BK TODAY
Throughout the decades BK has continued an important
tradition...academic excellence.
We would like to introduce you to one of
our many prosperous students!
Senior Mackenzie Reed
Mackenzie started BK in the 7th grade after graduating from Christ the King
School. She chose BK as her school because of the attention students get from
the teachers and one-on-one environment. She attributes that to the smaller
school size. “When I shadowed at Kearney, teachers were approachable and students were welcoming. My brothers were very
successful in college due to the education they received at BK so I
knew this was a great college prep school and a perfect fit for me.”
Mackenzie is the daughter of Doug Reed and BK alum Janis
Reed (class of 1972) as well as the sister of Jeff Reed (class of
2005)and Danny Reed (class of 2006).
During her time at BK, Mackenzie participated in the fall play,
spring musical, show choir, volleyball, campus ministry, NHS
and softball, She also sings at the Saturday evening mass at
Holy Cross Church. The community service projects she has
enjoyed the most is the St Ann’s Senior to Senior Ball and the mission trip to
Bonita Springs Florida where she worked with children at a Christian camp.
Her favorite thing about BK is the teachers! She has learned a
great deal from science teacher Ellen Hansen as well as from Alicia
Hoffman with whom she has taken English, creative writing and film
as literature. She looks forward to general theater with Paula
Steffen. They create an active learning environment. “They keep
learning interesting and interactive.”
Mackenzie plans on going to Nazareth College to study the Music/
Business field next year. She is excited for the senior year end activities like
the PACE party, senior ball, graduation, and senior picnic She will miss her time
at BK but feels prepared for the future!
Tom Erb—Class of 1971
“My time at BK started in April of my 8th grade year when the new principal, Brother Tracy, called me and
mentioned that the band was in need of drummers. The drumline was going to be practicing all summer
and I would be marching football game halftime shows in September. I was deeply involved in the school
activities before I was a student.”
“I was an average student but involved in student government, track, band, stage crew and a number of
other clubs. We raised money for band trips, drums for the drumline, color guard equipment and Tom
Walsh’s trip to Ireland. One would say I almost lived at that school.”
“I realized that all the money in the world tossed at a school didn’t make a better school. It came down to the
involvement of the parents and the dedication of the faculty. I felt privileged to have gone to BK at a time like
no other time. I had so many life learning experiences at BK that were out of the classroom.”
“After BK I went to college and roomed with 3 other alumni, Frank Castronova, Tom Boehely and Dan Graham.. My first job was at R.C. Shaheen’s with friend Ray Shaheen who went to BK. A few years later I opened
a business with Joe Holland, another Kearney Grad. Everywhere I went I found people that were in this Kearney family of parents, students and faculty.”
“I married a Kearney grad Cherie Sleight, lived in Rochester until 1995 then moved to Austin Texas where I
started up a screen printing business, Viatran Inc. Viatran expanded again in Webster about 10 years ago into
a building owned by Sean Hanna, another Kearney grad.”
“Just for fun I reconnected with Ray Shahin to do musicals at BK and other area theater groups. Other Kearney alumni reconnected and
were in community bands and marching bands. My interest in volunteering at BK is to let current students enjoy high school to the same
degree that we did by working with students to build strong and close relationships with alumni that will allow them to prosper. I would love
to bring back the alumni and rekindle those glory days.”
