Dear Friend,
As we look back on the accomplishments of 2007, there is nothing I am more proud of than
our presentation of Ken Burns’ film, The War. This PBS series was a fitting tribute to the
veterans who sacrificed so much to secure the freedoms we enjoy today. WXXI was also
proud to share the stories of many Rochester area veterans, as part of our local outreach
around The War.
Earlier this year WXXI was the presenting station for The Last Ridge, the history of the
10th Mountain Division stationed at Ft. Drum, New York. The Last Ridge was also a tribute
to WWII veterans, in particular the uncle of the producer Abbie Kealy, a founding member of
the 10th Mountain Division who was killed during the fighting in the rugged Italian hillside.
It is estimated that across the nation, WWII veterans are dying at the rate of 1,000 a day. It is appropriate that
public broadcasting helped to capture and share their stories… not to glorify war, but to remember why they fought,
why they sacrificed so much, and why we honor them today as “The Greatest Generation.”
2007 also marked the fourth season of Second Opinion, our national PBS health series (produced in partnership
with the University of Rochester Medical Center). This unique series, produced here in Rochester, is seen on more than
220 stations throughout the nation – and from the feedback we receive, we find that the program is reaching its goal of
encouraging viewers to take charge of their own health care.
With your support, WXXI helped students throughout New York State earn better grades by watching Homework
Hotline (and taking advantage of a terrific companion website designed in part by students at RIT). We helped adult
learners earn a high school diploma through GED Connection. We filled our studios for WXXI Voices lectures while
selling out our annual Speaking of Women’s Health Conference! We shared stories about the Power of Forgiveness,
while at the same time leading another Dialogue on Disabilities.
Arts and culture had a front row seat at WXXI during the year, with the new series OnStage highlighting the local music
scene and presenting the best local bands to the public. We presented, in High Definition, the best of last year’s Rochester
International Jazz Festival to the entire nation, and our cameras were back to capture the action at the 2007 festival.
What’s ahead for 2008? The André Rieu event into which so much planning has gone will culminate in his
concert here on May 19. The merging of our radio and television news divisions over the last year has yielded an even
more comprehensive news team that will be in full force in a pivotal 2008 election year. Our New York wine and food
series, Taste of New York, will premiere statewide this coming spring.
We will also celebrate another milestone in 2008, the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Rochester Area
Educational Television Association (RAETA.) It is fitting that the 50th anniversary of the founding of public broadcasting in
Rochester is the “transition year,” the last expected year of analog television as we prepare for digital TV. You’ll be hearing
a lot about the digital revolution next year, as we countdown to the end of analog television on February 17, 2009.
WXXI will be providing information over the next year on how the digital transition may affect you. The vast
majority of viewers, especially those who subscribe to cable, satellite or already have a digital set, are ready for the
transition – those who receive TV “over the air” may continue to do so with a converter box, a device that will be
available in 2008.
Consumer reports suggest that this holiday season may be the biggest to date for the sale of HDTV sets. If you
end up buying one, we’ll be here to help guide you through your digital transition while continuing to provide even more
of the quality programming you depend on.
And on behalf of all of us at WXXI, please accept my very best wishes for a happy, healthy holiday season – and a
wonderful New Year!
Best regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President & CEO

Q&A

WXXI Radio
Program Manager
Associate of the Year
WXXI presented Dr. Nancy Perkins Weyl
with the 2007 Associate of the Year Award
at the Associates’ Society dinner held at WXXI Studio A in late
October. More than one hundred WXXI supporters attended the
annual event with special guest speaker Dr. Peter Salgo, host of
WXXI’s nationally distributed medical series Second Opinion.
The Associate Award, which was established in 1987,
recognizes those individuals who have made significant contributions in support of WXXI, its broadcasts and operations. Dr.
Perkins Weyl, through her foundation—the Dr. Nancy Perkins
Charitable Foundation, supported the construction of WXXI’s FM
studio renovations. Specifically she dedicated “Simon’s window”
in the FM studio, and made a generous donation to support WXXIFM’s Music Library. Dr. Perkins Weyl also supported an innovative
collaboration between WXXI and the Commission Project, which
promotes music education in schools.
Dr. Perkins Weyl graduated from medical school at the
University of Virginia. She has her masters in Public Health
and has her Ph.D. in Political Science, concentrating in health
policy analysis, statistical methods, and political philosophy, with
an emphasis on ethics. She worked as the Associate Medical
Director of Blue Choice before leaving to form HealthChex, a
company that created a method of modifying comparable health
care services. HealthChex was later acquired by Equifax, Inc. Dr.
Perkins Weyl was also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Public
Policy at the University of Rochester. In 1998, she started the
Dr. Nancy Perkins Charitable Foundation, which supports organizations that serve neglected populations, or reaches a wide
segment of the community in which she lives.
To commemorate the 2007 Associate of the Year, a magnolia tree has been planted at Highland Park in honor of Dr. Perkins
Weyl’s dedication to WXXI. Dr. Perkins Weyl’s name has also
been inscribed on WXXI’s Associate of the Year plaque, which
includes the names of other WXXI friends including Ted Shepard,
Dick Eisenhart, B. Thomas Golisano, George M. Ewing, Sr. and Ed
Saphar. The plaque hangs outside WXXI’s studio.
Meet Michael Black. As Radio Program
Director he’s responsible for the overall supervision of WRUR-FM 88.5, including programming;
WXXI-AM programming; WXXI-HD programming;
including new programs, content and new
media initiatives.
Q. With iTunes, Internet streaming, and
podcasting, what kind of future do you think
radio has?
A. Radio is local, live, and pertinent when it’s
performing at its best. Portability of this function
is an advantage that Radio has over pre-recorded
devices and programs, such as Podcasts or
iPods, when the programming is live and local.
This could change with Wimax, but the deployment of this technology is being delayed or
canceled in many cities due to cost and technology issues. Radio does this now, and will
continue to do so, in a cost effective way, with
improved offerings and technology, such as the
implementation of HD Radio. We are just seeing
the tip of the iceberg of this new technology.
Q. What do you think separates public radio
from commercial radio?
A. The biggest difference is the mission and the
motivation. Most of commercial radio is geared
to entertain and make money. Public radio
may entertain, but other than to pay the bills,
the money issue is not the driving force. And
entertainment is not its only goal. Educating,
informing, and providing context to all that
surrounds us really is at the core of public
radio. The listener is a partner in the process
and many consider public radio as important to
them as water or air. You don’t hear that same
sentiment said about commercial radio.
Q. What are the last three songs you’ve
downloaded?
A. My last three songs purchased or downloaded were Alison Kraus & Robert Plant’s Gone,
Gone Gone, Rilo Kiley’s Silver Lining and We
Crawl by The Polyphonic Spree.
In the Neighborhood Year-end is a great time
for giving...when you
make a year-end outright
gift to WXXI, you aren’t
just giving money.
You’re perpetuating
your own values. You’re
saying “I see what
you’re doing for the
community, and I want
to make certain you
keep on doing it. Your
values are my values.”
The end of the calendar year, especially, marks the time when many
people think about making charitable gifts. If you itemize on your
income tax returns, you’re able to
deduct your charitable contributions during the past year. Then,
when you calculate your deductions
and the resulting tax savings, you
may discover that you can make
an even larger gift than you thought
possible.
Outright gifts can be given in
the form of cash or appreciated
stock. You can make a gift at any
time online at wxxi.org and click
the Make A Gift icon.
The December 31st deadline
is fast approaching to make an IRA
Rollover Gift directly to WXXI. If you
act immediately you may be able to
make a gift and avoid capital gains.
We appreciate all that you do
for WXXI all year long! You make
our community a better place to live.
Thank You!!
For more information on making
a special gift to WXXI, please

of Major and Planned Giving at

AUTUMN’S
HARVEST
The HIV/AIDS pandemic finds most of its victims among the world’s poor
and socially marginalized. The numbers are mind numbing. Africa has felt
the crushing weight of AIDS as its work force has been decimated and its
economic growth stalled. The American economy, as vast as it is, is not
immune to the pressure of global AIDS. To understand this challenge, to
begin to fashion a realistic AIDS public health policy, the United States must
face the needs of the weakest, least served. Here in our own backyard is
where we must confront AIDS, here with the working poor. The migrants
and day laborers that gather our food are the fertile ground of the American
AIDS epidemic.
Autumn’s Harvest explores the impact of AIDS on the migrant population, America’s food supply and the U.S. economy. Why has HIV found such
fertile ground in the migrant community? Who are they? What healthcare is
available to them? How is it accessed? Who has access? These are some of
the questions we, as a nation, must ask and answer.
AUTUMN’S HARVEST airs Thursday, December 13 at
9 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11).
Emmy award-winning documentary producer David Marshall, who makes
his home in Rochester, is the producer of Autumn’s Harvest. Marshall also
produced Hitching a Ride on the Great Lakes, which aired on WXXI-TV 21
(cable 11) in 2002.

8:00p Bill Moyers: Buying the War In the lead up
to the invasion of Iraq, the government’s claims
about weapons of mass destruction and terrorist
ties to Saddam Hussein went mostly unchallenged
by the media. Four years after “shock and awe,”
how the government sold the war has been much
examined, but a big question remains: how and
why did the press buy it? Bill Moyers and his team
piece together the reporting that shows how the
media were complicit in shaping the “public mind”
toward the war, and ask what’s happened to the
press’s role as skeptical “watchdog” over government power.

stars in a new production of one of the great 20th

newly founded city of Mahagonny, a city devoted to

and the Soviet MiG-15 fought this air campaign in
MiG Alley, a strip of airspace between the KoreanChinese border. 31 Sabre pilots are believed to have
survived crash landings in this spot, and evidence
suggests they were taken to Russian prisons. NOVA
follows the efforts of family members to find out
what happened to these pilots. D)))

Are you a NOVA fan?
Then you’ll want to be sure to check out
the new NOVA player on WXXI.org. WXXI is
pleased to be one of eight public television
stations across the country participating in this
pilot project that embeds an interactive broadband media player directly on its web site. The
NOVA player offers an automatically updated
menu of NOVA features, including previews
of upcoming shows, podcasts, and complete
episodes from the archive. The content it
features is updated weekly. So, check it out. Log
on to WXXI.org/education to see for yourself.
The pilot project is made possible through a grant from
