THE BOSUN’S WHISTLE NEWSLETTER ( Issue 11 ) August 2013 I must say thank you to Pauline & Jez the landlords of the Queen Charlotte for letting us have our Residents Meeting at the pub. It was the first meeting of 2013 and we had 40 Residents that attended the meeting on 9th July. Also thanks to all those people that donated raffle prizes on the night, which we raised £53 on the night. Once again a big thanks to our Community Residents. Also thanks to the Guest Speakers that came along to talk to us about what has been happening and what is going to happen in our community in this year. These are some of the things that have been done in 2013 in our Community. Well as you know we have had our Estate Map Sign put in, that was on Friday 31st May by Aster Property Services Team of Shaun & Tony. But I’m very disappointed that it has been Damaged already with the corner bent and with Graffiti over the weekend of 13th & 14th July I reported it to the Police on the Monday, and on Tuesday Clive & Joe from Hampshire Community Safety Service was there cleaning it off. So thanks to both teams for doing a good job. I’m please to say that the work that Highway’s Amey team of Tony & Micky & Noony have now finished the road works at Mountbatten & Somerville Courts, that was on 25th June, where the trees were cut down and it’s now looking good. I did ask if they could take the kerb stone away and make it all parking, but it was already planned that was what they where going to do on site. Page 2 Inside Story Headlines Aster Property Ground Maintenance Team did some Planting of Bulbs in the grass areas on their land which brighten up the community early this year. They also cut back some of the branches off the trees around the Street Lights where the people from Southern Electric had put in the new street lamp posts earlier in the year when there were no leaves on the trees. The Pathway around the Park was Officially Opened by the Mayor of Test Valley Dorothy Baverstock on 9th March on behalf of Test Valley Borough Council with the Andover Advertiser there plus some of the Residents and children to see the opening and they planted some bulbs by the Bungalows at Jervis Court. Plus we have had 2 New Bench Seats put in as well. Utili-Light Team People also put in two New Street Lamp Post by the Bungalows at Jervis Court were it was so dark at a cost of £4000 which has made a big difference to the Residents in that area. Galamast Construction Team have put in the new foot bridge across the A3093 that leads to the A303 to Basingstoke. From Ladies Walk at London Road to Picket Twenty, the Concrete Pillars are in on both sides of the road. Plus they have also put in a Cycle & Footpath on the Ladies Walk side, that will come from Picket 20 down to the new underpass in London Road when finished. The Buses are now using both ways of the underpass and they go though it 10 to the hour going to P20 and 5 past the hour coming back to town. Some of the Residents on London Road have said that the Buses are going too fast along the road to and from the underpass past the Queen Charlotte Pub plus they have seen the Police using it as well going fast. So we don’t know if the CCTV Cameras are working yet. But we will find out for you from the right people. Page 3 News from Aster Communities Aster Communities. The youngest British admiral since Horatio Nelson , David Beatty was a charismatic and courageous leader who fought in most major engagements during the First World War. Commander-inChief of the Grand Fleet from 1916-1919 and First Sea Lord for an unprecedented period between 1919-1927, Beatty was one of the most influential figures in the Royal Navy in the early decades of the twentieth century. He joined the Navy at Gosport aged 13 in January 1884 and was assigned to HMS Alexandra, Mediterranean Fleet flagship. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1892, Beatty served in the corvette Ruby and battleships Camperdown and Trafalgar. Up to this point, there was nothing that marked out Beatty from his contemporaries. Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Beatty Major Battles. Following up success at Heligoland Bight in the first month of the war, Beatty's scored a further victory with an action at Dogger Bank in January 1915. Beatty's name however is most associated with possibly the greatest naval action of all, at Jutland in May 1916, where his impetuosity in attacking the German High Fleet both inflicted and suffered major losses until the arrival of the Grand Fleet. Following the Armistice declaration, on 21 November 1918 Beatty received, off the coast of Scotland at Rosyth, the surrender of the German High Fleet; comprising 90 ships plus a further 87 U-boats. Born. Died. Later Career. Appointed First Sea Lord that year, he served until 1927. First chairman of the Chief of Staff, Beatty strenuously argued that the fleet was the first line of Imperial defence and that Japan would be the next great threat. Retiring in 1927, but continued to advocate for the Royal Navy until his death on March 11, 1936. He was interred at St. Paul's Cathedral in London.
