BOOK REVIEW
Kiandra – Gold Fields to
Ski Fields by Nornan W. Clarke
This literary scoop came via an email sent by the book’s author to
NHSC member Paul Deshaies—thanks Paul.
C
larke’s newly released book covers the history of snow
skiing from 1861 to 2006 and reveals several fascinating facts. During the 1950’s and to 1979, the Kiandra Ski
Club of Australia was claimed to be the first ski club in the
world, and oldest as it is still in existence. According to Clarke, this claim is now a proven
fact. In 2006, The Holmenkollen Ski Museum of Norway confirmed that the first two ski
clubs in the world were formed by Norwegians in 1861, both in Norway and Australia.”
Unfortunately the Norwegian club mentioned could not ski until the second
“Winterthing Day” in January 1862. (Funny, we only have to wait until it snows).
Three Norwegian ship’s carpenters from the NSW whaling fleets had jumped ship to
chase gold on the Kiandra gold fields. Together with other snow loving gold miners from
various mountainous regions of the world, they formed the Kiandra Snow Shoe Club, now
known as the Kiandra Ski Club. The membership list at the turn of the century included the
Vice President, Mr. C.A. Falstadt, Consul General to Norway and Sweden!
Clarke’s self-described “hard-covered coffee table” book also demonstrates how an
Australian ski club operates, highlighting the Kiandra club’s long history, supported by a
great number of photos.
ISBN 0-646-46337-3, $24.95 plus postage. Order: Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club, P.O. Box 470,
St. Ives, NSW. 2075; email the author: [email protected]

Special Guest for January: Pro-Lens
Pro-Lens of Campton has been replacing snow goggle lenses for almost 20 years.
We began with “cut your own” lenses in the early single lenses years. We began stocking
lenses in our shop and soon realized there were far too many for a shop to deal with.
We hope members bring their goggles to the meeting to find out what options they may
have and learn more about new lens construction, light conditions and even prescription
goggle options.
See you there ~ Chris from Pro-Lens

Box 470,
