This national holiday, always celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of May, celebrates the vocation of motherhood. Congratulations to all mothers and mother-tobe! Thank you for all the work you do for your children and those you love! Have a wonderful day! On this day, we also celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. In today’s selection from the Gospel of Luke, we read: “Then he led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them. As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven. They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and they were continually in the temple praising God” (Luke 24: 50-53). Though the disciples initially thought this would be bad news, Jesus assured them that it was indeed good news, for he had to go to heaven to send down the Holy Spirit to be with them. From the Office of the Bishop May 8, 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Each year, the Diocese of Raleigh takes up a special collection for the national Catholic Communication Campaign. This collection, which will take place the weekend of May 7-8, is one way we can help spread the Gospel through new media tools and digital networks. Half of the money received through the Catholic Communication Campaign remains in the Diocese of Raleigh and allows for continued growth and cutting-edge use of new technology to help inspire, educate, and inform the faithful. We place Lenten and Advent messages on TV and radio, work with the news media in promoting the Good News, and publish NC Catholics magazine. Our media efforts also reach out to those not familiar with the Catholic faith. Some of our best known videos and podcasts include "Raleigh to Rome," a weekly news brief on local and global Catholics news; "Catholic Life," which features interviews with fascinating people about important topics and their personal faith stories; and "La Voz Catolica," a weekly Spanish-language podcast dedicated to serving the Hispanic communities around the Diocese. To learn more about these videos and podcasts, go to DioceseofRaleigh.orgNideos or search "Diocese of Raleigh" on iTunes or YouTube. The other half of the funds collected are sent to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to be used for promoting national communications initiatives including live stream coverage of the Holy Father and more. Please know of my gratitude for your support for this important initiative and all the evangelization efforts in our Diocese. Sincerely in Christ, Michael F. Burbidge Most Reverend Michael F. Sister Isaac—Office of Social Ministry Ascension of the Lord St. Mary Social Ministry/Tileston Outreach We are getting ever so closer to the great feast of Pentecost! The readings from the Acts of the Apostles that recount the beginnings of our Church and the words of Jesus as reported in John’s account of the Last Supper continue to nourish our spirits. This past Thursday we celebrated the feast of the Ascension which in some dioceses is celebrated today. I really liked the way our “Little White Book” played on the word presence. True, Jesus is ascending to the Father, but his presence, His Spirit, is always with us. Jesus prays for us – for us, at His last supper and He reminds His Father that we are gifts and we are receiving the very same love that the Father pours out on Jesus. That is very, very powerful. That is one of the reasons why Stephen, the first martyr for the faith, is able to accept death and asks forgiveness for those who are killing him. This is our History and that is just one of the reasons why Pope Francis has called for this Year of Mercy. Our heritage is that of men and women living the spiritual and corporal works of mercy each day. Each one of us is called to be the presence of Jesus to those we meet each day and when I live mercy I am responding to Jesus’ prayer that we all may be one. Special Need for the Week: Thank you so much for the great support given to our Yard Sale. It was the best ever! We raised over $3,800 and that will definitely help us continue our program of providing home furnishings and appliances to those in need. If you have any garden utensils that are not being used, we would be happy to have them. A good number of our people do “odd yard jobs” to supplement their income. RCIA This weekend we held our final session, looking at various ways we can become active in serving our brothers and sisters. The 2016-2017 program will begin in late September. If you are interested in RCIA contact wither John Walsh or Sister Isaac at 762-5491 x135. Price "Let your light so shine..." Matthew 5:16 I hope that your children enjoyed our annual Field Day. I am sorry to have missed this event as I was in Raleigh for the final principals' meeting of the year. Thank you to Mrs. Parker and the 8th grade students for planning and leading this event. An extra treat of Granny's Ice Cream truck was provided by Mrs. Letson and H.S.A. I'm sure that was a great surprise for all. Great News—Our Varsity Science Olympiad Team (23 students in grades 6-8), coached by Mrs. Brown, were one of 50 school teams statewide that were invited to compete in the State Science Olympiad Competition. The results were exceptional! The team placed 6th out of 50 teams statewide! They are the top scoring Catholic school in the state! Congratulations to the members of the team and Mrs. Brown! Thanks to all of the parents and Mr. Hogan who have volunteered to assist Mrs. Brown throughout the year. Lions Club Vision Screening - We thank the local Lions Club volunteers who visited St. Mary School to offer a free vision screening to the students in grades 1-3. Screening results were sent home to parents. Book Fair and 8th Grade Pizza Supper—Thank you to Mrs. Pafford and all the parent volunteers who helped with the Spring Book Fair. Profits from this fair help to supply new books for our main library and individual class libraries. Thank you to all who came out for supper on Wednesday evening. Our 8th graders did a great job greeting and serving. The 8th grade parents and students work this event in order to raise money for the end of year 8th grade trip to Camp Don Lee. We thank you for supporting their event. Dancing with the Stars—Our dancers are busy practicing their routines and I look forward to this event being sold out. The way our school will make a profit will be by people voting at the event or online. Each vote costs $10. Tickets are now available. I hope that many of you will come out for a very entertaining and fun evening. Bring your friends to our beautiful Upper Room for this event which will benefit the school's educational programs. Auction items will also be included. This is H.S.A.'s main fundraiser of the year, so I hope to see you there.
