Hello, my name is Rick Spacek, and it is my
privilege to introduce myself and wife Donna to
the community. I feel extremely blessed to
have been called by Ava First Southern Baptist
Church to be their pastor. We are excited to
have an opportunity to serve with such a talented and loving congregation as we work together ministering in our community desiring
to increase the kingdom of God.
I recently retired as a public school administrator, where I enjoyed a wonderful career in education. For the past 20 years I have served as
bi-vocational pastor for several Southern Baptist Churches in Southern Missouri. Donna and
I have three grown children and nine grandchildren. We are excited to relocate to the Ava
area and get to know the good folks in Douglas
County.

Owners, Bestow Property to City of
Ava and Historical Society
Max and Wanda Murphy, long-time residents of Ava
and owners of United Country Area Land Realty,
recently deeded and gifted property located adjacent
to the Douglas County Museum, to the City of Ava
and Douglas County Historical Society. The land
and house, located at the corner of S. 5th Street and
E. Washington Avenue, appears in courthouse
records as early as the 1880s.
It was also written about in an historical article in the Douglas County Historical Society’s JOURNAL,
2013 Winter Edition. The article noted that the house was owned by Joseph Dennis Hartley and wife
Myrtle (Baumgartner) in the early 1900s. At the time of the 1910 Census of Douglas County, it was
recorded that the couple had been married 4 years, and Joseph owned a barbershop on the Ava Square.
In the 1920 Census, Hartley was still in the barbering business and living in this same home, next to
the present day museum. The 1930 Census documented an occupation change for Joseph Hartley from
barber to Douglas County Circuit Clerk, where he served a 1-year term. The couple’s home was then
valued at $1,500 and at that time had 2 sons living in the home, Lowell and Virgil, and one daughter,
J. Lois. It was noted that Joseph died in 1956 and his wife, Myrtle, in 1974.
Max and Wanda Murphy, pictured above with Mayor David Norman, City Aldermen Stan Lovan,
Burrely Loftin, and Leon Harris, present the deed to museum board members and staff.
Excerpts taken from a Douglas County Herald article published on November 18, 2015.
