On this day, we celebrate Jesus under the appearance of bread and wine.
This Blessed Sacrament is the most precious gift Jesus left us –
HIMSELF! What an amazing honor it is to have Jesus actually in our
presence every day. When the sanctuary lamp is lit in Catholic
churches, it signals that the Blessed Sacrament is in the tabernacle.
This Monday, May 29th, Americans celebrate Memorial Day.

Memorial Day, which was originally called Decoration Day for
decorating graves with flowers, is to honor the memory of the people
who gave their lives for our country while serving in the Armed Forces.
Finally, this past Monday, May 23rd, I celebrated my 50th anniversary as
an R.N. Nothing in my seminary training was more helpful than my
years as an R.N., especially those spent in psychosocial areas of nursing.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
- Father Bob

Around the Area
Carolina Catholic
For its second May show, Carolina Catholic's host, Judi Paparozzi,
and fellow film buff and St. Therese parishioner, Tom Lewis, share
their mutual love of the cinema and bring you their top 20 best Catholic movies. Tom's list includes such classics as On the Waterfront,
Angels with Dirty Faces, The Cinderella Man, I Confess, The Cardinal, The Scarlet and the Black, Come to the Stable, and other movies
that have deep Christian symbolism. Judi's list is a bit more of the
traditional religious movies like The Song of Bernadette, The Robe,
King of Kings, Miracle of Our Lady at Fatima, Ben Hur, and others
that impacted her faith deeply. Tom and Judi explore the casts, the
plots, the key scenes, and the values that each movie brings to life on
the big screen, and all of these movies have proven good viewing for
the whole family.
This show will air on Wilmington Catholic Radio on stations 91.7 FM,
93.1FM, and 103.1 FM on Saturday, May 28th, at 11 a.m. and Sunday,

Jesus takes care of our hunger and thirst. Years ago I remember
Monsignor Hadden asking us, “Why do we come each week to the
Table?” We come to be fed but it doesn’t stop there. We are fed and
therefore we are called to go out and feed others.
At the Tileston Outreach feeding others is one of the largest ministries of
our program. Each day as we distribute food bags to dozens of our
guests. Many volunteers give of their time and energy getting the food
to us: 20+ picking up food at the Food Lion three times a week, Apple
Annies 2x daily and Atlanta Bread once and then carry it down the stairs
as five to six people packaging it each day and arranging it on the
shelves;. Some members of the Gospel Choir prepare 10-12 meals on a
regular basis to feed the elderly on Saturday and Sundays, and others
give up their Saturday mornings to deliver it. The K of C members
stand outside grocery stores asking for food every five to six weeks;
shoppers prepare diabetic meals; while the parishioners and school
children donate canned goods on a regular basis. The feeding of the
hungry goes on and on and there are many individual projects and
donations that give food and funds for the program.. The Community of
St. Mary’s lives its motto” serve God by serving others.”
This past week the Catherine Kennedy Foundation gave us funds to
assist our elders when they are in crisis. Also our very young get
involved as well, as First Graders Holladay Stovall and Eva Dattilo and
second grader Mary Ryan Campbell share weeks of Art work to benefit
the Outreach
Let’s look into our hearts to see how we are sharing God’s love with
others.
Special Need for the Week:
We are looking into purchasing nutritious drinks, such as boost and
ensure for those who are fragile and in need of this type of supplement. A bottle or two will help us launch this new venture.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Once the early Christians realized that Christ’s coming in glory
was delayed, there was a need to provide for the governance and everyday needs of the church. The various “orders” within the church
carried forward the apostles’ ministry, but also allowed for a measure
of creativity. The sacrament we call “holy orders” evolved somewhat
slowly. At first, it made sense for Christians to use the forms they
knew, adapting them to new situations. Synagogues, for example, were
administered by a board of “elders,” translated into Greek as presbyteros. We know from the Acts of the Apostles that a system of presbyters was a normal feature of church life from earliest days. They
stood in relationship to another order, that of “overseers,” translated
into Greek as episkopos, giving us the English “bishops.” The bishop
was the shepherd, the faithful tender of the flock, one who offered the
Eucharist, forgave sins, and maintained the bond of charity. Just as the
deacons were the chief advisers for the charitable life of the church, so
were the presbyters meant to advise the bishop on the spiritual life of
the faithful. They were trusted advisers at first, not pastors or priests as
we understand those terms today.

Fr. Gustavo in Malicre
Here we see Fr. Gustavo in front of the church of Our Lady of Suyapa
in a very remote mountain village called Malicre. This was his first
visit to the church, just one of the 87 churches of our sister parish.

Oh what a night! The Dancing with the
Wilmington Stars night was a success in so
many ways. The dancers were terrific, the food
was great, and the people attending were most delightful. The atmosphere in the room was happy and electric. Thank you to the
ladies who chaired the event - Sydney Penny and Serena Lau. They
put this event together within just a couple of months and did a
spectacular job with their committee. The DWTWS committee
members to thank are Christine Bos, JoAnn Daley, Sara Burroughs,
and Megan James. We will be able to announce the proceeds of the
event at the Spring Concerts next week. Please check out pictures
and the video of Mr. Viollis' dance on our Facebook page.
Athletes and Coaches Recognized - All of our athletes of the
school year were honored at the Athletic Banquet last Wednesday
evening in the Upper Room. The Booster Club presented pieces of
the historic gym floor to each of the athletes along with the pins
recognizing their team sport. We are blessed to have so many wonderful volunteer coaches sharing their gifts with our students.
Congratulations to Abby Billings (7th grade) Abby is one of our
Duke Talent Search students. Seventh graders qualify for this honor
based on their high standardized test scores from 5th and 6th
grades. These students are invited to take ACT or SAT college
entrance exams. Abby's scores qualified her to be recognized at
state level at ECU.
Theater - Last week our kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders walked
to the theater to see a performance of "Aesop’s Fables". I heard
rave reviews.
