Opening hours: Tuesday–Saturday 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.–4 p.m.
We recommend starting your acquaintance with Vilnius at Cathedral Square
— at the heart of the capital and the whole country. Park your car next to the
Museum of Applied Art (Arsenalo g.) or in a paid parking lot near Cathedral
Square (Vrublevskio g.) and take a look around.
The Cathedral and the Cathedral belfry are the highlights of the square. King
Mindaugas built the original Cathedral in 1251 after his conversion to Christianity in the place of a pagan temple. The Cathedral was later rebuilt several
times. The current classical Cathedral is the design of the famous Lithuanian
architect Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius (end of 18th century) but its interior
still reflects earlier architectural periods.
6
The Cathedral belfry (57 metres high) is a tower of the former defensive
wall rebuilt in 1530. The reddish-brown paving stones in Cathedral Square
mark the contour of the former city wall. The belfry was a starting point of
the Baltic Chain, a 595-kilometre-long human chain that ran between Vilnius,
Riga, and Tallinn and symbolized the solidarity of the Baltic States in their
struggle for independence. People say that a paving stone named “Stebuklas”
(“Miracle”) located between the Cathedral and the belfry makes your secret
wishes come true. All you have to do is turn full-circle clockwise three times.
Give it a try!
The Cathedral leans against the rebuilt Royal Palace of Lithuania (16th century), which is a representative building of the former Lower Castle. Currently,
the New Arsenal and the Old Arsenal that form a part of the castle house the
National Museum of Lithuania and the Museum of Applied Art, which offer a
huge number of interesting and unique exhibits.
Cast a look upwards and your eyes will fall on the Gediminas Castle Tower. On
the other side of the Vilnia River, a white monument, Three Crosses, stands
high up the hill. The twist in the Vilnia River embraces Sereikiškių Park (formerly, a garden of the castle, then a garden of a former Bernardine monastery, and later a botanical garden of Vilnius University).
Cathedral Square is a popular place for various festive events and gatherings,
and the belfry is a favourite meeting place in the city centre.
GEDIMINAS CASTLE
Gediminas Castle Tower

www.lnm.lt
Opening hours: May–September, Monday–Sunday 10 a.m.–7 p.m.; October–April, Tuesday–Sunday
10 a.m.–5 p.m.
The castle tower named after Grand Duke Gediminas, the founding father of
the city, is a symbol of the capital. It is said that the Vilnia River flowing at the
foot of the castle hill gave the name to the city of Vilnius.
7
The museum in Gediminas Castle Tower hosts an exhibition that includes reconstructed models of the 14th–16th century Vilnius castles and some armament and iconographic material of the old Vilnius. The Lithuanian tricolour
flag, which flutters on the top of the Castle Tower as a symbol of Lithuania’s
independence (declared on February 16, 1918), was first raised on January 1,
1919. Every year at noon on January 1st, which is Lithuanian Flag Day, one
tricolour is solemnly substituted with a new one.
It is supposed that Vilnius was founded in 1323 when Grand Duke Gediminas started sending invitations to craftsmen and merchants from the Western
countries to come and settle in Vilnius. At that time, the core of the city
consisted of three defensive castles — the Lower, the Upper, and the Crooked
— and several small villages.
The panorama viewed from the roof of the Castle Tower attracts a lot of visitors. The baroque Old Town (a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Register since
1994) decorated by dozens of church towers spreads south while the downtown area lays west. To the right of it, beyond the Neris River, you will see the
skyscrapers of the new business centre. Kalnų Park, the Hill of Three Crosses,
and a chain of picturesque hills stretch out north and east.

Behind the Museum of Applied Art (Arsenalo g.), cross the bridge over the
Vilnia River and park your car in a paid parking lot at the edge of Kalnų Park.
Then climb the hill on foot.
The Hill of Three Crosses is another spectacular place offering one of the most
beautiful panoramas in Vilnius. Legend has it that seven Franciscan monks
who were sent to spread Christianity in Lithuania were crucified on this hill
by people seeking to preserve paganism after the official conversion of Lithuania to Christianity in 1387. The Three Crosses designed by Antanas Vivulskis
were erected in 1916. Unfortunately, the Soviets destroyed them in 1950. At
the initiative of the Reform Movement of Lithuania, the monument was reconstructed in 1989.

The Church of St Michael
A. Volano g. 13 / Šv. Mykolo g. 8
If you follow Maironio Street, the Church of St Michael will be on your right
and the spectacular Ensemble of the Church of St Anne and the Church of St
Francis and St Bernardino (abbr. Bernardine Church) will be on your left. In
a square nearby, you will find a monument to the great Polish romantic poet
Adomas Mickevičius.
The Church of St Anne is distinguished by the rhythmic composition of its vertical and curved lines that make it a real late gothic masterpiece. This light
and graceful church was built at the end of the 15th century using thirty-three
kinds of bricks. A neo-gothic bell tower, which stands next to the church, was
built much later—in 1873.
Even though the Bernardine Ensemble (a church and monastery) dates back
to the same time as the Church of St Anne, it is totally different. The large,
durable, and solid church might have been used not only as a house of God but
also as a fortress. The solemn but elaborate interior of the church includes a
number of gothic frescos, 11 baroque altars, and many other pieces of art.
Follow Maironio Street and turn left behind the Orthodox Church of the Most
Pure Mother of God. Then cross the bridge over the Vilnia River and you will
find yourself in Užupis, a district popular among people of artistic nature (the
sign marked “Užupis”).

Užupio g
Užupis is one of the most beautiful old districts of Vilnius. Surrounded by the
Vilnia River, a hilly village started growing in the 16th century. In olden days,
this suburb located behind the city wall was popular among craftsmen and
small merchants. The small Church of St Bartholomew, built in the 18th century and later destroyed by fire and rebuilt, still recalls those days. The eastern bank of the Vilnia River embraces the Bernardine Cemetery, the oldest
cemetery in Vilnius, dating back to 1810. Distinctive and artistic gravestones
place it among the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe.
Užupis, which has preserved its many-centuries-old system of streets and
houses, has notably revived sinced Lithuania gained its independence. This
previously shabby district has become a popular place among artists, who
have declared it “the republic of Užupis”. The “republic” even has honorary
citizens: Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus; his Holiness the Dalai Lama
of Tibet; the godfather of American avant-garde filmmaking, emigrant artist
Jonas Mekas; and some other eminent people.
Užupis is famous for its art galleries, studios, workshops, and cosy cafes, as
well as for its unconventional concerts, exhibitions, festivals, and late-night
poetry readings. A sculpture of the Užupis Patron Angel was unveiled in the
main square of the “republic” a couple of years ago. On the bank of the Vilnia
River, you can find the Užupis Mermaid. The story is told that she can enchant
you and you will deeply fall in love with this bohemian district, often compared to Montmartre in Paris.
Užupis boasts plenty of wonderful places where you can admire panoramas
of the Vilnius Old Town. Here you can catch sight of Bekešas Hill overlooking
the Hill of Gediminas’ Grave. Turn left from Užupio Street to Krivių Street
and park your car on the street or in a parking lot next to Užupis Gymnasium
(Krivių g. 10). Climb up the hills and enjoy the views.
10
BEKEŠAS HILL
Bekešas Hill is named
after Kaspar Bekes, a
Hungarian
noblemen
and a commander of the
then Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth army,
who was buried here in
the 16th century.
Bekes had practiced an Aryan religion and therefore the Catholic Church did
not give permission to have his remains buried in their churchyard.
On this hill, you may admire a breathtaking panorama of the Sereikiškių Park
in the curve of the Vinia River, the Gediminas’ Castle Tower, Cathedral Square,
the Old Town, and downtown. Then, follow a path leading to the Hill of Gediminas’ Grave.
It is said that warriors and grateful townspeople built this hill in commemoration of Gediminas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania and founder of the capital,
after his death. It is believed that Gediminas was killed in Veliuona during a
battle in which the crusaders first used firearms. His remains were burnt and
buried under this barrow.
On your way down Užupio Street, stop beside “Tores” Restaurant and enjoy
another spectacular panorama. You may park your car in the parking lot in
front of the restaurant.

The swift Vilnia River flows at the bottom of a high slope where its curve embraces the popular Sereikiškių Park, one of the oldest green spaces in Vilnius.
Gediminas’ Hill and the Castle Tower are now in front of you while a circle
of hills (the Hill of Three Crosses, the Hill of Gediminas’ Grave, Bekešas Hill,
Stalas (Engl. table) Hill) surrounding the Šventaragio Valley is on your right.
The gorgeous Ensemble of the Church of St Anne and the Church of St Francis
and St Bernardino rests on your left and the soaring towers of the Church of St
Johns (Vilnius University) as well as the Cathedral belfry may be seen further,
beyond the Old Town. The panorama reveals its full beauty when the sun is
setting or in a heavy snowfall in winter.
Drive down the main street, then cross the bridge and the border of the
Užupis “republic”. Then turn left and Maironio Street will lead you to the
Tymo Quarter, a district earlier popular for craftsmen’s workshops (the “Tymo
kvartalas”(“Tymo Quarter”) sign). Park your car in the spacious free parking
lot in Maironio Street.

TYMO QUARTER
In the Middle Ages, this craftsmen’s village was located outside of Vilnius, behind the eastern city wall. A lot of leather processing workshops were opened
here in the 14th–19th century and therefore the village got the name “Tymo”
which in Lithuanian means “well processed leather”.
Nowadays, the Tymo Quarter is highly influenced by the artistic spirit of neighbouring Užupis. It houses a “handicraft village”, a number of craftsmen’s
workshops, and artists’ studios. Currently, the quarter features nearly fifty
different shops that sell jewellery, textiles, and ceramics, as well as a huge
variety of articles from leather, amber, and iron. You will definitely find some
accessory or souvenir you like. Moreover, every Sunday people gather here to
attend a local book fair where books are traded.
12
Leave your car parked in the Tymo Quarter and visit the lower part of Užupis,
the bastion located on the corner of Subačiaus Street and Bokšto Street, and
the nearby scenic viewpoint. Among the colourful houses, you will find the
stairs leading to Bokšto Street through Kūdrų Street. Turn left and walk along
the wall of red bricks until you reach the tower.
THE BASTION OF VILNIUS
DEFENCE WALL
Bokšto g. 20/18
Tel: +370 5 261 21 49
www.lnm.lt
Opening hours: May–September, Tuesday–Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.–3 p.m.;
October–April, Tuesday–Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
The bastion was built as an artillery fortification in the 17th century. It constituted a part of the city defence wall that had been erected a century earlier
to protect the Old Town.
The bastion consists of a tower rising from the city wall, a huge underground
gun port (length 110 m, width 4 m, height 5 m), and a 48-metre-long tunnel
connecting them (length 48 m, width 2.8 m, height 3.5 m). Currently, the underground gun foundry houses an exhibition of cannons and medieval armour
from the oldest times to the late 18th century.
A green beside the bastion is a popular place for romantic dates. On your
way there, you will be able to admire another gorgeous panorama of the Old
Town.
13
The uppermost part of Subačiaus Street provides a superb view of the Old Town. It must
be the most breathtaking panorama of the
capital since here you can see the majority
of churches and other places of worship in
Vilnius.
M a i r o n i o g. >
– Subačiaus g. / Maironio g. The first thing that will strike your eye in this
Old Town panorama is the graceful Missionary
Church of the Assumption and the baroque
buildings surrounding it. On their right, you
will surely notice the crown of the Church of St Casimir. This church, dedicated to the Patron Saint of Lithuania, is the first baroque church in Vilnius
(17th century). Further to the right, you will spot the Church of the Holy
Mother of God which is the only one-tower late baroque church in Lithuania.
Yet further in the distance are the gold-plated domes of the Russian Orthodox
Church of St Michael (16th –19th century) and the Orthodox Church of St.
Parasceve (or Piatnickaya Church) (14th–19th century). In the direction of the
Cathedral, your eyes will catch the 63-metre-high bell tower of the white St
Johns Church of Vilnius University. In the distance, between the Old Town and
the Gediminas’ Castle Tower, the new Vilnius downtown stretches on the right
bank of the Neris River.
Take the stairs to go back to the parking lot where you left your car. Then
return to the route and stop on the corner of Subačiaus Street and Maironio
Street to admire another breathtaking panorama.

SUBAČIAUS AND MAIRONIO STREETS
Subačiaus Street was one of the oldest roads in Vilnius that led to distant
corners of Lithuania through the city wall (Subačiaus Gate). On the corner of
Subačiaus Street and Maironio Street, you will find a panoramic viewpoint.
14
Take a look around! Here you can enjoy the most beautiful panorama of Užupis.
Colourful houses embrace the elegant Church of St Bartholomew, which now
belongs to the community of Belarusian Catholics in Vilnius. Beside the main
bridge to Užupis stands the white Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Mother
of God, while behind it you may once again admire the Vilnius hills. On your
right, you may see Old Town houses that were once separated from the Tymo
Village by a medieval defensive wall. Located in the area down the slope is
cosy Kūdrų Park. An information stand set up at the scenic viewpoint for your
convenience will help you spot the churches of the Old Town.
To continue your journey, drive up Subačiaus Hill, make a left at the Missionary Church of the Assumption, and then make another left at the end of the
street. Rasų Street will lead you to the most beautiful cemetery in town (the
“Rasų kapinės” („Rasų Cemetery“) sign). You may park your car on Rasų Street
beside the cemetery.
RASŲ CEMETERY
Established at the beginning of the 19th century, Rasų Cemetery is one
of the oldest and the most beautiful cemeteries in Vilnius. It is the final
resting place for Lithuania’s social elite. Here rests Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, the famous Lithuanian painter; Balys Sruoga, a Lithuanian
writer who survived the hell of a German concentration camp; Jonas
Basanavičius, the father of the country and a signatory of the Act of Independence of Lithuania (1918); and many other artists, scientists, and
other figures of note. A popular place of interest here is the burial place
of the heart of Józef Piłsudski.
Drive a little further along the route and then turn onto Minsko Road. On
your left, you will notice Liepkalnis Hill and its ski slope (the “Liepkalnio
kalnas” (“Liepkalnis Hill”) sign). Turn around in Minsko Road and admire
the panorama.
– Liepkalnis Hill
Gravestones resembling architectural structures spread all over the burial ground among the old trees swaying on the rolling hills and valleys of
the cemetery. Distinctive gravestones, the columbarium of the Vileišiai
family, a neo-Gothic church, and a road dividing the old and the new
cemetery create a mystic feeling of a city of the dead. It is said that this
cemetery was once a place for pagan festivals and sacrificial rituals.

Opening hours: Monday–Wednesday 4 p.m.–8.30 p.m., Thursday–Friday 3 p.m.–8.30 p.m., Saturday–Sunday 9 a.m.–8.30 p.m.
At the intersection of Minsko Road and Žirnių Street in Liepkalnis, you will find
Laimis Hill, the highest point in Vilnius (235.12 m). This hill was named after
the great skiing enthusiast Laimis Janutėnas. He and other ski lovers raised
this hill 16 metres.
The top of this hill provides a stunning panorama where city meets nature. Pavilniai Regional Park, famous for its historical heritage and unique landscape
of the Vilnia River valley, lays to the north-east. You will definitely be captivated by its unique hills created by water erosion and springs that eventually
join to form the fast-flowing Kaukysa Stream. The unique, expressive contours
of Pavilniai Regional Park resemble of a giant fan.
Then look in the opposite direction to see a stunning harmony of the old and
the new Vilnius with the historical Old Town and the Hill of Three Crosses on
the one side and the new downtown of Vilnius with skyscrapers and residential
quarters separated by green areas on the other.
16
Return to Minsko Road and turn again at the intersection. On your way back,
turn left on Gurių Street and follow it to admire the woody landscape of
Vilnius’ hills and valleys on your left. Find the sign “Markučių dvaro sodyba“

MARKUČIAI MANOR HOUSE
m
In the Middle Ages, the picturesque suburb of Markučiai was a summer resort
for dukes of the Great Duchy of Lithuania. Russian railway engineer Aleksej
Melnikov bought a local estate in 1867 and presented it as his daughter Varvara’s dowry for her first marriage. Later, she married for a second time to
Grigory Pushkin, the younger son of the famous Russian poet Aleksandr Pushkin. The newlywed settled in Markučiai in 1899 and started a recreational
business that soon led to a village being established around the estate.
After her husband’s death, the strongest wish and concern of Varvara Pushkina
was to preserve the relics of poet Alexandr Pushkin. In her will, she left the
main estate building to the state and directed that it must be turned into a
museum to enshrine the memory of the poet.
Established in 1940, the museum hosts several exhibitions dedicated to the
great Russian poet. The museum provides the opportunity to watch films and
listen to music inspired by his works. Six rooms still preserve their original
ornate interior of that time.
Currently, the estate consists of the main building that houses the museum,
the cemetery of the Pushkin family, St Varvara Chapel, a bust of Alexandr
Pushkin unveiled in 1955, and a cosy park. The yard of the museum opens onto
a romantic panorama of the Vilnia River and Kaukysa Stream.
If you want to visit Belmontas Stud Farm and the nearby river dam, follow
Subačiaus Street and turn right at a viaduct. Drive a little further along Zarasų

Called French Mill after the nationality of its founder, the mill operated until
the end of the 20th century.
Over the years, the Vilnia River undermined the sloping river dam and turned
into a small waterfall. This place is therefore often called the Belmontas
Waterfalls.
Currently, this territory belongs to the Belmontas Recreation and Entertainment Centre. Its owners have rebuilt the old mill and the other buildings of
the complex.

PŪČKORIAI ESCARPMENT
Pūčkoriai Escarpment is an open scarp formed by the fast-flowing Vilnia River
(its height exceeds 65 metres and its width reaches 260 metres). It was declared protected in 1974. Experts who have analysed the layers of the escarpment have found traces of the Mesozoic era famous for dinosaurs and some
rocks with fossil remains of ancient fauna from the Jurassic Period.
The top of the escarpment gives one of the most beautiful views of the suburbs of Vilnius. The Vilnia River winds its way through a deep valley while the
buildings and ponds of a former estate and an old cannon foundry rest beyond
it. Further in the distance, you may see the river dam and the territory of the
former French water mill with many little bridges here and there.
If you look up at the steep Pūčkoriai Escarpment from the bottom of the valley,
it appears to be a beautiful sight by itself. The exposure uncovers its beauty in
many different places along the conveniently set Pavilniai Park walkway that
starts at the Pūčkoriai Hill Fort. To reach the mound, follow S. Batoro Street
and turn right at the “Pūčkorių piliakalnis” (“Pūčkoriai Hill Fort”) sign.
19
The hill fort is a starting point of the Pavilniai Park walkway. Here you may
choose one of several routes. If you follow the first route, you will pass the
sundial, the Pūčkoriai Estate, a cannon foundry dating back to the 18th–19th
century, and old ponds. Alternatively, you may first turn at the Belmontas
river dam and then admire the Pūčkoriai Escarpment on your way back along
the first route. Information stands and signs set up for your convenience will
not let you deviate from the route.

On the top of the steep 11–19 metre hill, the shape of which resembles a truncated cone, you may still find some marks of hill fort. The mound is overgrown
with trees but from the top of it you still can see the Vilnia River flowing at
the foot of the hill and the well-kept territory of Belmontas Recreation and
Entertainment Centre.
Pūčkoriai Hill Fort is an archaeological object of national importance. Articles
of flint and fragments of ceramics found beside the hill fort tell of a stone-age
settlement once located nearby. Nowadays, Lithuania may boast of around
800 mounds but Pūčkoriai Hill Fort is known to have been settled from the
very first centuries of our era till the 13th–14th century.
In S. Batoro Street, find the “Rokantiškių piliavietė” (“Rokantiškės Castle

12th century. His descendent Sofija Alšėniškė (15th century) was a founder of
the royal Jogailaičių dynasty. Surrounded by steep slopes and overhanging the
Vilnia Valley, the castle devolved to the Pacai family of nobles and was rebuilt
into a beautiful Renaissance palace. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during
the attack of the Moscow army in 1656. Only the remains of the ruins testify to
the great palace. Barrows surrounding the former castle safeguard a number
of graves dating back to the 6th–12th century. Not only people but also horses,
armament, jewellery, etc. are found buried here.
The castle hill gives a wonderful view of the Vilnia Valley. The Kučkuriškės
Paper Mill established in the 19th century (technical monument), the old river
dam, the ponds, and the Naujoji Vilnia settlement founded in the 19th century after the construction of the Vilnius to St Petersburg railway line may be
seen on one side, while the sleep banks of the Vilnia River and a hilly area
overgrown with fir trees lay on the other.
Drive further along S. Batoro Street and turn left at the traffic light to get to
Dūmų Street. Follow the main road and at the first intersection turn left to
Plytinės Street, where you will find a wonderful botanical garden (the sign
reading “VU botanikos sodas” (“VU Botanical Garden”)).

Established in 1974, one of the botanical gardens of Vilnius University is located on the outskirts of Vilnius, in Kairėnai. A rich variety of different plants
(approx. 9000 different species) flourishes in this unique place. The territory of the botanical garden, which occupies nearly 200 hectares, boasts a
fascinating landscape with rolling hills, valleys, ponds, and old trees. The
reconstructed buildings of the Kairėnai Estate and its restored English park
are a jewel in the crown of the botanical garden and must definitely be visited. Once you are there, do not pass by the garden of rhododendrons, the
collection of roses, and other collections. You may not only walk about in the
garden but also ride a horse, a horse-drawn carriage, or a sleigh in winter.
These services, however, must be ordered in advance.

The other botanical garden is in Vingio Park (since 1919). Currently, botanists
grow around 4000 different plant species and varieties in a vast 7.5 hectare
territory while another 900 are maintained in greenhouses. The garden is a
riot of colour in spring with tulips and hyacinths, a spree of lilies in summer,
and a parade of meadow saffrons and crocuses in autumn.
The very first botanical garden of Vilnius University was founded back in 1781
in the back yard of one Old Town house (Pilies g. 22) by botany Professor J.
E. Giliber. Later, the botanical garden was moved to Sereikiškių Park (to the
garden of the Bernardine Monastery) and flourished until the university was
closed. When the Czarist Russian army shut down Vilnius University, the botanical garden was also closed and neglected.
Follow the sign “Vaizdingas maršrutas” (“Picturesque Route”) until you reach
Kalvarijų Street. When there, turn right to Pušyno Street, which will lead you
to the first Station of the Cross (Kalvarijos). At the first station, you will find
an information stand with the full scheme of the Station of the Cross. The map
of the picturesque route and some other useful information may be found at
another stand.
On your way to Vilnius Kalvarijos, you will see a lot of young people walking
down Saulėtekis Avenue. This part of the city hosts a student campus with
faculty buildings, dormitories, and gyms of two universities.

Almost all the stations of this unique baroque ensemble were destroyed at the
order of the Soviet authorities but later rebuilt in 2002. This way of the cross
that reconstructs biblical events in the beautiful landscape of Verkiai Regional
Park is considered one of the great Calvaries of Europe.
In the old days, crowds of believers used to come to this way of the cross on
Whit Sunday. The festival used to begin at the Gate of Dawn and last for three
days. Nowadays, the first day is intended for priests and monks, the second
is the day for children and young people, and the third (Sunday) is Whit Sunday.
Follow Pušyno Street to get back to Kalvarijų Street. Then turn right and

Located on the territory of Verkiai Regional Park, Verkiai Manor House (36
hectares) is one of the most beautiful and the most valued classical ensembles
in Lithuania. The ensemble was designed in the second half of the 18th century by two Lithuanian architects, Martynas Knafkusas and Laurynas StuokaGucevičius.
In the 14th century, Verkiai was the possession of the grand dukes of Lithuania. After the Christianization of Lithuania in 1387, King Jogaila granted the
estate to the bishops of Vilnius, who owned Verkiai for more than 400 years.
The ensemble took its classical form at the initiative of Ignas Jokūbas Masalskis, a bishop who administered the estate at that time.
The palace and two other buildings once meant for servants now comprise the
centre of the remaining Verkiai Manor House ensemble. Besides those buildings, the manor house also encompasses a flourmill, a water pumping station,
a post office, upper and the lower landscape parks, and a number of ponds.
The upper park located on a steep bank of the Neris River yields a wide panorama of the river valley with the Saulėtekis student campus and the multi-
23
storeyed buildings of the districts of Antakalnis and Žirmūnai further in the
distance. Discover the beauty of the park all year round, especially in spring
and autumn when the ground gets decorated with fallen leaves and blue violets.
Turn back onto Žaliųjų ežerų Street and follow it until you reach the traffic
circle. In the circle, turn onto Molėtų Road and follow it for a while. Then
take a left turn to Baltupio Street and follow it until you see the “Jeruzalės
skulptūrų sodas” (“Jeruzalė Sculpture Garden”) sign. If you follow subsequent
signs (turn left on Mokyklos Street, take another left at Pievų Street, and then
yet another left on Lobio Street), you will arrive at a park of Lithuanian contemporary sculpture.
The gallery hosts a highly valuable collection of artistic works created by 20th century Lithuanian painters,
graphic artists, and sculptors of old and new generations. Gathered for more than 40 years, this collection
of Lithuanian modern visual art now exhibited in the
sculpture park and the gallery is considered a “gold
mine of Lithuanian art”.

Located in Karoliniškės, the TV Tower is the highest building in Lithuania
(326.5 metres high). If you are lucky enough to have good weather when you
visit Paukščių Takas, the TV Tower café that is located 165 metres above the
ground, you will be able to see the suburbs of Vilnius stretching dozens of kilometres away from it. Since the platform of the café constantly turns, you will
have an opportunity to see the entire city in 45 minutes (the platform turns
360° in this time) while sitting at your table.
The ground floor of the TV Tower hosts an exhibition dedicated to the events
of January 13, 1991 when the unarmed people who were protecting the TV
Tower resisted Soviet tanks. A bronze memorial entitled Aukojimas (Engl. sacrifice) and dedicated to the fighters for independence was unveiled in 2005,
and the streets surrounding the TV Tower carry the names of those people.
Since 2000, the TV Tower is decorated every year with Christmas lights for the
holiday season and becomes one of the tallest Christmas trees in the world.

101-hectare territory from Žvėrynas to Lazdynai with washed out ravines and
springs streaming down the banks of the Neris River.
The most attractive part of the reserve is the sharp slope of Plikakalnis Escarpment (height 58 m, length 650 m) with a beautiful panorama of the quiet
valley of the Neris River. The greenness of Vingio Park, located on the other
side of the river, embraces the white arc of a stage, the contours of a stadium,
and a Vilnius University botanical garden. Two islands dividing the river and

The wonderful scenery of Vilnius unfolds from the top of Tauras Hill, with the
city of the 19th–20th century on this side of the Neris River and the skyscrapers of the new city centre on the other.
Tauras Hill is a popular place among citizens, especially young people. Schoolleavers often come here to meet the sunrise after their graduation party and
romantic people climb the hill to admire sunsets and the city by night. In
winter time, people come here with snowboards and sleds.
Europos Square and the 126-metre-high, 33-storey skyscraper Europa, a symbol of the modern and rapidly growing Vilnius, were officially opened on May
1, 2004, the day of Lithuania’s accession to the EU.
Once the shopping centre and other offices surrounding Europos Square started business, the square turned into a popular place to meet and unwind. A
splashing fountain and multifunctional elements offering a place to sit down
create the feeling of a quiet and spacious oasis.
This square is often chosen for various entertaining and cultural events, festive gatherings, art actions, agitation campaigns, mass sporting competitions,
and a starting point for hikes.

The Museum of Energy is located in the premises of the first power plant in
Vilnius (1903–1998). The museum takes pride in its authentic power plant

Visitors may enter a boiler room, take a look at water pumps and twisty mazes

premises give a feeling of a mysterious underground maze.
The Museum of Energy, with a sculpture named Elektra (Engl. electricity) on

Objects off the Route
If you would like to visit a couple more interesting places that are not a
part of the route, we recommend visiting Vingio Park, Tuputiškių Serpentine,
the Centre for Young Nature Lovers, Antakalnis Catacombs, and the Colourful
Springs.
Vingis Park
Located in a bend of the Neris River and occupying 162
hectares of land, Vingio Park is a popular place for walks,
bicycle riding, or roller skating. The stage standing in the
centre of the park often hosts concerts, shows, and festivals. The park also includes a botanical garden and a stadium. The eastern part of the park between M. K. Čiurlionio
Street and the Neris River includes a cemetery for World
War I soldiers.
Tuputiškės Serpentine
This serpentine road in Pavilnys is the only one in Lithuania. It extends a little less than 1 kilometre and may look
funny to people who are used to driving such roads. Untrained drivers, however, may find the 120–150 metre long
paved segment truly scary.
Young Naturalists’ Centre
If you visit Pavilnys, you should also make a visit to the
garden of the Centre for Young Nature Lovers (30 hectares)
located on the breathtaking slopes of the Vilnia River. You
will not only find a huge variety of rare plants characteristic of Lithuania and other countries, but also a small zoo.
Antakalnis Catacombs
The interesting Antakalnis Catacombs — five bunkers — is
located at the end of Šilo Street. A cobblestoned road will
lead you there. Currently, almost all of these bunkers are
the realm of bats. A 7-kilometre-long path starting at the
catacombs leads through the picturesque Saulės Valley and
the Šveicarijos Ravines.
Colourful Springs
Under the Valakupių Bridge, on the right side of the Neris River, you will find the Colourful Springs. The water
of these springs contains a lot of minerals that make it
coloured.
If during your stay in Vilnius or its suburbs you came up with an object that you found interesting
or you were captivated by a panorama that is not included in the route, let us know about it.
Please email your suggestions to [email protected].
