Christingle: a Christmas Tradition
Many churches and schools celebrate Christmas with a candle in an
orange. But why does it happen and where does this fascinating
tradition come from?
The roots of the practice lie with John de Watteville in Germany and
an attempt to get children to think about Jesus. He started the
tradition in 1747 in his Moravian Church congregation. At the time
it was just a candle with a red ribbon given to each child.
But it wasn't made popular in the UK until 1968 when John Pensom,
described in his Church Times obituary as "Mr Christingle", used it
as a fundraising event for the Children's Society charity.
Children would bring purses with money and receive an orange pierced with a candle in return.
A Christingle usually consists of:
An orange, representing the world,
A red ribbon wrapped around it, or a paper frill around the candle, representing the blood of
Christ,
Dried fruits and/or sweets skewered on four cocktail sticks pushed into the orange, representing
the fruits of the earth and the four seasons.
A candle pushed into the centre of the orange, then lit, representing Jesus Christ as Light of the
World.
Aluminium foil, representing the metal nails driven into Christ's hands and feet during his
crucifixion.
In the Binsey Ministry there are lots of services taking place where you can take your family to
make Christingles of their own…

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!
The Revd
Peter Streatfeild
‘love the Lord
our God
with all our
heart, soul,
mind and
strength,
and to love
our
neighbour as
our self’
“What is he on about?”, you may be asking yourself. The new year is a
month away. Well the Church year actually began on 29th November with
Advent Sunday. In the Binsey Team we celebrated the beginning of
another year with prayer and praise and fellowship in the Community
Centre, Fletchertown. The word Advent is a derivative from the Latin verb
‘to come’ so this season of four weeks is the time when Christians all over
the world reflect upon the reasons for Jesus, the Son of God, coming into
the world as an ordinary human baby. They also think about him coming
again into our world and into our lives as they prepare to celebrate his
birthday on Friday, 25th December. Nowadays we in the West are swamped
by all the glitter and lights of celebration and parties as so many folk have
forgotten the real reason for Jesus being born in a stable in Bethlehem and
growing up as part of a poor carpenter’s family in Nazareth.
Seeing all the refugees on our television news tramping across Europe
reminds me of the trouble Joseph faced as he walked to Bethlehem with an
heavily pregnant Mary. Just as the migrant families get to a safer place,
perhaps even a reception centre, they continue to face difficulties in finding
a place to rest so Joseph had a problem in finding a safe place for Mary to
have her baby because Bethlehem was overcrowded and the population
could not cope with the sudden influx of so many people. They had come
from all over the country because the occupying Roman government had
ordered them back to their places of birth so they could conduct a census
of everyone. When Joseph and Mary arrived there wasn’t a place anywhere
for the tired couple to rest and the baby was due any moment! Finally a
publican had sympathy on the Holy Family and made space for them in a
cattle shed or cave behind his inn and probably brought some fresh straw
round for Mary to lie on! Many of those running away from the violence that
is raging across the world arrive as strangers in a different country and,
despite facing some bureaucratic indifference and perhaps some
intolerance, have found some simple kindness like Joseph and Mary did all
those years ago.
Here in Cumbria we are isolated from the tragic race of thousands upon
thousands looking for shelter in a safe country and being counted as part of
that government census so, as you prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ
and celebrating his birthday on Friday, 25th December, Christmas Day,
remember the poor people who have trudged many miles across hostile
terrain as our Holy Family did, remember the anxious people looking for a
safe place to rest as Joseph and Mother Mary did, remember to pray for
and support your desperate neighbours, near and far.
Finally, remember that Jesus was born as one of us in order to experience
life as we know it, that we may follow his example and listen to what he
says through his words and actions as recorded in the Bible for all of us.
Let us try to do as he instructed us, to love the Lord our God with all our
heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love our neighbour as our self. In this
season of expectation and goodwill let us turn back to God and the real
reason for Jesus coming to us, Emmanuel, God with us!
Happy New Year and Christmas Blessings to you all!
Peter Streatfeild,
Team Vicar.

Baptism in the Binsey Team 2016
We are really pleased when parents approach us about Baptism (sometimes known as
Christening) for their child. It's a very important step both for the parents and for the child.
Infant Baptism involves parents, and Godparents making a public commitment about their
own Christian faith and the Church making a commitment to pray for their child, so that as
they grow, with their help and ours they may be able to live out in practice the Christian life.
To enable parents to do this we ask that you to come and join us in worship, either at any of
our Team Churches, or in other venues such as ‘Stepping Stones’ (café Church) at some
time in the two months BEFORE the date of baptism and to attend our Baptism Preparation
course (a short course of two sessions held in the evening).
Those bringing children to baptism need to attend each session but other family members are
really welcome to come along as well.

Do you want a Visit from the Church?
If you would like a visit from the Church, we have a group of people commissioned by the
Bishop to be our Pastoral Visitors, who along with the clergy are available and willing to visit
anyone either at home or in hospital or in a nursing home.
Maybe you know a person who is ill or is housebound for some reason and would just like to chat to
someone. Or possibly your neighbour has been taken into hospital? Maybe you’ve got small children and
would just like a bit of adult conversation?
You can ask for a visit for yourself, or for someone else, and a member of the team will get in touch to arrange a suitable time.
E.mail us at [email protected] or leave a message on 016973 71504. Or simply let one of the Churchwardens know and they will forward your request on to us.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here for you.

Mission Communities
Some months ago we reported on how the Diocese has been looking at how all parishes in Cumbria
can continue to be an important part of each community, whilst using our limited resources in the
best way. And so the idea of Mission Communities evolved which will mean a much closer working
between Anglican, Methodist and United Reformed Churches across the Diocese. Here in the
Binsey Team we have been planning for how we can best serve our individual communities yet
co-operate together to both support each other and to share the work load.
The first part of all our planning came about on 1st October when a new Pastoral Measure was
issued, bringing Embleton and Wythop into the Team along with an area south of Bassenthwaite
which incorporated the Calvert Trust and associated cottages. At this point we also became one
parish but maintain our individual Parish Churches with District Church Councils (DCC )which will
oversee the building and all that goes on there.
These changes will enable some of the work to be taken on by the overall Parochial Church Council
such as drawing up the accounts which will give people in our churches time to undertake other
things more profitably in our communities.
We have spent over a year drawing up the functions of the PCC and how our new DCCs will work
together. Legal processes require that we have an Extraordinary Annual Parochial Church Council
Meeting to ratify our way of working and to formally sign the document.
This will be taking place on Sunday January 31st at 11.45am immediately after our Team Service
which will begin at 10.30am in All Saints Church Boltongate.
Do come along to our Team Service ( no other services in team on this Sunday) which will be
followed by a bring and share lunch and hear about what we are doing and be part of our future
going forward.
New Pastoral Visitors to be Commissioned
Please come and support our 4 new Pastoral Visitors who will be
Commissioned by Bishop Robert for their new role on December 6th
at 6.30 at St Cuthbert's Church, Embleton
Our new Pastoral visitors come from different parts of our Team and
will be available to visit anyone who requests a visit.
STOP PRESS
The Binsey Team Ministry officially became one Parish on 1st October 2015 and now we are moving another step to becoming a Mission Community wherein we are all coming closer together to ensure that everyone knows God is for All. The leaders in Cumbria of the three denominations, the Revd Sarah Moore of the
United Reformed Church, the Revd Richard Teal of the Methodist Church and Bishop James Newcome and
Bishop Robert Freeman of the Church of England, are coming together to celebrate the recognition of the
Binsey Team Mission Community at a service of dedication and praise in St Michaels' Church Torpenhow at
7.00pm on Friday 29th January 2016.
Everyone is welcome to join in this significant and unique occasion

Allhallows Senior Citizens’ New Year Lunch Treat
This year we are organising lunch at the White Heather, Kirkbride on Wednesday 13th January. The coach
will pick up at Baggrow Brow at 11.20am and Fletchertown crossroads at 11.30am. Lunch will be at noon.
Please give names to Gillian Marr (016973 71478), Pauline Reed (016973 71415) or Jean Hodgson
(016973 71413) by December 20th.
The lunch is free for anyone over the age of 60 and/or and widow or widower living within Allhallows Parish.
Defibrillator
We’re delighted to say that the public access defibrillator has now been installed in the disused phone box in
Fletchertown (George Moore Ave). If anyone in the area dials 999 and a defibrillator is needed, the
Ambulance Service will direct the caller to the box and give them the access code and instructions.
Following cardiac arrest, the chances of survival decrease by 23% every minute so this is a fantastic, life
saving resource for our community as it will enable treatment to start before other medical services can
arrive. It has been made possible by the generosity of Green Urban (Penrith) and the wonderful efforts of
the local community at last year’s fund raising event. The machine will be looked after by the Aspatria &
District First Responders who will check it weekly.
The machines can be used without special training but in the new year there will be an awareness session
arranged in the Community Centre for anyone interested in seeing how the defibrillator works.
You can keep in touch with Aspatria & District First Responders via their Facebook page
(www.facebook.com/aspatriaresponders) or website (www.aspatria-responders.moonfruit.com).

Bassenthwaite Parish Council
Summary of the Meeting held on Thursday the 5th of November 2015 in the Parish Room, Bassenthwaite.
Cllrs Present: J Stephens, R J ames, K McMillan, S Langcake, H Reb, K Ar mstr ong &
N Harrop. Also present: Malcolm Grainger (Allerdale Borough Councillor) & E Clark (Clerk).
PCSO 5298 Jones apologised for being unable to attend the meeting but forwarded the following report; there had been one incident
reported to the police for the area of Bassenthwaite since the last meeting, an overview of this is; on the 24th of October Police
received a report of a group of youths setting fireworks off in close proximity to a property. The police would like to appeal to any
witness or persons with further information regarding this incident to contact them immediately on the telephone number 101. It was
noted that Catherine Smith was the new PCSO covering the Bassenthwaite Area.
Councillors attended the United Utilities Legacy meeting at Embleton Village Hall. A list of potential Bassenthwaite projects, taken
from the parish plan, were forwarded on at the meeting, these were; a footpath along the A591, a community minibus, conversion of
the street and footway lights, work to the church spire and clock, a traffic free cycle path along the A591 from Keswick and the
parish room refurbishment. It was stated that it would cost in the region of £300 million to put the pipeline in so UU want to leave a
lasting legacy in the area. At the meeting it wasn’t made clear how, or who, would decide on how the money was spent, or how
much money would be spent, it was a fairly inconclusive meeting, with no commitment from UU. The number of projects put
forward was quite extensive.
A reply letter from Sue Hayman (MP), with regards to the mobile library service stated; at the moment the West Cumbria Mobile
Library was not at risk, however sometime in the future the service might have to be looked at due to unprecedented levels of budget
cuts but Ms Hayman advised that she would do all she could to ensure the service continues. An email on the 2nd of November from
David Andrews of Stagecoach advised that the bus timetable had now changed to the winter service.
Cllr Grainger reported on the benefits of an oil buying syndicate and that grant money was available to residents in Allerdale for
homes that were not already fully centrally heated. Grants are for eligible households who either own or rent their home from a private landlord on a first come, first served basis. Your home must not have an existing mains gas connection or already have a full
central heating system. Further details available from the Clerk.
The mobile post office have changed their times from a morning visit to an afternoon visit which is from 2.15pm – 2.25pm.
Other items discussed included the parish room refurbishment, highway matters and this years parish christmas tree.
For a copy of the full November minutes please contact the clerk or see www.bassenthwaite.org.uk.
Next meeting Thursday 3rd of December 2015 in the Parish Room at 7.30pm. ALL PARISHIONERS WELCOME TO ATTEND

A knitted nativity scene created by our crafters during
our Monday sessions is now at home in the Museo de
Belenes del Mundo in Ojos, Murcia, Spain. It is a
museum collection of nativity scenes made of different materials from around the world. The director and
curator were delighted to accept our work since it is
the first one from England. So we are now the proud
owners of a certificate proving our work is on
display ..if you can read Spanish to understand it!
The figures were bought by our Treasurer’s sister for
donation to the museum and she has subsequently
ordered another set to be used in their local language
school sessions - just proving that our talents are
being put to good use even in foreign parts!

The double issue for Christmas seems to have come around with startling speed, a sure sign I am getting
older.
A great night was had by all who came to enjoy the John Ellis Trio. Three excellent musicians with a great
rapport with the audience.

Minutes of the Parish Council Meeting held in Blennerhasset Village Hall on Wednesday 11 November 2015
Present.Cllr s. Richar dson, Powley, Clar kson, Raine, Ms. Little. Also pr esent was Cllr . Mr s. Mounsey (A.B.C.).
A complaint had been received that the map board in Torpenhow was leaking in and the map had been damaged.
The Chairman said he had been approached by Mr. P. Turner of Baggrow & Blennerhasset Cricket Club requesting compensation
for the removal of sacks of loam. The council felt that, as the bags were left on parish council land and not in the playing field, the
council was not responsible for it. The Clerk was asked to write to the cricket club to this effect.
i) Queens Diamond Jubilee Seat. The Chairman reported that the concrete base had been cast, that the seat required some treatment
before installation. He suggested that a young man called Christian James from Torpenhow be approached and asked to apply oil to
the seat. Cllr. Raine proposed a limit of £50.00 for the treatment and this was seconded by Cllr. Powley. All were in favour.
ii) Village Signs Post Replacement. Cllr. Powley proposed that the council approaches Paul Mitchell to give a price for the installation of the posts. He said he would get a price for the poles. This was agreed.
iv)Village Maps. Correspondence had been received from Mrs. Tinniswood of Cockbridge House and replied to by the Chairman.
Since then the map board had been removed and Cllr. Powley has it in his possession. He suggested that the Cockbridge map be
abandoned on safety grounds but that it is retained. This was agreed by the council.

December 2015/January 2016
v)Map Boards. An order has been sent to Alan Norman regarding relocation of the Torpenhow map board. The map boxes at
Torpenhow, Whitrigg and Kirkland are leaking in and the maps are being damaged. The Clerk was asked to write to Mr. Alan
Norman expressing the council’s concern and requesting rectification.
vi) Playing Field. There has been no reply to our letter of 21 July 2015. The Clerk was asked to contact Miss.L.Bowe by email.
vii) Maintenance. Mr. G. Thirlwall has been contacted regarding maintenance of the War Memorial and bus shelter but he stated that
he does not wish to do either.
viii) Blennerhasset Riverside. Cllr. Clarkson reported that the school is covered by insurance for any out-of-school activities.
Cllr. Ms. Little said she had obtained the dates of the visits by the road sweeper from Allerdale B.C. and from Karl Melville of Cumbria C.C regarding gully emptying. (Min. 1706(viii) refers.)
Project Groups.
i) Aspatria Rural Partnership. Cllr. Ms. Little said she had obtained a map on which to mark the locations of drains, areas of flooding and any other highway matters. Cllr. Clarkson said he would survey the Blennerhasset portion of the parish and Cllr. Ms. Little
said she would survey the Torpenhow portion. She also reported that Local Links at Aspatria is only open on 3 days per week.
Cllr. Powley said he had seen the bridge inspector regarding Blennerhasset Bridge and that the raised river level has caused erosion
of the school wall. The inspector said the river level had not been raised and had reported that the school wall was not connected to
the bridge. Cllr. Raine suggested that the school should have the extent of the damage assessed and submit a request to the Parish
Council for some financial assistance.
. Annual Return of Audit.
The Annual Return had been received from the External Auditor and it was agreed this be accepted by the council.
. Finances. The following payments wer e appr oved: i) to Bobol Ltd. for J ubilee Seat £400.82
ii) to Torpenhow Village Hall Committee for meeting of 9 Sept. 2015 £15.00

The Chairman submitted his proposals and these were discussed. A final list of proposals was agreed and it was agreed to
submit a request for a precept of £9500 minus CTRS Grant.
. Dental Practice in Aspatria.
Cllr. Mrs. Mounsey (A.B.C.) reported that McBride & Steele intended to close their Aspatria practice and relocate to their
Maryport surgery, taking their patients there. They had no room for expansion in Aspatria and an inability to fill unattended appointments. She said Allerdale B.C. would like a response from the Parish Council. The council felt that, so long as parishioners
would be able to get convenient appointments at Maryport, it could have no objections to the proposal on business lines.
Cllr. Mrs. Mounsey would pass on the comments of the council to the scrutiny committee
. Next Meeting.

Well! What an afternoon! I don’t think any one
expected Bishop James being interviewed by Janet
Coxon for his choice of “Desert Island Discs”, to be as
funny, beautiful and moving. Janet (and Andrew)
were so professional that Margaret suggested they
both got a job with the B.B.C. Jenny de Robeck (two
of her poems were used, one funny and the other as
a prayer) said, “You could just about reach out and
touch Gods’ love and presence there”.
Bishop James was so open and honest, revealing a
lot of his life we had not known and despite some
sadness, his infectious sense of humour, especially
when he told us about his role as “Keeper of the
Closet” for the Queen! And his absolute trust and joy
in Jesus Christ, all came through.
About 40 people came, including “Travelling Light”,
who led us in joyous praise, our resident poet
laureate, and the caterers, who with grace and
willingness, “worked their socks off”! Thank you to all
who contributed to such a really wonderful event,
especially to Bishop James, such a busy man with
such important roles, but humble and willing enough
to come and share with us. PRAISE GOD!

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE NEWS
Bassenthwaite WI
Buffeting winds and driving rain; our first of the new
generation of storms with a name - Abigail - tried
hard but could not deter 23 intrepid members and
1 guest from gathering for Bassenthwaite WI’s 96th
AGM. Their reward – a tasty supper of sausage and
jacket potatoes, delicious deserts and convivial
company.
Fully replete they were ready to attend to the
formalities of the AGM. Margaret Green, our
President, welcomed everyone and thanked them for
attending on an evening of such inclement weather.
The Treasurer, Sandra Hill, reported a healthy
financial position. Secretary, Ros Downing, reflected
on a busy year the highlight of which was
September’s party for residents of Bassenthwaite to
celebrate the WI centenary and Bassenthwaite’s 95th
Anniversary. Margaret thanked members for all their
support for events over the year, especially for the
residents party and for the very successful October
coffee morning. It had been good to be supported by
so many friends at both events. The committee was
re-elected enbloc and members were encouraged to
consider joining the committee as the committee is
understrength.
Members were reminded about the Christmas wreath
making morning on December 7th 9.30am in the
Church room.
The competition “I made this myself” was well
supported and showcased the many varied talents of
members – all would have been very worthy winners,
but the winner this time was Kate Calvert with a
needle felted sculpture of her handsome Indian Runner drake ‘Thomas’. A challenging quiz to identify
abbreviations was won by Linda McMillan and Helen
Reb.
The December meeting is on Thursday 10th 7.30pm in
the Church Room. Philip Hill will be leading us in a
musical evening badged ‘ Ding Dong Merrily on High’.
The competition is ‘A Christmas cracker’

We have enjoyed a fascinating series of meetings this
year and have welcomed several new members.
We celebrated one member’s 90th birthday this
evening so our age range now spans nearly 70 years,
from 20s to 90s.
Edna Hind was re-elected president for 2016.
The first prize in the annual competition was won by
Miriam Page with Andrea Cameron second.

Miriam Page also won the evening’s competition for a
decorated fir cone with Doreen Pickering second.
The raffle was won by Dorothy Lisle.
We are now looking forward to our Christmas Party
on Wednesday 9th December, with entertainment by

Our November meeting went down well with Bryony

brought. There was a thank you card from Margaret
Lockheart for the flowers she received in October.
She hopes to be well enough to attend our December
meeting when there is to be community singing with
Voices.Com followed by nibbles and wine.
All members were asked to bring a little something.
Competition: A mince pie. Andrena won the competition: a powder compact, second Peggy Watson
(Cummersdale). Raffle – Avril, Joanne Batey,

Guest from Cummersdale and Dovenby were
welcomed. Coins for friendship was collected, a book
had been purchased – WI 100 years, was taken
home by Helen, which will be loaned to all members
interested. WI are applying for a grant towards a new
PA system. Diane Tillman/Bridget Mason to make
further enquiries. Our January meeting will be a night
out at the Castle Bar, Cockermouth. Transport to be
arranged in December.
Uldale WI
10 members attended a most enjoyable meeting in
the Bell Institute and were welcomed by the president, Elizabeth Moore. The minutes of the previous
meeting had been circulated and were approved and
signed. A list was passed round for members to sign
if they wished to go to the Christmas meal and they
were reminded of the competition which will be for a
Christmas wrist corsage. Attention was drawn to various items from the County News and Jeanne Rogers
thanked us for the card and flowers she received after
her recent spell in hospital.
After the business meeting we tried samples of recipes brought by the members and enjoyed all sorts of
food, ranging from soup and chicken dishes through
to several traybakes. These were washed down with
copious cups of tea and accompanied by good conversation.
The competition for an old cookery book was won by
Doreen Gleed with Jeanne Rogers coming second
and the drawing was won by Jacqui Spanton.

Good advice
If you have a lot of tension and you get a headache, do
what it says on the aspirin bottle: ‘Take two aspirin’ and
‘Keep away from children!’ Wise men?
I was telling my three boys the story of the Nativity and
how the Wise Men brought gifts of gold, frankincense and
myrrh for the infant Jesus.
Clearly giving it a lot of thought, my six-year-old observed, "Mum, a Wise Woman would have brought nappies."
School play

school, came home and shouted, "I got a part in the

"What part did you get?" asked his mother excitedly.
"I'm one of the three wise guys!"
