THE KESHER NEWSLETTER

A JEWISH JOURNEY
We are approaching the Hebrew month of
Nisan, the first month on the Jewish calendar.
Our journey begins with the coming of spring
when we celebrate Passover, possibly the
most observed holiday of the Jewish year.
We invite family and friends for our Seders.
We clean our homes, our clothes and our
cars; after all, it is spring.
The journey continues with cooking an elaborate feast. The table is set and the Seder plate we bought at the Sisterhood gift shop is prepared with the symbols of the holiday. Our
Kiddush cups are polished and placed on the table, and we buy
plenty of wine, for on Passover we drink four cups of wine. We
search and look for the right Haggadah which we will use to narrate our Seder.
One person, traditionally the youngest present, asks the question:
“Why is this night different from all other nights?” The answer is
given, and more questions are asked. Why is this night different? It
is different because our journey as the Jewish people begins with
our exodus from slavery, from the house of bondage.
We leave Egypt, we flee bondage and exile and we journey towards The Promised Land. The Hebrew word for Egypt is Mitzrayim. The rabbis and sages of our people often changed the vowels in a word and enriched the text with alternative meanings. The
Spring 2015
word maytzarim means narrow places. When we crossed the Sea of
Reeds (the Red Sea) and escaped the house of bondage, we went
through the narrow places to become a free people, the Jewish people.
Each of us passes through narrow places in our lives. Each of us
struggles to find our own promised land. Passover annually gives
us the opportunity to seek again, and to reconnect with our traditions and our Jewish family in all its configuration. We recall that
we are not only a faith community, but we are bound together as
Jews with an eternal covenant.
Part of that covenantal obligation is the responsibility to have our
voices heard in Jewish communities around the world. We have a
special opportunity to have our voice heard this year through the
World Zionist Congress elections which are occurring through
April. Five years ago, the Reform Jewish community showed its
unity and the result was that many millions of dollars were sent to
Reform institutions in Israel through the World Zionist Organization. Please visit the ARZA site on your computer and vote for the
ARZA platform. One of the representatives in the congress will be
our own Rabbi Emeritus Stanley M. Davids.
May your Passover journey be one filled with loving family, good
friends, renewal and spiritual fulfillment.
Karen joins me in wishing each of you a sweet Passover.
Chag Sameach,
Rabbi Scott Colbert

From Our Co-Presidents
Over the last 9 months we have had the honor and privi-
served as our Cantor, Religious Educator and now our
Rabbi. He has been the glue that has held Temple Emanu-El
together over the last 28 years. We will be honoring him in
many ways. You will be receiving an invitation to the April
25th event and news on other programs to honor Scott.
Last, but definitely not least, is the excitement of hiring of
Rabbi Spike Anderson as our Senior Rabbi. After a very
thorough and comprehensive search the Rabbinical Search
Committee has recommended the hiring of Rabbi Anderson.
We should all extend a big “Thank You” to this committee
for the hours of hard work and the commitment to find “the
RIGHT Rabbi”.
lege to serve you as Co-Presidents, and watch the incredible
growth of the Temple Emanu-El Congregation. As we walk
through the building or attend temple activities we see an
increase in enthusiasm and participation. We see a renewed
excitement and the building of new relationships. The congregation continues to attend events and volunteer in numbers that we have not seen in years.
Attendance at events is up, way up. Whether it was at the
Congregational Town Halls on what we want in a new rabbi
with close to 250 attendees; or over 350 responses to our
survey, which resulted in the change in Shabbat service
times to 7:30 and the return of the Oneg; or the Purim Spiel
with close to 100; or Rabbi Colbert’s “brown bag lunch”
with over 60 attending; or Shabbat services that continue to
attract more and more people. There is a new sense of involvement and commitment. If you have not been attending
… YOU are missing out on making new friends, renewing
old friendships, growing spiritually, learning and being part
of our family.
The Congregation will vote on the approval of his contract at
the Annual Meeting on April 26, 2015. The committee has
done its work in accordance to our by-laws, and the hiring
has been approved by the Executive Committee, the Board
of Trustees and the Financial Council. Join us on April 26 th
to approve the contract.
We can tell you that, after spending time with Rabbi Anderson, we have to agree with the committee that he is a dynamic Rabbi who can take Temple Emanu-El to new levels.
You have received a separate letter on Rabbi Anderson so
we will not go into detail on his background. We can tell you
that this is a man who is committed to being a great Rabbi
and who is committed to making Temple Emanu-El, the
premier Congregation in the greater Atlanta area.
We look forward to seeing you at all of our events and Shabbat services. Please stop by and say hello to us.
There is no doubt in our minds that this enthusiasm will continue to grow as more and more of our congregants sees the
changes in attitude that have developed at Temple EmanuEl. As we continue to add programming and events that we
hope you will find exciting and rewarding, we hope you
elect to attend and participate.
One of the BIG events that we are planning is on April 25,
2015. It is an event that will begin the celebration of the
work and commitment of Rabbi Scott Colbert. Rabbi Colbert
has been with our congregation for over 28 years. He has

From the desk of Mark Flaxer, Executive Director
predecessor Beverly Brown who kept our office staff working
together for 17 years. I have a great base upon which to build
the congregational experience for everyone due to Beverly’s
hard work.
So…it all started when I raised my hand at an Executive
Committee meeting. “What started?” - you may ask - my
transition from lay leader to Executive Director. Temple
Emanu-El has been a large part of my family’s life for almost
24 years, and now I embark on a new chapter of service to
our congregation. What an amazing 90 days it’s been!
The temple staff is wonderful. These professionals work tirelessly to get the programs created; marketed to the congregation. They note and keep track of all the life-cycle events that
occur in our congregation with great success week in and
week out. It’s not just about B’nai Mitzvahs and the High
Holy Days. You asked for more programming, so we accommodated, and you’re showing up in record numbers to our
events. All of us work harder knowing that you’re feeling a
stronger connection to our house of worship.
Like many of my fellow congregants, I spent many of my
early years attending services a couple of times a quarter,
came to many Religious School events as a parent of two
young children, and attended High Holy Day services each
fall. Staci and I also came to Adult Education with Rabbis
Davids and Schwartz, learning about everything from “Death
and Dying” to the “Five Books of the Torah”. It was at those
Adult Ed events that we began shaping our adult Jewish identity as a couple and a family.
Our co-presidents called this a “Year of Engagement”. I have
certainly taken that to heart. I invite you to come to an event
that you wouldn’t normally attend. Try something new and
get to meet new people! Our synagogue is filled with wonderful people who have similar interests to yours. Let us know if
there’s something you’ve participated in at another temple
that we should try at Emanu-El.
I was a member of the Board of Trustees and served as Recording Secretary. I was able to become more active in the
direction and management of Temple Emanu-El. I saw this
as an honor, to address the needs of my community as a
leader. It was also a great way to “give back” to my synagogue.
I invite you to come into the office and say hello when you
have a chance. I would love getting to know you personally.
In my new role of Executive Director, I have quickly come to
realize that it takes a lot of effort from many individuals to
make this place work each week. My hat goes off to my

From Cantor Adesnik—
Spring is one of the most beau-
cally, Ginsberg places the language of Shir Hashirim as late
as third century B.C.E. This poetry is lush, heady and descriptive, filled with imagery and metaphors of nature and
animals. The female lover in the poetry is described as a “lily
among thorns,” while the male “beloved is like a gazelle, or
like a young stag.” The poet describes springtime as a time
when the “blossoms have appeared…the song of the turtledove is heard…the vines in blossom have given off fragrance.” These words transcend the reader and listener into a
rich world filled with promise, newness, hope, and love.
tiful, magical and fleeting times
of the year. It is a time when renewal and the miracle of rebirth
happens all around us. We have a
special holiday during this brief
season, Pesach; celebrating our
redemption and freedom from
slavery, and our becoming the
people of Israel. One of the texts that we chant over Pesach is
Shir Hashirim, the Song of Songs.
The cantillation melody attributed to this text highlights the
many facets of Shir Hashirim poetry. The tonal harmony is a
mixture of three modes that create an open and exotic flair.
There are many leaps from one note to the next, known as
intervals that begin small, grow larger, and return to smaller
leaps, describing the lush rolling of hills, incense or fragrance. The smaller and larger intervals may also represent a
gazelle bounding across a great field; a bird soaring through
an expansive sky.
Rabbis have debated for millennia about the nature of this
text. Midrash Sefer Haagadah, our book of legends based on
Midrash and Talmud, lists several debates about this text,
describing Shir Hashirim as a text that “makes the hands unclean” because of the erotic nature of the poetry. In these debates, Rabbi Akiva disagrees with the above statement, and
comments that “while all the songs in scripture are holy, the
Song of Songs is the holiest of holy.” A further story illumines “that from all of Solomon’s wisdom (to whom this text
is attributed to) there was sifted out for Israel only the Song
of Songs, the most beautiful of songs, the most sublime of
songs. See how the Holy One praises Israel in it: ‘behold,
thou art fair My love, My love, behold, thou art fair.”
Through these Rabbinic debates, stories, interpretation and
commentary, Song of Songs became sacred and holy poetry;
a representation of God’s love for God’s people Israel.
The melodies and rhythms are highly expressive. There are
lots of notes that run up and down very quickly, combined
with many rhythmic changes that conjure images of bees
buzzing, honey dripping off of the comb, or flowers blossoming. The short and quick notes are followed by longer notes,
and phrases that become heavy at the end, like a deep gaze of
a lover, or the curious and steady gaze of a deer.
The cantillation combined with the text brings the renewal,
rebirth and redemption of Pesach to life, mirroring the new
life of springtime that surrounds this holiday. As you prepare
for Pesach this spring, think about the rebirth and renewal of
the world around you. What would you like to renew in your
life this year?
Today, scholars view this rich text as both sacred poetry describing God’s love for God’s people Israel, and as poetry of
emotional and physical love between two people. Many texts
from Shir Hashirim have been set to music arranged for wedding ceremonies and celebrations. H.L Ginsberg writes that
within Shir Hashirim, “there is also an appreciation of the
sights, sounds and smells of the Eretz Israel spring.” Histori-

"Caring, Doing and Connection"
Welcome to Temple Emanu-El's mission to expand the
ways we care for, comfort and support our congregants
in our community during times of need and times of
joy. We want to promote a culture in which a lot of us
give a little time to reach out to one another and Temple Emanu-El becomes a comfortable place to turn
when we can use a helping hand or share in joy.....Your
participation in our Caring Community will ensure a
caring response to our congregants. Thank you for
your time and compassion.
We are in need of substitute callers and food deliverers.
We also need volunteers for monthly Shabbat services
at Atria Senior center in Alpharetta.

For his Mitzvah Project, Max collected used
household items to donate to the American
Kidney Services in honor of his grandmother
and uncle and, also, in memory of his grandmother’s father who died from kidney disease.
Max enjoys being on the Cross Country and
Track team at Davis and will be in the school

January 17, 2015: Sydney Levy is the daughter of Sam and Andrea
Levy and sister to Jordan,
10, and Molly, 5. Sydney
is a native Atlantan. She
began her religious education at Schiff Preschool
at 18 months old. After
graduating from Schiff she
attended Diamond Family Religious School.
She is a student at Peachtree Charter Middle
School where her favorite subject is Chorus.
For her Mitzvah Project, Sydney has dedicated
much time to Camp Jenny, a NFTY-SAR Mitzvah Corp Program which was named and dedicated in memory of her dad’s cousin, Jenny
Rosenthal. She collected and decorated, with a
lot of help from her friends and family, 150 pillow cases for each 2014 camper. Her family
also donated 150 pillows. Sydney has collected
travel sized toiletries to donate to the 2015
campers. She used some of those toiletries to
decorate the tables during her Kiddush luncheon. Sydney enjoys singing, acting and dancing. She has currently been rehearsing the role
of Belle in the 2015 PCMS play, “Beauty and
the Beast”. She was also chosen to be a part of
the 2015 Georgia All-State Chorus Program. If
she’s not singing, dancing or acting, she’s
counting down the days until Camp Judaea
begins, her home away from home.
January 24, 2015: Caden Sime is the son of
Jeff and Keely Sime and
brother to Maddon, 10.
Caden is a native Atlantan.
He started attending Schiff
Preschool in the summer of
2004 when he was two and
remained at Schiff through
Pre-K. Caden attended
Austin Elementary and is now a student at
Peachtree Charter Middle School. He has been
a part of Diamond Family Religious School
since Kindergarten. Caden enjoys playing
baseball, basketball, doing triathlons and attending Camp Barney Medintz.

Project
was followed with the celebration of Purim with all the
appropriate fanfare. There were art projects, a puppet
show, a Frozen Purim Spiel, and of course the Purim

volunteers was amazing.
I have always said that the students in Temple EmanuAs March comes to a close, we refocus and enjoy our
Pesach practice seder. This gives all the students the
opportunity to prepare for the seders in their homes. I
hope all of our students are practicing the 4 questions
in Hebrew to be ready for the big night.
El’s religious school are incredible individuals. Once
again they have shown me just how intelligent and caring they are. This is shaping up to be a fabulous year
and I thank all of the parents and students for making it
that way.
In the midst of all this celebrating it is important to
remember to engage in tzedakah. Our religious school
has embarked on a project to support the Community
Assistance Center in our community. Students are
bringing in non perishable food items every week to
help those who are having difficulty putting food on
their tables. Anyone in the congregation who wishes to
join us in our tzedakah project can place non perishable
items in the designated boxes in any of the classrooms.
The outpouring of support in the tzedakah project has

An Award Winning
Sisterhood for All Ages
Sisterhood is feeling a part of a temple
community and creating opportunities to
be involved in social activities, philanthropy, advocacy, and creativity. We are
part of a global sisterhood in partnership
with WRJ, sharing the values and traditions of Reform Judaism.
I am so grateful to the women who have
joined and supported the Temple EmanuEl sisterhood. I encourage our potential
members to come and join us at our next
event to feel the warmth and kindness of
our members.
In December, Wendy Frank coordinated
the decorating of a Hanukah display at
the Governor’s Mansion with the help of
a committee of dedicated women. This is
the fifth year in a row our sisterhood has
been included in this event. This year’s
theme was volunteerism, chosen by our
governor’s wife, Sandra Deal. Wendy
was interviewed on WSB about our Hanukah display, which aired on Dec 19th.
In her appearance she discussed how
Temple Emanu-El uses food donations to
help the community while showcasing
our cherished Garden Isaiah.
The past coordinated events have been
new, engaging and exciting.
On a beautiful Sunday evening In October, we continued with our tradition of a
Pet Blessing/Havdalah program as Rabbi
Colbert and Cantor Adesnik lead the
pack in songs, prayers, and woofs.
Also in December, we had a wonderful
Chanukah Brunch/Gift Exchange/ Social
Action Project. Thank you to Hope

this event and Hope for contacting an

cross and that we will have opportunities to work together in
the future.
Thank you again,
Rusty Paul, Mayor
