Reflecting on the Dog Days
engaged in a cover up and that global climate change
was not caused by humans. This summer, a broad range
of people have analyzed all of those emails and come to
the conclusion that, although they may be jerks sending
insulting emails, they are also good scientists who are
not involved in a cover-up.
In order for us to effectively address global climate
change, we need to have a coordinated effort. In part,
that is why the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life (COEJL) has issued its Climate Covenant. I
encourage you all to go to www.coejl.org and sign it.

t is hot. As I write this in mid-July, we have had quite a heat
wave in the US, and I expect as you read this in early August
that it will still be hot. Part of why I expect that to be true is we
have entered the dog days of summer, which extend until the
beginning of September. This expression has always made me
think of dogs outside in the heat, lying down, panting, overcome with exhaustion. It's just too hot to do anything.
The phrase 'dog days' actually comes to us from ancient
Rome, where they were called diēs caniculārēs and did not refer
to domesticated dogs but rather to Sirius, the dog star (called
the dog star because it is the brightest star in the constellation
Canis Major - the big dog). Sirius is the brightest star in the
heavens after the sun, as perceived by the naked eye, and it was
thought by the ancient Romans to be a second heat source. In
ancient times, during the dog days, Sirius was in conjunction
with the sun and rose at the same time (because of the precession of the equinoxes this is no longer the case). The Romans,
believing the extreme heat and its languid effect on humans
were the result of the influence of Sirius, sacrificed a dog in a
vain attempt to appease the star and bring relief.
For us, obviously, we do not attribute the heat to a far away
star (even if it is the fifth closest one to Earth). We understand
that the angle of the Earth's axis combined with the elliptical
orbit around the Sun together contribute to the shift in temperature from season to season. We also understand, even
against the attempts of some to dispute this, that the increasing heat our planet is experiencing is directly related to human
causes such as the burning of fossil fuels.
Last winter, there were many people who complained about
the cold and how 'global warming' must be a myth since it
was so cold at that time. I will certainly grant that this summer's heat wave no more proves global climate change than
did last winter's cold snap disprove it. Instead, the accumulation of scientific data proves it. Last winter there was a scandal among climate scientists when a series of private emails
mocking climate change doubters were made public. Those
doubters claimed that these emails proved the scientists were

adverse impacts of the environmental crises of our time; and IMPROVE their
conditions and opportunities;
= EMPOWER all people to take part in the new, green economy and help build a
sustainable society;
= ASSURE that our world's environment will be made better for our children and
grandchildren and the world's future generations.
Through all of our efforts, we can repair our world. Although the dog days of summer will still
be hot, through our efforts we can overcome their alleged ability to cause hysterics and frenzies
and spread the cooling salve of reducing our carbon footprint to our planet. As Rabbi Shimon Bar
Yochai said, 'three things are of equal importance: earth, humans, and rain.' Rabbi Levi ben Hiyyata
said: '…without earth, there is no rain, and without rain, the earth cannot endure, and without
either, humans cannot exist.' Let us protect our world if for no other reason than we ourselves are
in need of it. =

High Holiday Programming

Childcare, as well as age-appropriate programming is available during most High Holy Day services. Registration must be received by
August 27, 2010 to ensure we have proper supervision.
Additionally, a free Tot Family Program is available during Tot services. Run by our TELC staff, this program does not require
advanced registration and is available during both Tot services.

The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School
is the largest pluralistic adult Jewish Education network in the world, with 63 sites in five
countries. And Atlanta’s Mini-School is one
of the largest with over 1,000 graduates!
Over the course of the two-year program,
the Melton curriculum teaches our common roots and traditions, and enables Jewish
adults from all backgrounds to learn about
our heritage and culture in a challenging and
inspiring course of study. It provides a strong
foundation in Jewish learning, and the skills
to incorporate that learning into your daily
life.

Year One Courses

= The Rhythms of Jewish Living
Why do Jews do what they do? This course introduces the ideas,
beliefs, and practices that shape Jewish living. It covers the cycles
of Jewish life through study of Jewish rituals, holidays and life cycle
events.
= The Purposes of Jewish Living
Why do Jews believe what they believe? This course presents essential
Jewish theological concepts as they unfold in the Torah, Talmud and
other Jewish sacred texts. It looks at the “big questions” in Judaism,
such as God, sin, what happens after we die, and why people suffer.
= Taught by Rabbi Lapidus and Dr. Shelley Buxbaum
How is Melton Structured?
Year Two Courses
= No prerequisites, grades, exams, outside reading, or homework.
= No Hebrew required.
= Each lesson can be studied independently of the others.
= Melton is a 30-week program, following a school-year calendar.
Students come once a week for two 1-hour classes separated by a
15-minute break.
= Class size is limited to enable discussion. The break time also allows
more informal conversations among students and faculty.
= Although students are only asked to commit to one year at a time, most
enroll for both years.
= Many of our students enjoy the atmosphere, knowledge and camaraderie
so much that they continue for many years with our elective courses.

= The Ethics of Jewish Living
What does Judaism say about issues such as justice, life and death,
interpersonal relationships, sexuality, community, business and

focuses on the major “dramas” of our past that raise important
questions for Jews today.

any of us mourn the passing of Erwin
Zaban and if you were fortunate to attend
the funeral services you were able to witness a
small portion of how intimate he was in his writings and expressions toward his wife and family.
His exit is felt by those of us who were intimately
touched by his kindness.
I was fortunate to interact with Mr. Zaban on
several occasions, the first being in November 2008
when he was scheduled to be a food provider one
evening at the Zaban Couples Center. He had a
wonderful meal of brisket catered for the residents.
I was most impressed by the fact that despite his
failing health, he traveled to Sandy Springs to pick
up the meal and made the delivery himself. I was
even more impressed by his tenacity toward honoring his commitment and his consistent graciousness
toward me. This past holiday season, aside from his
annual contribution he also mailed a check along
with a letter to ensure that all of the residents had
everything they needed. This past April, he became
emotional after an impromptu standing ovation
from the residents when he attended the graduation
of our Strengthening Relationships class. There are
many other instances where he revealed his caring
heart as I am sure many have very similar stories
about this gentle effective man who was such a
major force for good. We all so dearly miss him.
His life encourages me to carry on this work with
excellence and provide care to our residents with
dignity. I am honored to partner with the Board of
Directors to lead the work of the Zaban Couples
Center and may we all be even more encouraged to
do our life work with excellence and with vigor. He
has made such a difference in my life.
Along with the residents and Board of Directors, we extend our sincerest condolences to the
family of Mr. Erwin Zaban “A Man Who Made a
Difference.” =
