An alumnus of Moorhead High School and Moorhead State University,
David began his teaching career in the Fargo Public Schools in the fall
of 1973. He began as an English and journalism teacher at Ben Franklin
Junior High, and in 2006 transferred to North to teach English.
David’s selection for Teacher of the Year was based on testimony from
North High that speaks of a teacher who loves his profession, and
makes students feel good about themselves regardless of who they are.
In order to engage his students, David spends countless hours preparing, researching, and
developing lessons. After 40 years in education, he continues to do what he can to improve and
prepare to make his lesson more alive and relevant to students. He listens to his stakeholders,
learns about their interests, finds areas of strengths and weaknesses, and tailors – differentiates
– lessons to fit their needs.
Known for his guidance after the lesson, David works daily after school allowing students
opportunities for a retake, extra help, and second chances. His goal is to let them learn, let them
show mastery. He does not believe in punishing students with an “F” or a “0,” but believes in
grades as they are intended, from the Latin root “gradus” meaning step, stage or degree. (It is a
derivative of the Latin verb “gradī” which means to go, step, or walk.) David allows students to
take steps to improve themselves, to walk towards understanding, and proficiency.
Recently a young lady who is taking German wanted to know something about what part of
speech “no” was in the sentence, “No bananas.” She had asked others, but had not received a
clear answer. She knew David was the one to approach. She did so; he pondered his answer, and
promised to get back to her. She knew he was a man of his word...she knew he would return
with an answer. The next day, David arrived in the Commons with several pages of information
he had researched on her behalf. Rather than handing over the answer she desired, he provided
her with an opportunity to discover it on her own to satisfy her own curiosity – to control her
own learning. She was thrilled with the information he produced, and went immediately to
read through the literature he provided her. Stories such as this involving David are regular
throughout the school year.
The Cynthia Thoresen Selland award for teaching recognizes an outstanding teacher in the Fargo Public
Schools and remembers Mrs. Selland’s 31 year teaching career at Agassiz, Ben Franklin and Fargo South.
This award is made by her children and grandchildren in recognition of her and all of
the teachers who touch lives forever.

Carney is one of 30 from across the nation selected to
participate in the DMAI’s 30 Under 30 program, developed to identify and foster
the talent of destination marketing organization professionals through increased
access to top-level networking and professional development. Additionally, Carney
will be honored when DMAI will host its annual convention in Orlando.
“DMAI is the industry leader and to be recognized by them is an honor,” Carney
said. “I hope to do Tacoma + Pierce County proud by continuing to work hard and
give back to our community.”
Carney has worked at the TRCVB for three years, planning events, working to
develop community programs and building a positive visitor experience to ensure
repeat business. Recently named to the director of visitor experience post, Carney
has continued to kickstart community programs like the Safe Lodging program, a
collaborative effort with the Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking Alliance and
local hotels. The program will put best practices in place aimed to eliminate sex
trafficking in Pierce County.
“It is no surprise that Marcus Carney was
presented with this distinction by DMAI, as
he is an ideal ambassador for Tacoma + Pierce
County tourism,” said Bennish Brown, TRCVB
president and CEO. “For his age, I find him to
be one of the most focused individuals I have
ever met as it relates to immersing himself in
the total picture of travel and tourism. He is
not only a practitioner who shows up daily to
do his best to recruit and engage visitors, but
he is a visionary who is always looking at our
organization and industry from the
30,000-foot level.”

John Klocke, Fargo North, 1976
Steven Wroe, Fargo Central, 1960
John J. Klocke was named director of
development for the Mayville State
University Foundation and leads
efforts to connect with Mayville
State Alum as well as and overseeing
fundraising and development efforts.
My high school days were dominated
by my activities as a guitar picker
with my rock & roll band, “The
Furys”, which made for a good living
and very interesting times, while I
attended NDSU.
John has 20+ years as a professional fundraiser, sings
around the nation for corporate events, is also a
professional musical entertainer and has been the
emcee for the Class of 1976 reunions since graduation.
After that came law school, a year in a Nigerian
university and law practice in New York and Los
Angeles before departing for Costa Rica on a
fellowship. Supposedly, that was to be a relatively
short term project, but, well, here I still am.
John also recently recorded his first musical CD of
Sinatra and other Crooners which is available at
www.johnnyjay.net or www.cdbaby.com/cd/johnnyjay.
Kari Douglas (McBain), Fargo South 1989
I married Matthew Douglas and we currently share
a home in Brooklyn Center,
MN. I went back to school and
graduated with a para educator
degree from Century College
in White Bear Lake, MN May of
2013.
I am looking forward to building
relationships with students and guiding them through
their educational careers. I currently care for clients
with disabilities. My purpose in life is to have a heart
for people.
Now I spend my time with the law firm I helped found
back in the 1970s, and in dealing with the problems of
beachfront property owners. And from time to time,
still pickin’ guitar!
