Synopsis of the General Committee Meeting held on 12 July 2016
1.
The new LED scoreboard on the Main Ground should
be completed by the end of July; not June as previously
reported.
2.
A Consultant needs to be hired at a cost of $20,000 to assist
the Club to finalize the replacement floor surface in the
Sports Hall and the proposed curtain divider.
12. Tw o P a r t n e r C a r d a p p l i c a t i o n s w e r e a p p r o v e d ,
1 membership of a late husband was transferred to his wife,
and 1 suspended membership was further extended for
6 months on medical grounds.
13. $103,000 was approved for PCCW to install a new telephone
system with a 2 year warranty.
The relevant Government Departments have queried
the Club’s intention to increase the maximum number
of permitted Members by 200 wishing to see concrete
measures that the increased number is not a vehicle to
make profit by selling additional corporate certificates.
14. The Town Planning Board will meet on 22 July to discuss the
Club’s appeal against the condition to build a grass roof.

No date can yet be set for an EGM to increase the number
of SSs.
16. A Member was suspended for 1 month for abuse of the car
parking rules.

The Club continues to negotiate with the Hong Kong Cricket
Association regarding the Cricket Sixes. A definitive decision
as to whether the tournament will go ahead in late October
at the KCC is expected by the end of July.
17. The meeting approved the installation of an additional
electronic notice board at the main entrance of the Club and
The Boundary Café at a cost of approximately $8000 each.

The Contrex Squash Tournament recently held in the
Club was a success with several Club Members producing
excellent performances.

$86,000 was approved for a new multi-function exercise rack
for the Fitness Centre.
The Boundary Café was reserved for a Dinner Theatre on
24 September.
The Club has a total of $32,987,000 in its cash/bank balances
at the end of June.
10. Thirty-seven late payment warning letters had to be sent
out in June to Members who had not paid their dues by the
required time.
11. Four changes to Corporate Nominees, 2 OVMs (including
1 child of a Member), 2 SSs, and 5 JSs were admitted into
the Club. One SVM, 1 OVM, 1 SS, and 4 CNs resigned, whilst
1 OVM passed away.

15. $2,192,026 was approved for refurbishment work to the
Fincher Room and Grill Room including air-conditioning.
18. The m eet ing ap p roved a $20,000 sub sidy for the
forthcoming Rio Carnival Night.
19. A Veteran’s Hockey Tournament was approved on the Main
Ground on 13 August in memory of Con Conway.
20. A Level 1 Cricket Coaching course was approved to be held
on the Main Ground over the 13-14 August.
21. Cricket players are permitted to use the Swimming Pool
changing rooms and the 1/F Pool building (for F&B) with the
proviso that no spikes be worn whilst inside the building.
Twelve out of a possible 15 members attended the meeting.
This synopsis is subject to the approval of the minutes, upon
which it is based, at the next GC meeting to be held on
9 August 2016. Sensitive matters and decisions relating to named
individuals have been omitted.

Dear Members,
First of all a word of encouragement. 40 year old golfer Henrik
Stenson said, upon recently winning his first Major, the Open at
Troon, that 40 is the new 30. Whatever your age, does this not
make you feel younger? Stay active.
The participating squash players certainly did so at the Contrex
Challenge Cup which took place at the Club in early July. I would
like to congratulate some outstanding performances from
our players, the standout effort being that of Yeung Ho Wai in
the men’s division, who having come through qualifying was
narrowly beaten in the semi-final. Our ladies Lee Ka Yi who was
runner up, and Ho Ka Po who lost to the eventual winner Andrea
Lee of Malaysia, also deserve special mention. My thanks also to
all those were involved in the staging and running of this event,
both from inside and outside the Club, to make it such a success.
I would like to congratulate another squash player, who has been
playing league squash for the Club for more than three decades,
for an accolade he has received, the Bronze Bauhinia Star. This
is Dr. Chan Siu Kun, Alex, whose citation is for meritorious public
and community service. Alex has also been a diligent servant of
the Club, giving his expert advice on many development projects.
When you experience the cool effect of the air-conditioning,
remember his part in ensuring that this operates efficiently. Well
done, Alex!
Committee for all of the work they have done so far, including
their efforts on the above application.
You will recall that in November of last year proxy voting
provisions were brought before our members but were not
passed. We need to introduce these into our constitution to
comply with the Companies Ordinance, and we are presently
reviewing the draft changes with a view to bringing these before
you again as soon as practicable. I and other members of your
General Committee welcome your views, so please feel free to
talk to one of us should you wish to do so. In the meantime, we
have decided that we should deal with the proxy voting matter
first, before bringing before you the proposed changes to the
Sporting Subscriber scheme, so these have been placed on hold
for the time being.

Talking of potential development projects, on 22nd July the Town
Planning Board rejected the Club’s application, in relation to the
Board’s 5th February 2016 approval, for the relaxation of their
imposed grass planting condition on the whole roof area of the
proposed new sports building, the effect of which would prevent
the Club from having artificial surfaced tennis courts on the
roof. This is obviously very disappointing. We are awaiting the
Board’s written reasons, which we will of course need to look at
closely, and we will keep you informed about our recommended
way forward. I would like to commend our Development Sub-

Dear members,
In early August, the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil start with
the Opening Ceremony slated for Friday August 5th commencing
at 7pm Brazil time or 8am Saturday August 6th in Hong Kong. At
this time we are not sure the ceremonies will be shown, however
assuming they will be, KCC will be showing the Opening and
Closing ceremonies as well as the events daily in the Bar on
the big screen. We will advise you of the opening and closing
ceremonies by WOK before these ceremonies take place.
Swimming Pool. The swimming pool is in full operation and
ready and waiting for you and your family to come on down for
a fun day at the pool. We have purchased new pool loungers
perfect for an afternoon snooze by the pool. The food and
beverage service is now open 7 days a week to meet you and
your family’s needs. Enjoy!
Live Music in the Main Bar. We now are enjoying every
Thursday night in the Pavilion Restaurant live music featuring a
variety of artists (usually one or two piece) for you to enjoy. The
last Thursday of every month we add a few more instruments
and create the full band. These are fun nights to attend and
reservations are recommended as these Thursday nights are very
popular.
Dim Sum on the last Wednesday of each month. For the past
year and a bit we have secured the services of a Dim Sum chef
and have been serving up a delicious Dim Sum buffet lunch on
the last Wednesday of every month. We will remind you all in the
usual ways so you won’t have to remember!
Rio Carnival Night! Remember last year we held a very successful
70’s night? Well, the time has come to hold another great party…
in honor of the Olympics we are holding a Rio Carnival and it
is shaping up to be a great event to include a couple of those
famous Brazilian female dancers you see on TV and in magazines.
Mark your calendar for Saturday August 20th in The Boundary
Café and get ready for a great party.
For those wine aficionados, there will be a Barbaresco Wine
Dinner held on Friday September 23 rd in the Grill Room
Restaurant. Terry and Chef Sing will create a wonderful menu to
accompany the wonderful wines offered.
Annual Campout. This your “heads up” to mark your calendars
for the ever popular Camp Out on the Grounds! The dates this
year are Sunday October 9 and Monday October 10 (the day
after Mid-autumn festival). This popular event sells out early so
watch all the usual means of communication and as soon as we
start to accept reservations contact us right away.
Towels. I would like to thank members who have been using the
smaller “bath mat” in the Men’s and Ladies Change Rooms. These
bath mats are well received and are being used, as intended,
to stand on outside the shower. We are reducing the costs of
laundering the big towels and are of course more sanitary by
not using the bath towels on the floor. Also note that the towels
are to remain inside the change rooms at the main clubhouse
and inside the pool complex and not brought outside onto the
grounds. Please be reminded the Club’s Bye-law #23.3 (a) which
stipulates “Users (of the Change Rooms) are only allowed to take
one (1) bath towel at a time.” Please follow the staff’s instructions
in this regards.
Let’s hope that August will be hot and dry which will entice you
to come down to the club and jump into the refreshing water at
the pool….and you can enjoy our new food menu and summer
special drinks as well!

students divided into 4 groups participated at 4 different activities including Ten Pin Bowling, Squash, Ball Games in Sun Lawn
and Swimming in turn. Look forward to welcoming them in the next year.

As per Memorandum and Articles of Association of the Club,
13. The General Committee may appoint Sub-committees for such purposes as may
be deemed appropriate. Any Sub-committee shall be chaired by a member of
the General Committee and may include Members and Subscribers selected by
the Chairman of the Sub-committee and approved by the General Committee.
14. The Officers of the Club shall be ex-officio members of all Sub-committees.

Membership of the Vetting Sub-Committee consists
of 5 Members - the Club President (who chairs the
Committee) or in his absence the Vice President or
exceptionally another Officer, the Chairman of the
Sports Section Representative (SR) Sub-Committee,
one other Sports Section Representative, one
member from the Membership Sub-Committee, and
one other member from the General Committee (GC).
The Sports & Leisure Director will be in attendance
but will not have voting rights (should a vote become
necessary).
Responsibilities:
1. To meet every four months in a year to review
the exception report of those who have not
satisfied their Commitment Pledge and the
reasons provided by the SRs together with any
representations made by the Sporting Subscriber
(SS) and / or Junior Subscriber (JS) 23-27, and
decide on those who are to receive a formal
Warning Letter for failing to comply with the
terms of their Commitment Pledge.
2. In event of the SS or JS 23-27 failing to satisfy the
terms of their Commitment Pledges, including
the 75% playing requirement, without a reason
acceptable to the Vetting Sub-Committee after
receipt of an initial Warning Letter, the Vetting
Sub-Committee will make a recommendation to
the GC to terminate their subscribership.
3. The Vetting Sub-Committee has the authority
to extend the duration of the SS / JS 23-27
period in circumstances where the 75% playing
requirement has not been met, but other
factors acceptable to the Committee, have
been presented by the SR. In such cases, the
commitment period will be amended by an
addition to his or her Commitment Pledge Form.

1st KCC Ladies Collegiate Tournament

The 1 st KCC Ladies Collegiate
Tournament was successfully
held on 4 June 2016. The games
took place on KCC grass, and six
strong ladies teams participated.
Everyone had a lot of fun, and
even though there was some rain
in the morning, the sun came out.

LHT A won the championship
and LHT B was the 1st runneru p. Th e M V P a n d To p S co re r
awards both went to Lam Hoi-yan
from LHT A.

available for the players. After
the games, the players enjoyed
lunch and ten-pin bowling games
in the KCC.

Our junior KCC Hockey players marked the end of the 201516 season with a pool party and dinner on Saturday 18 June.
The occasion also gave the opportunity for our players to be
rewarded after another successful season.
certificates and trophies. Anita Ho (Girls Youth Manager), Ravi
Sethi (new Youth Convenor), AD Dad (new Captain of Hockey)
and coaches Ahmed Ewis and Popeye Dillon presented trophies
and awards to some very happy children.
After an afternoon of swimming, our players, their families
and our Hockey Section Sub-Committee came together in the
brightly decorated KCC Sports Hall. After another great buffet by
the KCC F&B team, the awards were given to our players.
It’s been another great season for our Mini’s and Youth, and
wouldn’t have been such a success without a dedicated team.
A big thanks must go to Deepak Surtani and Toby Brown, our
devoted and enthusiastic Mini Convenor and outgoing Youth
Convenor (respectively), and ‘THE’ team: Helena Tse, Jocylyn

The KCC Football Section held its AGM and Adult Awards in early June, with the theme Mexico “86”. Owing to the
large numbers in the football section, the awards were held over 3 separate events this season, and on the night of
the AGM we only celebrated the 4 four Adults teams.

Special mentions go to Sam Richardson, who after many years
supporting Ian “Jingle” Richardson and the Football Section, is
moving to the UK. We wish Sam all the very best. Also to Keith
Miu, who is moving to Beijing for work. We will definitely miss
those goals and long throws, but not as much as the “Gangnam
Style” goal celebrations!

Awards By Adrian Townson - Head of KCC Junior Girls Football
The KCC Football Section held its U14 Junior Boys, Colts
and Young Women’s Team Awards in early June at the Pavilion by
the Pool, in the third and final football Awards ceremony of the
season. The weather decided to hamper the evening, thus a quick
change of plans meant the event was split to accommodate
the large numbers attending. Still this did not dampen the
spirits, and a great evening was had celebrating our teams’
successes this season!
First up were the U13/14 boys. Gary presented a summary
of the season, and after a slideshow of the boys in action,
he presented the awards.

With nearly 400 juniors and colts players registered in the KCC Football Programme
for the 2015/16 season, congratulations go to Kaela-Mei Townson, this season’s
recipient of the James Down KCC Junior Football of the Year award. Kaela also
picked up the Managers Player of the Season Award for the KCC Young Women’s
Team, after successfully captaining them to Runners-Up place in the HKFA Jockey
Club U18 Girls League and HKFA F.A.Cup (which they narrowly lost on penalties).
This was a truly fitting end to 7 seasons playing for KCC, as Kaela will now continue
her football (and studies) in the UK from September 2016. We wish her all the very
best, but hope we can one day see her back in the famous green and white stripes!

The section members are also working on
publishing a new external KCC Football Section
website, which alongside our social media
pages will provide the hub of our online
information.
The website will be finalised over the summer,
ahead of the 2016/17 season. Alongside the
social media pages, it will help raise the profile
of the club across HK and internationally, while
acting as platform to assist in attracting new

Young Women’s Team F.A. Cup Final

The KCC Young Women's team played against Chelsea in the
HKFA Jockey Club F.A. Cup Final on 19 June. There was fantastic
support from the full squad, parents, APSS coaches and our KCC
dignitary (Thanks Shyam!)
controlled play and good passing, but KCC had battled so hard,
and for effort alone deserved the win. We commend Kaela,
Sophie, Dveeta, Nicole and Katharina for stepping forwards to
take the penalty kicks, under such pressure.
KCC had been hitting teams with quick goals all early season,
so it was a surprise that they were the ones under pressure from
the start, and with no more than 2 minutes on the clock Chelsea
broke well up the left wing, crossed in a superb ball and their
striker coolly slotted it into the far right corner of the KCC net.
This is when the game could have gone 2 ways! Was it nerves,
or lack or concentration, who knows, but fortunately KCC Young
Women are made of strong stuff and it served as a bit of a
wake-up call. They were soon pushing forwards, and after some
good work up the left wing Chloe received the ball and from
the edge of the box shot high into the top right corner of the
goal. KCC had quickly tied the game 1:1, and the team settled
down after this.
KCC had the honour of taking the first penalty, and from the tight
huddle Kaela led by example, stepping forwards and burying
the 1st kick high into the net. Chelsea converted their first kick
as well. Sophie then emerged and confidently scored with a fine
kick right of the keeper. Chelsea were rattled, and their 2nd hit
the post, spun across the goal and wide. KCC were 2:1 ahead.
Despite much good play for the remainder of the match, neither
team could break each other down, and the final score was 1:1.
To put the result into perspective, however, this was the first
game that Chelsea had not won all season!
Penalties are always a tough way to conclude a match. On the
balance of play Chelsea probably edged they game, with some
Dveeta was next, coolly slotting the ball to the keeper’s left, into
the bottom corner. Chelsea converted; it was still 3:2 to KCC.
Next up was Nicole – and despite a firm shot the ball just went
over the crossbar. Chelsea equalised. Now it was 3:3.
Katharina was KCC's final kicker and it was Chelsea's keeper to
their rescue, jsut managing to get a hand to the shot down to her
right. With the score at 3:3 we all hoped for some heroics from
Amira, but Chelsea were ruthless, and stepping up with a solid
shot they scored, winning the shoot-out 3:4.
Our Young Ladies did KCC proud, and can certainly hold their
heads high!

U14 Boys Henderson Cup Final

On a hot Sunday afternoon, the KCC U14 boys, who
had previously finished 2nd in Division 1, had a tough
game against South China at Morse Park in the HKFA
Jockey Club Youth League F.A.Cup Final. With five
regular starters missing as they were already away on
their summer vacations, they had a slow start, probably
due to nerves. But the boys then stepped up, and by
half time were winning 2-1 with good teamwork and
two superb strikes.
Unfortunately, after 5 minutes into the second half and
a loss of concentration they conceded a goal. Heads
dropped, and after a further 5 minutes they conceded
another goal. Given the heat, and after a long season
with a limited number of substitutes, the boys could not
find another goal(s).
Although they lost 3-2, it was a fantastic performance given the challenge of lacking some of their regular starters. Both Coach Phil
and I are proud of all the boys for their performances throughout the season, to finish second in Division 1 and runners-up in the
FA Cup Final.
Well done boys – and have a well deserved summer break!

what we can offer boys and girls from U6 to U18.

On 20 August, we will welcome our good friends from RBSC, for
an exciting day’s football at KCC main ground. There will be two
matches: a competitive Interport game, followed by an over 35s
social game in the afternoon.

27 August (pm)
To round off the 2016 summer events, we have our annual
Graham Archer 6-a-side tournament on 27 August. This is always
a fantastic day at the club, and a wonderful way to honour
a great man and contributor to the football section at KCC. There
will be an open invitation to teams from across the club, so if
you are interested in getting a team involved please contact me

HKFC International 3’s Title
This year, we sent a much stronger men’s team to
compete in the Hong Kong Football Club International 3’s
tournament. JS Chris Lo, a full time HK Sports Institute
athlete played as No.1, former junior champion Yeung
Ho Wai as No.2 , reigning junior champion Ng Ka Yiu as
No.3 and JS Anthony Lau as reserve.
SQUASH

After winning all 3 matches in the preliminary round in
straight games, we continued to beat the strongest team
from the host in the semi-final 2-1. In the final, we beat
Singapore Sting, without much resistance, in straight
games and took the title for the first time. Ng Ka Yiu was
elected as the player of the tournament.

After winning the ladies’ title for 2 consecutive years,
we decided to send a much younger team this year,
allowing our younger juniors to have more exposures
in international events. JS Sara Cheng and Li Sum Yi,
both 16 years of age, played as No.1 & 2 respectively,
with former Asia Junior Champion Ho Ka Po as No.3 and
veteran Elise Ng as the reserve. The team performed well
and came second only after losing to the tournament
champion, Chinese National Squad.

Eunice Tong captured
her 3rd PSA title By Aaron Yip
Eunice Tong lifted her first PSA silverware of 2016 in Penang after coming through
a tough 5 game battle with home favorite and number 1 seed Rachel Arnold in the
final of Penang Women’s Open.
Eunice was the number 2 seed and swept to the final without losing a game while
Rachel had advance to the final after prevailing over another KCC junior subscriber,
Lee Ka Yi in the semis.
Rachel had the better of the early exchanges and went a game to good before
Eunice battled back to take the next 2 games without reply. A nail biting tie-break
in a punishing fourth game then went in Rachel’s favour as she clawed back a game
to level proceedings. Rachel’s performance dropped in the fifth and deciding game
due to fatigue. Eunice took full advantage as she romped to victory for the loss of
just 3 points to a complete a 7-11, 11-7, 12-10, 10-12, 11-3 win to capture her third
PSA title of her career to date.

Unexpected thriller: social squash event at HKFC

getting very close indeed.
Next up, Hugo took on Raymond Chiu.
Although Raymond took the first game,
it was closely contested. The rallies were
never short and those watching couldn’t
understand how both players were able to
retrieve each shot so efficiently and with
ease. In the end, Hugo emerged victorious
and beat Raymond with a convincing 3-1
win. The next crucial match saw Ng Ka Yiu
face Ho Fai Chiu in a thrilling five game
head-to-head. The athleticism and charisma
of each player were a treat to watch, as each
shot was played as if it was their last. At the
end of the fourth, both players were visibly
drained but the crowd’s cheers fueled their
fire for one final game. Unfortunately, Ho
Fai Chiu just edged ahead of Ng Ka Yiu in
the final points of the game, handing HKFC
a 3-2 victory.
Another successful social squash event was held on Saturday,
June 25. We were hosted by our oldest and dearest rivals, HKFC.
We arrived blissfully unaware of the battle we had ahead of us –
as even though this was a social event, the level of competition
was just phenomenal. Everyone put their heart and soul into their
games, and many matches were reminiscent of league play-off
encounters. We certainly had our work cut out for us!
The overall lead must have changed at least a dozen times; HKFC
may have been ahead by two games but after a few minutes, KCC
were back out on top. The scoreboard was a favourite hangout for
much of the day, as people had to continually check the status of
games as well as team scores. In the end, it all came down to the
higher seeds to show off their moves and skills, and to hopefully
secure the trophy and bring it back home.
With only four matches left to play, we were neck-and-neck
with HKFC. Anything could happen. Tensions were high and the
nervous chatter from spectators and players who had completed
their matches set in. I don’t think I have ever been to a social
squash event where everyone was so enthralled by each and
every match. The atmosphere was incredible, and it only got
better as it came down to KCC’s four most talented and capable
players: Yeung Ho-wai, Ng Ka-yiu, Jacky Luen and Hugo Ho. There
was hardly any room to sit, let alone stand, as eager spectators
crammed into what small spaces they could find.
First up was Jacky, who faced HKFC’s Nathan Huillier. The speed of
this match never abated, and I’m not sure how the ball managed
to survive this five game thriller. The silence from the crowd was
deafening, only to be shattered once a point was won from either
player. Nathan scraped ahead of Jacky in the fifth and secured
glory for HKFC by only a few points, and the match ended 2-3 to
HKFC. This only spurred the KCC crowd on more to support our

and most anticipated match of the day.
KCC’s Yeung Ho-wai and HKFC’s Dick Lau didn’t seem too fussed
by the tension outside the courts and warmed up with smiles
on their faces… something didn’t seem right! However, once
time was called and the game started, both players showed off
their professionalism and expertise within the four walls of the
court. What we weren’t expecting was the humour and jokes that
came with it. There were many strokes and lets called, but the
facial expressions, appeals to the referee and gestures made the
match all the more entertaining. It was Yeung Ho-wai who took
the game 3-1 to secure KCC our overall victory. The final score
was 16-13.
After all games, our hosts treated us to a great buffet dinner, with
discussions of the matches just witnessed. This was an exciting,
fun and entertaining day of squash, shared with friends and
fellow squash enthusiasts.
Huge thanks must go to HKFC and their social convenor, Steve
Gollop, for arranging yet another spectacular afternoon. It’s
never easy to arrange these social events, and his attention to
detail and diligence certainly paid off. Thanks to all players from
both sides for putting on some excellent squash – and the most
entertaining and exciting squash I think I have ever seen. Thanks
also to all KCC squash players who came along and made the
afternoon a success, and to our supporters. Finally, thanks to
Aaron and Peter for helping with various areas of organisation
and player pairings. Hopefully, we will be able to match the great
turn out we had this time round for future social events.
We are hoping to arrange one or two more social events before
the end of 2016, so stay tuned for event notices and posters
around the Club!

Tennis Update

As at 30 June, only 4 of the 6 KCC teams had completed
their matches in the HKTA Summer League. The remaining
teams – the Men’s A+ and the Ladies A+ – were still
waiting to play their matches, which had been postponed
due to rains. Among the completed matches, of particular
interest so far were the Men’s A Division - Group II, who
came equal 2 nd with HLY and KRC, while our Men’s E
Division won the Championship of the grade.

The Captain, James Leung, considers this has been
an unbelievably good season for the E team, as they
managed to claim the championship with a record
breaking result of beating 8 teams and losing to only 1.
According to him, everyone in the team and every point
in the game count, and without the full dedication of
everyone and the excellent team spirit (built around beer
and whisky), this would
not be possible.
For this magnificent result,
the Captain expressed his
special thanks to William
Wong, Chr is Yiu and
Jessie Rao for their ultrahigh participation rate;
Harry Yuen, who always
volunteers to be the
reserve to give the team
unlimited bench support;
and – most importantly
– James wishes to thank
Tim Chen for building a very good foundation in the past years, which was the key for the team to prosper. James is
looking forward for the coming season in winter. Congratulations all!
The Subcommittee wishes to express special thanks to Jesse Panjabi for organising the juniors' participation in the
KCC Wimbledon on 4 June. Judging by the juniors’ current performance, it will not be long before they could play for
the higher grade league teams for KCC.
HK St. John Ambulance CPR/AED Provider
Course By K S WONG & Harry YUEN
This was the first class held in Cantonese at KCC. It took place
on 21 May and was attended by 11 members from the Section,
which was close to the maximum of 12 to a class. The class was
from 9am to around 4pm, and was followed by a short exam to
help us to recap the overall contents.
For this class, we were grateful to have two first class instructors
– Patrick Lee and Wong Siu Ling, who are very experienced, lively
and humorous, holding our attention and patiently guiding us.
In the morning, the course focused on CPR (Cardio Pulmonary
Resuscitation), and was conducted by lectures, demonstrations,
and then hands-on activities. The latter were performed by
teams, so that everyone had the full opportunity to try every
aspect of the course. Throughout the CPR in the morning, the
course instructors repeatedly emphasised that if this part was not
properly grasped, we could not proceed to learn AED (Automated
External Defibrillation) in the afternoon.
In the afternoon, CPR was still constantly referred to but greater
details were given on the purposes and uses of the AED.
Members of the class also worked in teams, each taking turn to
have hands-on experience with the AED.
On the whole, the course was interesting and useful. Members
enjoyed it and learned wholeheartedly. In view of the knowledge
acquired, one can be sure that a few more lives would be saved if
anything untoward happens on the Club premises.

Club’s Bye-laws

Dear Members,
The General Committee (“GC”) at its recent meeting has approved
the Sporting Subscribers (“SS”) and Junior Subscribers (“JS”) aged
23-27 Policy Document as a Bye-law. We would like to update you
how to get the relevant information from the Club’s website for
your reference.
Since the Club’s Bye-laws has its physical copy printed in January
2015, the following changes approved by GC has been in effect:• 6.1 The procedures governing Sporting Subscribership and
Junior Subscribers aged 23-27 are contained in the policy
document approved by the General Committee and must be
complied with by all Sporting Subscribers and Junior Subscribers
aged 23-27. (Approved by GC on 14 June, 2016)
• 11.1 The Hockey Section Sub-Committee (the “Sub-Committee”)
shall consist of the Hockey Representative (Chairman), Secretary,
Mens Convenor, Womens Convenor, Youth Convenor, Minis
Convenor and a maximum of 3 other registered members of the
section. (Increasing the Sub-committee by one more registered
member approved by GC on 14 June, 2016)
• 12.12 The tennis courts can be booked on the following
conditions:(a) A court may be reserved for a 60 minute period with periods
starting on the hour and not more than one period between
7-11pm shall be reserved by any one person. (Amendment of
6pm to 7pm approved by GC on 14 April, 2015)
• 25.2 (g) No free weights or other equipment are to be taken
out of the Fitness Centre. Equipment (such as mats, rollers,
fitballs, medicine balls, equalizers and rubber / thera-bands) may
only be removed from the Fitness Centre by a member with the
express permission of staff. Members must seek the advice of a
member of staff if not sure whether a piece of equipment can be
removed. In deciding whether to give permission, staff should
satisfy themselves that the member is sufficiently experienced
to use the equipment correctly and has been reminded to return
the equipment to the Fitness Centre immediately after using it.

be reminded that the staff have been asked to advise any Member
or guest when you / they are not complying with any of the Byelaws. As a Member you are expected to read and understand all

your family or your guests and could result in action by the Club’s

Information Update
Drinking Water at KCC
Dear Members,
Over many years, the club has gradually increased the number
of large Bonaqua water bottles (18.9 L) all around the club to a
level that has been deemed unacceptable by management as the
costs have risen dramatically over this time. The consumption of
these large Bonaqua water bottles is costing the club in excess of
$100,000 per year.
There is an initial capital
cost to purchase these
drinking fountains
however the payback
will be achieved within
one year.
Prior to initiating a review of the water consumption, we conducted
tests on KCC’s domestic water in August of 2015, specifically where
the main line comes off Cox’s Road into KCC property, as well as
in 6 different supply locations throughout the entire property.
The results were that in every area of the club that was tested, the
quality of the water is well within the limits established by the
Water Service Department as safe for drinking.
Another initiative
we will be instituting
is asking members
to bring along your
own water bottles.
Over time we will
be eliminating the
paper cups that come
with the Bonaqua
water bottles as an
additional saving of
$50,000 each year.
Water bottles are available for purchase in the Pro Shop.
In order to reduce expenses, we are plumbing in water lines
to various areas around the club and installing new drinking
fountains. These new drinking fountains are equipped with a state
of the art built in water purifier and all water is boiled BEFORE
dispensing. The filters will be changed every 6 months by the
supplier and management will ensure this practice is followed.
We have already installed new drinking fountains in front of the
Children’s Indoor play area, the Lawn Bowls kiosk, outside the
Sports Hall, the Men’s and Ladies changing rooms, the Swimming
Pool area, the staff canteen and the management office. The next
phase of installations will be the Fitness Centre and The Boundary
Café’s Pantry Area.
As you can see, management is committed to reducing operational
costs wherever practical and we appreciate member’s support
including our continuing efforts to “go green” with the elimination
of the paper cups.

Golfing at the Kau Sai Chau Golf South
Course on 18 June By Sanjay Nainani & Dhiraj Kundamal
Twenty four dedicated golfers played through thunder,
lightning and squally showers to complete the Kau Sai
Chau Golf South course in Hong Kong on June 18th.
They played with the drive and mindset to achieve
their best score, regardless of the weather. Each of
these devoted men and women continued to push and
strive with the goal of being crowned the next KCC Golf
Society champion, and to achieve being winner of the
day! Below are the highlights of this magnificent game.
Once again, the star of the day was Inara Sharma a young golfer who is constantly pushing herself to her
highest potential. She shot a gross score of 72, which in
turn gave her 39 Stableford points, and did so with an
impressive game, scoring 14 pars and 1 birdie.
The game’s top three players were Eric Kee, Sanjay
Nainani and Rahul Sharma. Eric Kee, an outstanding
player, finished in first place, with a total of 10 pars. He
scored a staggering 39 Stableford points, with an 82
gross score. There was a tight game between Sanjay
Nainani and Rahul Sharma, and eventually Sanjay
Nainani snatched the title of second place on a count
back, which gave Rahul Sharma – another passionate
cricketer turned golfer – third place.
A couple of other players hit some outstanding shots.
For the "Closest to Line" competition, Erle hit a dead
straight drive on Hole 14, to land the ball 5 inches from
the line. This left Sanjay Nainani startled as he was on
the 1st tee, and landed his shot 3 yards from the line.
He was sure he had won the challenge, yet was upstaged
by the aggressive drive Erle hit to claim the honours for
longest drive.
It was great to have two other ladies join the game.
Margaret Chan shot a good 29 points and Rita Leung
achieved an impressive 28 points in her debut game.
As the 2nd game being held in HK, the GS managed to
attract more debut players, including Dhiraj Kundamal,
Navin Mirpuri, Vijay Mohinani, Raju Wadhwani and
Kenneth Wong. It’s great to see many more players
joining in the games with the golf society, and we hope
to see this number continue growing as we head down
the final fairway of the season.
Johnny Cheung, Erle Pereira and Ashok Mahtani also
put in some good performance on a rather wet and
tough day – with Stableford points of 30, 29, and 27,
respectively. Ashok Mahtani also managed to win one
of the "Close to the Pin" prizes, finding good form at the
right time. Our KCC president David Brettell managed
to take a little time out of his busy schedule to make an
appearance as well. He played a rather consistent game,
but fell a bit short of form from his usual best ... perhaps
due to the new footwear he was modelling!
We had four guests players, so a small Stableford
competition was organised for them. The winner was
Prakash Nagrani. Another guest, Narender Vachani, won
one of the "Close to the Pin" prizes.

Afterward, one of the other men asked him what got into him.
"I’ve never seen you show anybody any respect."

A U.S. citizen is vacationing on his own in Ireland. He decides to play
a round of golf and is paired with three local gents.
With a big smile, he asks the others: "In the U.S., we call that a Mulligan;
was wondering what you called it here in Ireland?"
He takes a few practice swings, steps up to the first tee, and proceeds
to hook the ball out of bounds. He shakes his head, reaches in his
pocket, and re-tees another ball. He tells his playing partners that he
is taking a Mulligan. He pounds one down the centre of the fairway,
about 280 yards out.
After a moment of silence, one of the locals replies, "Hitting three."

The Team Challenge Cup Tournament A – a separate
competition from the 14 matches of the Inter-Club
Bowling League – was held in mid June. Seven clubs
competed for a one-time match. Both scratch and
handicap scores were calculated. I’m again overjoyed
and super excited to announce that, against all odds,
KCC team became champions of both the scratch and
handicap tournaments! The 4 representatives of KCC
for this tournament were Andrew Yip, Ashok Karnani,
Audrey Tang and CJ Panjabi.
The Roll of Honour has just been released. It includes
standings for the League and Tournament. This season,
KCC has achieved marvellous results:

On 25 June, KCC hosted a friendly match against the
Hong Kong Cricket Club. This is a new contact for us,
and one look forward to the return came in Wong Nei
Chung Gap Road. The format was mens singles and
doubles, with a total of 30 games, which we managed
to complete in three and a half hours.

It was highly entertaining, and the opposition and
crowd loved it. Several kids who turned up and refereed
for us. All these children are keen and talented; the
future top players of KCC. Even our coach was there,
advising our players.
There were some very exciting passages of play.
Although we were very close in many tightly fought
games, we lost the overall match. This was by no means
a one-sided affair, and we can
t a k e e n co u ra g e m e nt f ro m
the fact all our practising and
coaching are bearing fruit.
Although the HKCC could not
provide any lady players, so
we had to arrange an all mens
team, we did have one lady
player who came to support us,
and ended up playing for us in
a doubles game as one of our
men had to leave right after his
singles game. Congratulations
to everyone for providing a
wonderful afternoon of fun.
My thanks to Anne Kwok for putting the event together,
to the sport staff member, Fanny, who set up the Sports
Hall so professionally with the help of the house staff.

On one table, NS was pushed to 7S after the above sequence.
The contract was cold.
However, it was South who missed the proper bid of 5NT instead of
4NT. This bid is known as the Josephine Grand Slam Force, asking
the partner to bid 7 if he holds 2 of the 3 top cards. From South’s
perspective, his long C suit should take care of all the minor suit
losers in North’s hand. So it is only the trump losers he has to worry
about. Actually, he only needed 6 HCPs in North’s hand – i.e. S AQ
for 7S. Total points = 20.
North lead C5. Already Versace had a good idea that North must
have long Clubs headed by A, when he bid 2H without Heart
honours and led a C. He could only hope North had a 6 cards suit,
then he could duck 2 rounds and keep North out of action. So he
promptly played C4 from dummy and C3 from hand, to let South
take the trick with CJ. South returned C2 taken by North with CA.
This illustrates ducking twice to keep control.
North switched to a Heart. West took the trick and played S3 to SK,
ducked by South. West could see that he had 8 tricks, 2S 3H 2D 1C.
Then he played D8 from dummy, probably with the intention of a
deep finesse. South took the DA and returned a H. S5 was lead to
SQ, ducked again by South. Another D from East. South split his JT,
West took South’s Diamond J with his Diamond K, then cashed the
Club Q and the third high Heart, putting South in an impossible
situation. The end position after West took his Diamond K (trick 8)
would be as the chart.
On the Heart A, South could spare a Diamond, but on the Club Q,
South could not discard another Diamond. If he discarded Spade
T, he would be thrown in with a Spade and forced to return a
Diamond from T4 into Q9.
On the other table, play was the same till trick 5. D5 was played
to DK after South played low. From then on declarer was always
1 trick short.
Note that 4 Spades would go down 2 losing 2 trumps, 2 aces and
a D ruff.

Bordeaux 2004 Horizontal Tasting

WINE
This event was organised on 17 June by our mentor Michael Shum, with
an excellent tasting of classified Bordeaux 2004 that included Ch. Grand
Puy Lacoste, Ch. Gruaud Larose, Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte, Ch. Leoville
Poyferre, Ch. Latour A Pomerol and Ch. La Gomerie. It provided an
excellent comparison of left bank and right bank Bordeaux wines, with
the right bank edging in front of the left banking on this evening.

2016 Judo Grading Result
28th May was a long hot day of judo grading started early in the morning. All members
were on their grading test for 1 1/2 hours under the watchful eye of Alex Lee (6th Dan)
the chief examiner who put them through practice and demonstration of standing and
ground techniques.

Players continued their normal Saturday morning 90 minute session.
Later that afternoon Global Sports judoka visited the Hong Kong Judokan. It is Hong
Kong's oldest judo training centre.
Japanese run with an international membership. The master is Sensei Iwami (8th Dan),
is Shirley and Don's judo master.
The dojo (martial art training hall) is not very big so a combined children's class and
parents had really filled the room. The children were put through a rigorous warm up of
running, rolls, breakfalls and various planking styles. HKJK coaches put the kids though
numerous drills and skills techniques.
Last event of the day was a shiai (competition). Players of all levels were chosen to
represent their club. Shiai were all hard and the most unexpected combat came from
Matthew Bottomley, who played 2 shiai and was the victor in both. Really strong and
committed technique was displayed.
Not surprised, Judokan won the shiai (6:4), Shirley and Don were really impressed with
the way our judoka, who since 0845hrs had been tested, trained at KCC, then intensive
combat training at HKJK, a long judo day before this shiai. Global Sports players were
surprised, tired and excited, they respected the HKJK coaches and players in high
respectful spirit throughout the whole visit. Good job boys.
A big thank you to the parents who weekly bring the kids to training in every type of
weather condition, are willing to adjust schedules so students don't miss training or
competitions. And parents share really good photos. Thank you, without you, the parents,
my coaching would be a lot harder, has been enjoyable all the time.

A High Intensity Leg Circuit Workout

If you are accustomed to doing a lot of leg work involving squats
or leg presses, with extensive resting, you can try the following
fast-paced circuit workout on your legs. Your lower body may be
excited by the new stimulus!

Circuit: Repeat 3 times, rest only to transition between moves
Each Move: 30 seconds
Step 1
1. Side Lunge
• stand with your feet and knees together
• take a large step with your left foot to the right side and lunge toward the floor
• keep your right leg relatively straight
• push off through your left foot to return to the starting position

2. Reverse Lunge
• start with your hands on your hips, chest up, and with your feet shoulder-
width apart
• take a step back on a
leg, flex your hips and knees until your knee nearly touches
the ground
• return to starting position and switch leg

4. Seated leg curl
• place the back of lower leg on top of the padded lever and
secure your thighs with the pad
• flex your knees and pull the machine lever to the back of
your thighs as far as possible
3. Leg extension
• sit on the leg extension machine
• adjust the seat so that your legs form a 90-degree angle between
the lower and upper leg
• extend your legs to the maximum as you exhale
• slowly lower the weight back to the original position as
you inhale
5. Body weight squat
• stand with your feet shoulder
width apart and place your
hands on your hip
•flex your knees and hips, sitting
back with your hips
•keep your head and chest up
• if possible, fully lower yourself,
and quickly reverse the motion
to the starting position
The above workout is designed to strengthen the lateral and medial parts of your legs. You may choose it as your main leg work out for 2-3
weeks then switch to other training plans.

GETTING TO KNOW KCC’S STAFF
Susan joined the KCC in November 1996 as a Tennis Court
Attendant. It was in this role that many members first got to
know her cheery smile and helpful personality. After 3 years
at the tennis courts she became KCC’s Proshop Supervisor.
She describes every day being different, a new day, where she
happily interacts with and serves the club’s members. Susan told
us how KCC almost feels like home, and the Club membership,
many of whom she has known for over 20 years, like family.
Fun Fact – “90% of DVDs rented from the Proshop are returned
back on time!”
“I can be myself at KCC”
Susan is happily married and a proud mother of two young
men, who themselves are chasing their own dreams in the
city. As of yet, Susan has not thought about moving back to
the Philippines. However, maybe one day, after retirement, she
would consider moving back to once again experience the calm
and natural setting of her childhood.

Susan Chan – Originally from North Philippines, Susan came to
Hong Kong in 1983 when she was 18 years’ old. Her life in Hong
Kong – an urban and crowded city famed for its’ tower-studded
skyline, is quite different to that of her childhood back in the
Philippines, where she lived on a farm in the midst of nature.
“I’m a farmer’s daughter –
my house in Philippines was surrounded
by rice fields, buffalos and goats …
a little different than Hong Kong!”
Susan was born into a farming family. Her childhood was spent
on the family farm, deep in the country side. There was no
smoke, no factories and no traffic. She remembers harvesting
her family’s crops all year round, and how life revolved around
the seasons – growing vegetables in the summer, and rice when
the rainy season came. Susan is proud of her roots and regards
herself as a trained farmer.
