Choosing Foul Weather Gear
What difference does it make anyway?
If you want to stay dry and comfortable, choosing the right garment
makes all the difference!
There’s not much worse than working all day in
wet, nasty weather and dripping on the inside of
your rain suit. You need to be able to count on
your garments on those wet days and choosing
the right garment makes all the difference.
PVC/Polyester Rain Suit
Reliable quality and comfort in a 3-piece suit
Heavyweight 0.35 mm PVC laminated to polyester interior fabric provides a suit that stands up
to wear and tear. Suit includes jacket, detachable
hood with drawcord and fly front overall. Coat
features two flapped pockets, Raglan sleeves for
mobility, inner storm fly, and nonconductive
hardware. Meets California Prop 65. Ideal for
construction, farm, and food plus general safety
operations.
You’ll find four basic materials each with different weights, waterproofing ability, breathability,
durability and cost. Three of the materials are
coatings applied over or under the basic fabric
layer (usually nylon) and the last group generally
includes a breathable fabric.
Sizes: L to 3XL. Men’s chest size: M (40-42”),
L (44-46”), XL (48-50”), 2XL (52-54”),
3XL (56-58”).

PVC, or polyvinyl-chloride, is a coating
that is durable, resists abrasion well, and sheds
certain chemicals like diesel fuel. It’s lightweight
and fairly inexpensive. The way PVC seams weld
together makes them the most waterproof of
the three types. PVC tends to collect condensation and perspiration between your skin and the
inside of the garment, and in cold weather may
become brittle. The quality of PVC does vary.
The longest lasting suits are made more abrasion
resistant with multiple layers of PVC coatings.

Polyurethane is a rubber polymer coating, that is lighter and
more flexible than PVC, but also less durable, and is generally applied
inside the nylon shell. Polyurethane is more breathable than PVC, but
making it more breathable on the inside also means reducing its ability to
repel water from the outside. Better quality polyurethane gear is carefully
bonded in many thin layers to prevent water absorption than can result
in eventual delamination.
Neoprene is the most flexible and durable of the coatings. It is
also the thickest, heaviest, and (natually) the most expensive. It is ideal
for cold and wet circumstances, and if you can handle the additional
weight, it will last the longest.
Breathable fabrics allow perspiration and condensation inside the
rain suit to pass outward. Microporous breathables have tiny holes that
let water vapor escape without letting water in. Body heat and the higher
pressure of humidity drive out the water vapor. Some breathable gear is
designed to wick water away from the skin.
Features to Consider:
Seams should be sealed to prevent water penetration. Rain gear should
be properly sized for comfortable all-day wear and maneuverability.
Front closures with storm flaps help to funnel water away from zippers.
Cargo and handwarmer pockets, underarm grommets for ventilation, and
roll up or attachable hoods are other conveniences you may or may not
want, depending on the budget and application. Reflective tape for extra
visibility in addition to color of the suit may also be important.
Care and Cleaning
We suggest rinsing off and hang-drying any suit; never store any suit wet.
Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions and note that most water
repellent fabrics do not withstand heat of washers, dryers, or exposure to
sun.
PVC-on-Nylon Raincoat
Budget minded all-purpose raincoat
Inexpensive flame-resistant all-purpose coat can be
used in chemical, construction, farm, mining and
rail operations. Fabric is 0.30 mm double-coated
PVC on nylon which prevents snags from becoming tears. Raglan sleeve contruction and double
heat-welded seams. Raincoat has detachable hood
and is 48” in length. Non-conductive hardware.
Meets California Prop 65.

Chaps protect by offering cut resistance that
slows and stops the saw chain. The material
is pulled into the drive sprocket and jams it
to a stop. Chaps need to be sized and fitted
correctly to maximize protection. Chaps
need to be worn snugly and positioned correctly on the legs.
Care and Cleaning
Protect chaps from saw, gas, and oil when
traveling, do not wrap chaps around bar
while carrying your saw. Keeping your saw
clean will help reduce oil buildup on chaps.
Remove heavy oil and dirt with non-chlorine bleach solvent, brush with a bristle
brush. Rinse in warm water. Hang to dry.
Avoid bleach or machine washing.
Chap Inspection
Remove chaps from service any time a
strand has been cut. Once cut, the Kevlar®
will not have the full or long strands
capable of stopping the chain. You’ll notice
that chaps are sewn only on the edges of the
chaps, so that allows the saw chain to pull
out the maximum amount of Kevlar to clog
the chain and sprocket.
