O R G 1 from the president Each year, along with colleagues from PBS stations across America, I visit Washington, D.C., to meet with members of Congress to discuss public media and demonstrate the value of our service to the community. I leave these meetings with a renewed sense of the importance of our mission, and the realization that we need to do more to shape a healthier political climate to support public television. Unlike public broadcasters in other countries, American public television and radio stations receive limited government funding. At KCTS 9, federal funding through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is less than 10 percent of our budget. The majority of our support—more than 75 percent—comes from viewers like you. Your support is crucial to our ability to continue to serve as a trusted source for the arts, in-depth journalism, history and children’s programming, free of commercials and available to all at no cost. As 2015 comes to a close, we hope you will reflect on all the compelling and entertaining programs you’ve enjoyed on KCTS 9, and know how much we appreciate you. On behalf of all of us at KCTS 9, best wishes for the holidays and the coming year! Rob Dunlop, president & ceo [email protected] There’s still time to make your year-end gift in 2015! Your donation supporting thought-provoking programs on KCTS 9 is a wonderful way to end the year. It feels great to know you’ve helped bring NOVA, Nature, American Experience, Masterpiece and Mystery! to families across Washington, British Columbia and beyond. Support what you love at KCTS9.org/donate today. Saturday, 12/19, at noon. This recipe came to us from Mary Jane Gibbons of Seattle. She says that this sweet yet tart version of cranberry sauce was the result of her running out of sugar on a snowy holiday morning! Apple Tart Cranberry Sauce SERVES 6 1 1 B/e C/d B/c 1 12-ounce bag fresh cranberries cup sparkling apple cider teaspoon vanilla extract cup granulated sugar teaspoon pumpkin pie or apple pie spice pinch salt Rinse the cranberries and discard any withered berries or stems. Place in a saucepan with the apple cider and vanilla. Add the dry ingredients, stir, and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Once the mixture boils, reduce heat to a simmer and keep stirring so that the sugar does not burn or boil over. Once the berries have burst, turn off heat; cover and leave to cool. This recipe works best when it is made the day before and left to set overnight. It’s also delicious on waffles or pancakes!
