See the World with the Greece Chamber
ake advantage of great travel opportunities coming your way
with the Greece Chamber of Commerce. In March of this
year, in conjunction with the Rochester Business Alliance,
the Greece Chamber of Commerce offered its members,
business leaders and the community an opportunity to travel to China.
Due to the overwhelming response the Greece Chamber has lined up
several more trips that many people only dream of taking and all at
discounted group rates. The 9-day China trip featured stops in
Beijing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Shanghai. This exciting trip gave
travelers a chance to experience, first hand, Chinese culture and tour
memorable sites, both modern and ancient.
Fifty-three people have signed up for our upcoming trip to Egypt
which will depart on September 18, 2009 and return on September
26th. Those joining us for the Discover Egypt trip can look forward
to cruising the Nile on traditional feluccas, visiting the great Pyramids
of Giza and their guardian Sphinx and the Cairo Museum. The trip
will include a 5-day Nile cruise visiting Karnak and Luxor Temples,
as well as a trip to Aswan where sightseers will visit the Aswan High
Damn and its huge lake, the Temple of Philae and a visit to the
botanical garden and many other sightseeing opportunities.
The exotic destination of India is being offerd next. This 8-day trip
will depart from JFK on January 12, 2010 and will include visits to
Dehli, Jaipur and Agra. A visit to the Birla Temple, Fatehpur Sikri, the
City Palace Museum, Itmad-ud-Dullah, the Taj Mahal, Ambar Palace,
where tourists can enjoy an elephant ride. Travelers can attend a
Gem-cutting & Polishing demonstration, experience the art of carpet
weaving, block printing and turban wearing demonstration, a
sightseeing tour of the massive Agra Fort, a marble craftsmanship
demonstration are just a few of this trip’s highlights. For an additional
fee a 6 day/5 night extension can be added giving travelers the
opportunity to discover either the “Wonders of Nepal” or “Magical
South India.” Join us for a free informational meeting on the India trip
on Tuesday, September 15 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.
If a cruise is more your style of travel the Greece Chamber of
Commerce offered a Canada, New England cruise that will set sail in
early September. Passengers of this cruise will visit New York City,
Newport, Rhode Island, Boston, Massachusetts, Bar Harbor, Maine,
Saint John, New Brunswick, Halifax, and Nova Scotia, all aboard the
Caribbean Princess, through Princess Cruises.
August 29 through September 5, 2010 to take advantage of an
T
Alaskan Cruise where travelers will begin their voyage in Seattle,
Washington and from there visit Ketchikan and Skagway, Alaska,
enjoy scenic cruising through Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska as well as
stopping in Victoria, British Columbia. While aboard the ship enjoy
pools and hot tubs, a gym and fitness area, nine-hole putting course,
jogging track, shuffleboard, casino, world class art collection, gallery
and auctions, 24-hour Internet service, and a library and writing
room.
For those that are looking to stay closer to home and enjoy some of
the scenic beauty that exists right here in our own backyard think
about trying one of our very popular Experience the Canal Erie Canal
cruises aboard the 1953 Mississippi River Boat, the Rose Lummis.
On Friday, September 25, 2009 a “Scenic Fall Day Cruise” will leave
Henpeck Park (on Ridgeway Avenue just before Elmgrove Road) at
10am and return at approximately 5pm that afternoon. Passengers
will cruise to Corn Hill Landing along the picturesque Erie Canal
with the first point of interest being historic Junction Lock and then
passing through the towns of Gates and Chili. From there it will be
onto the City of Rochester docking at Corn Hill Landing for 2 hours
of lunch and sightseeing on your own. On the return trip travelers
aboard can enjoy a Wine Tasting with Mayers Lake Ontario Winery,
all for just $49 p.p.
On Saturday, September 26, 2009 also aboard the Rose Lummis, four
90 minute cruises will be offered also departing from Henpeck Park.
Cruise times are as follows: Noon-Lunch Cruise that includes a box
lunch, 2pm-Late Lunch Cruise that includes a box lunch, 4pm-Happy
Hour Cruise that includes a Wine Tasting, cheese & crackers, and a
6pm-Evening Cruise with luscious desserts & coffee, with desserts
provided by Priscilla’s Cookies & More LLC. Each 90 minute cruise
is $25 p.p. Seating is limited and all Erie Canal Cruise reservations
must be pre-paid.
If you are interested in traveling to exotic destinations or just looking
for something different to experience for a day be sure to call Chris
Sortino at the Greece Chamber of Commerce for details and
reservations at 227-7272 or email her at [email protected].
Be sure to watch for information at www.GreeceChamber.org, or in
the Democrat & Chronicle and Greece Post newspapers for
upcoming trips and events.

Facebook, Linked In & Twitter...Oh My!
BY JODIE A. PERRY, IOM
It seems like every few months there is a new computer
application that is being unrolled to great acclaim. First it
was MySpace, then Facebook followed by Linked In and
now even the front page of the paper is reporting on Twitter
outages! I’ve been talking with a lot of our members, and
other professionals to glean their thoughts on this social
media revolution.
The responses have been interesting and wide-ranging.
Some people are whole-heartedly embracing this new wave
and have set up pages for themselves and their businesses on
as many of these sites as possible. These people have tended
to be in the “young professional” demographic—but not all
of them! Others have been very skeptical of the whole
movement and have stayed as far away as possible. And then
there are those in the middle who have maybe dabbled
around a bit but have not quite figured out what all the fuss
is about.
I recently returned from a national Chamber conference and
social media was definitely the buzz term for the week. Any
seminar that had those two magic words in the title was
filled to capacity. Everyone is trying to figure out the same
thing—“how in the world do we use these tools effectively?”
The answer depends upon who you ask.
I should note that in the interest of full disclosure the Greece
Chamber has decided to jump in with both feet. You’ll not
only find us on the big 3 but also our own dedicated,
members-only site called “SuccessLink.” Join us, become a
fan, tweet to us…you can contact us in a myriad of ways
and also connect with your fellow Chamber members.
I am hardly an expert on social media but here are a few tips
that I have managed to pick up from listening and
researching this phenomenon. First, use social media as a
way to have a conversation with your customers. Marketers
all over the world are scrambling to adapt to this new twoway opportunity. Use it to your full advantage. For an
excellent example on how to do this, check out the Van Putte
Gardens page on Facebook!
Second, think of social media as a wonderful and
inexpensive way to reaffirm your brand. We have been
twittering for a month now and I have to admit I do not think
it has brought us a new member yet. What it has done,
however, is offer us a great opportunity to really drive home
(on a consistent, but hopefully not annoying basis) just
exactly what the Greece Chamber does!
Finally, my advice is to try it out! The more active you are,
the more you will get out of the whole experience. Will
social media stick around? I think so, but who knows what
the next big trend or application will be? Neil Hair, a
professor from RIT who spoke at our luncheon in July
pointed out that many people were skeptical when email first
came out as well and now look at us. Tweet to you later!

Quick Tips: Healthy Eating on a Budget
There are ways to make healthy eating fit your budget. You'll be
surprised by how spending just a little extra time can save you
money. And the more time you spend—in planning, shopping,
and cooking—the more money you'll save.
Save money by learning and planning:
• Plan and shop for a week’s worth of meals at a time. You're less
likely to go out to eat or buy expensive convenience foods
during the week when the ingredients for dinner
are already in your kitchen.
• Keep a list of what leftovers are in your
refrigerator and freezer. That way they won't go
to waste because you forgot they were there.
And you can use the list when you're planning
next week's meals.
• Watch grocery store ads for sales so that you
can stock up on items you know you will use.
You can sometimes save money by buying
more of something. For example, some stores
may give you a discount if you buy 12 cans of
chicken broth instead of just 2 or 3.
• Learn how much food costs. That way you can
tell when an advertised sale is really a good
deal.
• Use coupons. People who invest time in saving
and organizing coupons often save a lot of money.
• Learn how to grow your own vegetables. If you don't have the
space, see if there is a community garden in your neighborhood.
Or try growing a few vegetables or herbs on your porch or in a
sunny indoor room.
See how many convenience foods you can cross off your list by
planning something healthier and cheaper instead. For
example:
• Instead of potato chips, buy unpopped popcorn you can make
at home.
• Instead of ready-made desserts, make your own cookies,
cakes, or muffins.
• Instead of packaged snacks, buy crackers and peanut butter to
make your own little sandwich snacks. Or snack on fresh or
dried fruits.

10/13 Tuesday: Small Business Success Series. “The
Business Tracking of Your Business,” presented by
Kathy Zaroczynski, Zaroczynski & Associates.
11:45am-1pm, Greece Chamber Conference Room,
Suite 202, 2496 W. Ridge Road. Presenting Sponsor:
AT&T. Track Sponsor: USA Payroll, Inc.
Reservations are requested for all Chamber luncheons and
events; call 227-7272 to make reservations. All committee
meetings and training sessions, unless otherwise noted, will
take place in the Greece Chamber’s Conference Room at 2496
West Ridge Road, Suite 202. If you are interested in one of our
many active committees or you would like to gain more
exposure for your business, please call us at the Chamber.
• Instead of sweetened cold cereals, buy oatmeal or other hot
cereal.
Save money at the grocery store:
• Always shop with a list. Try not to buy anything that’s not on
your list, but be open to unexpected sale items that you know
you will use.
• Shopping with family members can cost you money if they talk
you into buying things that aren't on your list.
Shop by yourself if you have to.
• Buy fresh fruits and vegetables when they're
in season. They are likely to be fresher and cost
less.
• Buy frozen vegetables. They are picked at the
peak of ripeness and have just as many—or
more—vitamins and minerals as fresh. And
they cost less.
• Buy store brands instead of name brands.
• Shop in the bulk foods aisle, where things like
beans, rice, pasta, and other dried foods may be
cheaper.
Save money elsewhere:
• Whole-grain bread is healthier than regular
bread, but it usually costs more. If you have a
bakery outlet in your community, you can buy
day-old whole-grain bread there at a discount.
• Buy fresh produce at a farmer’s market or a produce stand.
Prices are usually—but not always—lower there than at the
grocery store.
• Many fruit orchards let customers pick the fruit themselves to
save money.
Save money in your kitchen:
• Build up your cooking skills. Buy one good, general cookbook.
Used bookstores are a good source.
• Invest in a slow cooker or Crock-Pot. With a slow cooker you
can buy less expensive cuts of meat, because the long, slow
cooking time makes them tender and very tasty. Plus, the dish
cooks all day while you're at work or busy with something else.
CHAMBER
C H AT. . .
• Learn how to cut up a chicken.
You can save money by buying
whole chickens and cutting them
apart yourself. And make soup
with the bones.
• Make vegetables your main
dish, and serve your meat as a
smaller side dish. You'll save
money by eating less meat. You
can also serve beans instead of
meat.
• Make your own lunch, and take
it with you to work.
• Use recipes you can double or
triple, so you can freeze leftovers
for later.
• When a recipe calls for milk,
use dried fat-free milk. It's
cheaper and doesn't need to be
kept cold. You just add the milk
powder to water to make only as
much as you need.

Advanced Home Inspections is NYS licensed and insured, has state-of-theart testing equipment, provides 24 hour a day / 7 days per week scheduling

your choice.” According to John, the home inspector is the only person in
the construction industry that has an obligation to give their unbiased
professional opinion of all concerns to the home. “We show up at your

Or snack on fresh or
dried fruits.

many active committees or you would like to gain more
exposure for your business, please call us at the Chamber.
• Instead of sweetened cold cereals, buy oatmeal or other hot
cereal.
Save money at the grocery store:
• Always shop with a list. Try not to buy anything that’s not on
your list, but be open to unexpected sale items that you know
you will use.
• Shopping with family members can cost you money if they talk
you into buying things that aren't on your list.
Shop by yourself if you have to.
• Buy fresh fruits and vegetables when they're
in season. They are likely to be fresher and cost
less.
• Buy frozen vegetables. They are picked at the
peak of ripeness and have just as many—or
more—vitamins and minerals as fresh. And
they cost less.
• Buy store brands instead of name brands.
• Shop in the bulk foods aisle, where things like
beans, rice, pasta, and other dried foods may be
cheaper.
Save money elsewhere:
• Whole-grain bread is healthier than regular
bread, but it usually costs more. If you have a
bakery outlet in your community, you can buy
day-old whole-grain bread there at a discount.
• Buy fresh produce at a farmer’s market or a produce stand.
Prices are usually—but not always—lower there than at the
grocery store.
• Many fruit orchards let customers pick the fruit themselves to
save money.
Save money in your kitchen:
• Build up your cooking skills. Buy one good, general cookbook.
Used bookstores are a good source.
• Invest in a slow cooker or Crock-Pot. With a slow cooker you
can buy less expensive cuts of meat, because the long, slow
cooking time makes them tender and very tasty. Plus, the dish
cooks all day while you're at work or busy with something else.
CHAMBER
C H AT. . .
• Learn how to cut up a chicken.
You can save money by buying
whole chickens and cutting them
apart yourself. And make soup
with the bones.
• Make vegetables your main
dish, and serve your meat as a
smaller side dish. You'll save
money by eating less meat. You
can also serve beans instead of
meat.
• Make your own lunch, and take
it with you to work.
• Use recipes you can double or
triple, so you can freeze leftovers
for later.
• When a recipe calls for milk,
use dried fat-free milk. It's
cheaper and doesn't need to be
kept cold. You just add the milk
powder to water to make only as
much as you need.
