The monthly letter for GSC
students and their families
Volume X • May 2012 Issue
Dear Parents and Families:
What a wonderful school year it has been. The 2011-2012
academic school year was the sixth one for Pete and me since
coming to Glenville State College in the summer of 2006.
Each year seems to get busier and better. We truly enjoy
getting to know each and every student on our campus
and are happy to see the academic accomplishments made
during their time with us.
Janice Jo Bane, Mary Sue Bailey, and Gregory Arnott enter
the Jesse R. Lilly, Jr. Gymnasium for Commencement
We are so proud of the approximately 200 students who
completed their degree requirements and officially became
members of the GSC Class of 2012 during our 138th
commencement ceremony held on Saturday, May 5th.
Although Mother Nature provided us with rainy weather
that day, all of the smiles we saw that morning were like
rays of sunshine beaming from the faces of the graduates
and their family members. We have included the names
of all of this year’s graduates in this letter, so please take a
moment to find the name of your student or, if your child
hasn’t graduated yet, find one of their friends on the list.
We were honored to have our United States Senator Joe
Manchin with us as our commencement keynote speaker.
He offered many words of encouragement to our young
men and women who were donning caps and gowns at
the event. Pete presented Senator Manchin and one of our
West Virginia Senators, Doug Facemire, with honorary
doctorate degrees.

Pete also always looks forward to presenting three annual
awards at commencement. He and I both congratulate
GSC Associate Professor of Science Larry Baker who
received the Faculty Award of Excellence, GSC Graphic
Designer and Public Relations Department employee
Dustin Crutchfield for winning the Classified Employee of
the Year Award, and graduate Marlon Henry who earned
the Student Leadership Award.
We were so happy to meet many of the families who attended
the commencement festivities as well as the families who
attended some of our end-of-the-school year events. As
you know, at the end of every year several students are
recognized for their significant accomplishments. As part
of these yearend festivities we held two special events for
our outstanding scholars. The honors convocation award
recipients were honored this year on April 26th in the
Mollohan Campus Community Center Ballroom. We
then held an outdoor reception next to our home for our 30 honor graduates and their families on Thursday evening,
May 3rd. We are also sharing the names of these well-deserving students with you in this letter as well as several photos
from many of our recent celebrations.
A few weeks earlier, the Glenville State College Department of Business faculty and staff held an annual distinguished
business student event. Twenty-five students were recognized during this year’s luncheon which took place on April 10th.
While we are on the subject of our well-respected business department, we wanted to tell you about some good news
regarding twelve of our students from that same department. They represented GSC extremely well at the Future Business
Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) State Leadership Conference held in Morgantown, West Virginia
earlier this spring. They competed in business-related competitions, attended workshops, voted for state officers, and
networked with business professionals. This organization is the collegiate partner to the Future Business Leaders of
America organization that your child may have been involved in during high school.

GSC hasn’t had a Phi Beta Lambda chapter since 1979, and we
thank our Accounting Instructor Rebecca Swisher for her hard
work and dedication to organizing this group for our students. She
says she was thrilled it only took about five weeks for the students
to organize the chapter as well as prepare for and participate in the
competitions and workshops. Some of the students did so well at
the state conference that they will go on to the national FBLA-PBL
competitions in Texas in June. We, of course, wish them the best
of luck!
One of our chemistry professors, Dr. Kevin Evans, is also
representing Glenville State College

Glenville State College is well
represented on the WVAS executive
committee. Dr. Gary Morris, GSC
Assistant Professor of Biology and
Science and Mathematics Chair, is
currently serving as the organization’s
secretary.
If you attend GSC athletic events
at home or away from the campus,
you’ll notice a new person wearing
the buckskins and a coonskin hat
this fall. Congratulations to Niekoli
‘Nicco’ Mills, a sophomore from New
Cumberland,
West Virginia in
Hancock County.
He
was
just
chosen to be the
Glenville State
College Pioneer
Mascot for the
2012-2013 school
year. Nicco says
he always had a

School and now here at GSC, so he thought he would make
a great Pioneer. Apparently, the Pioneer selection committee
members thought so too. He says he is going to do everything
he can to motivate the students and fans at Pioneer athletic
contests and other GSC events later this year. Nicco knows
just how important fans and school spirit are to athletes.
That’s because he throws the discus, hammer, and shot put
as a member of our GSC Track and Field team.
In closing, we hope you and your family have a great summer.
If your travels bring you to the Glenville area (perhaps for the
annual West Virginia State Folk Festival) be sure to stop by
the college and say hello.
Until next time,
Pete and I at the Honor Graduates Reception
