WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN Volume 11 Issue 5 Williamsport HOGPEN May 2014 Williamsport MD Chapter 1544 TH MEMORIAL DAY IS MONDAY, MAY 26 IN THIS ISSUE The History of Memorial Day by Bob Corley Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer. Early Observances The Civil War claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history, requiring the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries. By the late 1860s Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers. It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated; numerous different communities may have independently initiated the memorial gatherings. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Waterloo—which had first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags. Evolution of Memorial Day Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars. For decades, Memorial Day was observed on May 30, the date selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday. Page 5 WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 5 2 From the Director by Michelle Stouffer Now that it’s finally acting like spring, it’s time to shine the bikes up and get ready for a great riding season. The calendar starts ramping up in May. Join me Friday May 2nd for a ride to Frederick’s 1st Bike Night, leaving at 5:00pm. Since it will already be starting, we’ll just shoot down I70 to get there so we don’t miss the fun. Thanks to Harley Davidson of Williamsport for allowing us to set up registration there and return there for a bite to eat afterwards. There are many other rides in between that include lunch rides, all day rides and, of course ice cream rides. Something for everyone! Hope to see you there. I also hope you will join me on Saturday May 31st on the Ride for Life for the American Cancer Society. See the flyer later in the newsletter for details. This is always a great ride and what a great cause. Secretary Notes We also thank our dealer for use of the HDW Meeting Center. The meeting center is located in the building just behind the shop in Williamsport at 10212 Governor Lane Blvd, Ste 1001. Our monthly officer meetings are held there and it was recently used to conduct the chapter’s Group Riding Workshop. by Donna Conway Six officers recently had the privilege of attending HOG Officer Training (H.O.T.) in Hershey, PA, and what a couple of days it was! The theme was Built from the Ground Up, and we learned how to do that in many ways - by having the opportunity to network with other HOG officers primarily from the East Coast and Mid-West, by attending great quality workshops and by promoting our own chapter. Workshops covered every conceivable topic a HOG officer might want to explore – from Building Strong Foundations to Connecting with Social Media to Conducting Great Group Rides to Less Risk, More Fun. Overall, a top- notch learning opportunity no matter what office you hold. This year nearly 800 HOG officers attended the H.O.T. in Hershey and there are three other H.O.T. events held in other regions of the country with a total attendance each year of around 3,000. Harley-Davidson does a fantastic job with the H.O.T. events, and our dealer deserves a big Thank You for supporting our chapter officers’ attendance. Don’t feel slighted if your birth month/date doesn’t appear in our newsletter. If it doesn’t it’s because we don’t have that information. Just let Bill or Barb Dutton know your birthday and the next time around your birthday will be recognized. WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 5 3 DID YOU KNOW? Treasurer Tidbits Last year HOG chapters organized over 50,000 rides in the U.S. by Kevin Stouffer We had a great start to the riding season in April. Six of our officers attended H.O.T., the Spring Open House was a success, and the weather was great for The Delmarva Poker Run ride. Now bring on the ice cream rides. At The Open House we had our bikes blessed, we ate some great pulled pork and hotdogs, and then got to test ride a number of bikes available in 2014. I’d also like to thank the dealer for allowing the chapter to help serve the food at the Open House and accept donations. As we have done in the past, one half of the contributions from the food donations we received will be donated to the USO. I have a great scenic ride planned for Memorial Day to Seneca Rocks, WV. The ride is about 300 miles through Petersburg WV., looping around through Canaan Valley and returning through Western Maryland via I68. It is a beautiful ride that will take most of the day, about eight hours with stops and lunch. I hope to see you all there. Safety Tips The chapter recently held a successful Group Riding Workshop with a total of 12 people attending; five of those were “new” group riders, three of whom were chapter members. I hope the workshop experience will encourage those members to join some of the many rides the chapter offers. If you’d like to participate in a workshop but were unable to attend the most recent one, just let me know. Additional workshops can be scheduled throughout the year. Below is a diagram of the MSF recommended group riding staggered formation, which our chapter uses. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or the choke as needed if you have one. Some motorcycles require that the clutch be squeezed before the starter will operate. Even if not required, it’s good to squeeze the clutch lever as a precaution against starting in gear. poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed. This month I want to talk a little about engine start/stop procedures. Before starting your engine use the procedure called FINE-C. It stands for Fuel, Ignition, Neutral, Engine (cut-off switch) and Choke/Clutch. Turn the fuel valve to the ON position (vacuum valves may not have an “off” position, and if you have a fuel injected engine you won’t have a valve). Turn the ignition switch to the ON position; the indicator lights should come on. Shift the transmission to NEUTRAL; check to be sure by rolling the bike with the clutch lever and front brake released (don’t rely on the light on the instrument cluster). Put the engine cut-off switch in the RUN/ON position. Set To stop the engine, move the engine cut-off switch to OFF. Do this every time so you can locate the switch quickly if you need to. Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Turn the fuel valve to OFF if your bike has a manual valve. This stopping procedure is known as TKV – Thumb/Key/Valve. Ride Safely WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 5 4 Harley-Davidson of Williamsport Staff Unwrapped by Donna Conway This is the fourth in a series of articles to introduce members on a more personal level to the staff of Harley-Davidson of Williamsport. This month we feature one of HDW’s service techs, Todd Baer. Todd Baer is a graduate of the American Motorcycle Institute (AMI) in Daytona, FL, and is an “A” tech at HDW. He began working at Harley-Davidson of Frederick on May 1, 2000, as a full-time service tech and transferred to Harley-Davidson of Williamsport when the shop opened in 2003. He kept himself busy in high school by working as a tire installer and also at M&S Cycles in Chambersburg. Before going to work for HDFR/HDW he worked for Honda of Hagerstown as their parts manager, for FedEx for about 10 years and at Twigg Cycles in parts and doing PDI’s (pre-delivery inspections). Todd grew up in Waynesboro, PA, where he started riding motorcycles at the age of eight. He says he has too many motorcycle stories from the last 40 years to mention. Todd and wife Kendra now live in the countryside south of Hagerstown. They have two children, son Indy, who you may see helping out at HDW on occasion, and younger daughter Sophia. Having fun with co-workers and customers is one of the enjoyable parts of his job at HDW Todd says. Helping customers customize their bikes is his favorite work thing to do. When not working or riding his motorcycle, Todd loves anything to do with the mountains, camping, fishing, and hunting. Todd was a charter member of HOG Chapter 1544 and he thanks the Chapter for their support of the dealer. He says it means a lot to him and to the dealership. Todd is a die-hard gear head! I wasn’t going to mention his many motorcycles because there have been so many, but here goes (and these are just the ones he can remember and there have been two of some of these models). Hondas: Z50, XR500R, CR250R, CR500R, VFR750F, CBR1000F, ST100, XR250L, XR650L, GL1200A, XR50R, XR100R, CRF150R, CBX; Yamahas: YZ80, DT175; Suzukis: GS550ES, GS1100E, GS1250; and a 2006 Harley VRSCR. The two “A” techs at HDW, Todd and Shannon, are both excellent mechanics. They treat every bike they work on as if it were their own. We as a chapter are very fortunate to have them associated with our sponsoring dealer. But as the day approached the news grew better and better. We knew we were going to have a great day for riding and all that was left was hoping for a great turn out. It’s hard sometimes to put into words the difference between leading a ride with one or two bikes versus ten or even twelve bikes. When we saw the group that showed up it made the day even more exciting. All total we had 17 riders on 12 bikes. We had some old timers, some newer members and even some past members stopped by to join the ride. There was Kevin and Michele Stouffer, Gale and Wanda Stouffer, Howard and Nancy LaVigne, Bob and Susan Glass, Jim Kalbflesh and Tammy Owens, Dave Baker, Don Goglio, John Ahalt, Les Hurst, Bob Corley and Mike and Angel Pearson. It’s not hard to put into words how much fun it is to share our love of riding with our fellow chapter members and our guests. Temperatures were a little nippy first thing in the morning and everyone was dressed in layers. But we all knew that by mid-day we would be shedding those layers and putting on the sun block. The ride was about 161 miles in length and we made our usual stop in Middletown to pick up our members who live in that area. Our other big stop was at WaWa’s just before going over the Bay Bridge. Having to pay tolls for 12 bikes is much easier when the first bike pays for everyone, so we collected up the money and took a short break. Even though the temps were up and our spirits were soaring, we were brought back to earth as we crossed over the water. As we approached the bridges we could feel the temperature dropped 10 degrees or more. Still a little early for the bathing suits. The ride through Maryland and Delaware was wonderful and it seemed for most of the day that motorcycle after motorcycle crossed our path. It was as though the day was a celebration of spring and all bikers were out enjoying a ride. We made it to Seaford and visited the Harley Davidson dealer, each taking our chance at pulling the best poker hand out of a bag. As usual I picked five cards, none of which were the same suite. I really don’t know how that happens but that’s my luck. Anyway it was a great fellowship of like-minded people spending a day on their bikes and helping our sister chapter with their yearly fundraiser. I can’t wait to see all of them at our fundraiser later this year. We stopped and had lunch before we headed back to Williamsport. There was some talk about heading on to Key West, Florida, but with the reality of having to return to work the next day, we were forced to head for home. All in all, we traveled over 300 miles, soaked up as much sun as we could and tried to put behind us the brutally cold and snowy winter. As a chapter, we are constantly looking for events and rides to get our members involved and behind the handlebars. Sunday was just what the doctor ordered. We will remember this ride for some time and look forward to returning next year to Seaford Delaware. I am glad for the ones that got the opportunity to ride with us and in a way sorry for those who couldn’t make it. There will be many more days like Sunday ahead of us and I hope to see each and every one of our members being able to enjoy their Harleys like we did this past weekend. Come out and join the fun. See you soon. Anonymously submitted WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 5 6 HOG 1544 Yahoo Group You may have heard us talking about the Yahoo Group in our chapter meetings. While we wait for a solution to our chapter website, this web-based user group allows us to swap photos, files, polls, calendars, links, and more with members. Special thanks to Don Goglio for setting this up. Here's how you can get the most out of Groups: Be courteous. Everyone wants to be treated with respect, and showing respect to others makes the community better for all members. Stay on topic. Although all groups are different, most groups appreciate it when you stay on topic. If you constantly stray from the topic the group owner may remove your content—or you—from the group altogether. Moderate your content. Keep adultoriented content only in agerestricted areas. Post your own content. Have the other group member's permissions before re-posting their content. This goes for you too, moderators. Have a good time. When people behave responsibly and respectfully the community thrives and everybody wins. To join group: Group is open to all Williamsport, MD HOG members. Go to groups.yahoo.com/groups/HOG1544 and click on “Join group”. An email will be sent to Group Moderator for approval. You will be asked to create a Yahoo account to access entire group website, but it is not necessary to send and receive messages only. Uses: Instantly email entire Group to arrange non-chapter pick-up rides by entering a single email address: [email protected] Messages are sent to the primary email address from your settings; reply to individual or entire group right from the body of the message. Upload pictures of Chapter events to share with the entire group View and download Chapter event calendar View and download Chapter newsletters, event flyers, and other documents Share and view links to related and interesting websites Create and participate in group polls Go to settings to personalize your account and choose how you receive messages Here are some things Groups shouldn't be used for: Yahoo Groups Guidelines Yahoo Groups helps you connect with groups of people who share your interests and passions. State rallies are for all National HOG members and a guest. If you have never attended a state rally before, this annual event is put on by a rally committee, and is in a new location each year. For Maryland and Delaware, this is two years in Maryland and one year in Delaware. Rallies are open to all National HOG members and a guest, regardless if they are a member of a chapter. They are a way for HOG members to explore other areas of our states, meet HOG members from around the country, and, of course, “Ride and Have Fun”. Currently there are HOG members from 11 different states and Canada attending. The 2014 rally in western Maryland will have guided rides through some of Maryland’s most beautiful areas as well as West Virginia and Pennsylvania. There are scenic loops, historical sites, and things to do either in town or riding. See if you can find the geo caching locations, win the WET-T shirt contest, or just explore on your own the towns of Cumberland, Frostburg and Mt. Savage. Oh, and don’t forget the nightly parties! Check the website for a more detailed listing of rides and events. We have Jack Daniels commemorative single barrel available for purchase by rally participants. The bottles will come with a “necklace” indicating the MD/DE 2014 State HOG rally in Cumberland. Supply is limited, so we are organizing a list of rally attendees who are interested in purchasing these bottles. There are only 240 bottles available, so if you are interested in getting one, let us know. Cost should be approximately $55/bottle and will be picked up during the rally. Registration is open and you may do so online www.mddestatehogrally.com. Cost is just $30/person, and members who register by March 15 will receive a rally pin and patch. T-shirts are available for purchase on-line when you register. Online registration closes on May 1 2014. Hotel rooms are listed on the website – ask for the HOG rally block for the special rate. The Ramada and Fairfield Inn in Cumberland are both within walking distance of downtown and restaurants and entertainment. La Vale lodging is just 4.5 miles, and the rally team is looking into an evening shuttle between La Vale and the evening events. “Like” the rally page at Maryland/Delaware HOG rally 2014 to stay up-do-date with events. Update The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is now taking reservations for anyone wishing to take the scenic railroad during the rally. Go to www.wmsr.com select “purchase tickets” from the top tab, and select the information. Our promotional code is “HOG2014” for the discount rate of $30. The train departs Cumberland at 11:00am, goes through the mountains and arrives in Frostburg at 12:30pm. IT will stop to be turned on the turntable, riders can eat, shop, or watch the train be turned for its return trip at 2:00pm. It will arrive back in Cumberland at 3:00pm. The city of Frostburg is working on a welcome for us on Saturday from 11:30am to 2:00pm, and working on a police escort to town, so anyone that does not ride the train may able to see the train being turned at this time, if interested. The Francis Scott Key has extended the discounted room rates for us until May 1 (was March 1). The password when making reservations is “Towers Family Reunion”. Here is the link to the FSK resort: http://fskfamily.com HOGS at the Beach vs. DELMARVA Bike Week There has been discussion and some confusion about these two events. That’s right, TWO distinct events, not two names for one event. City area. Attend one or both. Regardless of your decision, Ocean City is not that far away, it can be a weekend or a day-trip. You should do your own research to determine which function is right for you. We hope we see you at HOGs on the Beach, but either way, Ride Safe and Have Fun! When and where is it? Dates for this year’s event are September 5-7, 2014. You can come on Friday or Saturday for those day’s events, or for the entire weekend. Our headquarters is the Francis Scott Key Family Resort in West Ocean City. HOGs at the Beach Why come? HATB is a joint gathering of members of the Maryland and Delaware H.O.G. Chapters. It is a closed, private party at Ocean City, Maryland, that celebrates the common interests of our Chapter members and the end of the summer riding season. The event has taken place since 1991. It is traditionally held the weekend after Labor Day. It is a non-commercial event open only to members of the Maryland and Delaware H.O.G. Chapters. It is free, sponsored by our local Harley-Davidson Dealers. About 300 of our members participate each year in festivities currently centered at the Francis Scott Key Family Resort. We always have a lot of events and fun during this annual weekend. Friday night we mingle with friends during a free barbeque chicken dinner, a cornhole tournament, and an evening social with a DJ. Saturday we have several new local rides through the back roads to choose from, a free lunch cookout, and a field events competition. Saturday night you have your choice between a social at the hotel or you can take the free shuttle into Ocean City. DELMARVA Bike Week DELMARVA Bike Week is a commercial event that has taken place since 2001 in early September in the vicinity of Ocean City, Maryland. This event is open to all members of the public. Organizers attract a wide audience, including all types of bikes and many vendors selling their wares. They offer professional entertainment and other attractions. The bottom line is that there are two separate events a week apart in the Ocean HATB FAQs What is it? It is NOT a commercial event, such as a National/State H.O.G. Rally, Bike Week, or Dealer Open House. It is a free private party held in Ocean City, Maryland. It is a closed event open exclusively to Maryland and Delaware H.O.G. Chapter members. This joint gathering of local H.O.G. Chapter members allows us to get together at the end of the summer riding season to celebrate our common interests. What does it cost? Nothing, it’s free. There is no admission charge to attend, and most expenses are covered by donations from our sponsoring Harley-Davidson Dealerships. Your only costs are gas to ride there, any food not already provided (see below), and a hotel if you come down for a night or the entire weekend. How does it take place? It is coordinated by a group representing the eleven local H.O.G. Chapters. The work is divided among those Chapters and their members. If you would like to volunteer and meet members from other Chapters, please contact your Chapter Director. Or you can just come and enjoy the event! We hope we see you at this year’s HOGs at the Beach! WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 5 13 Support Our Members Businesses DID YOU KNOW?
