The Power to SoarTM - YWCA of Minneapolis
The Power to Soar Community Report 2010-2011 TM For 120 years the YWCA of Minneapolis has served our community proudly; thank you for being a part of our bold vision to eliminate racism and empower women and girls. Our tireless commitment to our mission fostered remarkable recognition this year. We were thrilled to be the recipient of the 2011 Nonprofit Excellence Award from MAP for Nonprofits and the Minnesota Council on Nonprofits. Receiving one of the highest awards a nonprofit can achieve reminds us that excellence is worth striving for and leadership is about continuous growth and learning. Most importantly we know it takes a team. A team of people strongly believing in what they do every day, why they do it and for whom they do it. It is about keeping our focus and setting an expectation of excellence in all we do. It is about shrugging off discouragement and learning from our mistakes so that we can continually improve our principles, practices and policies. We would not have received this award without you. It will be treasured by the current board and staff who are entrusted with the future of the YWCA of Minneapolis. It is also a testimony to the courageous and outstanding work of the past board, staff and donors on whose solid foundation we continue to build. Without your continued generosity of resources and spirit, the YWCA would not be the strong, resilient organization it is today. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you. Pamela J. Stegora Axberg, Chair Becky Roloff, CEO & President Recognition YWCA of Minneapolis was honored with the 2011 Nonprofit Excellence Award from MAP for Nonprofits and the Minnesota Council on Nonprofits (pictured at right). The YWCA was recognized for its effective leadership, quality governance, successful strategic initiatives and smart management. In November 2010, the YWCA Children’s Center at Abbott Northwestern received a First Children’s Finance Innovation Award for its unique program model that includes multicultural, English-based care and Somali and Spanish language immersion care in family “bungalow” classrooms. This award recognizes innovative business practices, leadership and expertise in early care and education. 18,000+ health and fitness members used the three YWCA urban fitness centers. 2,600+ diverse individuals participated in public forums, dialogues, workshops and trainings that work to eliminate racism in our community. 1,500+ girls and youth prepared to be leaders, learners and creators of change. 500+ volunteers supported the work of the YWCA of Minneapolis with more than 7,700 volunteer hours. 600+ participated in advocacy and awareness raising activities that address institutional racism and advance economic empowerment for women and girls. 420+ children received a high-quality, early childhood education. To learn. To grow. To care. To share. To strive. To soar. Each year, the YWCA of Minneapolis touches 25,000 lives, from bright-eyed infants and preschoolers to goal-oriented girls and youth. From racial justice advocates and participants to fitness-focused men and women. Every story is different. Every interaction with the YWCA is unique. But the impact is always the same. They come away equipped to create brighter futures for themselves, their families and their community. ywca www.ywcampls.org 3 420+ children received a high-quality, early childhood education. 94% of preschoolers met rigorous early learning standards and were ready for kindergarten. 90% of children, infant through kindergarten, demonstrated age appropriate development. A new after-school curriculum integrates academic success in science and math, financial literacy, leadership development and healthy decision-making. This multifaceted approach creates an enriching and fun community that supports girl-led learning, friendships and personal growth. >> Read Laura’s story at: www.ywcampls.org/circle “I’ve learned a lot about myself through different YWCA girls programs. I wonder sometimes if I would ever have learned that I am a very determined woman, or that I like math, without being in YWCA programs. Because I learned these aspects about myself so early, they are a very strong part of what makes me, me.” — Laura, age 19, YWCA Girls Inc. participant from 4th to 10th grade www.ywcampls.org 7 2,600+ diverse civic leaders and community members engaged in conversations about race and committed to action.
