ANNUAL REPORT 2014
2
014 was a year of new
collaborations and renewed
partnerships at Sarah Heinz
House. Numerous corporations,
universities,
foundations,
community organizations and
individuals provided professional
expertise, volunteered their time
and offered support. These integral
connections helped us to increase
opportunities and reach more kids
in our afterschool and summer
programs. In 2014, we served more than 3,000 area youth, ages PreK18, through our programs and community initiatives, averaging 322 kids
each day from 90 different schools.
basic nutrition lessons. In 2014, we provided more than 37,000 free
meals and snacks to our members and reached additional kids by
holding health fairs and family focused events. Last year, we hosted
the American Heart Associate’s “Healthy Family Training Camp” which
was attended by more than 350 kids and parents from low-income
neighborhoods. We also began a new fitness program in partnership with
the University of Pittsburgh Health and Physical Education Department
to introduce kids to conditioning and strength-training exercises.
Our Learning Garden brought these healthy eating concepts to life.
Through a collaboration with Penn State Co-Operative Gardeners, kids
learned about organic gardening and worked with volunteers in our
senior citizen fitness program. Last year, we added a pumpkin patch
and celebrated a fall festival with our members and their families. Teens
in our Leadership Development/Keystone Club contributed a combined
5,000 hours of community service and served as mentors, program
assistants and camp counselors. One of our members was named to the
national 2014 BGCA Teen Advisory Council.
It was also a year of innovation, creativity and success in our STEAMbased initiatives (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).
Our Robotics Program continued to bring state-of-the-art technology
to kids through our partnerships with the Robotics Institute and local
corporations. Our Robotics Team SHARP placed first in the Pittsburgh
Regional Competition earning a spot in a competition in St. Louis
where they competed with other teams from around the globe. We also
hosted robotics tournaments for area schools and added classes for
preschoolers to introduce young kids to the basics of robot commands
through fun play.
Our Summer Camp introduced a new program, “Leave No Trace,”
through the Center for Outdoor Ethics to teach environmental awareness
and responsible camping. And, we continued to be an important
community resource through our Adult Fitness by providing gym
memberships and senior fitness classes to hundreds of area residents
In 2014, our Design Factory was honored by the Boys and Girls Club
of America (BGCA) for innovation in afterschool programming. The
hands-on curriculum, developed with Carnegie Mellon University and
the University of Pittsburgh, introduced students to sustainable design,
construction principles and technology-related careers. As one of their
projects, students helped finalize the design of a bathroom and shower
facility at Heinz House camp. Our Media Lab offered a creative outlet for
kids to express themselves and learn online publishing, video production
and photography techniques and our Education Nation program
integrated super hero themes to keep kids engaged in academic goals.
Nearly 100% of our members graduated to the next level on time and
90% of our high school graduates enrolled in post-secondary education.
Through all of these partnerships, we are
able to bring innovative and affordable
programs to area kids. We thank our
community supporters for making this
possible and look forward to building new
bridges of opportunities on behalf of the kids
of Sarah Heinz House so they can dream
big, discover their talents and succeed.
We expanded our health and fitness programs to offer a wide range
of physical and educational activities. Our Healthy Choices for Life
program promoted healthy eating habits and active lifestyles through
In 2014, we began an exciting collaboration with Manchester Academic
Charter School (MACS) to provide temporary classroom space for its
middle school until construction of a new school building is complete.
Sincerely,
