2004 OLDSMOBILE SHOW A SUCCESS

What a great success the All Oldsmobile Show was this year! Who would have
guessed that Phoenix would have been inundated with such torrential rains that
the show was nearly a wash out! The California contingency nearly cancelled
their trip here, but managed at the last minute to arrange enclosed carriers for
their cars. Miraculously on late Friday the rains ceased, and Saturday awoke to
a sunny blue sky with magnificent drifting clouds.
The show volunteers began gathering at 7:30 to set up tents and divide the
parking lot into show classes at the Rock N’ Roll McDonald’s in the Scottsdale
Pavilions. This McDonald’s is the site of the largest, longest running weekly car
show in the United States; every Saturday throughout the year.
There were 70 cars pre-registered with 16 more registering the day of the
show, for a total of 86 Oldsmobiles. Officially one more entrant than last year,
even though two more cars arrived much later after the judging deadline
passed. By 10am, the dark, unassuming pavement was covered with some of
the finest work ever birthed by Lansing. But the fourth row contained an
exceptional treat…

President’s Message
I was at the weekly Saturday night car show at the Scottsdale Pavilions
today. Lots of cars were out and the weather was just beautiful. It looks
like the cold weather is over for the year, and you know what that means!
EVEN more fun with our cars! This coming Saturday, March 13th is our
annual spring picnic. Per usual I’m sure there will be lots of good food to
eat. Pat Sedillo is cooking the brisket again. Any of you that came to the
picnic the last couple of years know what an amazing cook he is. Lana
Korff is making her infamous cowboy beans, and also her Olds club famous
brownies. I don’t think anyone will go hungry. Consult the flyer to find out
whether you are to bring a side dish or dessert item.
On April 17th we will be driving up to Payson, Arizona to spend the night.
We will stay at Kohl’s Ranch. We will eat lunch at Tonto Natural Bridge
State Park. While we are there we will play a few games. That evening
after dinner we will gather in the hospitality suite for a rousing game of
Scream N’ Holler. Those of you that have played this before know how
much fun it is. Sunday after breakfast we will go see club members Fred &
Collette Mandrick’s newly renovated soda fountain in Payson. They are
hoping to have the joint open for business by the end of April. We will
have a wonderful drive home and stop somewhere for lunch on the way
back. If you have been on any of the other overnight trips our club has
had, you know how much fun we have. Make your reservations with our
Social Director Patty Sarraillon before March 27th. The rooms are on a first
come first serve basis. Look for more information about this event in this
newsletter.
The American Graffiti night at the Drive-in has been changed to May 8th.
This should be lots of fun, with many Oldsmobiles present, some of them
convertibles. May 14 and 15 is the Pacific Southwest Zone Show. This is a
great show. It is taking place close to the beach in California. We will
arrange a caravan to drive over together. If you are interested in going,
please fill out the registration form.
In your April issue of Journey With Olds there will be a ballot for you to
vote for the new board of directors for the Oldsmobile Club of America.
I’m running for Pacific Southwest Zone Director and would really appreciate
your support. I promise not to let you down.

I can remember coming out West laying on the platform under the back window of a gray Packard. After we got settled
in Albuquerque, my dad bought a two-tone blue ‘54 Cadillac, and by the time I was in junior high we had a light blue
‘55 Cadillac. Then my parents stepped up a notch and bought a lavender ‘64 Oldsmobile Starfire. Man could that thing
break the tires loose! I don't know what kind of engine it had because all I cared about was flooring it at the time. We
drove it until it wouldn't run anymore.
Next they bought a gold Oldsmobile F-85 with a black vinyl top. That was much more acceptable to go on a date in.
When it came time for me to get a car I wanted a ‘55 Ford, but my older brother saved me and helped me get a ‘58
Chevy Impala. White with lots of chrome, she was immaculate, and it netted me a cheerleader. It had a 283 bored to
301 with a Powerglide transmission. I loved that car and I think that is where my love for cars started. The day before I
left for Viet Nam, a lady left her car in the sloped parking lot out of gear with the emergency break off. It rolled downhill
out of the lot and straight into the side of my car, totaling it. I left the poor Impala in the garage at my sister’s house.
When I got back, a friend gave me a ‘38 Chevy coupe. My brother’s friend pulled the 283 from my ’58, and stuck it into
the 1938. I drove the ’38 Chevy out to Arizona, and sold it for 250 dollars. It is probably still around here. I think I saw
it once recently, in much better condition than when I had it.
While I was in Viet Nam, my grandparents went to the Chevy-Olds-Cadillac dealership and looked at the 1968
Oldsmobile selection. My grandmother picked out a Cutlass with a 350 Rocket and a four-barrel carburetor. I never liked
the car because it was Green-Gold, and had a poor paint job. After my grandparents died my dad used it as a second
car. My nephews told me later they would borrow it and "lay the rubber". When I visited my parents out here in dry
Arizona, they said they were going to sell the car to a lady at church with two kids, who were two and four years old. All
I could think about was seeing them pull the knobs off everything and trashing it. The car was too nice for that demise.
My dad had it painted at Maaco. He called it cream beige, but I called it light yellow. The interior was white pearl and
black, in immaculate condition. I decided it would be the replacement for my ‘58 Impala. I asked for the car and it was
given to me. It still has the same paint job, and there is a little rust here and there, but I love that car. I have been
putting it back together little by little. I now have owned it for about 15 years, and it’s spent most of its time sitting in
the garage, leaking oil, until I recently decided it was time to put it back into roadworthy condition.
Yesterday I was with my teenage son when the strong urge came upon me to see if it would burn rubber. A friend that
worked at Glendale aviation had given me some Avgas to put in it, so I thought I would give it a try. Putting my foot on
the brakes, I brought the RPM up and let her go. Whee!!! ...smoke everywhere to the excited exclamations of my
teenage son. Do we ever grow up? I really hope not. How can we pass on the love of cars to the next generation?

In row 4, were not one, not two, but three 1969 Hurst/Olds’. This trio of unassuming terror dominated the surrounding
scenery, including a 1968 Hurst/Olds parked next to them. But their inert draw could not hold back the crowd’s
enthusiasm for an immaculate Trophy Blue 1969 Cutlass S W-31 jewel in the corner.
The entrants paced through the rows of cars, double-checking numbers and marking down their favorite car in each
class. Of particular note, Class 200 and 300 were very well attended with some beautiful 1949-1960 cars, while
numerous 1961-1972 Cutlass and F85’s crowded the 500 and 600 Classes. Every row was chocked full of such beautiful
works of art, the choices were hard!
Quite a few of the participant judges hovered in the Station Wagon class, drooling over a beautiful 1957 Fiesta 88
wagon. The Modified class was very difficult to judge, as it came right down to personal taste for sleeping beauties
versus elegant brawn. In the end, all ballots were collected and tabulated.

During tabulation, a club meeting was held at the event tent with the name badge drawing finally being won by Rita
Gwizdalski, and the substantial 50/50 drawing was netted by none other than Joe Varley. Throughout the entire event,
raffle prizes graciously donated by the show sponsors were drawn and awarded while nearby the Oldsmobile Club of
Arizona merchandise and hats evaporated like the rain in the desert. The merchandise table volunteers were swamped
the entire show with orders, and our illustrious president was busy signing up many new members!
With the votes now in, trophies were presented to 1st, 2 nd and 3 rd place entries for each class (if the class contained that
many entries). The results of these awards appear below. A long distance trophy was given for an entry from Ohio, with
cars in attendance from California, Nevada, and Kansas as well. We even had a visitor from Long Island in attendance!
Of special note were the Participant’s Choice award, which went to Reg Vallelunga of Mesa, AZ for his 1957 Fiesta 88
Station Wagon, and the Best of Show trophy, which was awarded to Matt Krawczyski of Niles, IL for his 1969 Cutlass S
W-31.
The show concluded and the crowd looked forward to an extraordinary Rock N’ Roll McDonald’s Saturday night show,
dominated by Oldsmobiles. However, soon after the show ended, the clouds grew thicker and more menacing although
no rain fell. But it was a definite deterrent to the latter shows’ attendance. At least the weather was beautiful for the
duration of the show… maybe Mother Nature is an Oldsmobile fan after all!

NEXT MEETING, SATURDAY, MARCH 27, 2004
The next meeting of the Oldsmobile Club of Arizona will be held on Saturday March 27th at 4:00 p.m. The meeting
place is the Sweet Tomatoes Restaurant located in the Scottsdale Pavilions Shopping Center, Loop 101 and Indian Bend
Rd in Scottsdale. In conjunction with our meeting, there is a car show at the Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's. We have a row
reserved in the McDonald's parking lot exclusively for our club members. This is great time to have a meal and talk with
Olds friends. Come out and join the fun!
SPRING PICNIC AT PICACHO PEAK PARK
The club's annual spring picnic will be held on Saturday, March 13th, at Picacho Peak State Park, from 11:00 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. We have the Cholla ramada rented. A caravan has been organized. Please meet in the parking lot west of
Bank of America on the SW side of I-10 & Elliott at 9:30 a.m.
Picacho Peak Park is at exit number 219, between Phoenix & Tucson. This is a great opportunity to take your car out for
some exercise. The club will be providing the main course, a brisket that will make good sandwiches or can be eaten by
itself. The club will also be providing the drinks, cups, plates, forks, and napkins. The picnic will be potluck. We are
asking members whose last name begins with A-Q to bring a side dish, and R-Z to bring a dessert item. You can bring
one of each if they would like. Please also bring a serving utensil for your dish. The club will pay the park admission
fee. You need to sign in at the park office and get a parking pass before you can enter the park. Tell the park ranger
that you are with the Oldsmobile Club. There are "real" bathrooms directly across from our camp site. Remember to
bring your walkie-talkies with you so our caravan will run smoothly.
DO YOU LIKE TO PLAY POKER?
We will have a poker run in conjunction with the spring picnic. The number of replacement cards you can buy to
improve your hand is limited to 5. You will draw some of your cards when we meet in the morning for the caravan and
the remainder park (Tucson members will draw all of their cards at the park). The person with the best hand will win a
prize. So come on out to the picnic and join in the fun. Remember to bring a dish and your best poker face.
OVERNIGHT TRIP TO PAYSON IN APRIL
We have planned an overnight trip to Payson Arizona on Saturday, April 17th. This will be an exciting adventure. We
will be leaving Fountain Hills Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. to drive up to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park and have
lunch. After lots of food & fun we will head out to Kohl's Ranch where we will be having dinner, playing games, and
spending the night. Sunday morning after breakfast we will be touring Fred & Collette Mandrick's newly acquired and
renovated soda shop in Payson. We will then make our way via the back roads (route to be determined) back in to
town. We will be stopping for lunch at a casino before going home. See the flyer in this newsletter for more details.
TECH SESSION APRIL 24TH
Would you like to learn how to do a tune-up on your car? Jim Schultz a master tuner, will be showing those present
how it is done. He will be borrowing garage space at the Varley's Scottsdale home for the tech session. The session
will start 1:00 p.m. Beverages will be served. This is the same day as our monthly meeting. If your car needs a tuneup, contact Jim Schultz to make arrangements for him to use your car in the demonstration. Only one car will be used.

AMERICAN GRAFFITI NIGHT AT THE DRIVE-IN
Did watching the movie American Graffiti bring back memories, or make you wish you were a kid back in the '50s? Did
you enjoy the TV show Happy Days? Would you like to relieve some of those moments? If so, join us at the Scottsdale
Six Drive-In Theatre on Saturday, May 8th. Bring your old car out and let's relive some of that old fashioned fun! The
club will be providing dinner & drinks. The food that will be served is yet to be determined, as well as the time we will
be meeting and the movie that will be playing. Watch for more details next month.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST ZONE SHOW MAY 14 & 15
The Pacific Southwest Zone Show is taking place on May 14th & 15th at the Cliff's Resort in Pismo Beach, California.
There will be a welcome party Friday evening with the car show taking place on Saturday. This will be a national points
style car show. If you've never been to a national meet this show will be a great starting point for you. There are
typically over 200 cars in attendance. There is an awards banquet on Saturday evening. If you would like to go,
contact Gloria Varley to arrange to drive over as a group. See the show flyer & registration form in this newsletter for
more information.
TWILIGHT DINNER CRUISE - MARK TWAIN STYLE
Lets head out to Canyon Lake for a little desert yachting. We have reserved a place on The Dolly Steamboat for a
"Twilight Dinner Cruise" on one of the most picturesque lakes in Arizona. The drive out is marvelous, passing by
dramatic views of the pristine Sonoran Desert and the Superstition Mountains. Bring your camera and binoculars for the
drive and cruise. As we approach the lake we will take a moment to pull over at the Canyon Lake Vista Lookout for a
spectacular 180 degree view. Constructed at the lake to mimic a Mark Twain era steamboat, the Dolly is a double
decked sternwheeler that carries up to 130 passengers and departs daily, offering close views of the multihued canyon
walls and lakefront wild life. You're sure to see ducks and shore birds and if you're lucky, Bighorn sheep that reside in
the back canyons.
The Dolly winds its way through a series of connected canyons revealing extraordinary scenery. As the boat slices
through the smooth water the Captain plays relaxing music and points out items of interest. Dinner will be a satisfying
buffet style serving of rib-eye steaks & chicken breasts with all the trimmings. By the time you've had dessert the sun
will be setting, and the boat has turned around and heads back for the starlight/moonlight cruise home. The event
takes place on Saturday, June 5th. The 2-1/2 hour cruise and dinner will cost each member $45.00 (the club is picking
up the tab for the tax & tip). Due to the popularity of this cruise and the need for the caterers to buy & prepare the
food, members will need to pay in advance. Reserve June 5th on your calendars now. SEE THE FLYER IN THIS

NATIONAL MEET IN AUGUST
The Oldsmobile Nationals are taking place in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 25-28, 2004. It sounds like this will be
a great event in a great location. If we get a group of people from our club going we will organize a caravan to drive

HATS, HATS, EVERYWHERE I LOOK THERE ARE HATS!
The club unveiled a few new styles of embroidered hats at the car show. They were a big hit. We still have some with
the world emblem on the front, and with a rocket on the front. All the hats with the club logo on the front & a rocket
on the back sold out in one day! The remaining hats will be available for purchase at the spring picnic and at the next
meeting. If you would like to special order a hat you can do so by pre-paying. The cost is $12 per hat. Ask Gloria for
the details.
We are taking special orders for the club jackets. They are $55 for sizes S-XL, and $62 for 2XL-3XL. A check must
accompany your order. The merchandise orders will be going in soon, so don't delay!
ANTI-CRUISING BILL IS BACK FOR LEGISLATIVE CONSIDERATION
The anti-cruising bill is back. We need to start letting the legislators know we do not want HB2136 to pass. The
Arizona Motor News has a copy of the bill on their legislative page and there are links for the House member roster. Fill

Gloria brought the meeting to order via email. Present were: Gloria & Joe Varley, Jim Schultz, Karl & Laura Sup,
Scott Podhradsky, Rita Gwizdalski, and Patty Sarraillon.
Discussed changing the date of the drive-in event from May 15th to May 8th. The Pacific Southwest Zone show is
taking place on May 14th & 15th. The Route 66 Fun Run is the first weekend in May every year.
We will have a 1st, 2nd, 3rd place prizes for the picnic poker run, and possibly another game too. We will have
prizes for the poker run, trivia contest, and maybe other games on the Payson trip.
We will pay Lana Korff for the ingredients for her cowboy beans that she is making for the picnic. She is making
brownies for her potluck item.
Pat Sedillo will cook the main course. Gloria will buy buns and bring the drinks, tea & crystal light lemonade. She
will also bring some ice in a cooler and the paper products.
Gloria will fill out the OCA meet application and submit it in March.
Patty put down a deposit of $480 for the riverboat dinner cruise in June. We changed the number of tentative
reservations to 26 people. The club will pick up the tab for the tax & tip, so the members will only pay $45 per
person. Actual costs are $53.45 per person.
Patty has received several reservations for the Payson overnight trip. More expected soon. The hotel won't charge
the club card until the day we check out.
The Yavapai Classic Cruisers have asked if we could promote their car show on Sat. June 19th. We will put a
registration form in our newsletter for their event.
New member Marc Beaulac purchased two domain names for our club as a gift. The two websites are
oldsclubofaz.com & azoldsclub.com. The board decided to use the shorter name as our primary web page. We will
decide on a hosting plan soon.

The Pacific Southwest Zone Show will take place on May 14th & 15th. Their show flyer will appear in our next
newsletter. Please try to attend their show. We will arrange a caravan to California.
Our American Graffiti night at the drive-in date will be changed.
Talked about the riverboat dinner cruise on June 5th.
Discussed parking arrangements for after our show is over today.
Please everyone help clean up the lot, and load tables, etc.
Name badge drawing was worth $80. Rita Gwizdalski's name was drawn, and she was present wearing her name
badge. Congratulations Rita!

Canyon Lake is located 14 miles NE of Apache Junction along the historic Apache Trail (Highway 88). This is a
wonderful scenic drive with switchbacks and a one way bridge!
We will arrive at the Canyon Lake marina around
5:30pm and board the Dolly Steamboat at 6:00 PM.
Boarding is on a first come first basis, and we would
like to board as a group. We will be sitting on the top
deck with a full view of the beautiful canyon walls and
wildlife (bring your camera, sunscreen & parasol).
It is important that you make your reservations early
because June is a very busy month and the cruises are
always full (130 guests). Make your reservation with

Let the fun filled weekend begin in Fountain Hills at 9:00 a.m. where we will be meeting in the
Target parking lot on the south side of Shea Blvd. We will depart at 9:30 a.m. sharp, after a brief
driver’s meeting. You will receive your information packet for the weekend during the meeting. If
you have walkie -talkie radios, please bring them or you’ll miss out on the trip’s chatter, singing, and
trivia discussions. Also this is a great way to keep the group together. The club will be providing
water, soft drinks, and snacks for the weekend along with a goodie bag filled with surprises.
The club will purchase lunch at the KFC in Payson and then head out to Tonto Natural Bridge. Good
news! The road leading in to the park and the parking lot are now paved. We will eat lunch, hike
and play a few games. Be prepared to show off your talents. We will then cruise on to Kohl’s
Ranch.
After everyone has checked into their rooms and rested a bit, we’ll meet for dinner in the main
lobby at 6:30 p.m. We’re not done yet. We have plans for some Scream & Holler following dinner
(bring your quarters). Sunday morning we will meet for breakfast at 9:00 a.m. After breakfast we
will be making a stop at the Mandrick’s Soda Fountain in Payson. We will then head back to the
valley. Those that are interested will stop for lunch, possibly at a casino.
This trip will cost $160.00 per couple and $125.00 for a single. This includes lodging, lunch &
dinner on Saturday, breakfast on Sunday, and admission into Tonto Bridge. Tax and tip are
included. Everyone will be on their own for Sunday’s lunch. We have eighteen rooms reserved at
Kohl’s Ranch. Reservations will be a first come basis. Your reservations will be placed through
Patty Sarraillon. Your money is due no later than March 27th . Make your check payable to the
Oldsmobile Club of Arizona and mail it to Patty Sarraillon, 6017 E. Osborn Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018.
