2014 Annual Report
2014 Annual Report MY TRUTH IS I’m finally graduating In 1970, Hildegard Messenbaugh, MD - a noted Denver psychiatrist - was approached by concerned members of the community about the growing number of adolescents living on the streets. Many of these young people fled turbulent & traumatic family situations, had trouble with the law, or had recently left other institutional settings. With her guidance & the support of the Denver community, an alternative to homelessness & incarceration for troubled youth was created. Today, Third Way Center provides traumatized teens with Truth in the form of an accurate diagnosis, as well as Hope through individual, family and group therapy, education, vocational training, parenting skills training, after care emancipation programs, and much more. With 44 years in the Denver Metro area, Third Way Center continues its mission to offer truth & hope to high risk, mentally ill, disadvantaged & often homeless adolescents & their families. “Together, we empower them to build better lives for themselves as productive adults.” William Matthews, President, Third Way Center Board of Directors Dear Friends, Last year was a busy and exciting one at Third Way Center! In 2014: We served 254 teens total - more individuals than in any previous year. Third Way Center strengthened its reputation as a resource not just for Colorado, but for the entire Rocky Mountain region. Young people referred to our program came from several surrounding states including California, Idaho, North Dakota and Wyoming. Still, our focus remains on Colorado teens. In 2014, 91% of those served in 2014 were from our own state. We opened our fourth and final house on the staff secure Lowry campus, bringing the total of residential beds to 32 at that one location. 2015 is shaping up to be just as exciting and perhaps more so. In July of this year, Hildegard Messenbaugh, M.D., published her first book, a training manual that explains the successful treatment methodology used at Third Way Center titled: Getting Even: A Manual for Healing Childhood Trauma.. This publication brings together the vast knowledge she has gained from her nearly 50 years as a psychiatrist. As a resource for therapists in Colorado and beyond, this manual helps Third Way Center to expand the impact of our treatment methodology beyond our treatment homes, helping teens and people of all ages to overcome their trauma. Everything we do depends on your generosity and the investment you make in the success of our teens. Together, we empower them to build better lives for themselves as productive adults. We are grateful for your kindness, your support, your interest in our work and your commitment to helping traumatized teens. All the best, William Matthews, President, Third Way Center Board of Directors Aaron’s Journey After his 13-year old biological mother lost custody of him, Aaron was placed in the care of a foster parent struggling with an addiction problem. Making matters worse, Aaron lived in a neighborhood overrun with gang violence, and spent most of his time between ages 12-17 living on the streets or in group homes. Aaron Today Due to Third Way Center’s Continuum of Care Aaron was given hope for a different path. Today, he is a successful senior grants writer for FEMA. To be fair, his parents had trauma of their own. His father was a Vietnam veteran suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, while his mother struggled with mental illness. Their personal demons made it impossible provide the safe, stable home Brendan both needed and deserved. With no direction, no stability and no hope for something better, Brendan was left to make his own self-destructive choices. He turned to planning and committing crime, soon finding himself incarcerated and surrounded by teens with similar stories. He believed, like so many before him, being locked-up was a more stable environment than his own home. Sadly, Brendan found freedom from abuse inside the criminal justice system. Thankfully, however, Brendan was referred to Third Way Center, where he was given the tools to understand the truth about the trauma he suffered through and provided hope for a brighter future. Upon successfully leaving Third Way Center he joined the US Army where served multiple tours in Iraq and Kuwait. Today, Brendan is a successful realtor and businessowner. He is also an avid supporter of Third Way Center, where is a powerful advocate in the community for our mission to offer truth and hope to high risk, mentally ill, disadvantaged and often homeless adolescents, and their families. In 2014, True Grit attendees were introduced to Brendan. There he detailed his experiences at our agency as well as his remarkable journey. 2014 Client Snapshot 1/2 LIVE WITH PTSD AND HAVE BEEN IN 7 OR MORE PLACEMENTS Total Clients Served 254 Teens & 7 Babies Female male White African Am. 75% Of Clients Reported Abuse/Neglect Prior To Entering Third Way Center. 12% Native Am. 6% Asian Am. 39% 61% 1% Mixed Race 4% 30% Hispanic Heritage (Mexican American, Latino/a, Hispanic, Spanish) 59% Sexual Abuse 61% Physical Abuse 58% Verbal Abuse 73% Neglect 73% Multiple Victimizations Where Our Clients Are From 91% Colorado 24 Different Colorado Counties 9% Idaho, North Dakota, & Wyoming Mountain Ute Tribe Southern Ute Tribe Percentage of clients entering Third Way Center from a household below the federal poverty line. 2014 treatment Accomplishments Therapy Sessions 11,264 11,264 2,251 2,251 1,301 1,301 Individual family Group Average Length of Stay 80% 14% Received a High School Diploma or GED higher than the avg. graduation rate for similar populations in Colorado Over 1/2 of Clients With A High School Diploma or GED Attended College Or Technical School Success Rate 94 Clients Benefited From Internships & Employment Opportunities successfully living on their own or reunited with family Third Way center’s Lowry Campus A Comprehensive Program 7-Years in the Making Lowry campus timeline 2007 Hope House 2009 Sprout House 2010 Larrk House & JFA lowry “We are so grateful for the community support with this endeavor. Thanks to HomeAid, John Laing Homes, Colorado Health Foundation, the McCormick family and many other generous donors, we will finally be able to have a state-of-the-art assessment and diagnostic center for youth that would normally be hospitalized or homeless. We’re eternally grateful to all our generous donors who helped in our 7-year dream of constructing a continuum of services located in the heart of Lowry. At its inception, Lowry Campus humbly treated 8 youth, but today it has grown into a comprehensive campus capable of treating and educating 32 youth at any given time . In April 2014, Third Way Center realized the culmination of this dream when it opened Maes, the fourth and final house on the Lowry campus, as well as added the new Sprout Training Center. The road to completing Lowry Campus was a long and rewarding journey. Though the facility is completed, the work continues, as Third Way Center staff transforms the lives of youth on their pathway towards hope for a better tomorrow. 2012 The Gym Lowry Leadership Treatment Leader: Dana Freisinger Assistant Treatment Leader: Candace Farrell EducationalCoordinator at Joan Farley Academy Lowry: Monica Snyder 2014 Maes house & sprout training center Dear 2014 volunteers, ADOPT-A HOUSE: Give support year round Your hard-work and dedication in 2014 was essential to the success of our teens.
