This month I will celebrate my third year as a
proud Harley owner and therefore my third
year as a member of the Williamsport Harley
Owners Group. The enjoyment I get out of
this chapter far exceeded my expectations.
After a change in life circumstances, I found
myself moving to Hagerstown where I didn’t
know anyone. Living by myself for the first
time in years, I quickly realized I needed a
hobby and also wondered how I could meet
new people. HOG to the rescue.
So what can you do?
Get out there and help support our chapter.
We can always use volunteers at our chapter
and dealer events. Join us for group rides.
Attend the monthly meetings. Get a friend or
neighbor to join the chapter. Support our
sponsoring dealer.
The chapter’s success is in all of our hands.
Let’s keep it strong, friendly, and most of all fun.

Word gets around
So I’m talking to my girlfriend Judy the other
night (she lives in Tennessee) and she tells
me that her hairstylist wants to purchase a
new motorcycle. He doesn’t want a loud one
and wants one with all the storage options
and gadgets. I won’t tell you the
manufacturer he’s thinking about (but the
initials are BMW). Judy then pipes in with
how much I enjoy being a member of the
Harley Owners Group and all of the good
things that come with it. Now I suppose
other manufactures have owners groups, but
I must say that HOG and our local
Williamsport Chapter make owning a HarleyDavidson that much more rewarding.
Don’t just keep up. Take the
lead.
Want to go on a two-week trip?
We are in the early panning stages for a trip out west in
2015. The Beartooth Highway is high on the list of
destinations.

From the Director

The HOG Family has had a rough month. We
lost a part of our family, our friend and our
Secretary Donna Conway. There’s not
enough room in the newsletter to say all the
great things about Donna and the kind of
person she was. She was the most gracious
person I knew and never wanted attention on
herself. Donna was fun loving and a gogetter. She was calm, cool, and collected and
had a great sense of humor. Donna was the
glue that held the officer group together. She
kept us organized, on track and volunteered
much of her time and effort to this chapter.
Let’s cherish all the great memories we have
of Donna.
We also keep Bill Dutton and his family in our
thoughts and prayers as his mother passed
away, actually the same day as Donna. It’s
always hard to lose anyone, especially a
parent.
It’s time to take to our bikes, it’s time to have lots of fun.
It’s time to join our Harley friends, for hours under the summer sun.
But some of us are hurting, life has dealt us a mean curve.
The kind that tests our metal, when our choice would be to swerve.
The kind that tends to turn us, from jolly to just plain sad.
The kind that leaves us hurting, so very, very, very bad.
We lost some wonderful ladies, a mother and also a wife.
We wanted them to be here forever, walking beside us each day through life.
But sometimes life can be so fragile, and now their candles have burned out.
Each had lived long meaningful lives, each loved by many there’s no doubt.
We will continue thinking of Mark and Lisa
Mummert and their family. Lisa has
advanced liver cancer and has been made
comfortable at home with her family and
Hospice.
We stop and try to remember, the lives that we miss so much.
They say bad things seem to happen in
threes. We would love if they didn’t happen
at all. Let’s hope for the best as we move
forward, while continuing to support those in
need.
But it’s time to help our brothers and sisters, burden this terrible load.
Donations, flowers and cards have been sent
on behalf of the chapter for these
members/friends/HOG family.
One thing we know for sure: our HOG family
sticks together, through thick and thin. We
have each other’s back and we are there for
each other. I am honored to be a part of such
a great group.
The smiles which filled our hearts with joy, so many people did their lives
touch.
We say we are a Harley family, drawn together by our love for the road.
Although the sun is beating down, we take some time to remember these
two.
And the ones who have been left behind, the ones who are feeling blue.
We know the hurt will lessen, but we know it won’t happen over night.
On the wings of angels towards heaven, we watch as they rise out of sight.

It has been quite a busy riding season so far
this year with still plenty of rides and events
to look forward to. I am excited about the
ride scheduled for July 29th to Cherohala
Skyway. Even though it is a long ride I am
sure that Kevin has it well planned with
plenty of breaks and gas stops. It is
important to stop often for breaks so that
you don’t develop leg or arm
cramps…besides it is fun to visit with all the
members that are on the ride.
Don’t forget about the chapter Picnic Sunday
August 17th . There will be plenty of food
and bike games that are always fun. Tickets
can be purchased at the dealership.
If you attended the MD DE Rally in June and
missed the ride to Mount Savage or are
interested in going, another trip is planned
for October 10-12, 2014, to Cumberland to
open Mount Savage and attend a murder
mystery train. There will be a special rate at
the Fairfield Inn by Marriott. More details will
be available shortly so keep an eye out for
the email blast.
BERTIE’S QUOTE OF THE MONTH
‘Hogs at the Beach’ is coming up quickly and
there are some great events planned for this
year including a welcome dinner on Friday
then a DJ will rock us into the evening. Rides
will be scheduled for the Ocean City area and
a picnic on Saturday followed by bike games.
More detail is given later in the newsletter.

Treasurer Tidbits

The River Rat Poker Run was a success.
Thanks to all the members who came out
and helped. We had perfect weather and a
beautiful ride. About 34 bikes participated in
the ride, and 93 poker hands were played.
We were able to pay out $200 to first place,
$100 for second place, and $50 to third place.
This would not have been possible without
the support of our fellow Maryland and
Delaware Chapters. Some of them rode
almost 200 miles just to get here.

On August 16 at 7:30 AM we have a Chapter
ride headed to the Chesapeake Chapter’s
Poker Run. So we can have a beautiful fun
ride to Northeast Maryland, check off some
counties for the Riders Contest, and maybe
win a poker hand. All this fun while helping to
support a fellow Chapters Primary
fundraising event. How much better can it
get?
Thunder in the Valley
Ride Recap

We departed the dealership promptly at 9:31
am on 6/28/14. Seven bikes, seven members,
two guests, five were women and the other
four obviously men. Go girls!
Our first non-gas stop was at the Johnstown
Flood National Memorial near St. Michael, at
the site of the Lake Conemaugh Dam where
the Johnstown Flood all started. There is now
a charge to enter the building, see the
exhibits and watch the movie, news to our
leaders, in the past years it was only a charge
to see the movie. It is $4 well spent if you are
ever in the area and have more time to spend
learning the history of the area.
Then to the downtown area after some extra
riding because of construction, no ride is
complete until you do a U turn right? As for
the event, it appeared to be bigger as well as
the crowd. And again warm in the downtown
area. We spent an hour and a half visiting,
then off to the top of the incline. Again and
as always, a spectacular view of the area.
We turned toward home, stopped into the
local HD dealership, Zepka’s, then back
home. This was the first time for many of the
riders, we hope they enjoyed the trip, and
will perhaps return and spend more time next
year. There are many things to do and see.
Apologies go out to Don Goglio for not
having an ice cream stop planned. Next Ice
cream ride Don, eat two cones and another
for this diabetic Road Captain.

Go west young man (and woman)

If you were at the last chapter meeting you
probably heard that Kevin Stouffer is
planning an extended ride out West in 2015.
The ride is planned for the last week in July
and first week in August. Let him know if you
are interested. We will be having planning
meetings to determine all of the details. The
first one is scheduled for 9/30/14 at 6:30pm,
place TBD.

Entrance. Since opening to automobile travel
in 1937 the Beartooth Highway has
welcomed visitors from around the world –
introducing them to one of the most diverse
ecosystems accessible by auto in the United
States.
Although the exact destination had not been
determined yet, Kevin has stated that one
“must have” experience will be the Beartooth
Highway, a National Scenic Byways AllAmerican Road. This 68-mile byway winds

HOG’s at the
Beach 2014
September 5th – 7th
If you are planning to attend Hogs at the
Beach this year you can call for reservations
at the Francis Scott Key Family Resort at
410-213-0088. The Francis Scott Key has
extended the discounted room rates for us
until May 1 (was March 1). The password
when making reservations is “Towers Family
Reunion”.

HOGS at the Beach vs.
DELMARVA Bike Week
There has been discussion and some
confusion about these two events. That’s
right, TWO distinct events, not two names
for one event.
The bottom line is that there are two
separate events a week apart in the Ocean
City area. Attend one or both. Regardless of
your decision, Ocean City is not that far
away, it can be a weekend or a day-trip. You
should do your own research to determine
which function is right for you. We hope we
see you at HOGs on the Beach, but either
way, Ride Safe and Have Fun!
DELMARVA Bike Week
DELMARVA Bike Week is a commercial
event that has taken place since 2001 in early
September in the vicinity of Ocean City,
Maryland. This event is open to all members
of the public. Organizers attract a wide
audience, including all types of bikes and
many vendors selling their wares. They offer
professional entertainment and other
attractions.
Dates for this year’s event are September 57, 2014. You can come on Friday or Saturday
for those day’s events, or for the entire
weekend. Our headquarters is the Francis
Scott Key Family Resort in West Ocean City.
Why come?
HOGs at the Beach
HATB is a joint gathering of members of the
Maryland and Delaware H.O.G. Chapters. It is
a closed, private party at Ocean City,
Maryland, that celebrates the common
interests of our Chapter members and the
end of the summer riding season. The event
has taken place since 1991. It is traditionally
held the weekend after Labor Day. It is a
non-commercial event open only to
members of the Maryland and Delaware
H.O.G. Chapters. It is free, sponsored by our
local Harley-Davidson Dealers. About 300 of
our members participate each year in
festivities currently centered at the Francis
Scott Key Family Resort.
When and where is it?

What is it?
It is NOT a commercial event, such as a
National/State H.O.G. Rally, Bike Week, or
Dealer Open House. It is a free private party
held in Ocean City, Maryland. It is a closed
event open exclusively to Maryland and
Delaware H.O.G. Chapter members. This
joint gathering of local H.O.G. Chapter
members allows us to get together at the
end of the summer riding season to celebrate
our common interests.
What does it cost?
Nothing, it’s free. There is no admission
charge to attend, and most expenses are
covered by donations from our sponsoring
Harley-Davidson Dealerships. Your only costs
are gas to ride there, any food not already
provided (see below), and a hotel if you come
down for a night or the entire weekend.
We always have a lot of events and fun
during this annual weekend. Friday night we
mingle with friends during a free barbeque
chicken dinner, a cornhole tournament, and
an evening social with a DJ. Saturday we
have several new local rides through the back
roads to choose from, a free lunch cookout,
and a field events competition. Saturday
night you have your choice between a social
at the hotel or you can take the free shuttle
into Ocean City.
How does it take place?
It is coordinated by a group representing the
eleven local H.O.G. Chapters. The work is
divided among those Chapters and their
members. If you would like to volunteer and
meet members from other Chapters, please
contact your Chapter Director. Or you can
just come and enjoy the event!
