‘DREAM CAR’ SURROUNDED BY MYSTERY by Phillip Powell
$3,240,000 for an Oldsmobile? That's probably more than the entire division was worth
when GM shut it down. And yet the highest price paid at the 2005 Barrett-Jackson
auction was the amount just quoted, and that for an Oldsmobile.
Ah, but not just any Olds. We're talking about an Oldsmobile F-88, a Motorama "Dream
Car" from 1954, one with a spectacular appearance and a storied, even mysterious,
past. One of only two cars built. Or was it three? That's part of the mystery.
And yet, as valuable as this car is now, for decades it was little more than a collection of
parts and body panels stuffed into a few wooden crates, shuffled from owner to owner
(including one man twice) before it was finally restored.
A little background for those of you unfamiliar with the Motorama shows. These were
annual GM extravaganzas, which traditionally opened at New York's Waldorf-Astoria
hotel, then were sent on cross-country tours, the vehicles and display materials shipped
in customized tractor-trailer units almost as spectacular as the cars themselves…

President’s Message
Spring has sprung and summer is beginning to take over, but even so the
weather is perfect for a Saturday night outing. This month’s meeting on
the 28th should be a nice night for sitting by our cars and shooting the
breeze. Come on out and join us at the Rock ‘N Roll McDonald’s.
I would like to encourage you once again to attend the Pacific Southwest
Zone Show that is taking place on May 13 & 14th. This is a great show with
Nationals style judging. For more information on this event see last
month’s newsletter.
We are going racing on June 4th. No, not with your Oldsmobile, but Kart
Racing at the F1 Race Factory. The information on this event is on the
flyer. It is very important that you RSVP so that we can let F1 know how
many Karts we will need. Please RSVP to Activities Director, Frank Alfter.
The Dinner & a Show event has been a big success the last couple of
years, so we will be doing it again this year on Saturday, July 9th. All the
information you need to know appears in this newsletter. Please RSVP to
Vice President, Stu Schindler.
If you are planning on going to the Oldsmobile Nationals in Washington
State this year and are interested in driving up with other club members,
please let me know so that we can organize a caravan.
The progressive dinner is scheduled for September 17, 2005. We need
volunteers to host the event. Just in case you have never attended a
progressive dinner, I will explain what it is. Dinner is eaten in stages at 2
or 3 different homes. We have salads and appetizers at the first home, the
main course at the 2nd home (or at the 1st home in addition to the
appetizers), and dessert at the 3rd home. At the dessert home we play
games and give away prizes. Give me a call or send me an email if you
would like more information about hosting this event.

Highlighting those shows were the so-called dream cars
(which we call "concepts" today) developed in GM's styling
studios. They served the dual role of design studies for the
corporation and excitement builders for would-be buyers,
while further cementing GM's then-image as the world center
of automotive styling.
The 1954 Oldsmobile F-88 was such a Dream Car. Erotic,
almost, in its harmony of curves, the F-88 was a 2-seater
sports car built on the same chassis as the first Chevrolet
Corvette and with the same wheelbase. Power was supplied
by a modified 324 cubic-inch Olds Super 88 V-8 engine giving
250 hp, flowing through a 4-speed Hydra-Matic transmission.
Everything else, aside from the instruments, was unique. It
was painted metallic gold, with metallic green fender wells
and off-white leather upholstery. To say the F-88 was flat-out
gorgeous would be an understatement.
In those days, after Dream Cars completed their duties with
Motorama, the vehicles would be given to division heads, who
were free to dispose of them as they wished although GM
management preferred the cars be scrapped. If that seems a
sin, the fear was that such a car in the wrong hands could
lead to serious legal problems. Although driveable, the cars
weren't engineered for everyday road use and had a private
owner been involved in an accident, the corporation most
likely would have been sued.
Nevertheless some cars were given to supposedly worthy friends and not all, fortunately, went to the crusher.
After the F-88 completed its Motorama duties and was sent back to Olds headquarters in Lansing, GM's legendary
styling head Harley Earl apparently decided that destroying it would, in fact, be sinful, and ordered another one built for
his own use. This car was identical except for its bright red paint scheme. And that's when the stories began. It was
long rumored that one of the cars had caught fire, with varying accounts of where and how. All the GM survivors from
that period insist there never was such a fire.
Somehow the gold F-88 disappeared, while the red car was
redeveloped in 1957 as a Mark II, with the same engine and
chassis. A later Mark IV was built, using yet another fiberglass
body. This car became Harley Earl's when he retired to Florida
in 1958. After his death it was given to a NASCAR museum but
when museum construction was delayed, the car was returned
to Michigan where Earl's successor, Bill Mitchell, ordered it
destroyed.
Meanwhile a disassembled F-88 arrived in crates at the
California home of Errett Lobban Cord (yes, the man behind
the famed front-wheel-drive cars carrying his name). Earl and
Cord were friends, but no one knows exactly why E.L. ended
up with this stack of panels and parts. However the car

remained crated and eventually was sold, and sold, and sold again. In all, it had twelve owners, including the division
and one man who bought it twice.
Was this the gold F-88? Its external panels were unpainted yet
the fender undersides were finished in metallic green. Could it
have been Earl's red 1954 car? Or maybe neither? There have,
after all, been unconfirmed tales about a third 54 F-88.
The most likely case, experts claim, is that Earl somehow
regained possession of the golden F-88 and since he already had
a red one, shipped the original back to Michigan, to be delivered
to his friend E.L. Cord. No one can explain why it was
disassembled and crated.
Fortunately for all, during a lengthy process of multiple owners
the F-88 was finally restored to its golden glory and after being
in the safe hands of Seattle collector Gordon Apker for several
years, returned to the spotlight at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, where it sold in January for that astounding
$3,240,000. A small fortune, perhaps, but for those who appreciate automotive sculpture, history, and rarity, this

JOHN DELOREAN, SPORTS CAR DEVELOPER, DIES AT 80
John Z. DeLorean, the innovative automaker who left a promising career in Detroit to
develop the stainless steel-skinned, gull-winged sports car bearing his name and was
acquitted of charges he planned to sell $24 million worth of cocaine to support the
venture, has died at the age of 80.
DeLorean died March 20th at Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J., of complications
from a recent stroke, said Paul Connell, an owner of A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral
Directors in Royal Oak, Mich., which was handling arrangements.
DeLorean, whose namesake car was turned into a time machine in the “Back to the
Future” movies, was among just a handful of U.S. entrepreneurs who dared start a
car company in the last 75 years. DeLorean broke the mold of staid Midwestern auto
executives by pushing General Motors Corp. to offer smaller models, auto historians
said.
While at GM, he created what some consider the first “muscle car” in 1964 by
cramming a V-8 engine into a Pontiac Tempest and calling it the GTO. Although he
was a rising if unconventional executive at GM, and was believed by many to be
destined for its presidency, he quit in 1973 to launch the DeLorean Motor Car Co. in
Northern Ireland.
Eight years later, the DeLorean DMC-12 hit the streets with its unpainted stainless
steel skin and gull-wing doors. Its angular design earned it a cult following, and the
car was a time-traveling vehicle for Michael J. Fox in the “Back to the Future” films of the late 1980s. However, the factory produced
only about 8,900 cars in three years, estimated John Truscott, membership director of the DeLorean Owners Association.
DeLorean’s company collapsed in 1983, a year after he was arrested in Los Angeles, accused in a sting of conspiring to sell $24
million of cocaine to salvage the company. DeLorean used an entrapment defense to win acquittal on the drug charges in 1984,
despite a videotape in which he called a suitcase full of cocaine “good as gold.”
He was later cleared of defrauding his investors, but continuing legal entanglements kept him on the sidelines of the automotive
world, although his passion for cars did not abate. After declaring bankruptcy in 1999, he said he wanted to produce a speedy plastic
sports car selling for only $20,000.
A public viewing was tentatively set for Wednesday at the funeral home, located north of Detroit, with a private burial scheduled for
Thursday at White Chapel Cemetery in the Detroit suburb of Troy.

NEXT MEETING, SATURDAY, MAY 28, 2005
The next meeting of the Oldsmobile Club of Arizona will be held on Saturday, May 28th at 4:00 p.m. The meeting place
is the Sweet Tomatoes Restaurant located in the Scottsdale Pavilions Shopping Center, Loop 101 and Indian Bend Rd in
Scottsdale. In conjunction with our meeting, there is a car show at the Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's. We have a row
reserved in the McDonald's parking lot exclusively for our club members. This is great time to have a meal and talk with
Olds friends. Come out and join the fun!
HEALTH NEWS
On Friday, April 29th Bob Lefrancois had a double bypass performed. All went well and he is doing fine. We wish him a
full, speedy recovery, and hope he is feeling well soon.
On Monday, May 9th Cy Mamola was hit at high speed broadside while driving into work in Tempe. He is still at Maricopa
County hospital in intensive care and has undergone two surgeries already. Your prayers and thoughts are appreciated
for his family and his timely recovery. For updates on his condition, call Karl Sup 602-628-8866.

ANNUAL CLASSICS CAR SHOW AT PRESCOTT VALLEY
On Saturday, June 18th, the Yavapai Classic Cruisers of Arizona present The Annual Classics At Prescott Valley Car Show
And Swap Meet. The car show hours are from 10-3. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. There will be trophies,
50/50 drawing, and raffle prizes. If you are planning on attending and would like to drive up as a group, we will meet

DINNER AND A SHOW AT THE CASINO
On Saturday, July 9th we will meet inside Casino Arizona at the Eagle's Nest restaurant at 7:00 p.m. The casino is
located at 101 & McKellips in Scottsdale. They have a very extensive buffet that includes salads, main courses,
desserts, and drinks. After dinner we will be attending Showstoppers Live that is also in the casino. The show starts at
9:00 p.m. It is a musical tribute to some of America's greatest super stars. Cost per person is a mere $10. Please see

Those interested in driving up together to Prescott to the Watson Lake car show on Saturday, August 6th, will be
meeting at 6:45 a.m. in the Denny's parking lot on the Southwest corner of I-17 & Bell Rd. After the show, Jim & Trudi
Schultz will host a pizza party in their 6,000 sf garage. You will be able to see his large car collection, with most of

EMISSIONS TEST EXEMPTION SIGNED BY GOVERNOR
HB2357 Emissions Test Exemption for Collectible Vehicles was signed into law by the Governor, but now needs approval
by EPA. This could take 12 to 18 months. If approved, vehicles carrying collector car insurance would not need to have
an emissions test if they are 15 years old & older!!

President G.Varley brought the meeting to order at 3:05 pm. Present were 5 board members.
Minutes of the March 26, 2005 Board meeting were approved as distributed.
Treasurer C.Alfter sent in her report, which was reviewed with a balance of $4,967.09.
Ten-members/one guest participated in the cruise to Casa Grande Ruins. Total expense was $30.00
For the May , 2005 Drive-In Event the Club will provide sub-sandwiches, chips, candy and variety of sodas
After further discussion on possible changes to the method of voting at future car show events, it was voted to refer the question to a
committee consisting of J.Schultz, J.Varley, M.Beaulac and S.Schindler.
F.Alfter is continuing to work out the details for a Club Indy Cart Racing event on June 4, 2005. The Club will consider supplementing the
expenses.
A Casino Night for Saturday, July 2, 2005 is being put together, keeping in mind a cost of $10.00 per person and the Club supplementing any
overage.
Those members attending the Prescott Antique Auto Club annual exhibit at Watson Lake Park on August 6, 2005 will be invited to J.Schultz’
home afterwards for pizza/soda provided by the Club.
Plans for a Progressive Dinner on September 17, 2005 were put in place. Need a theme and volunteers to host the event.

In the absence of the Treasurer, S.Schindler read her report, stating a balance of $4,967.0 9. Report will be filed for audit.
Copies of the Roster are available to those members that cannot retrieve it from email.
Members were informed of the new Emissions Bill that passed grandfathering cars 15yrs and older provided you have proof of proper Collector
Car Insurance.
Ten members and one guest enjoyed the cruise to the Casa Grande Ruins. Club paid the admission fee of $30.00.
J.Varley gave a report on the BOP Show.
Need volunteers to host the Progressive Dinner scheduled for September 17, 2005
The caravan to the Beeline Cruise-In on April 30, 2005 in Payson will meet in the Target parking lot in Fountain Hills at 7:30 a.m.
Members were reminded to RSVP to G.Varley if you are planning on joining the Club on May 7, 2005 for American Graffiti night at the drivein. The Club will be covering admission and providing sub-sandwiches, chips, candy and drinks.
Members were asked to attend the Pacific Zone Show in California on May 14, 2005, if at all possible.
Hurst Olds Day at the Pavilions will be May 21, 2005. Refer to the Club newsletter for details.
Members going to Nationals in Seattle, WA were asked to communicate to plan a route.

PARTING SHOTS
This one’s made its rounds on the internet in the
past, but a picture is surely worth a thousand words.
The stupidity of some people in this world never fails
to amaze me. The photo above was taken in
Waldorf, Maryland by a Transportation Supervisor
for a company that delivers building materials for 84
Lumber. When he saw the overloaded red Jetta
there in the parking lot of IHOP, he went and
bought a disposable camera to take pictures. Note
the exhaust smoke, indicating that the car is
running. The materials were loaded at a nearby
Home Depot where the store manager made the
customer sign a waiver before loading the vehicle.
On the roof are many 2X4s, 4X4s and OSL sheets of lumber. Note than in addition to the lumber on the roof, the back
seat contained ten 80-pound bags of concrete! Home Depot estimated the load weight at 3000 lbs. The car is a VW
Jetta with Florida plates. Although both back tires were flattened and the back shocks were driven up through the
floorboard, the guy took off on US Route 301 saying he was headed for Annapolis, more than 40 miles away!
Just remember this:
If all the cars in the United States were placed end-to-end… it would probably be Memorial Day Weekend!!
