May 6 Book Review Luncheon
Carile Brown award presented to Rick Mason
by Library Director, Barbara McGary.
Dr. Susan Ross will review
Citizen Canine: Our Evolving Relationship
with Cats and Dogs, by David Grimm,
at the May 6 Book Review Luncheon
sponsored by the Friends of the James
V. Brown Library.
Cats and dogs have evolved
from wild animals to pets that have
more rights and protections than
any other animal in the country.
Citizen Canine is well-written and
researched, exploring both sides of a
current trend as these pets approach
“personhood.” Chapters focus on
animal cruelty, military dogs, animal
law attorneys, and abandoned pets
during Hurricane Katrina
Grimm is deputy editor at
Science, the world’s leading journal of
science news and scientific research.
Ross is a professor in the department
of sociolog y-anthropolog y at
Lycoming College and winner of
several teaching awards. She has coauthored the book, Deployed: How
Reservists Bear the Burden of Iraq,
as well as numerous articles. Her
first year seminar called People and
Pups: An Introduction to Animals and
Society uses Citizen Canine as one of
the readings for the class.
Volunteer of the Year Award presented to
David E. Wright by the Friends of the Library
Board President, Greg Thomas.

Library Volunteers Honored
On April 11, volunteers who work in library programs and those
who support the work of the Friends of the James V. Brown Library were
celebrated at a festive event held in the Lowry Room.
Gloria Greevy, vice-president of the library board of trustees,
and Allison Savage,Volunteer Coordinator, remarked on the value of the
many hard-working volunteers both inside the library and out in the
county. The Friends organization is the fundraising arm of the volunteer
movement that supports library programs and acquisitions with financial
grants.
Greg Thomas, President of the Board of the Friends, presented
the Volunteer of the Year Award to David E. Wright, the Treasurer of
the Friends board of directors, who carefully guards the treasuries of
both the Friends and the bookstore. He also keeps the store staffed with
volunteers.
Barbara McGary, executive director of the library, presented the
Carile Brown Award, named for the wife of the library’s founder, to Rick
Mason. Rick has worked tirelessly in raising funds for the library and
made a special effort in acquiring funding for the new Storymobile. He
has been the voice of the library as Master of Ceremonies at the annual
Author Gala for several years.
The award recipients received framed plaques and the choice of
a book to be dedicated to them and placed in the library collection.
The event wrapped up with a reading from Nina White,
Children and Youth Services coordinator.
The luncheon will start at noon in the
Lowry Room. Those who wish may purchase
lunch at noon for $6. To reserve lunch, call
Dana at 570-326-0536, ext. 114 or use
the online reservation calendar at calendar.
jvbrown.edu. Reservations for lunch must be
made by 3 p.m. the Wednesday before the
review (May 4). Please note that you only
need to register if you wish to reserve lunch.
You may bring your own lunch or simply
attend the book review, which will start at
12:30 p.m.
The next Book Review Luncheon
will be Friday, October 7, 2016.
