The Demand Attentive Network (DAN)
The Demand Attentive Network (DAN) An Initiative from the IET Communications Policy Panel Gavin Young C.Eng FIET www.theiet.org/dan Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 1 Demand Attentive Network (DAN): Drivers ≠ more bandwidth! Better broadband Government & EC metrics for broadband have focussed on speed Not enough emphasis on delivering the application outcomes that users need We need to focus on providing sufficient Quality of Experience consistently for all users, wherever they are It’s a challenge to deliver fibre to every premise and radio spectrum is limited Since bandwidth is not infinite, we need to explore alternative approaches Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 2 DAN Objective Transform the user experience: From “never enough” to “always sufficient” Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 3 Bandwidth is Necessary but NOT Sufficient Example of Web Page Load Time (PLT) versus Bandwidth We need more focus on latency, ‘quality’, availability …. The “Killer App” is not the speed test. Speed is meaningless without consistency! Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 13 DAN Approach Summarize technology developments that can enhance the outcomes delivered by networks in a limited bandwidth world Identify the policy issues associated with each potential enabling technology E.g. highlight barriers - factors blocking or restricting deployment Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 14 Take-Away Its not all about bandwidth Its about application outcomes! Think about latency, reliability & consistency Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 15 DAN Progress Extensive education (& lobbying) engagements: Government, EC, regulators, standards bodies, vendors, operators … The dawn of realisation - Bandwidth is necessary but not sufficient The University of Surrey 5G IC core vision perfectly encapsulates DAN ETSI (with BSI leadership) has set up an ISG (Industrial Specification Group) on Next Generation Protocols A key DAN building block of a future smarter better broadband Internet Regulators have started talking about application outcomes – Hooray! Many others now “get it” See www.theiet.org/dan to download the DAN paper Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 16 Thank You! Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 17 Back-Up Slides Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 18 DAN Definition A DAN is a network that is cognisant of and responsive to the demands that users and applications are placing on it. It then seeks to optimise the use of network resources including smart terminal devices in order to provide the outcomes that are required to satisfy the users and applications needs. In doing so it seeks to deliver the appropriate Quality of Experience (QoE) for the population of network users such that they perceive the network performance as “always sufficient” and hence responsive to their needs. A DAN is not a single technology, protocol or network design concept. It is an architectural, regulatory and policy approach to leveraging emerging technologies in an effective way to deliver outcomes that meet the demands of users. Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 19 The Demand Attentive Network (DAN) What might it look like? More user-aware More a wireless-fibre convergent network that increases cooperation across different network providers More virtualized More adaptive More energy-efficient (through reducing unnecessary traffic) An evolving but ultimately profoundly smarter network Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 20 This Doesn’t Mean We Stop Addressing Access Bottlenecks! Evolving from copper to fibre reduces distance dependency and improves latency and stability Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 21 Root Cause of UK Network Outages (Fixed & Mobile, 2012) Source: Ofcom/Operators Network availability is of increasing importance as we move more to Cloud-based services Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 22 Bandwidth is an Increasingly Inadequate Proxy for Quality DAN is not about chasing bandwidth It is about delivering the benefits which those who do chase bandwidth are after, but without chasing bandwidth, affordably and probably more quickly. Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 23 Anticipating User Demand to Fill Spare Night Time Capacity “Typical” Internet 24 hour traffic volume statistics Internet data surge from release of iOS 7 on Wed 18 Sep 2013 How do we get the industry cooperation across the silos? Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians Demand Attentive Networks (DAN) In order to give users “the perception” that they are connected to networks of unlimited bandwidth requires: Being very attentive to the demands users and applications are placing on a network Breaking down the silos: fixed & mobile (& perhaps broadcasting); industry & regulators; handsets & networks and pull together all the ideas that can respond to this demand at lower cost If resources are continuously optimised to deliver a performance that is “always sufficient” - users will perceive that they are connected to a network of unlimited bandwidth. Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians 25 Summary of the key DAN propositions The IET wants to replace “pillar to post” thinking on public networks...with 3 new ideas: A vision of continuously upgraded fibre-wireless “network growth engines” A global ambition to create the perception of unlimited bandwidth in an untethered fibre-wireless world Breaking down silos to bring the best ideas together to create this perception by more Demand Attentive Networks (…delivering to users a Quality of Experience that is “always sufficient”) The IET believes these ideas can transform the performance/investment cost road map and create new industry opportunities to the 1st movers who deliver on the ideas Professional Home for Life ® for Engineers and Technicians
