Letter from the President
A
s the Breast Cancer Alliance mission statement makes clear, our job is to
provide funding that will one day help doctors eliminate breast cancer as a
threat to women’s health. That includes supporting cutting edge research,
training breast surgeons in the latest techniques that advance care and
improve outcomes, and providing outreach and education services so that
underserved women in our area have access to detection and treatment that can
save their lives.
To assemble the resources that enable our mission, we rely on our many generous
donors, each of whom has a personal reason to support the fight against breast
cancer. Some have had the disease themselves and know firsthand the fear,
disruption and sheer physical toll that comes along with a diagnosis. Some know
breast cancer through relatives, friends or co-workers and have witnessed the
struggle that goes along with overcoming this disease.
People choose to support us in a variety of ways. Some give directly, through large
individual gifts that underwrite a research grant or through small checks given
in honor of someone they know. Some people enjoy attending festive occasions,
celebrating the opportunity to help others while embracing the accomplishment
that comes with donating to the BCA’s many successes. Still others participate
in BCA-sponsored or community events, preferring to take part in inspirational
or educational activities that focus on the disease and how it affects the people
in our towns and neighborhoods. And many of our friends patronize shopping
events and special sales given by our corporate and retail partners that
benefit the BCA.
Raising funds is one part of what we do every year. The more difficult part is
deciding how to invest those funds. Where will they do the most good? Is it better
to invest in research that potentially benefits all women or should we devote
our resources to breast health care for underserved women in our community?
There is no right answer, but the BCA attempts to do a bit of both. We typically
designate 75% of the funds we raise for research grants and surgery fellowships.
The remainder supports education and outreach services at local organizations.

This review of 2011 offers a look at how we raised critical funds and how
we allocated them. In 2011 the research grant expense included those grants
approved by the board of directors in 2011 that were paid in January of 2012 and
increased the expense by approximately $437, 500. In future years the research
grant expense will consist of those grants approved by the board of directors in
the current fiscal years. We are proud of our accomplishments last year, and with
your continued help, we look forward to broadening our reach, and our impact,
in 2012 and beyond.

Raising
Funds
to Find a Cure
I
n 2011, our friends and sponsors hosted several events, large and small, to
benefit the Breast Cancer Alliance. Here is a look at the social and educational
gatherings that encouraged donations to the BCA and allowed us to continue
pursuing a cure for breast cancer.
In the spring, the BCA Junior Committee, made up of area high school students,
hosted its seventh annual fashion show and silent auction at Richards of Greenwich.
The event, a fun look at the season’s upcoming styles, is the teen group’s top
fundraiser, raising money to support breast cancer outreach and case managerial
services for underserved women at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven,
CT. The Junior Committee also gathered more than 100 teens and adults to work
out at their first-ever “Spin to Win” event at Sportsplex in Stamford.

The entire community got involved in supporting our cause in May through
the sixth annual Breast Cancer Alliance “Hands Across the Avenue” walk down
Greenwich Avenue, led by Grand Marshal Dr. Dickerman Hollister, Jr. Beginning
and ending in the Richards parking lot, the walk is a fun and celebratory way for
friends and families to honor breast cancer survivors, to remember those they
lost, and to promote breast health.
In the summer, we handed the planning over to our new “Men in Pink Committee,”
who organized an evening of dining and dancing at The Loading Dock in Stamford.
Dubbed “The Pink Party,” the social gathering was a rousing success, attracting
more than 250 people, united in their mission to raise awareness of breast cancer
and provide funds to find a cure. Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei even
issued a proclamation declaring June 16th “Men in Pink Day.”
The fall featured several events, including the annual BCA flag raising at Greenwich
Town Hall to remind the community of our cause and to kick off Breast Cancer
Awareness month. This year’s flag was raised by long time supporters Paula
and Bob Burton and featured a presentation by Dr. Barbara Ward of Greenwich
Hospital, who spoke about new advances in the surgical treatment of breast
cancer. The BCA also hosted a women’s golf tournament that combined fun and
fundraising, and we were honored at several coffee and cocktail gatherings at
volunteers’ homes.

Benefit Luncheon
and Fashion Show
The highlight of our yearly fundraising efforts is our October Benefit Luncheon and
Fashion Show, sponsored by Mitchells/Richards and held at the Hyatt Regency
Greenwich. The 2011 show, Hats Off to Health, co-chaired by Patricia Burns and
Amanda Davis, was attended by more than 700 guests, who all came to support
our mission. Attendees heard guest speaker and breast cancer survivor Cokie
Roberts, commentator and analyst for ABC News and National Public Radio,
address the continuing need for active involvement in breast cancer advocacy.
Throughout the year, many local retailers and other organizations supported our
activities as well. McArdle’s hosted its twelfth annual Sales Days in April and
Noble Salon once again supported the BCA through its “A Noble Cause” monthlong event.
Countless other groups raised funds for the BCA through sales events and
promotions - we thank you all for your tireless efforts in support of our mission.

I
n 2011, the BCA awarded five research grants, two breast surgery fellowships
and eleven education and outreach grants.
The research grants funded innovative research projects at leading cancer
research institutions in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
The studies we selected looked at whether scientists can find markers for
predicting which breast cancers will spread, whether they can find triggers that
cause breast cancer recurrence, and whether doctors can come up with better
breast reconstruction techniques.
Our breast surgery fellowships provided two physicians with an extra year
of specialized training to improve the quality of breast cancer surgery and
reconstruction and to eventually help build a base of experienced breast
surgeons throughout this country. It is our hope that over time, women who need
breast surgery will have the benefit of seeing surgeons with the special skills and
knowledge to provide the most up to date, highest quality care.

We funded a variety of educational efforts, including breast cancer resource
notebooks geared toward patients at local hospital breast centers and printed
information on breast cancer basics available in several languages. We supported
the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day program at the Greenwich YWCA.
We provided financial support to programs at several hospitals and community
service centers. Those programs offer free screening mammograms, ultrasounds
and follow up care when breast cancer is detected. They support mobile
mammography services to reach people in their communities when they cannot
easily get to medical centers. Our funds also help pay for patient navigators to
guide people through the unfamiliar medical processes. And finally, our money
often helps patients obtain ancillary services associated with a breast cancer
diagnosis, including transportation, child care, exercise programs, support
groups, and language translation. Those services can often make the difference
between someone getting the care she needs or going without.

We choose our grant recipients through a very careful vetting
process, supported by our knowledgeable Grants Committee
and our Independent External Review Committee. We want the
money we give to work efficiently and fund studies with promise
in the areas of detection, treatment, or prevention. Similarly, we
expect the outreach programs we fund to measurably improve
breast care in our community. We are proud of the selections we
made in 2011 and we hope they will advance our understanding of
this disease, move us closer to a cure, and ensure that women in our
community are empowered to take charge of their breast health.
