Half-Halt - Southeast Virginia Dressage Association
Half-Halt The Newsletter for the Southeastern Chapter of the Virginia Dressage Association Volume Number 19 Issue Number 5 May 2005 MUSICAL FREESTYLE CLINIC WITH TIGGER MONTAGUE Submitted by Kathy Rowse SVDA has been planning on a musical freestyle clinic with Tigger since last year and we were thrilled to have such a beautiful day for her clinic at Silverleaf Farm. The morning started with an hour lecture on how to select music, tips on making interesting choreography and then the ins and outs of editing. The editing especially sounded very complicated to all the auditors, when Tigger explained how she does it in a professional studio. In a recent 3rd level freestyle Tigger noted that she made a total of 33 edits so that all the musical phrasing flowed together smoothly. Next we moved to the live demonstrations where Tigger worked with several sets of horse/rider combinations to find music that suited each horses’ gaits and also enhanced the movement of each horse. Several different types of horses made for good “compare and contrast” subjects. A discussion ensued about whether the beat of the music should match exactly with the footfalls of the horse. Theoretically this would be perfect. In reality, the tempo of almost every horse will vary to some degree from day to day and even from movement to movement. You have different tempos in different types of footing. If you match the beat exactly on any given day, then when horse is a bit slower or faster – it is overly obvious that the music does not match the beat of the horse any longer. She suggested that in choosing music – try to find the beat that suggests the gait of the horse and also tends to lift the horse up to be lighter and livelier. This point was also illustrated by one of the demo horses who got a bit slower in the tempo as they did lateral work. In the afternoon 4 completed freestyles were presented as well as a really fun Pas de Deux with Tristin Hardy and Sandy Johnson. Tigger made suggestions on changes of music and choreography to enhance each horse. The audience could really appreciate some of the different suggestions that she made, especially with music. She also advised riders that while you want to make your choreography difficult enough to show some risk factor – you don’t want to make it so difficult that your horse loses balance easily and makes many technical mistakes. In several instances she simplified choreography so that the horse was more successful technically and showed better flowing movements. She also advised that you don’t want to repeat your technical requirements more See Page 3 For More on Tigger Clinic The annual membership publication for SVDA (www.gosvda.org ) a chapter of the Virginia Dressage Association VADA is a Group Member Organization (GMO) of USDF and all members are automatically USDF Group Members Page 2 Volume 19 May 2005 Board of Directors President Beth Rippel (757) 485-1992 horsemomva@cox. net Vice President Sandy Johnson (757)582-2939 [email protected] Secretary Ramona Laflamme (757) 986-3643 [email protected] Treasurer Rebecca Kelly (757)426-2174 [email protected] AHSA Show Chairman Susan Watkins (757)422-4452 Schooling Shows Robyn Nunally (757)986-4498 [email protected] Clinics & Programs Kathy Rowse (757)255-0524 [email protected] Membership Linda Slocumb (757)488-4678 [email protected] Newsletter Sarah Miller (757)357-7587 [email protected] Scholarship Winnie Baldwin (757)423-1169 Hi everyone, On a windy day, April 16th, about 25-30 members of SVDA attended a Musical Freestyle clinic at Silver Leaf farm. It was a full day starting with an hour lecture followed by several demo riders. Tigger Montague was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about how to pick music for your horse. She explained the power of EDITING. Tigger had a good eye to start a piece of music and recognize whether the horse responded well with it. It was amazing to see the reaction of the horse to a piece of music and Tigger would say “let the horse go to the music”. It generally worked. I left the program looking for a horse to ride to the chicken dance. (We didn’t have one at this clinic.) During the clinic the SVDA board met at lunch time for the sole purpose of voting on the scholarship applicants for 2005. Winnie Baldwin had 6 applications this year. WOW!!!!!! The voting was done by secret ballot and the 2 winners are Gabrielle Fleming and Ashley Swindell. Congratulations!!!!!! I hope those that wanted to were able to order Pamper Chef on time. Remember a portion of this sale is going to the Juniors. I did see a lot of home made chocolate cookies being eaten at the clinic and the schooling show. (I did) This is a Junior fund raiser and they will have snacks and drinks at most of the schooling shows. So please help out by drinking a lot of water to go with the cookies. May 22 is a fix-a-test with Tristin Hardy. This will be held at Happy Valley. Please contact Kathy Rowse to sign up. Good way to brush up on you tests before the next schooling show. Remember we can’t do anything without our member volunteers. Please remember to thank them for their help. For the most part – do it well one time unless you are taking more risk by doing something in an unusual and difficult place – like tempis on a circle. Keep the choreography clear and focused for the judge. Throughout the day there were many questions and many opinions shared by the auditors. Everyone agreed that they came away knowing a lot more about musical freestyle but with still with much more to learn. Thanks to all our demo riders: Tristin Hardy, Sandy Johnson, Evelyn Eidem, Alexi Gagola, Jessica Zoskey and Kathy Rowse. Thanks to Silverleaf Farm for hosting the clinic. But most of all thank you to Tigger for sharing so much knowledge and expertise! Page 5 Volume 19 May MEET NEW SVDA MEMBER: DEBORAH MILLIKEN Submitted by Kathy Rowse As a child Deborah lived on a farm with horses & ponies. Although she didn’t show then, she loved her horses and developed her skills riding by the seat of her pants. As an adult, she was very busy raising her family of 5 children and working with her husband in Real Estate Now that her children are grown, she felt that she finally had some time for her own interests. She 1st learned about dressage on the internet and loved that it seemed to be the ultimate partnership between horses and riders. Additionally she was fascinated by Musical Freestyle. Dressage seemed to be a pair performing a dance – whether ridden with or without music. Last September Deborah started taking 2 lessons a week with Carol Smith at Princess Anne Farm and leasing a TB gelding named “Henry”. She’s already taken him to the 2 SVDA schooling shows this year, competing in Training Level 1& 2. She feels that showing really confirms how your skills are coming along. While competition is just one of many goals, it does make you continue to work hard everyday that you ride, keeping your eye on that goal. In one way she was pleased with her first competitions, they actually went better than she anticipated, but she still felt it pointed out how much she has to learn. Deborah has found that the schooling shows were really fun – people were very friendly to her, as well as encouraging and helpful. SVDA members who didn’t even know her were wishing her good luck before her tests! Currently Deborah is looking for her DREAM horse. She has a picture in her mind of beautiful, tall Bay or Black gelding , preferably a warmblood. She would love the opportunity to own a schoolmaster who could teach her to move up the levels. She has ambitions to show at the FEI levels. But right now, she is continuing to improve her skills and is just thoroughly having a blast riding again! Deborah attended the SVDA Musical Freestyle clinic and was really impressed with how beautifully the demonstration horses were presented. She loved the interaction in the clinic among all the participants and was very impressed with how each horse responded to the music that was best suited to him. She hadn’t met many people who shared her interest in freestyle before! She hopes that there will be more information on freestyle in the future. And we hope that Deborah pursues her love of dressage and freestyle and we will see her out there dancing with her new partner soon! VADA Celebrity Freestyle- June 18, 2005 It is that time of year again and the Virginia Dressage Association is getting ready to host the VADA Celebrity Freestyle on June 1 in Keswick, Va. Always somewhat of a homebody, I wasn’t really all that enthusiastic about traveling to Las Vegas Nevada for the Dressage World Cup when it was first announced a year ago. However when the invitation for the International Dressage Judges’ Forum came – I felt that it would be a good educational opportunity to join the FEI Judge’s forum and learn from the best while watching the best. Little did I know how exciting it would all turn out to be! Although I’ve watched many International competition videos with the Judge’s marks and I’ve been thrilled to watch the best horses in the world on video – NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING can compare to being there in person. All the judges sat together and listened on the headphones to German “O” Judge Volker Moritz who did an outstanding job of giving comments and marks though out the Grand Prix and Grand Prix freestyle. There were quite a few times when he gave 9s and 10s and many of us in the forum would breathe out “YES!” as we had also felt the movement deserved such a high score. As an “S” judge I can tell you that it is rare that you see a 10 extended canter or a 10 passage in the Grand Prix! It was a thrill to recognize movements that deserved such a score! The Grand Prix kept me on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding throughout the evening. The eventual winner, Edward Gal on “Lingh” showed the most flawless transitions in and out of every movement without tension but showing total suppleness and power. On Sat night the Judges were all dressed up in formal attire for the final very special evening of the top 12 freestyles in the world. The Venue was sold out – I hear around 20,000 people. The excitement of the crowd transferred itself to several horses as mistakes and tension did surface in some of the earlier rides. US Rider Leslie Morse and Kingston first brought the house down with incredibly difficult choreography –starting with her first halt and going directly into a piaffe pirouette. WOW what a risk and how difficult can you get! The crowd absolutely went crazy cheering. It was like being at a basketball game instead of the usual quiet dressage show. But the excitement just kept growing. Robert Dover and Kennedy looked somewhat nervous and tense at times but did a beautiful freestyle to exciting music like “ Hey Big Spender “– perfect for the Las Vegas setting. He was rewarded with the 1st score over 80% for the evening. The piaffe/passage tours were a highlight for this pair. Next Brentina and Debbie McDonald passaged down the center line to Motown and R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Debbie had promised us a new and fun freestyle and boy did she deliver! The crowd just energized Brentina to get bigger and better. The mare was so supple and so on the aids – every transition exactly as her rider requested it to be to the music. As she turned down the center line in her final passage – again to R-E-S-P-E-C-T – Debbie raised her hand and asked the crowd to clap along – the place THUNDERED with applause and an immediate standing ovation while Brentina just passaged bigger and bigger. She was rewarded with over an 83% but there were the 2 Dutch Riders to go. Edward Gal and “Lingh” had the most effortless and flowing test that I think I’ve EVER seen. He had relatively straightforward choreography that was highlighted by hugh canter extensions directly into double canter pirouettes. These two really show you what true harmony is in dressage. They would have had my vote for 1st place overall. They got another standing ovation and Edward was so excited about his ride – he was practically jumping up and down on his horse waving at everyone as he left the ring scoring just over 85%. Finally it was time for the 6 time World Cup Champion Anky to go. With music that is designed and recorded live just for Salinero – all you can say is that the music matches the horse perfectly and is totally set for his choreography – which also has a very high degree of difficulty. Salinero is certainly the most brilliant and spectacular mover of all but I have to say that I was slightly disappointed in the tension that I sometimes see in the passage and the hurried tempo of the piaffe. It was these 2 impressions that made me feel that “Lingh” should have been the winner this evening. However there were many highlights in Anky’s freestyle where I could see that 4 out of 5 judges placed her 1st. When it was all over – Anky was now the 7 time World Cup Champion with a score over 86%. And this was the first time ever that the top 4 finishers all scored over 80%! What a special World Cup finish. Yes I was glad that I left Chuckatuck to see this incredible Dressage show that left me absolutely breathless all evening long. Jim Koford and I agreed that it was absolutely the most exciting thing that we have ever seen in our lives. Some may think that we are just a little obsessed. But just ask anyone else who was there and I think they will give you the same reaction!
