Dear Library Patrons,
Every day, the Library is humming with activity. Art exhibits,
book discussions, computer classes, storytimes and more
are on the calendar. Many ideas for displays, classes, exhibits
and programs come from people in our community.
The Library’s chess, stitching and mahjongg groups, Monday
Afternoon Movies, Second Friday film series, preschool
fair, outdoor concerts, language classes, book discussion
groups are some of the many activities and programs that
originated as suggestions from our patrons. Likewise, our
teen activities- including Book Hipsters, Teen Book Review
Club, Just Dance parties, themed lock-ins, Open Mic night
- are inspired by young adults in our Teen Advisory Group.
While we do conduct an annual survey soliciting your ideas
and comments, we welcome your suggestions throughout
the year. Hardly a day passes without someone stopping by
with an idea or an exhibit or activity they would like to see
us offer. Do you have an idea for a program, or a special
expertise you could share with others? Email me or call me

7th Annual AWPL Foundation Scholarship
Competition
For the seventh consecutive year, the Albert Wisner Public
Library Foundation is offering college scholarships to be
awarded in a writing competition. Applicants will submit an
essay, not to exceed 2,000 words in length, on the following
topic: “How we can reduce Warwick’s dependence on polluting
fossil fuels in favor of clean energy.” Essays are due April 14.
Three scholarships will be awarded in May by Glenn P. Dickes
and Susan D. Dickes, who have sponsored two scholarships
since the competition’s inception in 2007, and by C. Hope
Arber, who added a third award in 2012. The Foundation and
Library deeply appreciate their generosity. For details vist www.

I moved to Warwick from Chester
just in time for my daughters to
start school. I discovered Warwick
while living in Chester and was
determined to live here. That
was 39 years ago. I have been a
Library Trustee for most of those
years, working on the addition to the original Albert
Wisner Public Library, and more recently, assisting in the
planning and building of our new library.
I believe the public library should be the center of
activity in the community. It should be a learning center
for all ages, preschoolers to retirees, a place where they
can expand their world. Currently the Library offers a
great variety of classes and programs for all ages but I
believe there is room for growth with perhaps college
level classes for the community, parenting and nutrition
classes and additional cultural events.
The greatest asset that I bring to the Board is my years of
experience. From budgeting to personnel to maintaince
of the building, over the years I have served on all the
standing committees. I have learned that overseeing
the management of the Library is like helping to run a
small corporation.

The proposed FY 2013-2014 budget reflects the Library Board’s continued commitment to
maintain support for our library and its popular programs and services, while managing
cost increases for our community. Consistent and growing support from the Friends of
the Library and the AWPL Foundation allow us to hold the levy increase to 2% for the
second year while, maintaining the robust schedule of programs, services, collections and
hours that resulted in record-breaking increases in attendance, visits and circulation of
library material again in 2012!
For FY 2013-2014 the Library Board proposes to increase the library tax rate from $2.94
to $2.98/$1,000 of assessed value for Warwick property owners, and from $0.68 to
$0.69/$1,000 for Chester property owners in our Library district. While rates are estimated,
the average increase would be $2.00 -$3.00 a year.

World Book Night
On World Book Night - April 23, 2013 - Friends of the Albert Wisner Library will once again be
“Spreading the Love of Reading Person to Person.” Our library has been selected to be a host
pick-up location for over 15 book giver volunteers. Books to be given away will range from
humor to classics, to mystery to Spanish language. Look for book giver volunteers at various
locations throughout Warwick on April 23rd.

Poetry Month, poet Mary Makofske will read her
13-part poem “An Inward Bruise” accompanied
by whale song, music and photos of these
magnificent mammals.
Whales and dolphins (cetaceans) have been
hunted, feared, mythologized, misunderstood, studied, admired, and loved. How are they part
of our world? What do we know about them? What do they know about us?
“An Inward Bruise” won the Lullwater Review Poetry Prize and appears in Traction (Ashland
Poetry Press), Makofske’s latest book and winner of the Richard Snyder Prize.
