W
elcome to the first edition of the Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations annual stewardship report. Thanks to your generous
support, 2011 was another remarkable year. As an investor in our success, it’s important that you know the impact your philanthropy
has on Meridian Health. In addition to recognizing our donors, we hope you will gain some valuable insight from this publication on
how your dollars were put to work to advance your hospital’s vision of providing the best health care experience in your community.
Over the past year, there have been many exciting developments taking place and thanks to strong leadership and new members, our
boards are more vibrant than ever. While continuing to be a leader in cardiac care for our region, Jersey Shore University Medical Center
is expanding K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital to accommodate the growing number of young patients and their families. Bayshore
Community Hospital is also currently focused on the needs of young patients through the creation of the Pediatric Care Center, a
dedicated space in the existing Emergency Department.
Riverview Medical Center is on it’s way to becoming a premier center for surgical excellence in our region with the addition
of state-of-the-art surgical suites and an education and conference center that will attract superior medical professionals.
Ocean Medical Center and Southern Ocean Medical Center are also expanding and will each soon have new and larger
Emergency Departments equipped with the latest technology to provide their growing communities with the most
advanced emergency care. As always, Meridian at Home Hospice is making great strides, advancing technology at the patient bedside to make care coordination even easier.
As Meridian grows to meet tomorrow’s needs and the expectations of this growing region, we are acutely
aware that these advancements and developments would not be possible without the extraordinary
support we receive from you, our donor family. Your investment has a direct impact on the lives of
so many and our success is credited to the generous spirit of our extended Meridian family. It is a

hanks to the dedication and generosity of our donor family,
2011 was an extraordinarily successful year for Jersey Shore
University Medical Center Foundation. Through your
philanthropic gifts, we are able to provide support to ensure the very
best health care experience is available to so many in our region.
We are proud to report that in the past year, we have secured
grants to expand our Family Health Center and our dental
clinic program, both of which reach out to the members of our
community most at risk. The Foundation also hosted our most
successful golf outing to date, another record-breaking Sweetheart
Ball and other successful events that brought significant funding to
key areas such as oncology, cardiology and pediatrics. Thanks to
your commitment, Jersey Shore continues to be a leader in cardiac
care, focused currently on expanding the Cardiac Thoracic Intensive
Care Unit (CTICU) to better serve you. The Foundation also continues
to provide funding to outfit our oncology unit with the most
advanced technology and more educational resources for
patients and families making critical life decisions.
In 2011, a number of local families became involved at
K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, volunteering their time and
making philanthropic gifts. Many of these gifts provided extras to
compliment medical care, including rocking chairs, video games
and art supplies. As we move through 2012, you will see and hear
about exciting developments for children as we begin a $5 million
campaign to create more private rooms and services for our
youngest patients.
With your continued commitment and the introduction of our
new foundation board chair, Peter J. Cancro, we expect 2012 to be
a pivotal year. A trustee for the last seven years, Peter is a business
leader in our community who is passionate about Jersey Shore
and the children’s hospital. Jersey Shore University Medical Center
Foundation never forgets that it is your charitable kindness that
allows us to support programs and services for a healthy

Jersey Shore University Medical Center gave Skip Bariscillo a second chance. A traumatic
accident left him with countless medical emergencies including major spinal injuries,
a depressed skull fracture, and traumatic amputation of his left hand. Six years later,
he is the proud father of a 4-year-old daughter.
Your generosity really does make a difference, providing
the philanthropic commitment to support outstanding care,
resulting in so many positive patient outcomes like Skip’s.

Highlights
With a record breaking crowd, the Fourteenth Annual
Sweetheart Ball raised more than $200,000 in 2011. This
impressive number was recently surpassed by the successful
2012 event which netted nearly $280,000 to support cancer
programs and services at Jersey Shore University Medical
Center. Both years the event was co-chaired by Dr. Ken
and Ann Nahum and Phil and Marilyn Perricone. In 2011,
Gina Petillo was honored with the William C. Black Award
of Hope and this year it went to John and Kathy Weiland,
all for their generous contributions to the hospital.

Yesterday’s Best Thrift Shoppe. Thrift shop sales, coupled with annual
events including their fall luncheon, garden party, card party and
Lavender and Lace event provided support in 2011 for the oncology
department and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The Federation
also purchased interactive televisions for high risk mothers-to-be on
bed rest at Jersey Shore.

A significant increase of 7% over the
prior year, 30% of our staff made
a financial commitment. This translated
to nearly $80,000 pledged in
support of a variety of departments,
scholarships and programs at Jersey
Shore University Medical Center.

The fashionably chic “Runway on the River” fundraising
event captured the attention of guests and raised more
than $90,000, nearly half of which was designated for
pediatric cribs to be used in the soon-to-be expanded
patient unit. The 2011 event to benefit K. Hovnanian
Children’s Hospital, was co-chaired by Larson Whelan
and Sorca Gill, with Lucy Kalian, Maureen Lloyd and
Anita Roselle serving as honorary co-chairs.
Under the direction of first time event chair, Peter Cancro,
founder and CEO of Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems, the 28th
Annual Sports Classic raised a record-breaking $247,000 to
benefit Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Held at Deal
Golf & Country Club, more than 165 golfers attended this
successful outing. Jersey Shore University Medical Center
Foundation also hosted its 22nd Annual Open Heart Invitational
at the prestigious Metedeconk National Golf Club in Jackson.
The outing, chaired by Terry McCarty of TDBank, attracted 118
golfers for a day on the greens and raised over $80,000 for
cardiovascular services.

Two generous families each made
$100,000 commitments to Jersey Shore
University Medical Center in appreciation
of the outstanding health care provided
to the community at Jersey Shore
University Medical Center. The Gindi
family of Deal made their gift in honor
of a family member who was treated on
several occasions at JSUMC. Long-time
donor Fletcher Creamer of Spring Lake
made his largest gift to date, also in
honor of the care he and his family
has received at Jersey Shore.
The Ryan Andrew Kaiser Memorial
Foundation (RAKMF) provided a gift
and a challenge grant to raise funds
for the Ryan Andrew Kaiser Pediatric
Comfort Fund. We thank RAKMF
Foundation for their continued support
of the fund which provides small
comforts, such as stuffed toys, pajamas
and toiletries, to young patients and
their families during unplanned
hospital stays.
Thank you to the Marrus Family of
Rumson for their $25,000 gift to the
Child Evaluation Center at K. Hovnanian
Children’s Hospital. This generous
contribution specifically supports the
KIDDS program designated to provide
comprehensive care to children with
autism. The program is located in the newly
renovated KHCH specialty care center.
Philanthropic support is vitally important to helping Meridian Health provide the most

The Fourteenth Annual Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations’
Gala, “A Celebration of Caring,” was held on November 19 at
a new venue, The MAC at Monmouth University in West Long
Branch, raising nearly $600,000 for the hospitals of Meridian
Health. A record sold out crowd of over 800 guests attended

Meridian Health Received System-Wide Grants in 2011 from…
• The NJ Department of Health and Senior Services provided $149,000 in funding to Meridian Health under the Regional
Emergency Preparedness Program, which provides resources and increased coordination among health care facilities in
the event of a major disaster.
• Cardinal Health awarded Meridian Health a $35,000 grant to implement an Operating Room (OR) Checklist in order to
strengthen the culture of safety and reduce turnaround times for OR procedures.
• T
he Walter and Louise Sutcliffe Foundation awarded $20,000 to Meridian Health to support the OFFER Program which
provides support to non-traditional students in nursing pre-requisite courses and formal nursing programs.
• The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, NJ Nursing Initiative, provided a $9,980 grant to Meridian Health and
Georgian Court University to pilot the SHARES program to support inter-professional clinical nursing education through
simulation-based experiential learning modalities.

Future Focus
It takes the generosity of the entire community to provide the
philanthropic support necessary to advance and enhance Jersey
Shore University Medical Center. In addition to the pediatric
expansion you will read more about on the next page, our 2012
priority areas for funding are:
Cardiac Thoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU)
Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation plans
to raise $2 million to support the building of a new CTICU
on the 2nd Floor of the Diagnostics and Testing Building
adjacent to the Kurr Atrium. With 12 private rooms and two
nurse’s stations, the space will offer the latest in care for
patients and is located below the operating rooms with its
own designated elevator for transport post operatively.
Inpatient Oncology Unit
Plans are underway for a new Inpatient Oncology Unit to be
designed and built on the 4th Floor of the Northwest Pavilion.
A total of 36 new private rooms will be built in three neighborhoods
with a nurse’s station and 12 beds in each to care for our cancer
patients. The JSUMC Foundation is seeking support of $4 million
to fund this project and the moving of this oncology unit from its
current location within the hospital.
Grants Highlights
•The NJ Department of Health and Senior Services awarded a
$214,660 grant to Jersey Shore’s Child Evaluation Center for a
Newborn Hearing Screening Program.
•Ocean First Foundation awarded $150,000 to Jersey Shore University
Medical Center’s Rehabiliation Department and $30,000 for pediatric
rehabilitation services at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. The grants
will allow for needed expansion of services to meet growing
patient demand.
•JSUMC received more than $80,000 in grant funding to support
the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Dental Clinic from
Philadelphia Foundation, Danellie Foundation, Delta Dental of
NJ Foundation and TD Charitable Foundation.
•Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded a $47,028 grant to Jersey
Shore Medical Center to establish the Every Woman Counts program,
a breast health and screening mammogram education program for
low-income women.
•Starlight Children’s Foundation provided a $15,600 grant to support
the Child Life Program’s Integrated Media Therapy Program, which
brings music therapy combined with technology advances to
hospitalized children.
•The George Link Jr. Charitable Trust awarded a $15,000 grant to
K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital to support their upcoming
expansion project.

Pediatric
Campaign
Growing for our Kids
Since its state designation in 2005, K. Hovnanian
Children’s Hospital has grown tremendously with
more than 35,000 patients entering the doors each
year to receive the most advanced pediatric care in the
region. As the heart of the Meridian Pediatric network,
K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital has experienced a
significant volume increase in pediatric acute, intensive
and emergency care. To keep up with this high demand,
physical expansion of the facility is a necessity.
In 2010, as part of our Transforming Care project, a
state-of-the-art Pediatric Emergency Department was
opened, which includes nine examination rooms,
its own radiology service, a team of pediatric
physicians, nurses and support personnel dedicated
to the care of children.
Looking to the future in anticipation of continued increases in the number of
pediatric patients we serve, K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital is focusing on three
critical areas in 2012 - further expansion to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit,
the addition of a second Acute Care Pediatric Unit and the creation of a 25,000
square foot Pediatric Specialty Care Center. These new facilities are vital to K.
Hovnanian Children’s Hospital and with the help of donor support this hospital
will remain the regional leader in advanced pediatric care.

Acute Care Unit
Kenneth W. & Leslie Hitchner III, of Rumson, have generously donated $200,000 in support of the Pediatric Intensive
Care Unit (PICU). This gift is an important first step towards
the launch of the Pediatric Expansion Campaign, which aims
to create 14 new private rooms, four PICU beds and a new
home for the pediatric outpatient program with offices for
specialty medical and dental services. In recognition of the
Hitchner’s philanthropic commitment, the new PICU area
will be named the Ken & Leslie Hitchner PICU Neighborhood.
K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital staff gave the Mulvaney
family a miracle when Mary Catherine was born weighing
just 1.78 pounds. Nearly 2 years after spending 65 days in
the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Mary Catherine is
a healthy, happy, 2-year-old girl and her family is thankful
every day. In honor of their granddaughter, Gene and Judy
Mulvaney continued their loyal support with a generous
pledge to the pediatric expansion project, with the hope
that even more children will receive life-saving health care
close to home when they need it most.
