IN 2008 CURTIS UNVEILED an ambitious strategic
plan that would help bring the school firmly into
the 21st century. The plan’s bold priorities were
designed to position Curtis as the ultimate destination
for young musicians seeking performance careers at
the highest level. Achieving these goals would require
unprecedented levels of support from all corners.
Thanks to you, we succeeded.
Over the past five years—aided by the
overwhelming generosity of thousands of Curtis
supporters, including trustees, overseers, alumni,
parents, Friends of Curtis, foundations, corporations,
and government sources—we thoughtfully and
aggressively addressed every facet of the plan.
During this time, we became our own toughest critics,
examining every aspect of our students’ experience:
from faculty and program development to facilities
and infrastructure; from student services and
residential life to experiential learning opportunities;
from admissions to student performance standards.
Our goal was to raise $155 million in philanthropic
support for the plan by June 1, 2013. This was the most
ambitious funding initiative in the school’s history.
The Curtis community responded in extraordinary
fashion, ultimately exceeding our goal and raising
nearly $158.5 million. Our trustees led the way, with
100 percent participation, while other friends and
supporters of all kinds played significant roles as well.
Our campus now looks different. Anchored by
the historic main building at 1726 Locust Street,
Curtis stretches two blocks east to the state-of-the-art
Lenfest Hall. In addition, successful completion of
the strategic plan brought curricular enhancements,
new faculty and programs, and technology initiatives
that challenged our students to consider inventing
their careers in wholly original ways that we couldn’t
have conceived of even five years ago.
But what is decidedly unchanged is this:
Music-making of the highest caliber remains Curtis’s
defining factor of admission and the uniting force
in our “learn by doing” philosophy. It provides the
foundation that allows Curtis graduates to become
artist-citizen ambassadors in the most revered musical
organizations around the globe and eager participants
in today’s most innovative musical ventures.
We invite you to read on and explore the
accomplishments of this strategic plan, and we
hope you will join us in celebrating the role you have
played in bringing Curtis to this moment. With your
partnership, we stand poised to envision an even
brighter future in preparation for the school’s
100th anniversary in 2024—a future we are already
beginning to imagine and define through a new
strategic planning process.
The new strategic direction will ensure that Curtis
will remain tuition-free and will address how we
sustain the transformative new programs established
with seed funding during the past five years.
It will also address how we will maintain our position
at the leading edge of conservatories worldwide,
with the resources and curriculum that allow our
students to adapt to the unique opportunities and
considerable challenges of today’s artistic climate.
These are important issues for the future of Curtis
that we will address in the coming months and years.
But today we celebrate our shared successes.
We are truly humbled by your passion and support
for the school, its proud traditions, and its bright

CURTIS RECRUITS AND NURTURES the most
exceptional student musicians from around the
world—and provides each a full-tuition merit
scholarship to allow unparalleled focus on their
development in a personally tailored environment.
This is the core of a Curtis education. Over the
five years of the strategic plan Curtis introduced
a host of distinctive programs to amplify the student
experience at every age—from 11 to 28—while
prudent allocation of resources extended the school’s
financial safety net beyond tuition. Generous
contributions for the building of Lenfest Hall made
possible an entirely new era in student life and campus
culture. And Curtis students are thriving as a result.

TO REMAIN THE FIRST-CHOICE destination for young
musicians worldwide, Curtis must continue to attract
and retain pre-eminent faculty. The strategic plan
prioritized the pursuit of funding to bolster the
school’s remarkable faculty legacy of artist performers,
as well as leaders in liberal arts and musical studies.
This focus—and a generous challenge from
H. F. “Gerry” and Marguerite Lenfest—inspired
extraordinary philanthropic results from Curtis
supporters: Over $37 million was raised for faculty
support, more than doubling the school’s number
of endowed chairs. In turn, Curtis recruited fourteen
new faculty members over the past five years, an
infusion of world-class talent representing 15 percent
of the current faculty.

Challenge and received other gifts to endow
faculty chairs, raising $34 million in endowment

Cellist Gabriel Cabezas (’13)
arrived at Curtis at age
sixteen to study with new
faculty member Carter Brey,
principal cello of the New York
Philharmonic, who was ultimately named the
Nina and Billy Albert Chair in Cello Studies to
conclude the Lenfest Faculty Challenge in 2012.
In addition to his lessons with Mr. Brey, Gabriel
kept busy at Curtis—serving as principal cello
in the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, performing
nationally and internationally with Curtis On
Tour, and winning the top prize in the acclaimed
Sphinx Competition. The 2013–14 season brings
his subscription debut as a soloist with the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra in his native city.

for the first time.
OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS the school unleashed
an unprecedented array of new programs that are
deepening and integrating the Curtis education.
“Learning by doing” increasingly occurs outside of
the traditional studio or classroom. Whether through
a community artist program (cap) project that engages
schoolchildren, by performing in front of a new
audience every day on tour, or in collaboration with
over fifteen partnering organizations in and around
Philadelphia, students are benefiting from the strategic
plan’s emphasis on creating inventive new curricular
initiatives. While preserving nearly 90 years of
tradition in long-established disciplines like piano,
strings, and vocal studies, new philanthropic support
allowed Curtis to expand its programs of study for the
first time in decades, with newly designed programs
for guitar and string quartet, a revamped conducting
program, and revitalized course offerings in liberal
arts and musical studies. A more dynamic student
body—better equipped for careers as 21st-century
musicians—is emerging as a result.

curriculum in response to multi-year, comprehensive curricular review

Tenor Joshua Stewart (’10, ’12)
spent seven years at Curtis,
graduating with bachelor’s
and master’s degrees, three
collaborations with Opera
Philadelphia, and 24 roles with the Curtis
Opera Theatre under his belt. A day after his
graduation, Joshua traveled to Europe with
classmates for concerts with Curtis On Tour
in Germany, Italy, and Spain. The New Orleans
native is currently a member of the Bavarian
State Opera Studio in Munich.

of the strategic plan allowed Curtis to spearhead a
school-wide facilities renaissance. New construction
more than doubled the size of the campus while
setting in motion the renovation, restoration,
restacking, and repurposing of all of the school’s
beloved historic buildings. The 2011 opening
of Lenfest Hall—made possible through the
extraordinary $30 million Lenfest Challenge and
support from all branches of the Curtis family—
represented the first major campus expansion in
more than 20 years. The most visible symbol of the
school’s five-year campus resurgence, Lenfest Hall
offers vibrant new spaces for community-building
as well as music-making, while housing half of the
student body. The latest addition to the campus,
the Rubinstein Centre, consolidates many staff offices
and has eliminated the need to rent administrative
office space. A spacious and welcoming Curtis
now hums with activity around the clock along
Locust Street.

Symphony Orchestra during

Lenfest Hall, Zoë spoke at the building’s
opening in September 2011. “I, for one, can’t
wait to see how living together in Lenfest Hall
will shape how we students create music
together in orchestra, chamber music,

On Tour may be the school’s best-known strategic
global initiative, it is just one of many ways of broadly
sharing the Curtis experience beyond Philadelphia.
Improving all aspects of the school’s infrastructure
was critical to increasing its global reach. Guided by
strategic plan priorities, Curtis modernized aging
information technology systems, then invested in
multi-faceted digital media capabilities and audiovisual platforms to reach a larger worldwide audience.
Our opportunistic and entrepreneurial response to
trends has enabled us to move forward. These
initiatives were funded largely from our operating
budget—which remained balanced throughout the
period of the plan—as a wealth of opportunities
outpaced our fundraising goals. These improvements
to the Curtis infrastructure enhance and differentiate
the student experience, while engaging thousands
of friends and patrons more deeply, more often,
and for years to come.

Like his brother Andrew and sister Ashley,
also Curtis students, Daniel is a pianist who
performs often on the Student Recital Series.
He is also a regular presence in the FieldMcFadden Audio-Visual Arts Department,
as one of the first students to enroll in Curtis’s
new Music and Technology course. Daniel’s
work offstage can frequently be seen on the
Curtis1 channel of Curtis Performs.

is an indispensable cornerstone
of Curtis philanthropy. While endowment income
provides more than half of the Curtis operating
budget, a significant proportion of the budget—
25 percent—comes from annual fund contributions
from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Over the past five years, annual fund donations
from Leopold Stokowski Society members, Friends
of Curtis, Crescendo Club members, and Curtis
Corporate Partners generated nearly $16 million—
10 percent of total philanthropy raised in support of
the strategic plan. The historic level of the annual
fund at the conclusion of the strategic plan symbolizes
a commitment from the entire Curtis community to
preserving the school’s storied traditions and to paving
the way for continued invention and innovation as
Curtis approaches its centennial.
