AUTONEWS SOUTHERN AFRICAN VETERAN & VINTAGE ASSOCIATION 1 AutoNewS Southern African Veteran & Vintage Association A RECENTLY RESTORED 1904 GLADIATOR From the Chair, I was recently invited by the Durban Early Car Club to attend a function near Port Shepstone. We all assembled at a members business premises in Shepstone where we then left for Oribi Gorge to visit a newly started agricultural museum that has been formed by some of the local members. It was very pleasant and I would urge any of our members if in the area to make an effort to visit them. There were approximately 43 cars in total that eventually arrived; The museum is situated above the local Polo fields with an array of Stationary engines and various memorabilia which I found very interesting, different from many other museums or collections. IN THIS ISSUE – AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS The members had laid on a few activities for us during the day, one could purchase Braai packs and salads, while the pub was open for those who felt like something a little stronger. The horse took off like a bolt of lightning closely followed by the Mustang while the Harley was still slipping off the start line. The main event which I found amusing was a race across the polo field between a 1969 Ford Mustang, a 1949 10/12 Harley Davidson and one of the polo horses. Here they are on the starting line ready for the siren. By the time the Mustang reached the bottom of the field to return the polo horse was almost finished. For anyone betingt on the Mustang or the Harley well… you would have lost. I would like to thank DECC for their invitation and for a very enjoyable day with fellow enthusiasts. MARCH 2013 DATING SPECIAL – October to December In September SAVVA released a notification regarding the special on dating certificates for members who would like these documents up-dated at fee of R25.00 per certificate. We had an excellent response to this project as I received almost 740 changes that have been requested / notified for our records. The majority of the support has come from the Motorcycling sector, partly due to the upcoming J-D Run in March. I would like to thank all those who took advantage of this special and passing on the information, but would also like to appeal to all waiting for dating to bear with us as it has become a major undertaking to complete. I expect to have completed all the dating by the end of February. SAVVA Rally Colours After the AGM in September “colours” for rallying was discussed and it was suggested that the committee look into the matter and report back. We have come up with a solution and hope this will be acceptable to all the serious rallyists’ that participate in the various events. SAVVA will be awarding Provincial and National Colours to participants within the next three months based on last year’s results from the various events held country wide. We have requested clubs to e-mail their lists of results to us in order to compile the list of recipients. 2 Edwardian-Veteran Run George Motor Show 2013 Johannesburg-Durban Run I believe that the JD has the largest entry field ever with 198 participants. The first bike to leave will arrive at the first tea stop before the last bike has departed. Congratulation to VVC and the JD committee for this very special event celebrating a 100 Years. *********************************** ALL OLDSMOBILE OWNERS The Buick/Cadillac Club of South Africa has recently decided to start an Oldsmobile Chapter in that Club. This decision was taken because they want to bring the three founder firms of General Motors, namely Buick, Cadillac and Oldsmobile into a single club in South Africa. The new Buick/Cadillac/ Oldsmobile Club therefore calls on all Oldsmobile owners to contact the secretary of the Buick/Cadillac/Oldsmobile Club, Mr Chris Palk, at [email protected] or Cell: 082 8083360 to become part of this vibrant new conglomerate. The Colours will comprise of the following: A special badge that can be mounted on their vehicle together with a certificate. The two categories are Motor Car events and Motorcycle events. SAVVA will co-ordinate an event whereby the respective badges/certificates will be awarded. It may require a representative to visit to the various provinces to present the awards. We will keep you informed of the progress, but currently we are waiting for clubs to provide us with the information. Future Events I would like to take this opportunity of wishing the following events all the best for 2013 and may all the participants enjoy the events, ARGENTINES VISIT SANDSTONE Peter Hall referred the Argentime family who visited South Africa in September 2012 to the Sandstone Estate and here are some photographs of their visit. MARCH 2013 TECHNICAL TIP - NO: 68 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS Some years back we mentioned the importance of carrying fire extinguishers in our vehicles. To justify our concern we received the following information from the National Fire Protection Association in the USA, last year: • • • • • 215500 vehicles were burnt out Every 146 seconds a vehicle burns out 310 people were killed in vehicle fires 1590 people were injured $1.4 Billion damage to vehicles. 3 purchased motorcycle and was unaware that the exhaust had a hole in it resulting in the exhaust blowing downwards and igniting some oil soaked cloth on the floor under the engine. In seconds there were flames lapping the fuel tank. Fortunately I was able to extinguish the flames before there was too much damage. We tend to forget we are working with dangerous machinery, inflammable fuels and other combustible materials. I’m sure most enthusiasts have discarded the old incandescent bulbs in their lead (inspection) lights and replaced them with “energy saving” tubes. They tend to last longer and don’t get so hot. If you haven’t done so - give it some thought. Fire extinguishers are now readily available from all spares outlets at very good prices – make sure you have one in your collector vehicle at all times and also make sure its in good order. It pays to buy one with a gauge so you can see the pressure level. Another warning: We recently heard of a club member in Johannesburg who sadly ended up in intensive care with severe burns when a fire got out of control whilst he was working on one of his cars. Four cars were also destroyed. It was one of those unforeseeable accidents. In this case a lead light bulb exploded igniting some petrol. He had an extinguisher on hand but the capacity was too small. Make sure you have a large capacity one in your workshop or garage. I had a similar but not as catastrophic accident in November. I was running the engine of a recently The next question is how do we sort it out? Very simple. Remove the handle, place the square shaft in a vice, heat it up and gently straighten it. It will make such a difference to the cosmetic look of the car. TECHNICAL TIP – NO: 70 POWER TOOLS A month ago we mentioned the necessity of having fire extinguishers handy when working on our vehicles. We also mentioned the dangers that surround us when working with machinery, inflammables etc. Here’s another one to add to our list – and that’s power tools. I have a fear of working with tools like circular saws and angle grinders. Years ago when apprenticeships were still deemed as necessary some of us were lucky enough to have become apprenticed in some industry or the other. In those days, regardless of what trade you entered the first lesson one was taught was respect for the tools of that particular trade and a) how to treat them correctly to ensure the tools longevity, and b) how to ensure your own longevity when working with them. TECHNICAL TIP - NO: 69 DOOR HANDLES So often one sees a beautifully prepared ca spoiled by “hanging” door handles. This is especially noticeable on cars that have a chrome strip running along the waistline and the handle should fit in with the sweep of the strip. The question is why are these handles hanging down? Simple. Over the years people have been over enthusiastic when opening doors to the point they have bent the square metal shaft that goes from the handle to the lock. About a year ago my faithful old angle grinder packed up so I purchased a new one with all the bells and whistles fitted. A friend looked at it and expressed his concern that the new one had an “on and off” switch and not a switch you had to hold down to operate it (like the old one). I took no notice of his comment until recently when I placed the “said” grinder on the work bench and plugged it in and it took off. The switch on the grinder had inadvertently been knocked on. Fortunately, it took off South and not North. It jumped off the work bench with me doing the highland fling around it. Needless to say I’ve now fitted new brushes to the old one and the new one will be available at a bargain price at the next club flea market. MARCH 2013 4 I recall some years ago, our old friend Tom Zeederberg cut his leg very badly with a portable circular saw. He never really recovered from that ordeal and could only drive automatic cars after that. We’ve just heard of another accident and that was with an angle grinder. The gentleman in question was cutting something on his garage floor when the disc jammed, jumped out of whatever he was cutting and went across his foot seriously damaging it. ******************************************* A magnificent 1924 Oldsmobile Touring Accidents like this take a fraction of a second to happen but can affect the rest of our lives. Let’s be more aware of the dangers of operating these machines. If you have electric tools fitted with this type of on/off switch make absolute sure it is in the “off” position before plugging in. INTERESTING CAR SHOW Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance In March 2013 two exceptional GM Dream Cars will be on exhibit at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. They are the 1954 LaSalle II Roadster and Sedan. Both these cars were equipped with the new aluminium V-6 engines that GM was developing at that time. At the end of 1958 these cars were destined to be destroyed by the Warhoops Salvage Yard north of Detroit. Both cars, however, survived, the Sedan largely intact and the Roadster was cut into pieces, but not destroyed. Both cars remained in the Salvage Yard for close to 30 years, where they were rescued by a collector, Joe Bortz in 1988. Bortz had these two cars, as well as a Chevrolet Biscayne Motorama Show Car and a Cadillac Eldorado Brougham Town Car (all found in the Warhoops Salvage Yard) restored to their former glory. The Midas Group came on board as the name giving sponsor and therefore the show again was known as the Midas George Old Car Show. As in the past the main focus for this year’s show was old cars that came from all over South Africa. Visitors from as far as the P.O.M.C. in Pretoria drove down to George in old cars to visit this prestigious annual get-together in George. Apart from the exhibition of many magnificent cars dating back to a 1901 Benz, a special exhibition for Two-stroke engines was also held. This non-competitive Century Run motorcycle event which began with a handful of participants at Century City in Cape Town is now being held in all the major centres in South Africa. Two years ago we enjoyed the participation of a machine 100 years old, and this year will witness a few more. At present the goals are in place to host a run with 100 machines, and it will be interesting to see which city achieves this first, although the bulk of old machines most definitely is in Johannesburg. A special certificate will be issued for the winners of this achievement. Another goal is the double century, or the combined age of rider and machine which equals 200 years! The winner of this accolade will receive the Methuselah certificate. In Cape Town, the “Century Run” is an informal gathering and the +/-100 km run will feature motorcycles and riders whose combined ages exceed 100 years (to qualify for a certificate), and is open to the public. This growing event celebrates the camaraderie and fun aspect of motorcycling of a bygone era. All marques, including sidecar and motor scooters are welcome to this event which will take place on Sunday, 24 March 2013. The event will start at a venue In Century City, situated on the northern side at the entrance next to Montague Gardens. The departure point will be next to the second traffic circle Inside Century City (from the entrance at Bosmansdam Road), where participants are encouraged to register from 08:00 hours to leave at 10:00 hours and entry is free. A mobile breakfast/coffee kiosk will be at the departure point. The routes planned for the run will be through tarred roads in the scenic Contermanskloof/Durbanville Winelands and hills beyond. There will be three routes to choose from, the shortest one being 16 km long, and created to encourage really old machines to participate without placing too much strain on machine and rider alike. The other routes are 44 km and 98 km long, and all three will culminate at the Multi Motor club in Parow, where a bring and braai is planned (fires provided as well as a cash bar). There will be riders in excess of 80 years of age. All relevant data will be furnished at the braai, as well as finisher’s certificates, with floating trophies for the rider and machine boasting the highest sum of ages, as well as the rider with the highest difference of ages, where the rider is younger than the bike. The latter encourages the younger generation to engage in vintage motorcycling. In Cape Town, the Cape Vintage Motorcycle Club has challenged the Triumph Owners Club for the highest combined total of years scored (the CVMC won the Magnum of vintage wine last year). Club membership is not a prerequisite to participate, and you can elect which club you support on the day. Please note that pillion and/or sidecar passengers will not have their ages added. If you trail your bike to the event, they can be parked adjacent to the departure point, on the understanding that they will be collected before 2 PM later in the day. Participants wishing to be presented with certificates will need to ride models manufactured on or before 31 December 1993. This means that you will need to be 80 years young to ride a 1993 machine! By the same token, a licensed 18 year old will need to ride a 1931 machine to qualify for a certificate! T-shirts sporting the logo with the words ‘I rode a motorcycle the 7th Century’ will be available at R60 each and must be ordered in advance. You must complete the event to obtain a T-shirt.
