LOWA started from humble beginnings in 1923 when Lorenz Wagner
founded LOWA as a work and outdoor boot company in Jetzendorf,
a small Bavarian village in southern Germany. Ninety years later,
LOWA is a worldwide brand, selling shoes in over 40 countries.
LOWA is still based in Jetzendorf where we produce the majority
of our classic board-lasted boots in a clean, modern factory.
We also manufacture in Italy and Slovakia, and make our
EVA-midsole trail running shoes in China.

The Simply More philosophy drives every aspect of our product design and is the catalyst for our ongoing innovations.

Our I-Lock™ design is a patented lace block inspired by climbing hardware that allows
the wearer to one-pull the lace for a secure hold.

We’re also introducing more boots with Flex™ Lacing, where the hardware is riveted to
free floating tabs to reduce the pressure across the top of the foot when the foot flexes.

In our growing Trail Running category, LOWA brings innovation with our STG 3D midsole
and sole units, and with our new laser-perforated leather that delivers breathability
that’s equal to mesh and far softer, especially around the ankle where many shoes chafe.
Soft to the touch – Pfiff!

LOWA’s C4 tongue (another patented feature), has 15 pieces of leather and other materials
that have to be cut, skived, glued and stitched together, requiring far more effort and
expense than conventional three-piece tongues. Our C4 tongue wraps comfortably around
the leg, doesn’t slip, and flexes with your ankle, so we think that it’s worth it. A 15-piece
tongue really is Simply More.
There’s plenty of Simply More in our ATC category. Our MONOWRAP® injected polyurethane construction is far more expensive that the alternatives but it ensures that
the customer ends up with supremely comfortable, durable light hiker. The Renegade
Mid,with approximately 200 pieces and a similar number of hand-done construction
steps,is another example of our attention to detail. It’s widely considered the most
reliable, easy to fit boot on the retailer’s wall, with thousands of satisfied consumers
who’ve purchased multiple pairs over the years. Clearly this repeat business — and
the happy testimonials that we hear every day — confirm that the effort that goes into
a Renegade is worth it.

The I-Core™ stabilizer is featured in the Weisshorn GTX®, one of our premier Mountaineering boots. I-Core™ uses carbon fiber technology to increase sole stiffness and reduce
weight, which translates to a more responsive boot.
As we look to the future, we use our tradition as our guide. We remain rooted in our home village of Jetzendorf. We’ve spent more than €500,000 in recent years to ensure that the air our employees
and neighbors breathe is clean and that no chemicals enter the stream that runs behind our factory and into the meadow next door. We prefer to keep the water clean and the cows that drink it
healthy. There’s a proverb that says “a bird doesn’t soil its nest.” Neither should the boot makers.
Making boots more comfortable, developing new innovations to help them fit better and using the highest quality of materials and constructions has served us well in the past and will continue
to be among our guidelines moving forward. Simply More is our approach...but Pfiff sounds more fun!

Adventures
The world of mountaineering boots is as diverse as the
high mountains that climbers and mountaineers play in.
At LOWA, our team of high altitude athletes includes
Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, who in August 2011 became
the first woman to summit all of the world’s 8000 meter
peaks without supplementary oxygen. Gerlinde and her
husband and fellow LOWA athlete Ralf Dujmovits helped
us develop the Expedition 8000 RD. LOWA athlete Ines
Papert, one of the world’s foremost sport ice climbers,
has been instrumental in helping us develop the Ice Comp
IP and Vertical GTX . All of these boots are important
because when you build for the world’s best alpinists,
you learn things that can apply to boots for the average
hiker and backpacker. Case in point: We developed the
Expert sole unit because of our work with these athletes.
The Expert sole maintains the rigidity needed for crampon
compatibility and is more comfortable than any other sole
in its class because of the PU incorporated into the unit.
After all, comfort is as important in the world of alpinism
as it is anywhere.

¬ A new, patented LOWA design, I-Lock is a simple cam lace loop
placed at the top of the foot. It grabs the lace and holds it tight
so the foot can be firmly held and supported while allowing
for flexible shaft lacing. Pushing the hook clip upwards easily
releases the clamping to loosen the instep lacing.

For as long as anyone can remember, trekking through
the Alps has been a way of life. Trekkers carry a light
pack with some bread and cheese, some water, maybe
a camera and some rain gear, and go from hut to hut or
from a tram station onto the trails. When it comes to
their boots, trekkers want comfort. They want to put their
boots on every Sunday and have them feel good week after
week. They want support and stability, and they want
climate control, which is why we have integrated our
Climate System into both leather-lined and GORE-TEX®
models, to help keep feet drier and more comfortable.
The flagship model of LOWA’s Trekking collection is the
Trekker — a venerable boot that has been on the market
now for 30 years(!). The Trekker is known as the most
comfortable boot in the outdoor footwear marketplace.
But we can’t rest on our laurels, so updates to this
collection include Camino GTX®, Mauria GTX® for
women and our Focus models which bring lightweight
construction and design to new levels.
In our new models, we’ve integrated the LOWA Flex® lace

Glove Leather, for a Natural Custom Fit
We are one of the few bootmakers that continues to use un-dyed soft nappa glove leather as a lining material. We do so
because many hikers and backpackers prefer the incredible custom fit, comfort and long life that a high quality glove
leather provides. Although it requires a longer break-in period than a synthetic lining, once it is broken in, glove leather
lining forms closely to the foot and retains foot shape far better than synthetic linings. It can also absorb twice its weight
in moisture by wicking sweat off the foot, making it much cooler than synthetic linings.
We uses soft German cowhide glove leather that’s 1 -1.5mm thick for our leather lining.

Types of Leather UPPERS
We use a variety of leather types for our boots’ uppers:
¬ Smooth leather – Upper layers of the hide, not as scratch resistant.
¬ Nubuck leather – A full-grain leather, lightly brushed, moderately scratch resistant and stable,
ideal for trekking boots.
¬ Split leather – Middle layers of the hide, visible grain, very durable
¬ “Roughout” (“Hunting”) leather – Very durable surface, optimal for Alpine boots.
All of the leather that we use for uppers and linings is processed in Europe under the world’s most stringent and careful
tanning standards, for minimal impact and maximum quality.
Leather continues to be our preferred material for most of our Classic and ATC boots. Cowhides in a unfinished state are
approximately 6 to 8 mm thick and must therefore be split. During the tanning process it’s decided where the splitting
will occur — whether it will be a thicker full-grain leather and a thinner split-leather or vice-versa.

Outdoor multi-function, day hikers, weekend hikers,
do-it-in-a-day — call it what you want. We call these
boots our All Terrain Collection or ATC for short. ATC
boots are made for lightweight hiking, scrambling over
some rocks, traveling to far away destinations, jumping
on a mountain bike or out of an airplane on a dare! ATC
boots need to fit and be comfortable. They need to be
rugged and durable. They need to be lightweight. LOWA’s
ATC shoes are made with an injected PU construction
that holds the upper to the sole. PU lasts far longer than
other cushioning materials commonly used in light boots.
PU also absorbs shock, rebounds and provides comfort
underfoot. As part of our midsole, we inject a MONOWRAP®
frame to help support the upper, which also allows us
to use lighter weight materials to reduce overall boot
weight. (The more pronounced the frame, the lighter the
materials we can use.) PU MONOWRAP® is the secret
sauce that makes LOWA ATC shoes different from others

PU vs EVA
We believe in Polyurethane (PU) for midsoles. It’s a terrific
shock absorber, rebounds well, has a long life and is durable.
A PU midsole will last longer on the trail and offer better comfort
throughout days and miles of use. You will get two to five times
the performance life compared to molded EVA midsoles. PU,
whether we cement it to the boot like on a Backpack boot or
inject it as on an ATC shoe, has very little manufacturing waste
and is a much cleaner product to work with.
We use EVA when light weight is a primary design factor such
as in the Vajolet GTX® or Gavia GTX®. These boots are intended
for those who need to travel light and fast. Our Edge™ midsole
is a double molded EVA where the material is more dense than
a normally molded EVA midsole, with more durable and stable
sidewalls. Most importantly, the surfaces are prepared for gluing
using a non-toxic UV treatment and not the typical chemical
bath. These midsoles are made in Italy and cost more. But, with
added durability, lifespan and reduced impact, we think you will

INTO NEW TERRITORY
Trail Running shoes are a bit of a departure for LOWA;
they are only shoes we make in Asia. We do so because
we can’t make EVA midsoles in Europe, and we need to
use EVA because light weight is a paramount criterion
for runners. That said, LOWA trail runners are different.
We’ve incorporated our STG® technology into a 3D version
for a combination of stability and cushioning. And we’ve
made sure to include bi-directional lugs into the soles
to make sure you don’t slip on wet and muddy trails.
For 2013, we’re introducing laser etched
and perforated leather on the new S-Cloud
models. This leather breathes as well as
mesh but provides LOWA’s legendary
durability, is as soft as synthetics, and the
richness of a leather shoe is unmatched.
