WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN Volume 13 Issue 1 Williamsport HOGPEN January 2016 Williamsport MD Chapter 1544 MAKE IT A GREAT YEAR IN THIS ISSUE And we’re off… by Bob Corley The New Year is here and we’ve already got a ride under our belts. We don’t mess around. Didn’t take us long to continue the “ride every month” mantra. After staying up well past my bedtime New Year’s Eve, we were off bright and early to watch the annual Williamsport Polar Bear Plunge on New Year’s Day. And boy was it cold! I’ve included some pictures in my short ride recap on page 4. We have also had some pretty cool pickup rides from the Yahoo site. Recently a ride was organized to Woodstock Virginia. See Mike and Don’s articles on the next page for more info on the Yahoo Group and the recent ride to Woodstock. Next weekend the road captains will be meeting to plan out the rides for 2016. I’m looking forward to seeing the schedule and I’m sure with several new road captains we will have a variety of ice cream, lunch, and overnight rides to choose from. Although there are no more scheduled chapter rides for January, we still have the chapter holiday party coming up on Saturday the 16th to look forward to. Be sure to join us. It’s a good time. Change in Officers As Mike mentioned last chapter meeting, we have some changes in the officer lineup. Kevin Stouffer will be taking over the Treasurer responsibilities for the departing Jim Ryan and Michelle Stouffer will assume the Senior Road Captain position. Polar Bear Plunge Ride Recap Bob Corley recaps the Polar Bear Plunge Ride. Page 4 Well that’s all from me this month. I hope everyone enjoyed their time off over the holidays and were able to spend some quality time with family. “No one hates winter like a person with a Harley sitting in his or her garage”. January Safety Tips Ken Conway shares safety tips for cold weather riding conditions in this month’s article. Page 3 WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 1 2 Group. It may have been one of those once or twice in your lifetime events, but it happened none the less. As many of you know we have a Yahoo group. Many times during the year someone will suggest a ride on Yahoo and a pick up ride is born. What made this ride so special, was one of our newer members sent out the suggestion. She asked in the e-mail for one of our road captains to lead the ride and one of our newest road captains took up the challenge. He led us on a ride that was just absolutely incredible. We had 14 bikes and 21 riders for a pick up ride. That is amazing. It was one of the highpoints of the year. By the way, did I mention it was on December 27th. Did I also mention it was nearly 70 degrees. We rode to Woodstock Virginia and ate at the Spring House Tavern. The ride was great. The company was fantastic and the memories are priceless. Mike Assistant Director by Don Goglio Thanks to El Niño we have been able to get in more riding than we usually would for this time of year. Without many Chapter rides on the calendar, it has been great having the Yahoo Group to put together some group rides when the weather got exceptionally nice. What is the Yahoo Group?! Well, if you don’t know what it is, you have been missing out on a lot of fun and riding with other Chapter members. When you join the Williamsport HOG Yahoo Group you are able to send and receive email messages about non-Chapter “pick-up” rides put together by members, on their own, to fill in any gaps in the calendar that may exist. Most of the time these rides are as large, or larger, than some Chapter rides. It could be a short ride to dinner or a nice long ride to someone’s favorite destination or hot spot. If you don’t want to miss out on any more of these rides, join the Group right now! Just go to the Chapter website at www.williamsporthog.org and click on “Yahoo Groups” in the “Tools & Utilities” section on the left column and click on the “Join Group” button at the Yahoo Group page to request membership into the With the new year upon us, it is time to tally up your Chapter Challenge booklets for last year to see if you got in enough seat time to win one of the prizes. The Chapter Challenge lets you earn points for the miles traveled on your motorcycle, for attending HOG rides and events, as well as points for visiting HD dealerships, National and State Parks, restaurants, and each Maryland County during the 2015 calendar year. The member that turns in the booklet with the most points wins a $200 gift card to Harley-Davidson of Williamsport plus a free one-year Chapter membership, 2nd place wins a $100 HDW gift card plus one-year membership. Bring them to the Chapter meeting on January 18th and we will announce the winners and hand out the prizes. Good Luck! Lastly, we are gathering up the ride sign-in sheets to add up the Chapter miles for every member to see who wins the Chapter Mileage Challenge patch and bragging rights for the next year. You didn’t need to do anything for this contest other than attend as many Chapter rides as you could throughout the past year. The member with the most miles ridden on 2015 scheduled Chapter rides will receive the patch. The winner will be announced at the January or February meeting. I am looking forward to another great year as your Assistant Director! We have a lot of great things planned for 2016 and I can’t wait to get going! A huge and sincere "Thank you!" to everyone at HDW and to every member for all the support throughout the year! HAPPY NEW YEAR! Don WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 1 3 Treasurer Tidbits Senior Road Captain by Kevin Stouffer by Michelle Stouffer Another year is in the books now and we can wrap things up financially after the Holiday Party. And speaking of the Holiday Party, don’t forget the western theme. It seems fitting to have the Western theme for our party. After all we did have a Wild West ride this year. The next riding season is looking great. We have a number of new Road Captains this year with plenty of fresh ideas. We are also planning a second fundraiser this year. It will be an observation ride. Each rider will ride to designated locations and answer questions unique to each location. Every participant with all of the correct answers will be entered into a drawing for prizes. I think it is a great idea and I’m looking forward to it. So I say let’s hurry up and get this winter over with so the fun can begin. Kevin Safety Tips by Ken Conway I hope everyone enjoyed the 2015 rides your Road Captains planned and hope you were able to participate in a variety of them. I look forward to serving as the Senior Road Caption for 2016, as I could not ask for a more awesome group of folks to work with. Due to many new additions to our Road Captain roster, I think we are going to have an even more amazing year in 2016. Hard to imagine how it could get much better. Maybe a little more cooperation from the weather would help. We will be having the planning meeting on January 9th where we will put many rides on the schedule for the year. I can’t wait to see the new calendar. It will be jammed packed with something for everyone. Don’t forget, we will be having the Most Chapter Miles contest, so my New Year’s Resolution is to make as many chapter rides as possible this year. How about you? Michelle 2016 is upon us and time to think of being prepared for the riding season. As I said last month, some of us continue to ride in the cold weather. Effective and appropriate riding attire for all conditions is necessary to be comfortable and not be distracted by being too warm or too cold or wet. That distraction can be detrimental to your riding safety. It can cause loss of concentration on the most important part of riding, which is constantly SEEing. This is a very short discussion but contains a lot of room for thought on what you may want to get for upcoming riding. Ride safely, have fun and stay comfortable. WILLIAMSPORT HOG MEMBERS 104 WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN | Issue 1 Polar Bear Plunge Ride Recap by Bob Corley What’s crazier than a bunch of people riding their Harley’s on New Year’s Day? A bunch of people jumping into the frigid Potomac River on New Year’s Day. Twelve members braved the cold to witness this spectacle. Although it may have been the shortest ride that we will do this year (roughly 3 miles), it definitely will be one of the coldest. Even with heated gear, the wind and the freezing temperatures made for an uncomfortable ride. That said, when the festivities were over, most of us were not ready to pack it in just yet. So we rode to the Hagerstown Dinner to enjoy lunch and the typical camaraderie that makes these rides special. Here are a few pictures from the day. Thanks to Michelle Stouffer and James Kisner for the pictures from their Facebook posts. 4 WILLIAMSPORT HOGPEN CHAPTER OFFICERS Director - Mike Pearson [email protected] 301-730-1046 Volume 13 Issue 1 Upcoming Rides and Events Asst.
