite of the pain I underwent, Sister Anne never failed to make me smile. I miss hearing her vivacious, welcoming voice in the morning. She would always say: “Bonjour Mademoiselle Veilleux, comment allez-vous aujourd’hui?” (Good morning Miss Veilleux, how are you today?) Not having Sister Anne among us anymore brings me sadness. However, I know my dad and Sister Agnès have welcomed Sister Anne into heaven. All three no longer suffer. I have no doubt they always look over us. Sister Anne’s favorite color was purple. Everything purple was simply beautiful to her, even a single sheet of paper. So each time I see a violet, a butterfly or a bird with purple feathers, “Je me souviens…”(I remember…). * “Je me souviens” is the Québecois’ Motto. By Carol Smith: I am deeply saddened by the passing of Sr. Anne... she was our guardian angel in the Math Department. I still want to believe that she is coming back some day soon. I will forever miss her referring to her students as "her little babies" and I will forever remember her first day on the campus of Santa Margarita, watching her teach math in her French accent, which was very heavy at the time. She loved life, loved teaching, and always brought a smile to the faces of those around her. Sister Anne...until w e meet again... W I N T E R 2 0 0 6 - A LU M N I W I N G S 7 Christopher Cvengros Memorial Scholarship On Sunday, December 15, 1996, Christopher Cvengros, a junior at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, drowned in a free diving (diving without the aid of scuba tanks) accident in Laguna Beach. He was an active member of the Mariner Sea Scouts for five years and enthusiastically enjoyed boating and diving. The family and friends of Christopher Cvengros endowed a memorial scholarship in his name. It will continue to grow with contributions in years to come from donors who wish to help students at SMCHS who are experiencing financial hardships. A total of $57,857 in tuition assistance has been distributed to over 46 students since 1997. The 2006-2007 Scholarship Recipients: Pictured from left to right: Yasamin Mahallaty, Elias Perez, Lauren Perone, Laura Spurlock, Jaclyn Anderson and Maura Murphy The Richard Hunsaker Scholarship Richard Hunsaker was one of the Founding donors of SMCHS. His son, David, graduated in the class of 1992. When Richard retired from his civil engineering company, Hunsaker and Associates, in December of 2004, the company decided to honor him by giving SMCHS a $100,000 donation to create an endowment for tuition assistance in his name. W I N T E R 2 0 0 6 - A LU M N I W I N G S 9 A l u m n i Re a c h i n g O u t Santa Margarita students seem to be a special bunch of “kids” while they are attending high school but as the years have proven, as they become adults they seem to excel in ways we could never have even imagined. We have over 40 couples of “Santa Margarita Sweethearts” who have married, about 70 alumni serving in the military, almost 50 alumni who now teach and work at SM, we have professional athletes, attorneys, sportscasters, models, writers, singers, directors, stay at home moms, CEOs and the list goes on and on. Pretty impressive! Another outstanding attribute of our students is their big hearts! They reach out to others because they know how beneficial it is to be a part of an incredible and supportive family. On the next two pages are very special stories about two of our alumni, John McKeehan ’91 and Michelle Rockwood ’00. John came to speak to our students at an assembly commemorating the five year anniversary of 9/11. Michelle is currently living in Africa and serving in the Peace Corps. These are their stories: I wanted to share just a small part of my experience with you as I may be very far away from home but you are all never far away from my thoughts…Michelle Rockwood ‘00 I currently live in Kayes in Mali, West Africa working for the United States Peace Corps. It is located 90K from Senegal, on the northwestern corner of this country. It will be my home for the next two years. I am working in small business development—working to grow already existing businesses and start others. I will teach illiterate men, and I hope women, to read. I hope to take over a class a few times a week at a local school. I will be teaching a soccer team of 26 girls. We have eaten things we never knew existed. Slept in places we never dreamed possible, in conditions we never thought bearable for human life. We have stared AIDS in the faces of children. This country and its people have evoked emotions - anger, fear and joy - to a degree I never knew the human body was capable of. Last night I saw a baby, so small I could fit its entire body in the palm of my hand. My Malian “Father” has two wives, which is two less than most. I find myself in a land where topless is commonplace and a full set of teeth is an anomaly, and the next mosquito bite could be your last. This land is Mali. It is the 4th poorest country in the world. The infant mortality rate is 1 in 10, and the life expectancy is around 50 years old. I could not be farther from the halls of Santa Margarita, but when I arrived in my African village there was a letter written by my mother: “Dear Michelle,” she wrote. “If I remember correctly this was inscribed on your high-school 10 S A N TA M A RG A R I TA C AT H O L I C H I G H S C H O O L signage, which I thought was very fortuitous. Memorize it for yourself and keep it tucked away for the times that you wonder why you are in Mali…no matter what happens.” “Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” --Isaiah 40:31 The other day I brought my little Malian brother to town with me. He had not been away from his small village. I led him by the hand to the wash basin before dinner. He was terrified of all my white friends, shaking he fought to “I could not be farther from the halls of Santa Margarita” hold back his tears. I reached up and turned the faucet on. He looked at the faucet, looked at me and then back at the faucet. He turned it off, he turned it on, and he ran his hand under the water splashing himself in the process. He looked at me through his big brown tear filled eyes and his lips curved into a beautiful smile—revealing his tiny brown rotting teeth. There are not words to describe a joy this rich—the feeling, the emotion. I whispered to the group of Americans gathering to wash their hands, “wait,” and I motioned for them to go away. He was mesmerized by the magic spout that spits out water, crystal clear drinkable water. You affect people’s lives around you everyday in America. Usually, you don’t get so lucky as to have an opportunity to change a person’s fate. The stakes are a bit higher here, as death is more times than not, that fate we are trying to avoid. Many days I am scared and I want to go home. I want to send my money instead of put out my hand. I’ve convinced myself that cash, any amount, no matter how small would make a more positive impact. I am convinced that I, in a lifetime, could not begin to better the lives of these children. be here writing this. After a few seconds of shock, I again was ushered down the stairs by a gentleman that I had become close to, Rick Riscolla, our head of security. That was the last time I would ever see Rick. Only after leaving the building could I truly get a sense of what was taking place. The destruction and loss of life was undeniable and at the same time unbelievable. In the next few weeks I attended over 18 funerals for friends and colleagues. Not a day goes by that I do not realize just how lucky I was. Now residing in Ladera Ranch with my wife, Stacie, and our two children, Jack and Kaylee, I am attempting to live life and honor the memory of those we lost. Every September 11th I take the day off work to reflect on what could have been and to thank all of those who reached out to me and my family in a time of uncertainty. I contemplate my time here, I am inspired from other volunteers I have met and who have given their time and even their lives. Inspired by the rewards that comes from this land, and the people—the question of “why did you come?” has already changed to “why do you stay?” I would love to tell you more about what I am doing. Feel free to drop me an email at [email protected]. John McKeehan ‘91 This is the first time I have ever put this down on paper, and it is very difficult but I wanted to share my story. I had worked in the World Trade Center for two years as a Management Training Associate, when the planes hit the towers. I worked on the 61st floor of #2 World Trade Center, I also lived on the 51st floor, four blocks up in Tribeca. My initial reaction to the occurrence was total disbelief. I was extremely calm, yet shocked, due to the fact that the plane had hit #1 WTC, not #2 where I worked. After successfully evacuating the floor I proceeded down the stairs like the other thousands of people. After reaching the 56th floor I was asked by WTC security if I could help assist them in #1 WTC. Being trained in absolutely nothing, but wanting to assist, I obliged and we proceeded to take the elevators down to the mid-lobby on the 44th floor. All of our elevators went from the first floor to the 44th floor to a bank of other elevators. Once the elevator had taken us down from the 56th floor to the 44th floor is when the second plane had made the turn and struck our building. I had exited the elevator only one second earlier. I was thrown 10-12 feet and landed against the opposite wall. Had the elevator been delayed that one second, I would not “My parents received over 250 calls from people wanting to know if I was safe. A large chunk of those were from SMCHS alumni families. To me that truly showed the power of Santa Margarita.” One thing that I want to share is that the day of September 11, my parents received over 250 calls from people wanting to know if I was safe. A large chunk of those were from SMCHS alumni families. To me that truly showed the power of Santa Margarita. A bond was forged a long time ago that cannot be broken. I had not spoken to a majority of the people in years, but they cared enough to check in with my family. That meant and still means a tremendous amount to me and my family. Recently I was honored to speak to the current students, and I could not have been more honored to call myself an alumnus. This school has had a tremendous effect on my life and the friendships and education that I received has assisted me in every facet of my life. For this I am thankful!
