Nomenclature & Clematis Groups
The clematis in this catalogue are listed in alphabetical order; some are in groups as
explained below.
To be botanically correct, clematis should be listed under their cultivar name, however we feel it is easier
to group certain types of clematis together. For example 'Helsingborg' can be found listed in the Atragene
Group; 'Madame Julia Correvon' in the Viticella Group; 'Duchess of Albany' in the Texensis Group, etc.
We now group the spring flowering cultivars together, thus the alpinas, koreanas and macropetalas appear
under their 'family' heading 'Atragene Group'. If you are selecting a clematis for spring interest in the
garden, it is much easier to have all those 'types' listed together, rather than having to search the entire
catalogue.
You will also find other types of clematis brought together into groups with a brief description of their
growth, habit and cultural requirements .
Descriptions
The details of the colour, flowering months and heights, etc. given in this catalogue are purely a guide.
Actual results will vary depending on position, soil type, feeding and geographic location of where you are
growing the plant. In addition to these physical influences on plant behaviour, please bear in mind that we
all have different perceptions of colour, and even those who see a colour in the same way may describe it in
different terms. All photographs in this catalogue are provided as a guide only.
Aspect
Indicates what position the cultivar prefers i.e. full sun, partial shade, shade or any. The majority of
clematis will flower better in a sunny, or partially shaded aspect but please note that the scented cultivars
have a better perfume if grown in a sunny position.
Pruning
There are three pruning groups - Tidy, Light & Hard. These pruning techniques are explained in our
'Clematis Care Guide', a copy of which is provided when a clematis is purchased from us.
For some cultivars the pruning can be either Light or Hard. Hard pruning will delay the flowering period by
approximately six to eight weeks, but will keep the plant more compact, and the pruning is easier! For
example 'Allanah' :If lightly pruned will grow 10' - 12' in height and bloom June to September.
If hard pruned will grow 6' - 8' and flower August to November.
Growing In Pots
All clematis could be grown in pots providing the container is large enough, and adequate drainage is
provided. The larger the clematis, the larger the pot needs to be! Growing clematis in containers can be
useful for positions where ground planting is unsuitable. In the catalogue you will find those clematis that
we recommend for best performance in a pot indicated with the appropriate symbol (please see key).

Atragene Group
This includes the alpinas, koreanas, macropetalas and their hybrids,
i.e. spring flowering cultivars with nodding bell -like flowers. They are all very hardy, but require a free draining situation.
They do not need the 'rich' growing conditions or deep planting that the large flowered cultivars prefer.
If required, prune immediately after main flowering.

Cirrhosa Group
These winter flowering clematis produce masses of nodding bell -like flowers. Whilst the foliage is classed as EVERGREEN and look s at its best in
autumn, winter and spring, they do however have a natural dormant period in summer, when the leaves can sometimes go brown.
The cirrhosas require a sunny, free draining situation that is sheltered from the worst of the cold winds.
If required, prune immediately after flowering.

Diversifolia Group
These herbaceous cultivars are clump-forming scramblers, or semi-climbers, derived directly, or indirectly from the integrifolia species.
In general, they have non-clinging stems and they can be allowed to scramble in herbaceous borders.
Alternatively, they can be used to clamber through open shrubs, small trees, rambler and shrub roses, or obelisks.
They are all hardy, very free flowering, trouble-free clematis and are highly recommended.
All the clematis in this group are suitable to use as cut flowers.

Flammula Group
This lovely group of scented clematis can make useful additions to our gardens. They produce literally hundreds of star -like flowers,
which have a hawthorn-like perfume, attracting bees and butterflies to the garden.
Whilst these can be grown in any aspect, they will flower better, and the perfume will be stronger if grown in a sunny, free draining position.
To look their best, the non-climbing stems of 'Aromatica', mandschurica & 'Pamela' require support to hold them erect.

Florida Group
The cultivars in this group are all very free flowering and make excellent specimen plants for the patio or conservatory. The y are more
reliable when grown in pots and moved into cold glasshouse conditions to over -winter - and there they will remain semi-evergreen
and may continue to flower until pruning becomes necessary in late winter - well worth the extra care!
If planted in the garden they need sheltered, free draining conditions and winter protection.
Also see C ASSIS ™, P ISTACHIO ™ & V IENNETTA ™ in the Raymond Evison Collection.

Forsteri Group
These clematis originate from species native to New Zealand. They have attractive evergreen foliage. Although not always hard y in Britain, they are
well suited to growing in pots using free draining compost and may prefer the winter protection of a cold glasshouse or conse rvatory.
However, given ideal conditions of a sheltered site and free draining soil, they can survive winters outdoors in the south of the British Isles.
'Lunar Lass' and 'Early Sensation' produce amazing seed -heads when grown alongside 'Joe'.
These clematis are dioecious (producing male or female flowers).

The clematis in this group are extremely useful in the garden, providing colour and interest from mid -summer through to late autumn,
with most producing excellent seedheads for added interest in the winter months.
They cope happily with poorer growing conditions and are drought tolerant.

Texensis Group
The hybrids of this much sought after group have 'trumpet' shaped blooms and are all excellent plants which deserve space in anyone's garden.
Used as climbers, they all prefer a situation that is sunny yet not too windy. Alternatively they can be allowed to scramble over and through other
plants. Consistent watering in summer whilst ensuring free drainage will reduce the risk of attack by powdery mildew to which they can be prone.
At the first signs of infection take appropriate action, such as applying a fungicide spray after sundown.

Viticella Group
Included in this group are those clematis commonly thought of as viticellas, or viticella crosses. However we have taken the liberty to include some
other cultivars, because their growth, habit and appearance is so similar to that of the viticellas. They include 'B ł kitny Anioł', 'Polish Spirit' and
'Prince Charles'. For ease of selection we feel justified in placing them within this 'very loose group'.
They are all extremely hardy, very free flowering, their pruning is simple and they cannot be recommended highly enough. Espe cially useful for
people new to growing clematis as they are extremely tolerant of what the gardener does to them!

Pruning demonstrations are held at the nursery
every February. We have found these talks to be
very popular with our customers. Each session will
last approximately two hours and, in part, will be
outside in the garden. Afterwards we will be pleased
to give you a warming cup of tea, coffee or hot soup
and a choice of biscuits.
Booking is recommended, as we have set a maximum
number for each demonstration. Extra sessions can
be booked for large groups.
There is a charge of £10.00 per person if you wish to
pay on the day. Pay in advance (at least 7 days before the event) and only pay £5.00 per person.
The 2014 dates are Friday 7th , Saturday 8th and
Saturday 15th of February.
In addition to the extensive range of clematis, the nursery now stocks a selection of
composts and sundries. There is also a new plant centre stocking a range of herbaceous
perennials and shrubs.
