The Emperor’s summer resort
“Die Weilburg von Ost” by Vinzent Reim
Franz I., the “Good Emperor”, came to Baden for a
cure for the first time in 1796 and promptly fell in
love with the charming little town south of Vienna. From then on, he spent nearly every summer
in Baden and appointed the city as his official “Imperial summer residence” from 1804 to 1834. Architecture, art and gardening culture experienced
a golden age at this time. Architects like Carl von
Moreau, Josef Kornhäusel and Otto Wagner left
their mark in the form of lavish town houses, palaces or beautiful squares.
“Gelt das Moll thut dir woll?” –
The great genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
went to the thermal town of Baden several times
during the last years of his life. And even though it
was the warm sulphurous waters that caught the
interest of the master, he did not come for his own
sake but for that of his beloved Konstanze who
spent the weeks of her cure here. Enough reason
for a jealous Mozart to return to Baden time and
again. It was here where he met his friend, commissioned schoolteacher and choir conductor
Monsieur Anton de Stoll of Baaden.
It must have been a friendship made rather merry
by wine because Mozart, famous for his “wicked
tongue”, once started a letter to his friend with
the lines: “Dearest Stoll, best doll! Greatest troll!
The wine, it took its toll! – The Moll (wine), it does
you well, right?” So one can well imagine Mozart and Stoll returning to the city after enjoying
a few glasses of new wine, going through the
“Lumpentürl” – a small door for those arriving after the city wall was already locked for the night.
As a royal present of an immortal master, he wrote
what is probably the most beautiful motet of the
entire musical literature, “Ave verum corpus”, in a
single night on June 17, 1791, for his friend, Anton
Stoll. The piece was performed for the first time
one week later in the parish church of St. Stephan
with the master himself playing the organ.
The presence of the emperor quickly caused an
influx of aristocracy and wealthy bourgeois who
had wonderful buildings erected in Baden. The
reputation of the city grew even more because
of the presence of renowned artists and composers. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van
Beethoven, Johann Strauß senior and junior, and
Franz Grillparzer are just a few of the names on a
list of great persons who regularly spent time in
the city. Beethoven composed his Symphony No
9 with the “Ode to joy” here, which is why Baden is
also called the “City of the anthem of Europe”. The
great composers of that time founded a cultural
tradition in Baden that endures to this day.

Arnulf Rainer Museum
The Arnulf Rainer Museum combines an architectural jewel with the work of a contemporary artist
who is renowned worldwide.
The clearly structured Frauenbad, built in 1821,
whose prehistory is documented all the way back
to Roman days, was turned into a museum of the
highest level in 2009 and dedicated to the exceptional artist Arnulf Rainer who was born in Baden
in 1929. Arnulf Rainer’s work that plays such a
central part in the collections of the greatest museums in the world can thus provide a comprehensive impression with exhibitions, events and
publications to a regional as well as international
audience.
