The Family Partnership 2011 Annual Report
2011 ANNUAL REPORT Turning distress into hope for children and families in the Twin Cities. Dear Friends, 2011 was a milestone year for The Family Partnership. We rode some amazing waves, navigated a few storms, and faced increasingly strong headwinds. Most importantly, by the end of the year, we had helped over 17,000 people improve their lives through counseling, education, and advocacy. Our most significant accomplishment was completing year one of the successful merger of two strong, effective organizations: Family & Children’s Service and Reuben Lindh Family Services. Together, we pooled strong leadership and expertise; leveraged program strengths; combined resources and created economies of scale to ensure services to our communities’ most vulnerable populations. By all accounts (board, staff, funders, and other stakeholders), this merger was one of the smoothest and most successful around. Our process and results (including 71% growth) are serving as a model for other nonprofits. Last fall, we opened The Family Partnership Learning Garden, a new outdoor playground and environmental space at our north Minneapolis early learning center. After the spring tornado created havoc and damaged our building, the Learning Garden brought hope and joy to the neighborhood, as well as to the children and families we serve. It was the culmination of the elbow-grease and enthusiasm of hundreds of volunteers and our staff, generous donations from Lowe’s Home Improvement, many local companies and individuals, and the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children. Our merged board of directors engaged in significant board development activities to promote smooth integration of our newly merged organization, and then completed an ambitious new strategic plan for 2012-2014. For these activities, as well as continued innovation and effective results in our programs, The Family Partnership was named “Agency of the Year” by the Alliance of Children and Families, a national professional association of family and child serving organizations. We could not be prouder to receive this recognition from our peers, but The Family Partnership has never rested on its laurels, and will not now. We see increasing disparity and need in the families we serve, even as we see decreasing resources for the organizations that serve them. As you read this report of the highlights of 2011, we hope you will think about the contributions you have made to our success and ability to make a difference in the lives of so many. We changed our name to The Family Partnership because we believe that only by working together, with our families, friends, neighbors, and you, will we meet our mission of building strong families, vital communities, and better futures for children. Molly Greenman President and CEO Denise D’Rozario Board Chair 2011 Was Quite a Year! We’re Agency of the Year. • The Family Partnership was named national “Agency of the Year” by the Alliance of Children and Families. We became one. • Two strong, effective organizations – Family & Children’s Service and Reuben Lindh Family Services – merged to become The Family Partnership. We created The Learning Garden. • After the tornado damaged our building in north Minneapolis, hundreds of volunteers and donors came together to create a beautiful outdoor place for our kids to learn, play, and grow. We advocated for the passage of the “Safe Harbor” bill. • We successfully led a broad coalition of partners in advocacy for new “Safe Harbor” legislation in Minnesota, to treat children caught up in sex trafficking as victims in need of services rather than criminals. We served more than 17,000 people. • 4,500 received counseling services • 2,200 benefitted from our educational programs • 10,400 engaged in our advocacy services • 82% low-income; 70% people of color; 31% from immigrant backgrounds; 47% ages birth to 22 years Our therapists help people with depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. In recent years, we’ve been helping more and more children and families heal from violence and trauma, like Eduardo and his family. They came to Minnesota from Mexico in search of the “American Dream.” For 6-year-old Eduardo, his dream became a nightmare. Counseling His family lived in a gang-ridden neighborhood in south Minneapolis. Both of his parents worked two jobs, which left Eduardo home alone a lot. He was afraid walking to his school bus stop. When he got to school, kids made fun of his accent and the color of his skin. When he was eleven, while waiting for his dad in their truck, Eduardo got caught in the middle of a gang shoot-out. Bullets shattered the windshield and Eduardo thought he was going to die. Three years later, a gang member shoved a gun in Eduardo’s stomach while another held a knife to his neck. Again, Eduardo survived but was severely traumatized. When it got so bad that Eduardo was too afraid to even leave his house, his parents sought counseling at The Family Partnership. Cindy, one of our therapists, began to help him heal from the trauma. Today, Eduardo will be the first person in his family to attend college. Most importantly, Eduardo wishes to “serve as a role model for other young people who have to overcome difficult challenges.” We served 4,500 people with mental health concerns. 40% were under the age of 18. Our 26 therapists provided counseling at our 6 office locations and at Head Start sites and other preschools, food shelves, churches, transitional living centers, and numerous metro schools. 1 out of 5 Minnesota children struggle with mental health issues, yet only 20% will get the help they need. Eduardo was nearly killed by gang members and as a result, suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. After receiving counseling from The Family Partnership, he is doing well and attending college this fall. Watch his story by scanning the QR code to the right with your smart phone. Our education programs help children, teens, and their families reach their goals. Our nationally accredited early learning centers prepare children for kindergarten success. Children like Anastasia’s. When Anastasia became homeless, she didn’t know where to turn. Her aunt told her to call The Family Partnership. Anastasia remembers that day perfectly and says, “I couldn’t believe my ears when they said they could help me and my family.” E n o i t a d uc Within a week, our staff was able to find Anastasia housing through one of our community partners. We enrolled her children in our early childhood learning center in north Minneapolis. As with all of the young children who come to our preschools, we provide developmental screenings on-site. Anastasia’s children had a variety of medical issues, including epilepsy. They were able to benefit from speech, occupational, physical, music, and play therapy to enhance their learning potential. Today, Anastasia’s oldest child is in first grade and is doing extremely well. Anastasia herself tells us that The Family Partnership taught her how to be self sufficient. She knows what she needs to do to never become homeless again. “It truly was a blessing that I found this incredible organization that helped me become the person I knew I could be.” We served 2,200 people in our educational programs. 1 out of every 4 children in our community lives in poverty. Minnesota’s low-income children are up to 3 times more likely to score “not ready for kindergarten” than other children. Most of the children in our preschools live in poverty and yet score consistently higher on the kindergarten readiness exams than the state average. Anastasia knows what it’s like to be homeless. She never wanted to let her children see her cry, but some days, it’s all she could do. Now, life is different. Watch her story by scanning the QR code to the right with your smart phone. Our advocacy works to reform public policy and support people to address issues that affect their families and communities. We provide direct services for victims of prostitution, like Mary. Mary grew up in a neighborhood where nearly everyone was some kind of criminal. By sixth grade, she was involved with drug dealers who would pay her and her best friend, Ellen, to drop off drugs for them. One day, while driving to pick up drugs with two dealers, one of them accused Ellen of stealing money. He got crazy, took out his gun, and killed her. After that, Mary said, “I became numb. I didn’t care if I lived or died. Nothing mattered anymore." Advocacy Mary’s life continued to be a nightmare of drugs, violence, and living on the streets. She says the best thing that ever happened to her was getting arrested for prostitution. That’s when someone from The Family Partnership’s PRIDE Program came to offer her a way out. “I was homeless, had lost my children, was addicted to crack, and didn’t have anything to live for. This seemed like a miracle.” PRIDE helped Mary with her court issues and found her a place to live. She participated in the PRIDE groups and set goals for herself. Today, she has been clean and sober for three years and plans to go to college this fall. Mary takes care of her children and says, “I’m proud to be a productive member of society.” More than 10,400 engaged in our advocacy work. The average age a girl in Minnesota is prostituted is 13. Each year, our PRIDE Program helps 150 women and girls escape prostitution, but there are 3,000 girls prostituted in Minnesota annually. The Family Partnership led one of the few successful efforts at the legislature in 2011 that resulted in the passage of the “Safe Harbor” legislation in Minnesota, to treat children caught up in sex trafficking as victims in need of services rather than criminals. Mary said The Family Partnership saved her life. We stood by her, became her family, and helped get her life on track. Today, Mary says, “I am proud to be a productive member of society.” Watch her story by scanning the QR code to the right with your smart phone. All Hands on Deck! There were more than 1,100 volunteers who came “on board” last year to lend a hand, including 49 interns. These incredible volunteers contributed approximately 23,000 hours of service. Using the Independent Sector’s estimated wage calculator, the time our volunteers donated was valued at a half a million dollars! A special thanks to our Board of Directors and all of the volunteers for helping our community’s most vulnerable children and families. ”SFM employees have always valued helping women, children, and families in need with our charitable giving efforts. These values align closely with those of The Family Partnership, and our employees have given generously because they believe in the efforts and programs of this worthwhile organization. We are very thankful for The Family Partnership’s support of this community.” — Amanda Aponte, SFM ‘Connecting to Communities’ Committee Chairperson SFM, the leading workers' compensation insurer in the Midwest, stepped up to help The Family Partnership two years ago. Since then, they have given their time, talent, and treasure for our kids and families. One fundraising idea that really paid off was their “Dress Down Day” in which employees pay five dollars to wear casual clothes to work for a day. All of the money collected is given to The Family Partnership, which has been more than $4,000! 2011 Corporate Group Volunteers 3M American Family Insurance Banana Republic Bremer Bank Bright Horizons Capella University COUNTRY Financial DaVita Dialysis Deloitte Donaldson Company, Inc.
