They develop the use of the mind to move energy, and that energy then moves the physical body. Ordinary forms of exercise don’t develop this natural living energy because they simply reinforce the mind moving the physical body directly. This is an important difference because this energy, Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the life force that makes all living things different from inanimate objects. It nourishes us, heals our injuries and illnesses and helps us feel vital and alive. 杨式太极拳 Yang Style Tai Ji Quan Yang Style Tai Ji is a gentle exercise that is done slowly so that you can relax the body deeply and focus on developing the Qi energy in movement, and actually put it to work. second level extends the power of intention out into the space around you. It has energy like the waves of the ocean. The third form is the most sophisticated and moves energy in spirals like whirlpools. This form was developed by Dr. Wang’s teacher, Wang Zhuang Hong. People are calling it, “Wang Style Water Nature Tai Ji Quan”. 心意六合拳 Xin Yi Liu He Quan (Heart-Mind Six Harmony Boxing) Xin Yi is one of the oldest Internal Martial arts. It looks simple, but requires precise alignments of the body to achieve a deep level of relaxation. It is built upon single movements that are practiced in place first, and then walking in a line. Finally these building blocks are put together into small groups, and then into longer forms. Ultimately the Xin Yi player can weave any of the single moves into a spontaneous form of their own design. 推手 Push Hands Dr. Wang, my Tai Ji teacher in Shanghai, has organized the system of self development that Tai Ji offers into three levels. Each level of practice has a different version of the Yang Style form to go with it. Push hands is a non-competitive two person exercise that helps to bring the principles of the Internal Martial Arts to life by putting them into practice. The first level builds a strong foundation of good habits. It emphasizes the smooth flow of energy like water flowing in a river. The For example: one important principle is to use intention and energy rather than physical force. This way push hands becomes an energy exercise rather than just a shoving match. Another principle is to neither collapse under pressure from your partner, nor butt heads with them. When you apply this principle well you find a way to transcend the “fightflight response” and this can even reduce stress in your daily life. Lineages I have been studying and practicing Tai Ji Quan since 1981. In 1992 I began studying Chen Style Tai Ji Quan and Xin Yi Liu He Quan with George Xu. His power and depth of knowledge surpassed any teacher I had known before him. In 2003 Master Xu gave me a personal introduction to Dr. Wang on a six week trip to Shanghai, China. Dr. Wang is a doctor of Chinese Medicine as well as a Tai Ji master. Master Xu called Dr. Wang “the best teacher” for Tai Ji theory and for push hands. The depth of Dr. Wang’s knowledge of Tai Ji theory and his ability to demonstrate and explain it are truly incredible. Later I met Master Qian (through George Xu again). Master Xu called Master Qian “the best fighter in Shanghai.” His level of skill is amazing. In 2004 I moved to Shanghai for 3 ½ years to study with both Dr. Wang and Master Qian Zhao Hong. I also learned Chinese and became a translator for them when needed.
