RADIANCE RADIANCEA quality of brightness and happiness… A warm, soft light that shines... A yearbook of the School of Health Sciences (HS), 2016 Ngee Ann Polytechnic Contents Director’s Note 04 HS Mission Statement 05 Organisational Chart 06 The Staff 07 Memories in HS 16 Overseas Experience 20 In Profile 28 Class of 2016 33 Future Plans 48 DIRECTOR’S NOTE The direction at HS has always been driven by our mission statement. I am heartened that staff and students constantly look for ways to distinguish and challenge themselves. Last year, we launched a new initiative by sending Year 1 nursing students overseas for their clinical attachment to the Philippines and Taiwan as part of their curriculum. We were not short of applicants for this new initiative. Those who participated benefitted from the learning in a new healthcare environment, caring for patients with different health conditions and receiving guidance from the Filipino and Taiwanese staff nurses. In addition, staff have constantly adopted an innovative approach in their teaching pedagogy through the use of information communication technology (ICT). The innovative use of ICT tools creates new learning spaces that provide opportunities for you to develop content knowledge and critical thinking. This new approach through collaborative and self-directed learning has shaped your professional behaviour and attitudes. Staff champions of this unique ecosystem of ICT enabled innovations in HS are receiving the 2016 Academic Development Award during the Graduation Ceremony. My heartiest congratulations to the class of 2016! The School of Health Sciences (HS) crossed the 10th year milestone last year and with that, we launched our new mission statement which is “to be the leading health sciences educational institution grooming compassionate and thinking healthcare professionals through excellence in education, research and innovative pedagogy to serve the needs of the community and industry”. Serving the local and overseas communities is another significant feature of HS. Many of you have been active in service learning by participating in the numerous Youth Expedition Programmes in regional countries such as the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. You have shared about the transformational experiences in your reflections when you witnessed how people in these countries lead simple lifestyles and yet are happy and how that debunks the myth that only wealth can bring happiness. Moreover, many of you have actually had a change in your perspective of Singapore, your homeland, upon returning from these trips. Three years have flown by very quickly. You are now at the threshold of yet another journey ahead. It is going to be both exciting and challenging. My colleagues and I are confident that you will do well and will continue to make us proud. HS will always be a home you can return to for a visit, career consultation or simply to chat; we are just a mouse click away. My warmest wishes to all ! Dr Phang Chiew Hun Director 04 I RADIANCE HS MISSION STATEMENT To be the leading health sciences educational institution grooming compassionate and thinking healthcare professionals through excellence in education, research and innovative pedagogy to serve the needs of the community and industry. Nurse’s Pledge In full knowledge of the obligations I am undertaking, I PROMISE to provide a competent standard of care for the sick, regardless of race, religion and status, sparing no effort to alleviate suffering and promote health and to refrain from any action which might endanger life. I will respect at all times the dignity of the patients under my care, holding in confidence all personal information entrusted to me. I will maintain my professional knowledge and skill at the highest level and give support and co-operation to all members of the health team. I will abide by the Singapore Nursing Board Standards of Practice for Nurses and Midwives, and be responsible and accountable at all times for my nursing actions and decisions. I will do my utmost to honour the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct of the Singapore Nursing Board. I will uphold the integrity of the professional nurse. My classmates made lessons enjoyable and were my pillars of support throughout the stressful examinations as well as during clinical sessions at our Optometry Centre. Throughout my three years, I was mentored by the most passionate and patient team of lecturers and supervisors. In Optometry, I was given many opportunities to serve by participating in community eye screenings. I also volunteered for Youth Expedition Projects (YEP) to Vietnam and Myanmar. These trips allowed me to hone my skills whilst benefitting the under-privileged villagers. During my internship, I had the chance to experience diverse career prospects, encompassing research, retail and the medical sectors. Optometry has not only equipped me with the required knowledge to be part of the multi-disciplinary healthcare profession, but it also instilled a spirit of benevolence and love for the community. Amanda Lim The gift of sight - so invaluable yet most often taken for granted. The inability to fully appreciate the amazing beauty of the world would be unimaginable. I took interest in the mechanism and function of the eye since I first learnt about it during Biology lessons in secondary school. After enrolling into Optometry, my passion grew and I endeavoured to pursue my dream of being an eye care professional. 28 I RADIANCE IN PROFILE palliative care patients, the wonders of medication is minimal, contrasting that of acute patient care. It was here that I saw the spirit of humanity at its finest, through many small ways and actions. I would never forget what the nurse told me along the corridor on that day, “This is not a normal corridor… people die here daily. Our duty is not to add days to their lives, but to add life to their remaining days”. My years of service as a cadet, then as an officer with the St. John Ambulance Brigade and my memories of volunteering at a hospice motivated me to take up nursing as a lifelong profession. It drove me to pursue a Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing) at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, School of Health Sciences. The high standards of assessment, clinical exposure from different clinical settings, inter disciplinary education and overseas exposure moulded me into the nurse I am today. A nurse that’s confident, compassionate, resilient and clinically competent. Jacob Tan As a young St. John Ambulance cadet that had many volunteer Nurses and Doctors as my mentors, it inspired me to go beyond just first aid. I remember I was on duty with my officer at the National Day parade. A young boy went into a fit and I was assisting her in managing the casualty. She was swift and accurate in her assessment and decision-making. She was clear of what needed to be done. I realised then that nursing skills actually enable me to help people better. As a senior cadet, alongside with junior cadets, we spent three weeks of our school vacation, volunteering at Assisi Hospice. The care rendered to the residents by the nursing team showed me the important role nursing plays. For Through the three years at NP and HS, I have grown in ways I would have never imagined. Block 81 was a place that played a big part of my life as a student. I have so many fond memories with my friends and classmates there. From studying together at the benches to panicking outside our NSL labs before our practical exams, from doing jump shots after each exam to taking our graduation photos at the gardens, celebrating everything we achieved even if it is something small. I will always hold it dear. Many of us would have different plans after we leave HS, but ultimately we work for the betterment of humanity and society. Personally, my patients would always be my source of inspiration and motivation. As I continue to grow in nursing, I would be serving as a Staff Nurse at the Singapore General Hospital and thereafter, complete a degree in nursing. I’m excited to apply what I’ve learnt and upgrade myself for the betterment of my patients. Class of 2016, many of us wouldn’t imagine ourselves standing at where we are now three years back, but we did it and I think it is important to celebrate every milestone in life. Thank you for the wonderful three years and my heartiest congratulations! RADIANCE I 29 IN PROFILE Despite a very packed and busy schedule, we had many chances to attend enrichment programmes and leadership camps. Participating in field trips, hands on activities and overseas learning programmes were really worthwhile as they were fun and exciting. In Year 2 and 3, we even had the chance to practise our skills that we had learnt on real life patients. A white coat ceremony was held to recognise us for our achievements in the course as well. Overseas programmes allowed me to give back to society and those in need. It was definitely an eye opener when we realised that many people in the world had no access to primary eye care. It made me treasure what I have and compels me to work harder to become a better professional eye care provider. Being one of the most difficult courses to study, perseverance and hard work is the only way to great achievements. Thank you, HS! Koh Jia Lin Influenced by friends to join the course back in secondary school, I’m extremely glad I got a chance to go through this wonderful experience. 30 I RADIANCE IN PROFILE I feel that the course is comprehensive and interesting because of the way the lessons are carried out through lab lessons, clinic duties through internships. It would be a rewarding and promising career after I graduate, judging from the statistical projection of the demand for optometrists in the near future. It was a lovehate relationship with Optometry. There were many difficulties faced, but they were to be expected. Lixin I was drawn to the structure of the Optometry course, whilst reading about it in the school’s course brochure. In year 1, the focus was on building up your optometry knowledge so it became a very content-heavy course which had thrown me off a couple of times during lessons and examinations. But I was glad to be able to overcome those hurdles and started to love the course. I find joy when participating in eye screenings as it gives me a chance to serve the community with the knowledge that the school has equipped me with. I felt a great sense of satisfaction because I am able to help my countrymen protect their eyes. I believe that these three years have matured me; not only academically but also in my personal development. To my fellow juniors, Optometry is definitely not an easy course to study, but stay focussed on your goals, keep a clean track record, find ways to motivate yourself to be consistent in your work. I am sure success will be yours to reap. RADIANCE I 31 IN PROFILE Inspired by Florence Nightingale, I saw how the nursing profession could help equip me with the knowledge and skills needed to serve people. Thus, the journey of my nursing career began with HS. HS equipped me with what I needed to be a nurse, impacting patients’ lives. HS does this with its excellent curriculum, careful, yet exciting students’ exposure to social surveys among the poor and also through participation in research congress. One of the greatest blessings to be in the HS family is having the companionship of a great bunch of lecturers who journey with us through our ups and downs in our training, carefully fortifying us with the necessary level of professionalism for the healthcare industry. Someone once shared with me, “Many small people, who in many small places, do many small things, can alter the face of the world”. Let us learn to be wholehearted in the small things that we do, because it is through those small things that we could make a difference in a person’s life, and in the world. Peng Cheng Yu My quest to pursue nursing started with a calling to help the poor and needy. I grew up in an environment that nurtured me to serve the community in ways that go beyond providing physical and emotional support. 32 I RADIANCE CLASS OF 2016 DIPLOMA IN HEALTH SCIENCES (NURSING) Front Row (Left to Right): Li Xiao Jing, Ms Caroline Lee, Li Xiaodan, Muhammad Qays Shabeer Bin Affandi, Kayampu Kohhila.
