These always bring a touch of colour to the Club for which the General Committee and I am sure, the membership at large, are extremely grateful. Congratulations are due this month to the Cricket Section for winning the T20 Premier League Competition for the first time in KCC’s history. In fact, the Section, in the capable hands of Matt Collins, and his committee have had an incredibly successful season also winning the Sunday Championship with the Infidels. The Junior Development Programme goes from strength to strength under the leadership of our Head Coach, Ryan Campbell and all of this augurs well for the future. On the development front, preparatory work related to the tender exercise for the roof waterproofing project, continues. Given that we are entering the rainy season, this project may take longer to complete than was originally envisaged with a corresponding impact on the Coffee Shop and Office accommodation projects. In closing, I would remind Members of the need to be tolerant of others. Recently, we have encountered a number of unpleasant exchanges around the Club particularly, in the Bar. The General Committee takes a dim view of these encounters and will not hesitate to refer incidents to the Disciplinary Committee. Enjoy the Club! Robin Gill 2 GM’s Column Dear Members, form of WOK (What’s On at KCC) but it could be stand-alone news items. I would like to remind Members that you are not permitted to give your membership card to anyone else (including relatives) for them to use at KCC. Also this is a very serious breach of Club rules and can result in disciplinary action being taken. If you are meeting a guest at the Club, please remember to ask them to wait in the reception area until you arrive and to register them in the registration book. Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated. As always, see you around the Club! FOOD & BEVERAGE Wine of the month Hecht & Bannier, Languedoc Rouge AOC, 2012 France Languedoc is blended by the most brilliant fruits of Syrah, with the tasty Grenache from Roussillon. It’s a fruity wine, a Mediterranean wine but stays fresh and thirst-quenching. HK$35 per glass • HK$155 per bottle Hecht & Bannier, Languedoc Blanc AOC, 2012 France Languedoc Blanc is a blend of two southern varietals which complement each other: Piquepoul Blanc and Roussanne. The Piquepoul Blanc brings this crunchy and vivid character, which, blended with the Roussanne citrus fruits and white flowers notes, complete perfectly the aromatic pallet and give us a delightful volume in mouth. HK$35 per glass • HK$155 per bottle 4 Beer of the month Hahn Premium Hahn Premium is a crisp premium lager with a bitter hoppy taste and a clean bitter finish. This European style full strength lager has been compared to a northern German Pilsener by its brewers. The Premium Lager does not have the strong hoppy aroma of a full Pilsener but don’t let this stir you from enjoying this crisp premium beer. Best served fairly cold (but not freezing!), Hahn Premium soothes the palate with a smooth body and finishes in a clean bitter bite. KCC were brilliantly represented by six players: Jamie Atkinson (Captain), Waqas Barkat ( Vicecaptain), Roy Lamsam, Kinchit Shah, Ehsan Nawas and Najeeb Amar. We were also represented by Club coach Ryan Campbell who was the National Batting Coach. Ireland and Zimbabwe, the team lost traction and suffered from nerves in early losses to Nepal and Afghanistan. The team then finally showed their true selves with a brilliant win against Test nation Bangladesh to finish the tournament on a high and show the world how good Hong Kong cricket is. It also should be noted that this squad has also gained One Day International status for the next four years. After a terrific warm-up in Sri Lanka and Dubai, which included wins against Netherlands, Submitted by Pictured above are six KCC players and coach Ryan, who represented Hong Kong at the “ICC World Twenty20” in Bangladesh earlier this month. It is hugely impressive to have six players and the coach from KCC all representing Hong Kong in a World Cup event, and moreover, the team did all of Hong Kong proud when they beat Bangladesh, a testplaying nation, in their home ground. Having won the toss, Farooq chose to bat. We had a good start from Ashish who scored 24 and Mohammad Tartars vs. Pakistan Association 29 March 2014 On 29 March, Tartars played Pakistan Association. The game started 45 minutes late so the number of overs were reduced to 28. Pakistan Association batted first and as soon as we started, we had action. With the very first ball of the match, Ehsan Nawaz, our young current international (who had just returned from Bangladesh after playing in the game for Hong Kong when we beat the home side), bowled the Pakistan Association opener and then quickly removed the number 3 batsman in his 2nd over. Khan who gave him good support with 24 runs but was unlucky to get out leg-before. Then there was a very good innings from Farooq, scoring an unbeaten 96. Ninad Shah batted well and gave very good support with 20 runs. In total, Tartars scored 206 runs for w5 from their allotted 35 overs. Ninad again bowled well and took 3 wickets for 27 runs. He had great support from Suhaib Ahmed. Two youngsters, Osama and Surin, both bowled well with Osama taking 2 wickets on his debut for the Tartars. Taipan were eventually all-out for 142 runs after 30.2 overs. Tartars started batting well with Ashish and Hersh, who scored 27 runs in 5 overs. Unfortunately, the rain began to come down very strongly and the game had to be abandoned. It was a great pity. The rain did not stop and there was no result. Submitted by Farooq Saeed HKCA SUNDAY CHAMPIONSHIP KCC Infidels – League Champions All the other bowlers, Mustafa, Afzaal Haider and Ninad Shah, bowled well especially in getting Tanvir Afzaal, who had scored 77, out. We finally got Pakistan Association all-out for 111 runs in 23.5 overs. KCC Maidens March proved to be a disappointing month for the Maidens, slumping to fifth place as the T/20 League wrapped up the Ladies’ season. On a far more positive note, the commitment of a core group of players throughout the year, where team has struggled at times for numbers, must be recognised. Rida Haider, Maheen Haider, Ahmad Anum, Amy Lai and Allyson Ko attended over 75% of games and training sessions throughout the season. Well done – KCC is proud of you! There is a strong sense of excitement in Maheen, Rida, Amy and Anum the air as we now focus on strengthening the team for the 2014-2015 season. We have definitive plans for raising awareness of existing Club members, recruitment and development so that the Maidens become a major pillar of strength in the Ladies’ game in the long term. Submitted by Allyson Ko 7 MINI HOCKEY GSIS All-Star 2014 HOCKEY I was invited to umpire some of the GSIS AllStar games this year but they did not assign any umpiring work to me so I was able to watch our players who joined the competition this year from outside. I can gauge the level of our KCC players by observing players from other clubs. Bibi Cordero played for U12 and did play better than I expected; and Raul Deepak, Henry Law and Zamara Bibi Cordero, our U10 players really made a lot of good passes and clear tackling and guided their teams to the finals of each age group but they did not get any individual prizes for their hard work. We had sent names of 12 players who would be joining the event – six players each from U10 and U12 but unfortunately one of our key players of U12 Ian Heung was injured before the games and wasn’t able to join. It was really good experience for all our players and an opportunity to improve specially for Zamara, Raul and Henry who were really able to play for KCC U12 in Khalsa mini tournament and helped U10 win the tournament. For my part, as a coach, I honestly nominate our KCC players to be the best players of their teams during the GSIS All-Star this year. Tournament Result U12 Players 1. U12 Shun Yeung Team Captain Team: Japan Result: 3rd Place These places are very limited and it is an honour to get selected to play on this day. The players who get chosen are deemed to be the most promising players in their age group in Hong Kong. U12 Jamie Cheng Team: India Result: 1st Place Players were allocated a team, based on strength and preferred position. Each team was then set up based on reasonably equal ability, and named after a country. There were four teams in each age group (U10s and U12s), each team playing all other teams, and the top two teams playing in the finals. U10 Raul D. Surtani Team: France Result: 3rd Place All KCC Star players participated with effort and good sportsmanship, showing respect all times, were able to produce good hockey, and took the opportunity to extend their range of skills and tactics while playing alongside players from other clubs and schools. Congratulations to Harold! Prepared by Helena Tse MEN’S HOCKEY KCC C Division 3 Champions With 11 wins and 3 draws from 16 games the KCC C team dominated Division 3 of Hong Kong Men’s Hockey League. The KCC C team finished the season 7 points clear on top of the table and have been promoted to Division 2 for next year. The KCC A team and KCC B team both finished mid-table and the KCC now has teams in each of the top three divisions providing great competition and an exciting pathway for players to prove themselves and reach the top levels of HK hockey. An exciting 12 season awaits KCC hockey next year. The C team led from start to finish, losing only two games all year. They were expertly led by Hau who has a great combination of youth and experience. The top two leading goal scorers for the Club, Jamie Collaco and Ken Wong, were mainstays of the team and continue to score as the knockout tournaments begin. KCC A, B and C teams are all progressing in their knockout cups. The B team are through to the semifinals and looking to end the season on a high. The C team have been relentless, including an 8-0 win to be the clear favourites for the Division 4/3 cup. The D team have been knocked out of their cup and their season ended in a heroic double overtime gutsy display. An admirable season finishing mid-table, and amazingly being able to play 90% of their games at 8:15am at the KCC – an achievement that should be recognised. The D team have had such an influence this season that the bar now opens at 9:30am on a Sunday! (This is not an official KCC notice). Never mind the Sevens, here’s the KCC FOOTBALL For those who were worried about anarchy in Bangkok, you can rest assured that the City of Angels is still an oasis of chaotic calm. And whilst some of the bars were pretty vacant, it only took a few of the KCC tour party to create the liveliest Sunday scene on Sukhumvit. A change of schedule and a clash with some rugby event in Hong Kongmeant that this year’s touring party was somewhat depleted when compared to the casts of thousands that the KCC Football section has taken to Bangkok in recent years. Nonetheless, the 2014 vintage featured a full-bodied quality and a fruity bouquet that provided rich bottom notes and a satisfying finish. Gracing the tour par ty for the first time, Darren“Candy Crush” Yan, “Del Boy”Schillaci and Dan “Donkey Kong” Schick were quick to catch on to the tour code, after first serving the obligatory apprenticeship of press-ups on airport floors, airplane aisles and shuttle bus jump-seats. Several tour veterans who should have known better were soon in on the act, and by Monday Donkey Kong was not the only tour member with rippling pectorals – even if his arms are still wider than Rudi “Clark Kent” Chan’s legs. Friday evening saw the tour curtain-raiser, the interport match against the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, who sportingly fielded a “socially-oriented” side, having observed that the KCC were relying on octogenarians Gary “Rab C Nesbitt” and Jon “The Duke” McKinley to make up the numbers. Playing for the BrunoRuegg Cup, the KCC put a firm 14 hand on the crystal trophy, with Anthony “Eskimo”Garreau and Boris “Tweedledee”Kam netting in quick succession to give the greenand-whites a 2-0 advantage. But as the octogenarians tired and the substitutes pretended to be busy with the Bangkok Post quick crossword, RBSC turned the screw and found just enough to edge the contest 3-2. To make matters worse, they even won the post-match boat race. Saturday dawned bright and sunny, with a pleasant 35 degree heat warming the limbs of the assembled 20-strong KCC squad, now divided into Dragons (to contest the RBSC 7-a-side main tournament) and Royals (to contest theglobally far more significant RBSC 7-a-side masters’ tournament). As we assembled, we heard the good news – and the bad. First, the good news: inspirational figures Luca “Dolmio”Merlone and Dave “Foghorn Leghorn” Christmas had flown in the previous evening and would lead the Dragons and Royals respectively in their usual loquacious manner. But the bad news was bad, very bad. Due to the election scheduled for the following day, Bangkok would be“dry” for 36 hours – no beer to be served from midday Saturday to midnight Sunday, and worse, no free Chang beer at the (Chang beer-sponsored) Sevens. It was a morose band that trudged out of the Ruamchitt Plaza. It may be that Mally“Old Fonze” Leigh was also morose, but as he was staying in purpose-built accommodation at the Sofitel, his mood was probably lightened by the fact that he had a minibar. Swallowing their disappointment, the KCC teams promptly went out and showed the Cox’s Road spirit by ripping through their qualifying groups. The Dragons won all three matches, with Dolmio scoring at least one in each. After an uncertain start, the Royals showed that they were no slouches, and with Adrian “Agassi”Geaves on fire, battered their final opponents of the day 4-1, with The Duke, Agassi and Del Boy all on target, together with Old Fonze’s guest Gareth “Cyrus the Virus”Woodhead. Spirits restored, spirits were also restored at the Ruamchitt Plaza, where the upstairs bar had tired of the prohibition and were busy running down their stock of Singha for the benefit of thirsty footballers (and Rab C). A similar story unfolded at the venue for the Saturday night tour dinner, awards ceremony and court sessions, where the evening was anything but dry, especially for those who fell fowl (ouch!) of Judge Foghorn Leghorn’s classically random and venal verdicts. The next day, Sevens Sunday saw another flawless sky and another set of fine performances by the KCC contingent. The Dragons blasted through to the quarter finals of the Cup competition (Dolmio’s greed for goals showing no bounds) only to lose on a penalty shoot-out to the host side. In the Masters’ tournament, the Royals slipped into uncharted waters with a victory in the Cup quarter-finals, this time on the right end of a penalty shoot-out thanks to the composure of Donkey Kong and Del Boy. The semis proved just a little too much for the by 15 FOOTBALL now depleted Royals, and although they were buoyed by a cameo appearance from section supremoShyamNainani, Siam Senior grabbed the only goal of the match to send us to the RBSC pool. Yes, the swimming-pool– not some sort of repechage. With half the tour party now heading for the airport, it was left to the mop-up team to take over for the Sunday evening rituals of group sing-along (thank you E s k i m o), E n g l i s h Pre m i e r L e a g u e drink-a-long (thank you Prav“Bald Eagle”Bhar waj, whose designated drinking player was the entire Tottenham team – get there early next time, Bald Eagle) and final sweep of the strip, which had by now abandoned the “dry” idea wholesale. Once again, a stunning success but with little to show for it except Shyam’s 670 unedited Zenfolio pages, some natty Clinical Knights make short work of Corinthians KCC Knights 3 : Corinthians 0 Raz Dansanghani: “It was the best performance I’ve ever seen him make”; Howard Leung: “Amazing Defending Man”; Ian Nelson: “Vincent Kompany would have been proud of that”;The Sunday Times said: “This man knows no bounds”; The FIFA Ballon d’Or Committee said: “Maybe we need to rethink Cristiano Ronaldo’s award” and Mike Tyrell said “Thank-you”.The Knights needed a strong defensive performance and on Sunday they got exactly that from their enigmatic no-nonsense central defender Phil-Mofo “Should have gone Profo” Clamp. In the first half the Knights struggled to generate their usual passing game due to the Corinthians resorting to a defensive 4-5-1 (some would say they were scared) meaning that working the ball through midfield was a tough ask. Needless to say, the four Hoof-Meisters at the back resorted to a direct style of play, seeking to by-pass the midfield. The opposition back four struggled to 16 cope with the Knights front two and gifted a free-kick midway through the first half which Hin “Goal Machine” Mok duly curled around the wall into the bottom corner of the net. The rest of the half was a tough battle with a lot of work needed from the central midfield two of Francesco “Italian Passion” Greco and Adrian “Matt-twochefs-Ski” to win and keep the ball from the opposing three central midfielders. Come the half-time break the Gaffer read the riot act and demanded more from the team in the second half, and they delivered exactly that; but not before a couple of scares from the opposition. One shot was heading straight for the bottom corner, but somehow Howard “Stretch Armstrong” Leung managed to touch it to the side with Razzamataz “The Rock” Dansanghani clearing the danger. Moments later, the Knights found themselves exposed again thanks to a pinpoint through-ball which found the Corinthians striker one-on-one with caps from the RBSC and Del Boy’s altered physique. A big thanks to Eskimo and Dolmio for all their hard work in setting things up, and to Foghorn Leghorn for some inspired adjudication. Someone mentioned that it had rained at the Sevens. For the KCC, it was a holiday in the sun. Tour Veteran the keeper; but thankfully in the time it took the Corinthians player to set himself to strike, Phil Clamp sprinted 20yards and lunged infront of the inbound shot to save the Knights blushes and to keep the best defensive record in the Yau Yee intact. Following this spell of pressure, the manager made a self-proclaimed “inspired substitution” to bring himself on in central midfield!Almost immediately, Mike “I AM the best” Tyrrell got hold of the ball and fired towards star-man Hin Mok who slid the ball across to Bryn “Billy Crystal” Solomon who sped past three opposition defenders and slid the ball past the keeper. With a few minutes left in the half, the Knights stalwart captain marvellous, Ian “Look after your car Mister” Nelson cleared the ball up-field and Hin Mok again proved his worth by impressively bringing the ball under control and slotting into the back of the net. Goals Hin Mok x 2 Bryn Solomon Man of the Match Phil Clamp MoFo Bun-fight at the KP Corral KCC Royals 1 : The Shooters 1 A match that came close to degenerating into the Bun-fight at the KP Corral ended honours even after the Shooters toe-punted in a close-range equaliser to cancel out Anthony ‘Eric’ Garreau’s header from a Paolo ‘Pirlo’ Giannelli f re e -k i c k. A l ate w i th d rawa l f ro m Paulinho McGunnigle and the continued absence of former charismatic manager Dave ‘Last’ Christmas (remember him?), meant that the Royals had a bare 13 for this league encounter; although the bench was a comfortingly aggressive sight, as Peter ‘Ballsy’ McMillan and Fred ‘Umbrella’ Cheung spent the first half doing a static warm-up that was only marginally less energetic than the Royals’ rather lacklustre display. The highlights of the first half were Gary ‘the Gutteral’ Luttrell rattling the cross-bar from six yards and Adrian ‘Robocop’Townsend taking one for the team in the only unpadded area on his body. The second half trundled uneventfully on until ‘Eric’ leapt to apply his perfectly shaped head and shoulders to Pirlo’s deftly flighted free kick. This stung the Shooters into a frenzy, and either side of their toe-in for 1-1, a number of X-rated tackles flew in; first on Robocop (yellow card), then, unwisely, on Ballsy (no yellow card – fair enough) and finally on ‘Eric’ (definite yellow card). Tempers were getting shor ter than Umbrella’s Lai See packet distribution Ol’ Big Ead returns to mastermind victory in Cox’s Road Derby KCC Royals 3 : USRC Experience 1 “Fahy’s a jolly good fella......Oh Joe he isn’t”– Great Managers in the past have often been quoted as saying “Football is a game of two halves”, and the greatest Manager of them all, Royals’ Manager Dave Christmas confirmed that this is definitely the case after witnessing the referee blow his whistle to signal half time on Fridaynight. KCC Royals faced a tough challenge as they wandered out onto the pitch to face league leaders USRC Experience. Midfield corporal Paolo Giannelli was last to take the field and there was immediate concern over his lack of preparation. When questioned if he was ready to start the match, Giannelli returned with an enthusiastic shrug of the shoulders and a stare into space. KCC Royals started the match on the front foot with Rigby slotting comfortably in at left back. It was like the Pipkins Pigsound-alike had never been away. Within 5 minutes his opponent’s shin had been mistaken for the ball and the USRC No. 7 was seen gliding through the air. Rigby’s determination stirred the Royals and on 20 minutes, Geoff “Argghhhh” Ho linked well with Mr. ‘please make sure you have the right information Mister Xmas before you write the match report’ Skilo to deliver an inch-perfect cross to tempt big Joe Fahy to rise like a crab and loop the ball over the helpless USRC keeper. Geoff could hardly contain his excitement and this was demonstrated as he performed a double roll on the ground followed by a faultless clutch to his ankle. As half time approached, Christmas glanced to the touchline to draw inspiration from the Bench; however, he could only see Fred, Ballsy, Rowan and Gary. With changes made at half time, Fahy was pushed up front; replacing Skilo who was feeling a bit “tight”…this was confirmed when he later left the bar without buying a drink. Fahy showed his aerial dominance by meeting a Merlone corner with his head and directing the list, and Steve ‘Mitch’ Pratt managed to turn the heat up with a Big Daddy splash on the prone Shooters centre back that nearly led to World War III breaking out (yellow card). With the referee hoisting the white flag and blowing for full time five minutes early, there was just enough good will left on the pitch for the two teams to restore peace in our time, handshakes all round and back to the bar for an Asahi or two, where we voted Gautam ‘Slider’ Daswani man of the match marginally ahead of Umbrella, whose second half header off the line was a thing of beauty. Goal Anthony Garreau Man of the Match Gautam Daswani Neville Chamberpot ball into the back of the net. His joy was short lived as a tussle with an opponent saw Fahy leave the field. The TV replay (together with an expert lip reader) confirmed that Fahy responded with a push and the riposte “so are you” after receiving an unforgivable, cutting insult of “you’re a sissy”. The Royals reacted well and a neat Merlone finish secured the three points. A late disputed USRC penalt y lef t Christmas with the statistic that it was scored when he was off the pitch…food for thought. Later after the game, Skilo offered to make a Made-to-Measure suit for the Greatest Manager in the World – free of charge. Local tailors, however, have found it almost impossible to source enough material to cover the backside of Ol’ Big Ead’s trousers and elastic for the waistband. True to his upbringing, he took off with a commanding lead boasting to his opponent that even if he lost one or two shots each end from now on, he would still win the game. The opponent skip, Songsin, a top national and exKCC bowler quietly and patiently made a come back to beat farmer Fung on the last end. She received two kisses from her admirer Bob, as promised half way through the game, if she won. A real treat because as a bonus it kept CF shut for two full hours! All other KCC rinks won with CF receiving the wooden spoon yet again, a record three times in a row together with earlier club competitions. To be fair, the Bangkok bowlers had probably not experienced such a heavy green before and battled hard in the game. Two o’clock on a wet Saturday afternoon our GM Greg Hartigan appeared on the bowling green believing he had the most photogenic face for the group photo shoot. Little did he realise that in Asia we work on IST (Indian Stretchable Time) as expressed by Bob. Linda added, same as in Phillipines – PST. Our Thai guests were slowly trickling in. Getting the message, Greg returned twenty minutes later well in time for the photograph. 18 After a few drinks, off to the Fincher room for an elaborate buffet and some wonderful dancing music that kept all on their feet. Our thanks to Richard for the music, Patrick, Mary and the organising committee for the event. Next year, let’s have a big contingent to Bangkok. We all know that they are extremely good hosts. So mark it in your diary. Cheers! The Indian 19 LAWN BOWLS Convenor’s Column Tiger Bowls 2014 on 15 and 16 March A total of 72 teams entered into this twoday tournament. KCC sent three men’s teams and one ladies’ team to participate. One of the men’s teams, consisting of Li Ying Wing, Patrick Fong, Kenny Ng and Danny Ho, finally won the 1st runner-up in the Cup competition. Tai Mo Shek Trophy and Ching Ming Plate on 5 April 2014 It was pleasing to see that the weather was fine on the day as well as 31 players to participate. Having taken group photos, games started at 9:15am and finished at 6:30pm (without lunch break!!). Both final games were played very well and were very exciting. The finalists performed at very high standard and attracted over 30 spectators. The results were as follows: Tai Mo Shek Trophy: C F Fung (winner) and Louis Cook (runner-up) Ching Ming Plate:Clif f Imeson (winner) and Alan Cheung (runner-up) 20 End of Triples League Dinner on 5 April 2014 Having completed the tiring Tai Mo Shek Trophy competition, all players prepared for the end of Triples League dinner. After showers, we moved to the Japanese Restaurant to enjoy food and singing. Although it was Ching Ming Festival, more than 50 participants turned up. We started to enjoy food and drinks from 7:30pm, then sang and danced from 9:30pm until midnight. Patrick Fong Convenor Men’s A Team We are the Champions! In my previous report I mentioned that“if we can take maximum points in the last game, we are sure the Champion Trophy will be in our hands”. As we have played our last game against KBGC-Ain advance, our actual last game was away at CCC on 8 February. As Mike and Danny were away we brought in our mighty substitutes Chadwick and Bob. They both had a comfortable win against Lee Ka Ho and Robin Chok, but only saw Jimmy’s team lose by 2 shots. In the end it was a 6-2 win. That made us 8 points ahead of second place KBGC-B with aggregate +9. KBGC-B played their last game against CCC-A on 22 Februar y. They could overtake us as champion if they beat CCC-A by 8-0 and by more than 9 shots. It was a very tight and exciting game that KBGC-B only managed to win by 6-2. Celebrations included champagne and “ring the bell” by our deputy captain Jimmy as thanks to everyone who support us. I would like to pay tribute to all who represented the KCC Men’s A Team in the Triples League this season: Bernard Leung, Timmy Kwong, Jimmy Chiu, Kenny Ng, Li Ying Wing, Mike Dowie, Sebastian Cheung, Ken Chan, Danny Ho; Substitutes – Chadwick Chan, Bob Mehta. Danny Ho A Team Captain That will be a historic record for the Club as well as for the sport of lawn bowls in Hong Kong. Furthermore, our second target is to assist C Team to get promoted to upper division. Last but not least, B Team will fight hard to achieve crown champion for ourselves as well. With the support of the bowlers and the Club, we are looking forward to achieving these goals this year successfully. David Leung Men’s B Team The Premier League has been scheduled to commence on 3 May 2014. In accordance with the fixture, B Team would be away to play at four different public artificial greens, including Ap Lei Chau, Siu Lek Yuen, Victoria Park and Tai Po, in the upper season of the league only. We have been fully prepared by arranging practice sessions for the players at those greens before the competition. As a warming up for the team, a friendly game between B Team and C Team has been planned before the league on 26 April at home. This year, our primary target is to support the Men’s A Team to achieve the crown champions for the third consecutive year at Premier League Division 1. B Team Captain Men’s C Team Pre-season Encouragement The C Team played CSD-A in a pre-season friendly game at KCC on 6 April. I am encouraged by our team’s performance as we earned a very credible 4 - 4 draw against a higher division team. Our opponents expressed their appreciation of our KCC hospitality and our players’ friendliness. They also expressed a desire to make this game an annual pre-season event. Well done to all who took part and thanks to Dad A Detta for his arrangements with CSD. Players for this year’s team included three newly joined junior subscribers – former Hong Kong Junior Champion Ivan Fung, reigning Boys U17 Junior Champion Ling to Yu (JS), former top junior player Hugo Ho – together with Nelson Chan (team convenor), Alex Chu, Wan Tsz Ho and sporting subscriber Neal Soo. Before the start of the season, we knew it was going to be tough as we had to face our two toughest opponents – the USRC and HKFC respectively. Both clubs had strong teams that were capable of competing in the league title with us. Before playing the last match against Young Players from the Hong Kong Sports Institute, we were still one point behind USRC, who remained at the top of the table for a lmost the entire season with HKFC. However, with the tremendous effort produced by our boys in the last match against Young Players, we were able to get a 5-0 victory whilst HKFC clinched a 4-1 victory against USRC. As a r esult, we won the league title, thanks to the “help” of HKFC. On behalf of the team, I would like to say thank you to Perrier, our title sponsor, for giving us lots of assistance throughout the season. Also, thanks must be given to our Squash Section Convenor, Captain, Sub-committee and other members’ unyielding support throughout the year. Without their support, we would not be able to achieve such a remarkable result. The atmosphere was electric and carnival-like at the same time, with five teams competing. Team members had come with their friends and families to cheer them along. The invited teams were H.I.T, HK Electric, LRC, KCC and HKFC. The game format was unique since it gave opportunities to players of at least 40+ to show off their skills. Each team played round robin in five categories. 1) Men’s doubles 80+ (each player at least 40 years of age). Anoop Nainani and Ken Wong, our two strongest players, teamed up. They did not disappoint and made a clean sweep, winning all their matches. 2) Men’s doubles 90+ (each player 45 years of age). Michael headed this group and won two of the four matches. So a good result. 3) Men’s doubles 100+ (each player 50 years of age). It turned to be a good contest with Herbert and Deepak. Initially struggling to find form, both of them stuck to their task and found their footwork against old foes HKFC. 4) Mixed doubles, obviously had to have none other than Liza Wong, who dazzled her opponents with her charming smile and of course talent, with her doubles partner to get an even result. 5) Ladies’ doubles also showed that the KCC ladies are up to the challenge when needed of them. Coach Liew stood on the sidelines encouraging his team. The results with more wins in this tournament showed his immense dedication and coaching of the KCC team. Coach Liew’s mantra “don’t lift and don’t give easy chance to the opponent” was followed by the team. All in all, a good day for the KCC team and great work again from Anoop Nainani and Ken Wong. KCC badminton is showing signs as an emerging team in the Inter-club circuit. Badminton society has some promising young players such as Alison, Brandon, Chris, Derrick, Eugene, Tarun, Neil, Lucas and Vivek.
