It’s All in the Preparation
Quite often parents and grandparents ask me about how best
to prepare for a Passover Seder. I know the p’shat (the simple
meaning) of the question: What texts to use that night? How
long before we eat? Can we use juice instead of wine? And the
list goes on.These are all important questions, as the story should
be told in a way that those sitting around the table feel they

A Jewish Perspective"

Rabbi Shelley Waldenberg is Rabbi Emeritus of Temple
Isaiah, where he served for 19 years as our rabbi. Since his
retirement in 1991, he has been teaching Jewish Studies at
Holy Names University, lecturing at universities, churches and
synagogues, and serving as Principal Educator of the
American Jewish Committee’s Catholic-Jewish
Educational Enrichment Program.
are engaged, can participate fully, and are
encouraged to study the deeper meaning
of the tale. There needs to be an adult level
of conversation around the table, even if
the children get a bit impatient; and there
needs to be a child’s level of conversation
that will engage them without turning the
exercise into an empty, silly one.
But there is much more. How to best
prepare not only has to do with the evening of the Seder itself but the days before
as the Festival approaches. The traditional
calendar has four special Shabbat Torah

readings that get us ready, from Shabbat
Graetz
Shekalim, which reminded the Israelites
that it was tax season in Biblical times (not too far apart from
April 15!) to Shabbat Hagadol, the Sabbath prior to Passover,
when it was publicly announced that the Festival was about to
begin and people better be ready. They all spoke of the urgency
of the task. Spring cleaning, ridding the house of chametz (all
breads and yeasted products) and then on the night before the
seder, the wonderful quaint ritual of hunting for chametz.
You want to get little children excited about the holiday? Get
ready to introduce the “Yeast hunt” on the night before Passover.
The custom was to hide ten pieces of bread throughout the
house and then, with candles (or flashlights, which are safer)
the entire family goes searching for the pieces of chametz. The
crumbs are scooped up with a feather and brought to a place in
the yard where, the next morning (the day of the Seder), they
would be burned in a safe place. At that time there were prayers
recited indicating that if, inadvertently, any other chametz was
found in the house, it was considered not as your property and
the household was free from fault.
In our day, as we get rid of chametz, we might ask ourselves
“what puffs you up?” that is, where is it that there is so much of
me that there is no space for the other; what do I need to get rid
of in myself to let someone feel free?
By the time you read this column, we will be well into the days
leading up to Passover. Clean house, (Continued on page 2)

give tzedakah*, burn the chametz – both
the one in bread and the one in spirit – and
get creative to tell the story of our redemption. Not only does the story need to be told,
but redemption for many is still waiting.
Through your efforts, let this be a year of less
hunger and more freedom for those who suffer in the world.
*It is during these weeks that we invite
you to make a special gift to MAZON, a
Jewish Response to Hunger, so that we may
bring food to the tables of those in need, and
work together that a day may come when
hunger will no longer be felt among us.

NEWS AND INSPIRATION
The Beauty and Power of Shabbat
As Reform Jews, what does Shabbat mean to you and your family?
Is it merely the seventh day after six days of Creation when God
rested, or a day of rest from work? Is it a retreat from the everyday
world and daily routine, or another day in the week to accomplish
what could not be done in the other six days due to the enormous
pressure and demands of work and family commitments?
For many of us, it is some or all of the above. The irony of our
modern lives is that the fuller and richer they appear to become
and the less time we think we have to celebrate (or observe)
Shabbat, the more we actually need Shabbat to fully enjoy and
cherish our lives, the lives of our families and friends, and the
beauty of God’s creation. And yet we rarely take the time to have
a weekly “time out” to refresh ourselves for the other busy six
days of the week that demand so much from us.
Shabbat is truly a gift from God and not just a Commandment.
How good might it feel to turn off the electronics for 24 hours or
at least for Friday night; to celebrate a meal with candles, challah,
and wine with our family and closest friends; to attend services
and hear a little bit of Torah; to slow the pace for a morning or
afternoon; or perhaps take a restful Saturday afternoon nap (one
of my favorites)?
There are many ways to celebrate and
observe Shabbat. Yet each of us needs to
find our way. It is vitally important for our
physical, mental, and emotional health to
actually do it, without even going into the
spiritual aspects of connecting with God,
Torah, the Commandments, and Creation.
We are planning a wonderful evening
Friday, March 15, to not only celebrate
Shabbat together as community, but to
learn more about the transformative power
of Shabbat observance and to share how
we might achieve the benefits of the life
sustaining gift of Shabbat. Please plan to
join us for worship, dinner, and a conversation. I promise that you will leave with
some new perspectives on the beauty and
power of Shabbat.

Isaiah Welcomes San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band
When I was in high school and college,
people often asked if I was thinking about
being a cantor. My stock answer was that
I didn’t want to be in a musical career
where I was locked in to only making
Jewish music. It goes without saying that I
eventually came around, but I always kept
in the back of my head the thought that
I wanted to keep up my musical “chops”
outside of the amazing and rich world of
Jewish music. I am lucky that I found an
enriching way to do that (and I get to play
my bassoon, to boot!).
Cantor Leigh Korn
For the past several years, I have had
the good fortune of playing with the San Francisco Lesbian/
Gay Freedom Band. The band was founded in 1978, and, upon
its founding, became the first openly gay musical group in the
world. In addition to providing education and musical development for its members, the SFLGFB’s mission is to promote
visibility of the LGBT community and to build understanding

Annual Jewish Film Festival
Temple Isaiah is sponsoring the Israeli film Yossi at this year’s
East Bay Jewish Film Festival, to be screened on Tuesday, March
12, at 5:15 p.m. at CineArts, Pleasant Hill. The character, Yossi
Hoffman, is a cardiologist who hides loneliness by spending long
hours at work. As a gay man still closeted, he parries requests for
dates with female colleagues. While driving to Eilat on vacation,
he picks up several hitchhiking soldiers. One of them is a selfconfident gay man, who represents a different world from that
which shaped Yossi. Cost: $10. For more info and to order tickets,

between and among LGBT and other communities, all through
music. I am so proud to be a part of this musical community and
to share rehearsals each week with perhaps the friendliest and
most supportive group of musicians with whom I have ever had
the privilege of playing.
I am so excited to welcome the band to Temple Isaiah to present their first concert of 2013, on Sunday, March 17, at 4 p.m. in
the Sanctuary. Under the direction of Martin Seggelke, the band
will be performing Dutch composer Johan de Meij’s Symphony
No. 1, inspired by the Lord of the Rings novels. It is a moving
and epic work, and I’m certain you will be entertained by the
band’s performance. (After all, your cantor is performing!) The
concert is free and I hope we can fill the Sanctuary and support
this group of which I am so proud to be a part and, in turn, support their mission of education, understanding, acceptance, and
equality.

March for Books
ViA Isaiah is sponsoring
a month-long book drive in
March for the Jewish Coalition
for Literacy. Books should be
new or gently used (no scribbles or tears), geared toward
K-3rd grade (ages 5-9, no baby,
teen or adult) and of universal appeal (no religion, health or
hygiene). Please put your ‘values in action’ and deposit donations
in the specially marked crates at the Gan Ilan pre-school office,
Temple office or Sanctuary lobby. Questions? Contact Dick and
Barbara Lemyre at [email protected].
Dinner and Community
Conversations with Kesher Isaiah
Kesher Isaiah and Women of Isaiah invite you to a delicious
family-style dinner and an evening of community conversations
following the 6:30 p.m. Shabbat service on Friday, March 15.
Building on the conversations we began at the Neighborhood
Havdalah gatherings last October, the focus of our evening will
be to reflect as a community on the meaning of Shabbat in our
lives. We’ll share a community-wide Shabbat dinner together and
then break into groups to have conversations that take a deeper
look at how we can manage to create a time and space to bring
Shabbat back into our busy and often over-scheduled lives.
Don’t miss this opportunity to come together as family and
community to renew our spirits and find ways to observe and
appreciate the blessing of Shabbat in our lives. RSVP for the free
dinner on March 15 at www.temple-isaiah.org/groups-activities/
community-dinner/.

Shelter Dinners – March 11-15
Welcome New Members
The Mt. View Shelter provides help to those in need, including a
variety of services such as transitional resources for the homeless. In these tough times, shelters are in need of our donations and
help more than ever. Various members of the Interfaith Council
of Contra Costa take turns in providing meals and Temple Isaiah’s
turn is from March 11-15.
For the five nights Temple Isaiah will be providing healthy and
well-balanced meals, we will need eight to ten cooks each night,
plus three to four servers at the Mt. View Shelter in Martinez.
Prior to that, we also need a few volunteers to shop for supplies.

Theater and Spirituality Workshop
with Jodi Schiller
Come join us as we experience how dramatic enactments can
help us connect to our spiritual selves in an exciting workshop
led by Temple Isaiah member Jodi Schiller on Sunday, March
10, at 4 p.m. in the Beit Knesset. Jodi has a master’s degree
in psychology with a concentration in drama therapy and is a
professional theater director and playwright. We will use drama
games, and improvisation to explore questions inspired by the
Book of Job and perhaps by our own lives. Everyone is welcome,
and no dramatic experience is necessary. No need to worry
about stage fright; this workshop will be different, meaningful,
and fun. Refreshments will be served. RSVP by March 8 to Karen

ANSHEI ISAIAH
Raising the Bar at Annual Trivia Night
Move over, Alex Trebeck and Jeopardy! Anshei Isaiah and peerless
Master of Ceremonies Scott Danish raised the trivia bar to sweet new
heights at our sixth annual Trivia Night on January 26. As a good
time, and as a fundraiser for the Anshei Isaiah Youth Fund, it was
a big success. Over 90 people attended, and they all had to dig
deep for answers during four rounds of intense, mind-bending
questions. Some supremely decadent desserts and a few light
snacks kept the brainpower charged throughout the evening.
Most importantly, we raised more money than ever before to
help fund our Temple Youth programs.
Trivia Night has fast become one of our most popular activities. Very special thanks to Jon Kalan and his team for organizing
the event this year, and to Scott Danish for conjuring up so many
terrific questions, and for pacing the evening to perfection. Many
of us are already putting teams together for next year’s Trivia
Night.
Anshei Isaiah’s next event will be a Comedy Night at Tommy
T’s, in Pleasanton, on Saturday, March 23. Bring your spouses to
enjoy a nice dinner and some great humor. April 12-14: Men’s

prophets and look into the future. A little text will ground us, and
our imagination will propel us to what we hope will be inspiring discussions. This class, taught by Rabbi Graetz, will be held
Sundays, March 3, 10, 17, at 11:15a.m. in the Oneg Room.
