The Coffee Shop
Contingency Plan
We will strictly enforce the rule: One Member, 5 guests maximum
The total seating capacity of all areas combined
is almost the same as before in the Coffee Shop.
Dear Members,
As we all know, the renovation to the Coffee
Shop will be a huge disruption to the Members
and your guests.
We want to ensure that each Member’s visit, even with the disruption, will be an enjoyable experience. To mitigate Members’ negative
experiences, we have decided to arrange for a
“concierge team” to greet all Members on arrival. There will be a special reception “desk” near
the front entrance to “meet and greet” Members,
enquiring as to where each Member is going. If
athletic in nature, no problem…away they go.
Once determined they are looking for an F&B
outlet, the staff will be on two way radios (with
ear pieces) to find the rooms that have available seating and then the staff will direct the
Members and guests to where the outlets have
seating available. Those Members who are already in the Club will be able to walk in to any
outlet and sit at any available table.
Breakfast á la carte service will be in The Pavilion
and Pavilion Balcony from Monday thru Saturday.
On the weekends and public holidays the Aerobic
Room will be added for breakfast service if necessary. We will offer a buffet breakfast in The Pavilion
To maximise the seating, we will remove the existing furniture from The Bar and The Pavilion
and store in one of our onsite containers. We
will move all the existing Coffee Shop tables and
chairs into the Fincher Room, The Bar and The
Pavilion.
on Sunday mornings and a carvery on Saturdays
and Sundays at lunch. There will be a family dinner
buffet on Sundays only in The Pavilion.
Fincher Room (2/3 of the room), The Pavilion,
Pavilion Balcony, Coffee Shop Balcony, The Bar
(with extra seating), and Aerobics Room will be
used for the regular coffee shop menu for lunch
and dinner. The Grill Room will be open 7 days
a week for lunch and dinner and the regular Grill
Room menu will be used. On Sundays, as we
did with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, the age
restriction in the Grill Room will be lowered to
8 years. The age limit in the Main Bar remains
at 18 years and above. The separate Chinese
Restaurant menu will not be available and there
will be no reservations taken for any venue except the Grill Room.
We will use the Sun Lawn as another “bar” option and it will be open weekday evenings from
5:30pm, and regular bar hours on Saturdays,
Sundays and public holidays. The Sun Lawn will
offer free beer tasting on select Saturdays and
free wine tasting on select Sundays during lunch
periods. Live music will be offered on Sunday afternoons at 12 to 3pm.
The closure of the Coffee Shop is during
September and October therefore we thought it
is appropriate to create a “beer garden” atmosphere and we will feature a German Oktoberfest
themed food and beverage menu to promote this
concept. The Sun Lawn will also offer the Coffee
Shop menu. We will erect one of our large, white
marquees to cover the Sun Lawn and use the
swimming pool’s comfortable wicker furniture as
well as some green tables (with umbrellas) and
green plastic chairs as the furniture. We should
be able to fit approximately 40-50 seats.
As an alternative, the Swimming Pool dining option will be offered to Members as well.
The Pavilion, Sun Lawn and Fincher Rooms will
have extra POS connections to speed up the
service.
Loud noise associated with the renovation will be
stopped from 12 noon to 2:30pm daily to avoid
discomfort to Members. Please note that the
project workmen will be working 7 days a week.

Fellow Members,
Work on the new and improved Coffee Shop is now well underway
and I am pleased to advise Members that the General Committee has
decided on the future name of this popular facility. You may recall that
all Members were invited to submit their suggestions and the General
Committee was delighted with the response as over 200 possible names
were received. The Coffee Shop will be named “The Boundary Café”
in line with the feeling that the facility’s name should have a cricketing
association. Several Members suggested the name and the General
Manager will be in contact to distribute their prizes. Many thanks to all
who took the time to participate.
For many sporting sections, this month sees their league competitions
in full swing. Members will be interested to learn that this year will
see an increase in the number of KCC teams playing competitively in
football, hockey and lawn bowls. As a sports club, it is imperative that
we continue to build up this aspect of the KCC as our land lease is
based on this. Inevitably, this will mean that we need to accommodate
an increasing number of members who play competitive sport to the
requisite standard. To this end, the General Committee has recently
approved a number of changes to the Junior Subscribership scheme
which also includes an improved process to monitor all junior and
sporting subscribers’ playing records and overall contribution to the
Club. Taken together, this should strengthen our position as a leading
sports club in Hong Kong.
Every year, the Club organises a team to take part in the “Stride For
A Cure” walk which benefits the Hong Kong Cancer Fund. This year,
the event will be held on Sunday, 23 November in the Tai Tam Country
Park. I would invite Members to enter the walk (we have been allocated
30 places) or to sponsor the KCC Team. Please contact Venice Tang,
our Programme & Events Manager in the office if you would like to be
involved and support this very worthwhile cause.
And last but not least, I wish to congratulate a long-standing member,
Patrick Purnell-Edwards, who has recently been made an Honorary
Life Vice President of the HK Hockey Association. Patrick has made a
tremendous contribution to the sport in Hong Kong in various guises as
KCC player, umpire, and committee man. The award is well deserved
and reflects very positively on KCC as many of our Members continue
to put something back into their sport when they approach the end of
their competitive playing careers. Well done, Patrick!
Enjoy your Club!

Dear Members,
Coffee Shop renovation: The Coffee
Shop renovation programme commenced on Saturday 13 September
and thank you to all Members who have
been tolerant of the disruption and inconveniences caused. The project is
moving along nicely with no hidden surprises to date. We will advise you by
e-mail WOK and posted notices on the
date the Coffee Shop will re-open.
Beer Garden on the Sun Lawn: We
will be featuring German food and beer
on the Sun Lawn during the two months
of disruption due to the Coffee Shop renovation. Come on down for some great
German beers and delicacies created by
our Chef Gary. Free beer and wine tastings on selected Saturdays and Sundays
and live music on Sundays from 12 noon
to 3pm. Look for details elsewhere in this
publication.
Halloween Family Campout: Due to
the cancellation of the Cricket Sixes, we
are pleased to announce a second family campout. The dates are Friday, 24
October and Saturday 25 October. The
details of this event were published on
the back page of the September WOK
magazine and on the KCC website.
Horse Racing Season has begun:
Racing has commenced at the two race
courses and as was the case last year,
we will be sharing our Shatin suite with
two other Clubs – The HK Cricket Club
and the HK Golf Club. Check out the
race schedule (October’s is in this magazine) on our website and plan a date to
come and enjoy a Sunday lunch buffet in
the suite. Alternatively, you can book our
suite at the Happy Valley Race Course

Members/Subscribers who are in a
cohabitating relationship: Members
or Subscribers who are not married but
are in a cohabiting relationship may
apply to introduce their cohabitant as
a Guest and, where appropriate their
children as Guests, on an unrestricted basis. Any such children shall have
the same privileges as the children of
Members or Subscribers up to the age
of 28. Members or Subscribers may be
asked to supply such information as is
deemed necessary to support their applications and may be required to obtain the signature of an existing Member
to confirm the cohabiting relationship.
Each such Guest may, at the sole discretion of the General Committee, be issued
with a Guest card but only one application from a Member or Subscriber will
be considered at any one time. Such
Guests will be deemed to be users of
the Club and are subject to the Articles
and Bye-laws of the Club where the context is deemed appropriate. The holder of the Guest card will be allowed to
sign on the account of the Member or
Subscriber introducing the Guest but
the Member or Subscriber will be responsible for any such expenditure. It
is the Member or Subscriber’s responsibility to advise the Club when they no
longer wish their nomination to continue to hold a Guest card and when their
co-habitation with the nominated Guest
ceases, but regular changing of nomination will not be permitted.
A c c o rd i n g to t h e C o l l i n s E n g l i s h
Dictionary, cohabitation is referred to as
“a couple who live together as husband
and wife, esp without being married”.
Christmas: That’s right, Christmas is
just around the corner and now is the
time to plan your Christmas activities
at the Club. Call our Food & Beverage
Department to arrange your family gathering, your business lunch or dinner or
your staff party. Don’t delay and be disappointed as our available dates are
booked early. Contact Teresa at [email protected] or call 3473-7125.
New Year’s Eve: Come, celebrate
the last day of 2014 at the Club and
get ready to be entertained by a great
dance band. Last New Year’s Eve, the
Members enjoyed the music so much
that we decided to book the group to
entertain you again this New Year’s Eve!
Come on down and dance the night
away with the great sounds of the Paul
Sapiera Super Band. Mark your calendars now to be at KCC New Year’s Eve!
101st Children’s Sports Day – 1
Januar y 2015: Following the great
success of the 100th Children’s Sports
Day on 1 January 2014, KCC will be celebrating the 101st with as much enthusiasm as last year’s event. Mark your
calendars now and make sure you register to attend as there will be fun for the
whole family.
Stride for a Cure – Sunday, 23
November: Once again KCC is organising a “team” of striders to enter this
worthwhile cancer charity fun walk. Last
year we raised HK$53,140 and we are
hoping that this year we will be able to
raise even more money. If you would
like to support our team with a donation, forms are available at the Reception
Desk. I’m sure we all know someone
who has been affected by this disease,
so please donate. Contact Venice Tang

The 4th Asian Schoolboys
Championship 14-22 August 2014
HOCKEY
The 4th Asian Schoolboys Championship
took place from 14 to the 22 of August, it was
a rare and rewarding experience which allowed players within the age group to showcase their abilities at this competitive level as
well as gain a better understanding of the level of performance required through observing the styles of gameplay adopted by teams
from different countries and regions. As a result, I believe that all the players have returned
with enhanced skills and greater interest in
the game.
Unfortunately, the team was unable to find
our peak form and could not progress to the
semifinals. Despite this, I feel that, over the
course of the few days of competitions, the
team was able to come together stronger after each game with increased understanding
and unite together in the single-minded approach to complete a common goal. This was
most evident in our final match against the
team that was anticipated to be the strongest within our pool – Singapore. Throughout
the match, we were able to produce a considerable number of attacking opportunities
that shook the core of the opposition, which
unfortunately were not able to yield any positive results and ended at full time as a loss
to Singapore. However, it highlighted and
demonstrated the potential of what a team
like this is able to display.
Apart from the competition, the tour provided players with exchange opportunities with
the multinational and multicultural athletes.
This important aspect, significantly widened
the horizons of all parties involved in terms of
personal and cultural understanding, and allowed many friendships to be forged through
the common interest of hockey.
The team consisted of 3 kcc players and 2
kcc coaches.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who
helped make this such an amazing learning
experience, especially KCC’s very own Ken
and Jaime who coached the team. Without
their great guidance and inspiration this tournament would not have been possible.

After the pool games, KCC saw themselves in the quarterfinals against last

shocked them with a 2-1 win. The win
put them in the semifinals against
SSSC. Beating Khalsa gave them the
momentum and determination to take
it to the final, beating SSSC 3-1 to setup a final confrontation with KNS.
The final was as spectacular as every
final should be. It was a scoreless first
half. second half saw KNS awarded a
penalty and was saved by KCC goalie Kelson Wong. KCC supporters went
wild when Kelson saved another goal
from a counter attack but the rebound
saw the opposition put it in the net.
With only a minute to go, KCC continued to push but KNS held their ground

who were also unable to find their way
past our defense and they too fell to our

In the finals against KNS, we were one

saving a penalty before KNS managed
to bundle in a goal to win 1-0. Unbeaten
the whole tournament before the finals,
we outlasted teams consisting of exGB, ex-Pakistani, ex-Indian and current
HK team representatives before losing
to a team which had two players with
a combined total of over 450 caps for
Malaysia.

The standard of the Premier
League is running rampant
as unchecked import players continue to limit opportunities for local players whilst,
in contrast, the majority of
our team remains eligible for
selection for the HK national
team. This success would
not have been possible
without the professionalism of the coaching team
led by Jackie Chan and the dedication
of the players in the face of ever-growing odds.
On another day, the imports of Khalsa,
HKFC and SSSC might have overpowered us but on this day we proved that,
even if for the briefest of glimpses, our
players are capable of challenging the
best in HK.

The C Team – Another Great Start
31 August 2014
KCC C Team was invited to the Club de
Recreio Centenar y Cup Game on 31
August 2014. The last time Recreio invited
us was back in 2011 and we won.
First half saw 2 short corners awarded to
KCC which were scored by Richard and
Boon. Second half, another short corner
goal by Ken. Recreio retaliated and equalised the score at 3-3.
With just 20mins to go, Richard scored
again from a short corner. The last goal
came from our young up and coming Rohit. Final score 5-3 to KCC C. Another great
pre-season start!

Interview:
Fiona White
Laughing All the Way…
It’s an impressive feat to have spent 27 years
in Hong Kong, and 27 of those years spent
playing for the Kowloon Cricket Club. Fiona
White is about as club loyal as they come,
and come 3 September, will bid farewell to
a club that has provided her and her family
with a home and community for almost 30
years and return to the UK. In that time, Fiona
has represented the KCC in hockey, tennis, league,
football, cricket – even squash, and admirably so.
She has also represented the Hong Kong team,
the Hong Kong Vets, and has been a part of 12
overseas players’ trips. Lauren Cameron sat
down for a chat with the hockey legend, to find
out about her greatest Club memories, her
hockey career highlights and to get some solid
advice for up and coming KCC Members.
So, you’ve played for the KCC for 27
years. Have you been playing hockey
the entire time?
I had three breaks throughout that time. I had
babies, I was off sick for a while, I even retired
for a season... But I actually became bored
and asked if they needed me again (laughs).
How did your KCC journey begin?
One of the first people I met in Hong Kong was
a KCC Member. They told me how great the
Club was, and I pretty much joined immediately. And so it began!
Were you a player before that?
I played hockey from age 8, in primary school.
I then played in London, at uni, I played indoor
hockey in Germany… I’d kept it up pretty constantly since I was a young girl. But I’ve had a
few years off hockey when I joined the KCC.
And what was the KCC like when you
joined? Any outstanding memories?
To be honest, it hasn’t changed much over
the years. It’s always been the same, friendly
club. I do remember the Hockey Section being
bigger – there were four ladies’ teams at the
time. It was also much more casual. I played
10
my first season and then coached my team
for the second season! There were no paid
coaches – we organised most of the events
ourselves, too.
Did the KCC perform well in those first
few years you were with the Club?
We did – back the n, hockey competition was much the same as it is today. The
KCC, Football Club and Valley were the top
three clubs in the comp, so the rivalry hasn’t
changed much over the years.
Over the years, which roles have you
held within the Club? It sounds like you
have done it all!
I’ve been a coach, an A team captain, a convenor, twice, a B team captain in 2010 or
thereabouts… I’ve gone back and forth between the A and B teams quite a lot over the
years!
What are some of your best memories
with the Club?
In ‘92/’93, the KCC won everything. The
League, the Cup and the 11-a-side tournament – everything! I remember celebrating
over about 38 bottles of champagne and
chips… We probably would have enjoyed that
whether we won or lost, mind you. Another
outstanding memory is being asked to put
my clothes on by the authorities in Penang,
Malaysia! We were playing in an all-day tournament, and between games, we were sunbathing on the sidelines… Not the best idea
in a Muslim country…
Do you plan on playing hockey when you
return to the UK?
Not sure yet. I might do. All I am thinking about
is how cold it would be on the pitch – having
freezing cold toes while playing is my number one memory of playing hockey in the UK!
That being said, sport has been a constant
throughout my entire life, and it’s the best
way to meet people, so I’d like to think I’ll play
again.
Any tips for KCC newcomers?
If you get the opportunity, play sport for the
KCC. Join the Club and make the most of it.
Whether you are single, a newlywed, or a family, the KCC will offer you a home and a good
little support network here in Hong Kong. My
other tip would be to work hard on the pitch
and play harder after.

KCC Girls’/Women’s Football
6 September 2014
The Football Season kicked off on 6
September with over 50 young women and girls attending their respective
Saturday morning training sessions. We
have an exciting season ahead again,
with many Junior Tournaments already
planned and participation in the U14
and U17 Development Leagues. Our
U20 Young Women’s Team will again
compete in the HKFA Young Women’s
League, starting later in the year, hoping
to improve on their impressive 3 place(s)
in League and Cup, last season. We also
hope to take U12 and U14 girls to overseas tournaments and specifically defend our Singapore 7s U14 Cup and U12
Plate titles. We also hope to see a UK
team comprising of 2 ex-KCC Girls coming to Hong Kong to play in a tournament
in December.
Our KCC Maidens (adult ladies’ team)
will also continue this season with a view
to establishing themselves and then entering the HKFA Women’s League, but
we do need more players so if you want
to play football, ladies,
then please contact me.
Our KCC Maidens played
at the Graham Archer 7s
Tournament a couple of
weekends ago and only
narrowly lost 1:0 in the
Ladies’ final.
We still have some spaces within our Junior age
groups (U10, U12 and
14
U14) as well as the Young Ladies (U20)
and adult Ladies teams so if you are interested in playing football, please feel
free to contact me.

“Billaud-Simon’s 2011 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre – from vines principally in Chapelot,
and some third of which are among the domaine’s oldest, planted in 1935 – delivers
sweetly-ripe pear, kiwi and grapefruit sizzlingly tinged with white pepper, radish and
lemon zest, and imbued with a sense of chalk dust suffusion and illusive kelp and seaweed. There is so much going on in this densely packed bottling that you almost want
to spread it more thinly to get a better view, which is not something I would say about
many other wines of this vintage.” RP 92

of violets and plum that complement well the round, supple and delicious flavors that
possess excellent complexity for a wine of this level, all wrapped in a firm but balanced
finish. Lovely juice for what this is. Drink: 2016+.Comments: outstanding! 88-91 BH

Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Christian Sérafin 2007
HK$ 520
“A touch of wood sets off complex, ripe, somber and animale suffused aromas of dark
pinot fruit that precedes rich, full and powerful medium-bodied flavors brimming with
dry extract, all wrapped in a powerful and impressively persistent finish. Outstanding
quality for its level and recommended. Drink: 2014+.Note: 55+ year old vines, a portion
of which abut Griotte.Comments: outstanding!” 90 BH

Pommard Grand Clos de Epenots Domaine de Courcel 2007
HK$ 680
“Here the nose is notably ripe and quite densely fruited with a mix of underbrush, warm
earth, game and red currant aromas that introduce dense, serious, robust, indeed even
burly flavors that are quite primary and culminate in a very firm finish that delivers excellent length. In contrast to the approachability of the Fremiers, this clearly needs time in
bottle.” Drink: 2019+.Comments: outstanding! 92 BH

Ladies’ B Team
Hurray! Hurray! The Ladies’ B has a very good start in
second half. Our first game was playing home against
STSA-B, won 7-1. Our second game was playing away
Island East and we made a wonderful victory by getting
8-0. Well done, ladies! The amount of time and effort you
put in practicing definitely has paid off. Keep it up! We
are in the 5th position now. Our goal of getting back to
Division 2 is achievable. Let’s make it happen!

Greens Convenor’s Report
August Weather Report
Sunshine of 212.0 hours was 12% above normal for
August. Rainfall was 548. 2 millimeter s, about 27%
above the August normal. Accumulated Rainfall since
1January 2014 was 2312.1 millimeters, about 21% above
normal.
grounds manager Peter Rasmussen regarding the realistic
future of the top green performance, I successfully tabled
at the Lawn Bowls sub-committee meeting on 28 August a
two-option proposal for a professional redevelopment of
the top green.
General News
Historical Problem
Top Green Development Proposal
The 21% above average rainfall and resulting ponding on
the greens has highlighted both greens’ inadequate drainage systems contributing to the backwards grass coverage
performance and the resulting excessive top green closures.
1. Bring the top green (grass) up to standard via a full
reconstruction
2. Convert the top green into a synthetic green
The Lawn Bowls sub-committee are therefore leading a long
term remedy for the top green. Our grounds management
are in agreement that failure to act will result in a long-term
deterioration. Therefore, ignoring the problem is no longer
an option.
Prepare feasibility papers for both proposals (1&2) and put
to the members for their consideration and vote.
In the examples of ponding shown here, the water sits instead of draining, on both greens resulting in severe damage
to the grass (13-14 August 2014).
Action: following my discussion and agreement with our
Proposed Process
• Table the members’ preferred option at the Grounds
sub-committee for discussion and recommendation to
the GC for approval and funding.
• Greens Speed: the grounds manager Peter Rasmussen
is now displaying the league games greens speed on the
lawn bowls notice board.
• Bottom greens: Jordan Road end rink’s deteriorating
slope at the ditch: this has been raised with the grounds
manager who advises he will look into a remedy.
• Chemical Signage: The Club management have confirmed, warning signage will
be displayed on the day of
spreading and the two following days.

Inter-club Tennis
23 August 2014
TENNIS
The Inter-club Tennis Tournament held on
23 August 2014 hosted by KCC was one of
the first ever inter-club tennis tournaments to
be played on grass. This annual social event
has previously been hosted by Hong Kong
Football Club (HKFC), Clearwater Bay Golf &
Country Club (CWBG&CC). Invited clubs such
as those above and Hong Kong Cricket Club
(HKCC) gather to “battle on the court” and
foster friendship amongst the clubs.
For the tournament, the total number from
each club was 12 players made up by 6 men
and 6 women. Each club’s team for this tournament comprised of ladies A, B and C and
men’s B, C and D players. Mixed doubles are
also played as part of the format.
KCC Ladies’ Team:
Louise Ng, Lili Tsang, Vanisha Pursnani, Peta
Lee, Jesse Panjabi, Isabelle Wou and Anna
Banh
KCC Men’s Team:
Spencer Kwan, Ken Wong, Anthony
Ho, Peter Leung, Anthony K irkDuncan, William Wong and KS Wong
When the tournament commenced,
the players walked on the grass
courts with great admiration, the
fresh air blowing on their faces and
the hot sun beating down on their
heads they started to look keen,
dete r mine d a nd e age r to be gin the challenge of acquiring the
20
silverware by giving their very best to uphold
the images of each of their own club.
Throughout the day, the matches were tough,
the scores were tight and each player had
made every attempt to save each point. If you
were watching the players on the site, it was
stunning to see some of the shots they made
and at times, one would think they were at
Wimbledon.
Overall KCC won the tournament by a mere
point, winning 43 games to HKFC on 42
games, CWBG&CC scored 39 and HKCC 38.
The day culminated in a reception dinner at
which KCC President, Rob Gill presented the
winner’s trophy to KCC and a commemorative
Crystal Tray to the other clubs. If you had been
present you would have noticed Rob smiling
all night, as he was proud that the winning trophy had gone to his own Club. As the event
was enjoyed by all participants, Rob encouraged the Section to hold more similar events
in the near future.
During the night it was obvious to all that the
winning KCC team players deserved a gentle
rub on the shoulder to say “Congratulations”
and to let them know that they had done a wonderful job. Meanwhile, the losers were equally
in need of comforting, and at the hospitality of
our Tennis Convenor Rego, 3 bottles of 12-yearold Macallan Scotch Whisky were provided and
consumed with the cheer and laughter to be
heard ringing throughout the bar – “bottoms
up”. KCC has once again been the host to a
successful sporting event, fostering friendship
and sportsmanship amongst the clubs of Hong
Kong.

Laura Trayford Tennis Trophy
1 September 2014
On 1 September KCC hosted the HKCC
for the annual Laura Trayford Tennis
Trophy. Laura passed away from ovarian
cancer in 2010 and as an integral member of tennis teams at KCC and HKFC the
tournament is held in her memory as a celebration of her contribution to the sports
at both clubs and also to highlight awareness of a disease that takes the lives of
friends, mothers, daughters, aunts and
sisters all around us everyday. This year
over HK$10,000 was raised at the event.
After postponing the tournament on
three occasions throughout the year, the
stars were aligned, the courts booked
and the heavens clear for a fabulous
night of tennis. And as it would happen
it was also Laura’s daughter, Abbey’s
birthday.
Both teams had three pairs of ladies,
each of them being A,B and C level players. With a similar format to that
played at the recent inter-club tournaments, the ladies battled it out on the
court over 3 sets.
At the end of the night the HKCC had a
clear victory as they won all but one set.
The matches were close but not good
enough to keep the prized wine glass
Laura Trayford Trophy in the KCC trophy
cabinet for the coming year.
Thanks go to all of the participants and
spectators on the night as well as the
Tennis Convenor who supported this
event. A special thanks to Mike Trayford
who presented the trophy. We shall do
our best next year to bring the trophy
back across the pond to KCC.

Juniors Introduced to Badminton
BADMINTON
This summer the sports hall was a beehive of activity on the Badminton Society night on Thursdays.
The young children took advantage of the summer
holidays and a break from their studies and usual curriculum to come learn and play Badminton.
Coach Liew had his hands full as these youngsters both boys and girls were like eager beavers
to understand what warm ups and correct stance
would be required to make them a better player.
It was very interesting as the senior players gave
way to these youngsters but watched them with
an experienced eye adding their own valuable insight and encouragement whenever needed. It
was a sight to see as three generations of players
stood in the sports hall. The seniors reminded the
teens like Alison, Brandon, Chris and Lucas that
not so long ago they were the same age as these
youngsters. So I quote F. Scott Fitzgerald:
grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the
summer”.
We would like to thank the parents for bringing their children and also make a mention that
Coach Liew does coaching for Juniors the details
of which can be found in the magazine.
Cheers!

Faldo Golf Day

An enthusiastic group departed KCC on 18
August to play in the 8th Event in the 2014

course at Mission Hills.

of 82. Alfonso had 4 pars in a front 9 of 45
and 2 birdies and 3 pars in a back 9 of 42 for
a round of 87.
For many, it was their first visit to play Faldo
but for the regulars it has become an a
 nnual
pilgrimage to try to come to terms with the
many problems posed by Sir Nick. Our first
Golf Society trip to the Faldo Course was in
2001 when it had recently opened and we had
to travel along dirt track roads to the container
which served as changing rooms, toilets and
snack bar.
Results
Things have changed and the opening of the
Mid Valley clubhouse a few years ago p
 rovided
an excellent changing and dining facility with
magnificent views over the Island Green hole
as well as the 17th and 18th holes.
A special feature of the Faldo course is the
many fairway bunkers, and good course management is required to navigate around the
many hazards lurking in just the right place to
catch out the unwary player.
Deepu Hartono started well with a birdie on
the first hole and 4 pars in a front 9 of 43, but
was only warming up as he got a birdie and 5

with Richard still hanging onto the lead with
166pts but only one point behind on 165pts
are Alfonso and CM Mak. Close behind are
David Brettell on 162pts and Zaki Dad on
161pts and both of them have low scores in
their total which will be discarded if they have
good results in the final 3 events.
In joint 6th place on 159pts are Gary Sharma

Our next outing will be a 2-day
trip to Shunde to play the Junan
Countr y Garden course and we
will play the 9th Stableford League
event there on Friday, 12 September.
Pace of Play
This is an important subject which
can be a cause of great frustration for
many p layers. Many courses advertise a target time for each round and
on Kau Sai Chau (East and South) each
buggy has the target time for each hole.
Slow play affects everyone’s enjoyment
of the game. Players should make a real
effort to play at a good pace. Priority on
the course is determined by a group’s
pace of play. It is a group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front.
In order to keep up a good pace the
following tips are essential:
• Avoid excessive practice swings.
• Be ready to play as soon as it is your
turn, for example, have your glove
on.
• Proceed to your ball as soon as it is
safe to do so.
• If you want to determine yardages,
do so while walking to your ball.
• At the putting green, leave bags/
•
•
•
•
carts in a position that will allow
quick and easy movement off the
green to the next tee.
Study your line of putt while others
are putting, avoiding any distraction
to the other players.
When the hole is finished, leave the
putting green immediately.
Mark scores on the way to the next
tee.
If there is any chance of your ball being lost outside a water hazard or out
of bounds, play a provisional ball.
Following these simple hints your speed
of play will improve and and you will
avoid hassle from marshals and you will
enjoy your round even more.
Cheers,
Richard

Workout Tips
Scissor Crunches
Step 1: Starting Position
FITNESS
Begin by positioning yourself near the end
of a bench or sit crossways, grasping the
bench for support and leaning back past a
45-degree angle.
Step 2: Abs Workout
This works both the upper and lower abs.
Start by pulling your knees to your chest,
rounding your back as you progress. While
using a weight between your feet, please
remember not to attempt this until you’ve
passed 30 reps per set (lower reps tend
to build mass, which is not what you want
at the waistline). Try to avoid letting your
feet rest on the floor, even for a moment.
Focus on slow controlled movement and
try squeeze more on your abs at the end
of the motion. Make sure to tighten your
tummy during the whole workout. Don’t
cheat yourself by using momentum!
Abs workout
Step 3: Breathing and Ending Position
Exhale at the point when you are pulling
your knees to your chest, and begin
inhaling slowly as you bring it back to the
starting position. Well done! You’ve just
done a good exercise for your upper and
lower abs!
Step 4: Good Tips
Perform 3 sets of this exercise with 15
to 20 repetitions each set. Take at least
2 minutes break in between each set.
Perform the particular exercise at least 2
times per week with alternately. Always be
sure to ask for an assistant for an effective
and secure exercise. Never attempt to
hold your breath as it may lead to a serious
harm to yourself such as heart attack.
Remember to drink plenty of water.
Ending position
It takes BRAIN and BRAWN to SPAWN the best in life!

KCC Social Table Tennis Group
This group was formed about three months ago
and over 25 KCC Members including some of
their children have participated. The Club has
allocated the aerobic room for us which is not
exactly suitable but at the present time we do
not have much choice. It has been mentioned in
the near future we will be granted a more suitable area in the Club. We intend to install a ping
pong machine and purchase one more table
once we attain a fixed venue. There are quite a
few good players who are very keen but would
need to practice more. At the present time, social games are from 8am to 9:30am on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Fridays it’s from
5pm to 8pm. We will approach other clubs for
inter-club competitions when the time is right.
We thank everyone for their kind participation
and support.

This month we have an additional evening session for those
who are not available on Wednesday lunchtimes.
NEW
Wednesday, 8 October – 7pm – Meeting Room
The premise is our bodies function like a computer – we are
either on or off – strong or weak to any given issue. The Yuen
Method helps us identify issues and then by eliminating them
we can release physical symptom, emotional issues, fears,
phobias, and limitations.
Posters with details of our talks will also be displayed on the
Club notice boards.
Elke Huber – Practical session on stretching
and exercises
We welcome everyone to join these events – survivors, family, and carers.
With many years of helping to alleviate pain and discomfort,
Elke has a wealth of knowledge, combined with practical and
simple solutions.
Additional dates for your diary:
Easy to learn and able to release stresses and tension in just
10 minutes, these are very beneficial and important in the relief of back pain and headaches.
As this is a practical session, please wear loose and comfortable clothing.
