WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN Issue 3 Williamsport HOGPEN March 2014 Williamsport MD Chapter 1544 SPRING IS APPROACHING – ARE YOU AND YOUR BIKE READY? IN THIS ISSUE Welcome to the New Look by Bob Corley This month we’re unveiling a new design for the Williamsport HOGPEN Newsletter. I hope you enjoy the new layout. This month’s newsletter also has a new editor - me. The chapter would like to thank Kevin Buck for handling the editor role for the past year or so. I’m sure I have my work cut out for me. If you have ideas or stories to contribute, please forward them on to any of the officers or myself. We can always use a good article. Enough already On another subject, I just can’t wait for spring. You’ll see this same theme throughout the articles this month. Here is my quote of the month. I have this hanging in my office at work. “No one hates winter, like a person with a Harley sitting in their garage.” Harley-Davidson of Williamsport Staff Unwrapped Get to know Crystal Miller, Motor Clothes Specialist at Harley-Davidson Williamsport, through an interview with Donna Conway. What you can expect I’m going to do my best to make the newsletter look professional and easy to read. You may see me change things from time to time and try new stuff. After all, this is my first stab at it. Most of the writing will be coming from other people in the chapter and I’ll just administer getting the articles in the newsletter and managing the layout. In any case, I hope you enjoy the new look and feel. I’ll take any constructive criticism or feedback, good or bad. There are a lot of decent people in this chapter volunteering their time for the good of the chapter. I figure this is the least I can do to pay back for all of the enjoyment I’ve had since buying my Harley-Davidson and joining this chapter. Page 4 CALENDAR DATE CHANGES The lunch ride originally scheduled for March 3rd has moved to March 9th at 11 AM. At the request of the sponsoring dealer, the First State Poker Run has changed from April 26th to May 10th. Mark your calendars. Details forthcoming. Chili Cook-off We give you the lowdown on the upcoming Chili Cookoff including rules and judging parameters. Page 11 WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 3 2 From the Director by Michelle Stouffer How many of us have said, “I’m so done with winter!” or something to that effect? I know I have heard it a lot. The bad news is, winter is not done with us yet. The good news is, spring is right around the corner! We’re going to kick it into high gear starting with the Chili Cook-off on March 22nd. After a little fun, we’ll work in some learning in March and April. March 29th is the Road Captain Training class, the beginning of April is H.O.T. (HOG Officer Training) and April 19th is a Group Riding Workshop. We will be well prepared to jump into this season with both feet, or I should say with both tires. Calendars CHILI COOKOFF Mark your calendars for the Chili Cookoff at Harley-Davidson of Williamsport March 22nd at 11AM. Make sure you get your calendar, available at Harley Davidson of Williamsport, so you can start planning now. It’s looking like yet another fun year for the HOG family! See you on the next ride! Assistant Director by Bertie Brady The past few days I have heard birds singing in the tree outside the window at my home and when it isn’t cloudy I have noticed the daylight is lasting just a bit longer. This means that while there is still snow on the ground I have hope that spring will get here quickly and we can ride again. Please keep alert this time of year, when the temperatures rises enough to fire up the Harley, for areas of loose gravel on curves and at intersections as well as potential slippery areas. If your bike has not been out of the garage all winter be sure to check the tire pressure, brakes and signal lights. A quick peek at the oil level is also a good idea. I hope you have had the opportunity to purchase your chapter calendar so you can keep up with the rides that are scheduled for this year. There are lots of opportunities for ice cream and some overnight rides that are sure to satisfy your adventurous self. If you still need a calendar they can be purchased for $5 and are available at Harley-Davidson of Williamsport or at the next chapter meeting. Many thanks to our member Bob Corley for creating our great looking calendar this year. BERTIE’S QUOTE OF THE MONTH "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing." HELEN KELLER WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 3 3 Treasurer Tidbits by Kevin Stouffer I’m getting excited! The weather is finally warming up a little, the riding season is getting closer, and we have a lot of great things planned. First is the Chili Cook Off, and then before you know it the riding begins. I have a couple of rides planned that I’m really looking forward to. On Memorial Day we’re going to have lunch at The Front Porch restaurant at Seneca Rocks. The ride is beautiful and if you’ve never been on it you should make plans to join me. It’s a long day, but with all the scenic roads it’s over before you know it and you’ll think; this day was too short. Then on July 31st I’m leading a ride back to Tennessee. This time we are going to experience the Cherohala Skyway and The Tail of the Dragon. This ride will be for three nights returning on August 3rd. I’ll have more details in the future. Helmets Safety Tips by Ken Conway Most recreational activities and sports have their own protective clothing and equipment, and motorcycling is no exception. Every rider and passenger should wear: Sturdy over-the-ankle footwear with non-slip soles Long pants Jacket Full-fingered gloves DOT helmet Jackets When choosing a jacket and pants keep in mind that good quality protective gear may well prevent or reduce injury in the case of a crash. My own experience is testament to that! A jacket should fit comfortably. Leather is a good choice because it is durable and wind-resistant and it provides protection against injury; however, other abrasiveresistant synthetic fabrics are good choices also. Pants should be cut a bit long in the legs to fit well in a sitting position. Riding suits are available in one- and two-piece sets. Footwear Sturdy over-the-ankle footwear protects the rider from objects that can be thrown up from road such as stones and also protect against burns from exhaust pipes. Rubbersoled boots with low heels will grip the pavement as well as help keep feet on the footrests. Boots also provide valuable protection against foot and ankle injury in the event of a crash. Gloves Full-fingered gloves should fit snugly and will improve the grip on the handlebars and reduce hand fatigue as well as protect the hands from the elements and in the event of a fall. Look for gloves with the seams on the outside to prevent irritation. A full-face helmet provides the most protection. A three-quarter helmet also offers protection but doesn’t give you the same face and chin protection as a full-face helmet. Head injuries account for the majority of motorcycle fatalities, so your helmet choice is very important. Choose only a helmet that has a DOT sticker, which means that the helmet has passed safety test standards required by federal law. Helmets may also have a Snell Foundation sticker indicting it has additionally passed Snell safety tests. In making your clothing choices, always remember to dress for the season, particularly to prevent hypothermia in the winter. For more information on protective gear, go to www.msf-usa.org and search for the Basic Rider Course Rider Handbook. Personal Protective Gear information begins on page 10. Ride safely and have fun! NEXT MONTH SAFETY TIPS Pre-Ride Inspection. WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 3 4 Harley-Davidson of Williamsport Staff Unwrapped by Donna Conway This is the second in a series of articles to introduce members on a more personal level to the staff of Harley-Davidson of Williamsport. This month we feature HDW’s motor clothes guru, Crystal Miller. Four-wheelers were Crystal Miller’s mode of transportation as she was growing up in West Virginia mid-way between Berkeley Springs and Hedgesville. She had plenty of ground to cover on her parents 21 acre spread. In her mid-20’s, Crystal bought a 250 Ninja and learned to ride, but she sold the motorcycle about a year later and hasn’t yet gone back to riding. Crystal has been working at Harley-Davidson of Williamsport for nearly three years as a motor clothes specialist. She says she loves her customers. To quote Crystal, “my customers are passionate about riding and any time I can make their ride more comfortable or more enjoyable, or even more fun, then I feel that I have done my job to the best of my ability.” Crystal began her working life at age 15 at Crafter’s Market, a craft/country decorating store, in the Martinsburg Mall. She worked there for a couple of years and then was employed at various distribution centers until she went to work for the IRS where she was on staff for about 2.5 years. After that, she found a home at HDW. She says she thinks the guys who work there have become her over-protective big brothers. In her youth, Crystal was a member of the local 4-H club and each year showed the family animals (hogs, steers, turkeys, chickens, and rabbits) at the Berkeley County Youth Fair. She grew up with her mom and dad, older sister and younger brother. Presently, she and her fiancé Josh, live in Berkeley Springs in a new house they built this past summer. Their family includes a pit bull puppy, Jade, who Crystal says has become her “fur baby.” Spare time activities for Crystal include country crafts and decorating, and she loves to scrapbook when she can find the time. She also enjoys gardening, cooking and baking. Ken’s and my experiences with Crystal have been very positive. She does a terrific job of finding whatever we might be looking for and goes the extra step to get it for us. Her enthusiasm to help and attention to detail are great traits. The motor clothes gals at HDW help out the Chapter throughout the year by taking care of sign-up sheets (Chili Cook-off) and selling tickets to events like the holiday party. Their help is surely appreciated. The Francis Scott Key has extended the discounted room rates for us until May 1 (was March 1). The password when making reservations is “Towers Family Reunion”. Here is the link to the FSK resort: http://fskfamily.com HOGS at the Beach vs. DELMARVA Bike Week There has been discussion and some confusion about these two events. That’s right, TWO distinct events, not two names for one event. HOGs at the Beach HATB is a joint gathering of members of the Maryland and Delaware H.O.G. Chapters. It is a closed, private party at Ocean City, Maryland, that celebrates the common interests of our Chapter members and the end of the summer riding season. The event has taken place since 1991. It is traditionally held the weekend after Labor Day. It is a non-commercial event open only to members of the Maryland and Delaware H.O.G. Chapters. It is free, sponsored by our local Harley-Davidson Dealers. About 300 of our members participate each year in festivities currently centered at the Francis Scott Key Family Resort. DELMARVA Bike Week DELMARVA Bike Week is a commercial event that has taken place since 2001 in early September in the vicinity of Ocean City, Maryland. This event is open to all members of the public. Organizers attract a wide audience, including all types of bikes and many vendors selling their wares. They offer professional entertainment and other attractions. The bottom line is that there are two separate events a week apart in the Ocean City area. Attend one or both. Regardless of your decision, Ocean City is not that far away, it can be a weekend or a day-trip. You should do your own research to determine which function is right for you. We hope we see you at HOGs on the Beach, but either way, Ride Safe and Have Fun! WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 3 Around Town 7 WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 3 8 WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN Issue 3 MD/DE HOG Rally Cumberland, MD June 19-22 The 2014 Maryland/Delaware State HOG Rally is in Cumberland, MD. State rallies are for all National HOG members and a guest. If you have never attended a state rally before, this annual event is put on by a rally committee, and is in a new location each year. For Maryland and Delaware, this is two years in Maryland and one year in Delaware. Rallies are open to all National HOG members and a guest, regardless if they are a member of a chapter. They are a way for HOG members to explore other areas of our states, meet HOG members from around the country, and, of course, “Ride and Have Fun”. Currently there are HOG members from 11 different states and Canada attending. The 2014 rally in western Maryland will have guided rides through some of Maryland’s most beautiful areas as well as West Virginia and Pennsylvania. There are scenic loops, historical sites, and things to do either in town or riding. See if you can find the geo caching locations, win the WET-T shirt contest, or just explore on your own the towns of Cumberland, Frostburg and Mt. Savage. Oh, and don’t forget the nightly parties! Check the website for a more detailed listing of rides and events. We have Jack Daniels commemorative single barrel available for purchase by rally participants. The bottles will come with a “necklace” indicating the MD/DE 2014 State HOG rally in Cumberland. Supply is limited, so we are organizing a list of rally attendees who are interested in purchasing these bottles. There are only 240 bottles available, so if you are interested in getting one, let us know. Cost should be approximately $55/bottle and will be picked up during the rally. Registration is open and you may do so online www.mddestatehogrally.com. Cost is just $30/person, and members who register by March 15 will receive a rally pin and patch. T-shirts are available for purchase on-line when you register. Online registration closes on May 1 2014. Hotel rooms are listed on the website – ask for the HOG rally block for the special rate. The Ramada and Fairfield Inn in Cumberland are both within walking distance of downtown and restaurants and entertainment. La Vale lodging is just 4.5 miles, and the rally team is looking into an evening shuttle between La Vale and the evening events. “Like” the rally page at Maryland/Delaware HOG rally 2014 to stay up-do-date with events. Update The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is now taking reservations for anyone wishing to take the scenic railroad during the rally. Go to www.wmsr.com select “purchase tickets” from the top tab, and select the information. Our promotional code is “HOG2014” for the discount rate of $30. The train departs Cumberland at 11:00am, goes through the mountains and arrives in Frostburg at 12:30pm. IT will stop to be turned on the turntable, riders can eat, shop, or watch the train be turned for its return trip at 2:00pm. It will arrive back in Cumberland at 3:00pm. The city of Frostburg is working on a welcome for us on Saturday from 11:30am to 2:00pm, and working on a police escort to town, so anyone that does not ride the train may able to see the train being turned at this time, if interested. WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN Issue 3 WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN Chili Cook-off 2014 Chili Contest Rules Chili is defined for this contest as any kind of meat, or beans, or combination cooked with chili peppers, various other spices and ingredients. Both meat and vegetarian chilies are acceptable, but will not be judged separately. All chili must be homemade. All entries must be prepared at home and brought to Harley-Davidson of Williamsport on the day of the contest at 11:00 AM. The judging will begin at 11:30 AM. Winners will be announced at 1:00 PM. There will be prizes for first and second place. Contestants are encouraged to bring at least 4 quarts of chili in a crock-pot or other container to keep the chili warm. (140 ̊) Please bring an extension cord; electrical outlets will be provided. Provide a ladle or serving utensil with your entry. No sampling of chili is allowed directly from the cooking pot. If you have special toppings you will need to supply those as well. You must provide a list of all ingredients on an index card being sure to include all items, even the type of oil used and if you sauté or sweat any ingredients before adding them to your chili. All chili will be judged on the following: Aroma, Color, Consistency, Taste, and Aftertaste. Color - Chili should look appetizing; reddish brown is generally considered good. Aroma - Chili should smell appetizing. This also indicates what is in store when you taste it. Consistency - Chili must have a good ratio of sauce and meat. It should not be dry, watery, grainy, lumpy, or greasy. Taste - Taste, above all else, is the most important factor. The taste should blend the combination of the meat, spices, etc. with no particular ingredient being dominant. Aftertaste - The aftertaste or bite is the heat created by the various types of spices and/or peppers.
