September 2015
Greetings From The President
We had a good turnout for our Saturday tour led by Jim
King. He took us on a tour to the R.E. Badger Filtration Plant
serving the Santa Fe Irrigation District. There were 8 Model
A’s that took the backroads to the facility. We were met by
Core Schaeffer, the plant manager, who came in on his day
off to give us a very interesting and informative tour of the
water treatment facility. He first gave us a lecture on the
various lakes, pipeline and canal infrastructure that supplies
their water, the treatment process and then what is planned
in the future to ensure an adequate and reliable water supply
for that area. He then answered questions on the subject
that a lot of us had. I will certainly appreciate a little more
about what it takes to provide all of us with a clean and safe
glass of water. About half of our group then headed for
Solana Beach to Tony’s Jacal Restaurant for some
outstanding Mexican food. Thank you Jim King for planning
this tour and also thanks to Lucy Wheeler for the photos that you see in this issue of the Reflector.
On a different subject. We are still looking for a volunteer nominee for Vice President. Our nominee for
President, Jim Gates, has stated that his nomination is conditional on having a full board of officers. It
might seem like it’s still the middle of summer and next year is a long way off. However, at the next meeting
in October, we need to have a complete list of candidates because the very next month, in November, we
will have our election of those candidates. So time is getting short for providing our club with a complete
board for next year.
And finally………And once again on the subject of our requirements and responsibilities regarding the use
of the Palomar Estates Clubhouse for our meetings. I hope each and every one of us realizes and
appreciates that our club has a real good deal in the use of this facility. Probably no other club in San
Diego County has free, I repeat, free use of such a nice facility. This is all due to the efforts of Jim Gates
and the generosity of the residents. We are their guests once a month for our meetings. Their only
requirement from us is that after each meeting, we leave the clubhouse in as good or better condition than
when we arrived. One of these requirements is that we vacuum the floor after each meeting. It doesn’t
matter whether or not you think it doesn’t need it. The requirement is to vacuum the floor after EACH
meeting. I don’t think it’s an unusual request. Do you? For some reason there has been a reluctance from
our membership to volunteer to vacuum the floor. We use the clubhouse eleven times a year. Surely there
are eleven able bodied members in our club that can handle the job and vacuum just once a year. It only
takes about 30 minutes to do it. I know, because I have done it before and I don’t think it’s an unreasonable
request of our members. Those of us that are physically capable need to get off our butts, step up and do
our duty just once a year. Let’s not ruin or throw away a good deal!
See you at the next meeting.
Fred Slikker

Minutes of the September 2nd 2015 Club Meeting
Call To Order: The September 2, 2015 meeting of the Palomar Model A Ford Club was called to
order by President Fred Slikker at 7:00 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Karen Beel. Jim Gates
introduced our visitor, Frank Dumbrique, the proud new owner of a 1928 Model A Roadster.
Sunshine & Sorrow Report: Judy Burrell reported on recent health challenges of Nancy Quinlan
and Herb Thornberg.
Minutes: The minutes were unanimously approved as published.
Treasurer’s Report: Dianne Frazee reported on the previous months balance, the monthly
expenditures, receipts, and ending balance since the last meeting. She then reported on bills that had
been received. Payment of bills was unanimously approved.
Tours: Fred Slikker gave a brief report on the recent tour to the Craftsman Museum. He then
announced that the September 5th tour would be to the Santa Fe Irrigation District’s R.E. Badger Filtration
Plant followed by lunch at Tony’s Jacal. The October tour will be to Julian, and an additional tour that
month will be to the Vista Steam and Tractor Museum on either October 17th or 24th. November’s tour will
be to the Deer Park Auto Museum. Fred then announced that the Escondido Ford Dealership was not
interested in hosting an event on September 19th to celebrate International Model A Day. Therefore we
will have a tour to the Torrey Pines Gliderport
So Cal Report: No Report
Vice President’s Report: Paul Sharrott reported on club merchandise available for sale.
Reflector Director’s Report: In the absence of Dean Barnat, there was no report.
Technical Director’s Report: Remmie Jackson talked about some things to check on your Model A
in preparation for a tour.
Raffle: Greg Wilson announced that next month’s raffle and 50/50 would be designated as ladies night.
Then, with assistance from Barry Martin, he conducted the evening raffle, and thanked those who had
made contributions.
Membership: Judy Burrell announced that there were no new members to report and extra copies
of last year’s directory were available on the back table for anyone.
Public Relations: Fred Slikker stated Barbara Kruegel was unable to attend; however, she did
inform him that we were published in the usual publications. In addition, there was an article in Sunday’s
paper with a list of all clubs, and we were included with our web site address.
Correspondence: President Slikker stated that flyers received had been placed on the back table
for review.
New Business: Fred Slikker suggested the Club consider reducing their bank balance since we are
a non-profit organization, and he asked for suggestions.
Barry Martin suggested “random good deeds” i.e., if you see an article about someone who had a fire and
lost everything, the Club could send them a check for $100. Jim King talked about the “Go Fund Me” web
site as a way to find people truly in need of some financial assistance as a result of a hardship.
Karen Beel suggested we buy something for the Social Club at Palomar Estates East. Jim Gates stated
the Social Director was in need of a couple of large pots, and when she is able to get them, a request
would be submitted to the Club. Jim Gates also suggested that some of the sites we visit on our local tours
accept donations, and that may be worthy of consideration.
After a great deal of discussion, it was moved, seconded and unanimously approved that the cost for
individuals to attend the annual Christmas party remain at $25 this year and in future years, and that any
extra money needed for tips, room charges, etc., be funded by the Club. It was also moved, seconded and

unanimously approved that the Club give a $100 donation to those organizations at the sites we visit
on local tours provided they accept donations.
Old Business: Fred Slikker announced that Jim Gates would be running for President next year;
Bryan Treserdern would be Technical Director for the Reflector articles only; Pam Treserdern would assist
Greg Wilson with the raffle, and Joe Williams and John Frazee had each offered to handle a few local tours.
Those continuing in their current positions would be Dianne Frazee as Treasurer, Lee Rautenkranz as
Secretary and Webmaster, Dean Barnat as Reflector Editor, Bob Olivari as Assistant Editor, Barbara Kruegel
as Public Relations, Marilyn Groover as Hospitality, John Frazee as Librarian and Southwest Regional
Representative, and Judy Burrell as Membership. The position of Vice President is still open.
Monkey Business: Fred stated someone was looking for a Roadster Pickup, so contact him if you
want their information. Dave Belt then entertained the members with a list of items titled “What I discovered
Now that I am Older”. Fred requested some male volunteers for the vacuuming duty following the meeting.
Charles Grabowski and Jim Leary volunteered.
Refreshments: Marilyn Groover thanked those who brought refreshments.
Adjournment. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:18 p.m.
Meeting minutes respectfully submitted by Lee Rautenkranz, Secretary
May 25, 1927 to September 7, 2015
With a heavy heart we are so sorry to say we have lost another long time Palomar Model A member of 38 years.
Herb Thornberg has been a member since October 1977and owned a 1931 Sedan. Our club will
always remember the many times he set up our Christmas dinner at the Flying Bridge each year
for us. Herb will be greatly missed by all the members of Palomar Model A Club. Herb passed
away on Monday, September 7, 2015 in Oceanside with his family at his bedside at 88 years old.
Herb was born in North Dakota and served in World War II. Herb brought his family to
Oceanside in 1958. He was a respected apartment manager, a loyal friend and family man. He
was also a member of the VFW of Vista. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol and two
children Nels and Sheila. He is survived by his daughter, Ann. His service will be on October 2,
2015, 11:00am at Allen Brothers Mortuary of Vista.

TECHNICAL REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 2015
Electrical System Details
by Remmie Jackson
Trouble-shooting the model A electrical system can include electrical
mysteries between the front and rear bumpers. Headlights can be
modified to except quartz bulbs. This requires plastic quartz socket.
Higher amperage over time can short out the headlight circuit. The
higher amperage should not be supplied through the “light switch body”
but supplied by use of relays. Two relays required: one for high beam
and one for low beam.
Turn indicator signal lights can require greater amperage depending on
the type of illumination used. Relays can eliminate the strain on
switching system.
SINGLE POLE DOUBLE THROW SWITCH
GRD-------- GRN LIGHT----- + ------ RED LIGHT------ GRD
The stop light switch comes in two stiles: the 1928-1930 type bolts to the
transmission case. The later switch 1030-1931 bolts to the cross member of
the frame. This late model switch is the better choice for model A’s with F150 or other transmissions. This component can cause stop light malfunctions and should be the checked first before moving to the above
ground and bad electrical contacts. This takes some time to resolve so
disconnect the primary circuit for the coil. The tail and stop light can be a
nightmare because poor contact with socket, bulb and the wire contacts.
Corroded contacts and poor bulb fit. LED brake and taillights solve some of
the problems and deliver a much greater Candlepower.
Now that all the mystery battery drains have eliminated and hard restarts
are still a problem. Sounds like a 6volt battery is involved. Takes the old
6volt generator to replace the energy used by driving 10 miles with the
speed over 20 miles/hour. 12volt alternator solves lots of problems.
IF YOU CAN SMILE WHEN THINGS GO WRONG,
YOU HAVE SOMEONE IN MIND TO BLAME.

The pre-trip gathering revolved around John Frazee’s 1931 Green
Delivery Panel Van with members observing both the van and
underneath the hood. Awe and interest combined.
Fred gathered the group (small though it was ) for a group photo and directions to the plant.
