INTERNATIONAL
EXPERIENCE
As globalisation alters economic landscape, infrastructure owners and
operators, airport authorities, and government agencies engage GHD to
work in collaboration with them to deliver world-class iconic projects.
The World’s Tallest Building
The centrepiece of a huge mixed-use development,
the 160-storey Burj Dubai Tower is expected to rise
to more than 700 metres, 200 metres higher than
the current tallest building in Taipei.
GHD was commissioned to design and review
the installation of a cathodic protection system
to conserve the reinforced concrete piles and raft
foundation, as well as provide advice regarding
methods to secure the longer-term durability of
the foundation. The team was further engaged as
the Independent Verification and Testing Agency to
assess the concrete, steel and other key materials
used in the project.
GHD is playing a critical role in quality control and
maintaining low variability in the concrete. Structural
construction will be completed in 2008.
KHALIFA STADIUM DOHA
The Khalifa Sports City Development Committee
awarded GHD two contracts to redevelop the
Khalifa Sports City, involving upgrade of the
stadium, and landscape redevelopment over an area
of 95 hectares.
GHD delivered the design, project management and
construction phase services for the AUD170 million
stadium upgrade, which include new roof and
lighting arch. Other works included increasing
the seating capacility to 40,000, with VIP and
corporate lounges and new athlete, media and
administrative facilities.

The Khalifa Stadium was the main venue for 2006
Asia Games in Doha.
Sharjah International
Airport
GHD is providing project management, contract
administration and construction phase services for
a major expansion and redevelopment program for
Sharjah International Airport in Dubai.
The company also delivered the detailed design and
tendering on behalf of the Sharjah Airport Authority.
The design of the new buildings has been carefully
crafted to enable the significant increase in space
to complement the existing design lines. Achieving
this result was a challenge because the new design
includes 20,000 square metres of new floor area
and 21,000 square metres of refurbished area to
cope with increases in passenger demand.
The magnificent Palms
takes shape
GHD is playing a pivotal role in the creation of the
world’s largest man-made island complex off Dubai,
called the Palms. The three island developments
– The Palm Jumeirah, The Palm Jebel Ali and The
Palm Diera – are each in the form of a palm tree and
surrounded by a crescent-shaped breakwater.
For both projects GHD also provided environmental
analysis, transport planning, maritime infrastructure
assessment, concept design, and coastal analysis

IN NEGERI SEMBILAN
MASTER PLAN STUDY FOR THE
WATER SUPPLY OF MIRI, SARAWAK
GHD provided the technical advisory and
engineering services for the review of the dam
design located at Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan.
With the Malaysian Government’s plans for the full
industrialisation of the country by 2020, the water
supply of Sarawak’s major industrial city and oil
town, Miri, is being examined. Following predictions
for considerable population growth made in a 1985
water supply master plan, GHD has been engaged
along with a local consultant to prepare a second
master plan water study in which capacity and
performance of the existing water treatment plant
are being reviewed. A strategy plan is also being
produced to upgrade the water plant to meet
projected demand by 2030.
To meet rising demand for water in Negeri
Sembilan, the state government embarked on
a project to enhance supply. The RM87 mil
Gemencheh Dam is expected to generate an
additional 45.5 million litres of water per day for
the residents in Negeri Sembilan.
The study has identified that significant savings on
capital investments can be achieved for the water
treatment plant by addressing bottlenecks within the
process system.

Bintulu Urban and Regional
Study, Sarawak
Situated on the coast, Bintulu has experienced
rapid growth over the last two decades. Its
economic base has changed from fishing to
a thriving industrial centre, driven primarily by
natural resources including oil and natural gas,
petrochemical products, agriculture (palm oil
plantations), forestry, wood based manufacturing
and fishing.
Other important developments include new
highways and roads, further development of
the port, a new international airport and the
establishment of several new townships.
The local authority has a vision of transforming
Bintulu into a ‘Friendly Garden City’ by the year
2020. This requires integrated planning for the
urban and rural regions.
To help achieve this vision, GHD was engaged to:
»Prepare a ‘Regional Strategic Development
Plan’. The plan will guide the growth of Bintulu
over the next 20 years. Development of the plan
involves identifying suitable areas and models
for growth, and developing implementation
strategies (including timing and costs) to plan for
sustainable economic development of the area,
while also protecting the natural environment
and people’s quality of life.
»Develop ‘Structure and Local Plans’ for the
larger urban centres such as Bintulu, Tatau and
Kuala Similajau. Action plans will be prepared
to guide infrastructure development and more
detailed local plans for the smaller urban centres
will be created.
Miri Regional Study, Sarawak
The Miri Regional Study is an integrated urban
and regional plan that will create a “Strong and
Sustainable” Miri Division by 2020. The strategy
of the study includes actions that will protect and
enhance biodiversity and reduce the inequalities
between urban and rural communities.
It aims to provide new road access to remote
villages, integrated tourism and to support
downstream economic development as well as
providing value adding opportunities for logging
and plantation forestry activities, and a platform
for structural transformation of the Miri
agricultural sector.
This study also introduced initiatives to support
livestock and fisheries development in Miri, new
regional transport hub capabilities and water and
wastewater improvement plans for urban areas.
Miri was then declared a “Resort City” in May 2005.
23
ACCOMMODATING URBAN
GROWTH IN KUCHING CITY
Satok Bridge provides the only link connecting
the State Government’s Adminstration Centre of
Petra Jaya with the urban amenities of Kuching
city. Population growth and urban development has

commuters to have easier access to the Kuching
town centre.
Following the management by GHD of the design
and construction of the four-lane bridge in the
1970’s, we undertook the detailed analysis of
projected traffic demands, concept design and
project management in 1993 for another two lanes
of expansion works.
With the assistance of our Malaysian engineers,

DUTA PLAZA CONDITION SURVEY
GHD completed the condition survey of the Duta
Plaza commercial retail and hotel complex for the
Malaysian arm of Leighton Contractors. The Duta
Plaza, which is located opposite of Petronas Twin
Towers of Kuala Lumpur, came to an abrupt halt
in the Asian economic crisis in 1997, with five of
the six basement levels flooded. GHD undertook a
comprehensive investigation of the building defects
and made recommendations for repairs.
BEACH NOURISHMENT WORKS IN
PORT DICKSON
GHD was engaged on the beach rehabilitation works
that involved the nourishment through hydraulic
filling with approved sea sand of Port Dickson.
Works span a distance of 5.1km, from Bagan
Pinang to Tanjung Lembah.
Discovery Gardens, a 420,000 square meter
development in Dubai, is a pre-designed complex
comprised of themed communities in a variety of
garden experiences, which include Mediterranean,
Zen, Contemporary, Cactus, Mogul and
Mesoamerican.

AN ELEGANT DESIGN IN DOHA
The Al Bidda Tower is the first of many such
landmark buildings being constructed on Doha’s
waterfront esplanade.
GHD completed the design – from the initial
concept to the final development – and it conforms
to exceptional standards of aesthetics, quality
and excellence. Among the features incorporated
into the tower are elevations derived from the
concept of a tornado. The design creates a unique
twist in the tower that gives the impression of
dynamic movement.
Al Bidda is much like a sculpture with its glass
façade. It will shine in the Gulf sunlight, presenting a
different appearance from each angle of observation.
The façade is formed from the utilisation of an
unconventional diagonal curtain wall, which
accommodates varying floor plates and results in an
elegant waisted spiralling surface that culminates at
the top with an illuminated chamfered roof.
The tower includes commercial office space on all
43 levels and offers a panoramic view of the Gulf’s
magnificent blue water.
