Harper Lee: To Kill A Mockingbird, and Go Set a Watchman
with Anna Katsavos
Tuesday, January 12 at 7:00 pm
Join Anna Katsovos as she offers an interactive discussion of the life of
Harper Lee, author of “To Kill A Mockingbird,” and the events leading to
the publishing of “Go Set A Watchman.” In Ms. Lee's long-awaited
novel, “Go Set A Watchman,” Atticus is not depicted as the kind, wise,
honorable man, an avatar of integrity who defended a black man
accused of violence in a small southern town filled with bigotry and
hatred in the 1930's. Katsavos' forum will evaluate what we can only
guess: the purpose of portraying Atticus as a racist, and the cause of
Scout's dismaying realization that her father attended a Klan Meeting,
and had abhorrent views on race and segregation. “Watchman” makes
for disturbing reading and for “Mockingbird” fans it is especially
disorienting.
Repatriating Art: Stolen Beauty
with Thomas Germano
Tuesday, January 19 at 2:00 pm
This lecture will discuss a number of important artworks that have been
taken from their owners or country of origin, including the Portrait of
Adele Bloch-Bauer by Gustav Klimt, "The Euphronius Vase", the Elgin
marbles removed from the Parthenon 200 years ago, works from the
Napoleonic plunder across Europe, the Jacques Goudstikker Gallery in
the Netherlands which was ransacked by the Nazis, the looting of
archaeological sites in Egypt, Guatemala, Iraq and Syria as well as a
host of artwork taken from the private homes of Holocaust victims during
the second World War. Rightful ownership of artworks and claims made
for the repatriation or compensation to the heirs of former owners or
even national museums in the country of origin is a hotly contested topic
today.
Current International Affairs

Monday, January 25 at 2:00 pm

The Music of Rodgers & Hammerstein
with Mel Haber
Tuesday, February 2 at 2:00 pm
Mel Haber gives an inside look at the dilemma Richard Rodgers had to
face with the death of his lyricist Larry Hart in 1943. He needed to find
someone new, and in Oscar Hammerstein he found a wonderful partner
with whom he continued his successful career for many years. Together
they wrote music for many Broadway musicals. Haber will play songs
from Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, The Sound of
Music, and others including “If I Loved You,” “Some Enchanted
Evening,” “Shall We Dance,” and more. A delightful evening is
guaranteed for all who attend.
Heroes to the End:
An Army Correspondent’s Last Days in Vietnam
with Jim Smith
Thursday, February 18 at 2:00 pm

newspaper and saw every major city in Vietnam from the Delta to the
Demilitarized Zone from 1971 to 1972. With the keen observations of a
young combat reporter, he reveals many acts of bravery and courage
which he will discuss from his book Heroes to the End.

• The Crash of 1929
Thursday, January 7 at 2:00 pm
In 1929 there were few critics of the
stock market; it seemed to rise without
limits. In fact, presidents and
economists alike confidently predicted
that America would soon enter a "New
Era" when everyone could be rich. But
when reality finally struck, the
consequences of such unbound
optimism shocked the world.
• The Massachusetts 54th
Thursday, February 4 at 2:00 pm
To celebrate Black History Month, we

archival photos of the Civil War to
uncover the real story of the heroic

PAT POLLACK, DEPARTMENT MANAGER
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge
The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, toddler, and/or
preschooler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes you can repeat books) before your precious one starts
kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have
read 365 books in a year, That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that
most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think (so get started).
The key is perseverance. To help, the Family Center will offer incentives. Come into Family Center and sign up
today. You will receive a packet and bag to get you started.
Registration for the following programs is required and limited. In order to register for a Family Center program, your child's date of birth
MUST be on file in the Family Center. A birth certificate or passport will be required as proof of age. Registration for all programs is age
specific. Sign up in the Family Center or by telephone with your Library card.

Many children are growing up with apps and digital media as part of
their lives, alongside reading, physical play, television and other
forms of entertainment and learning. Your child’s education doesn’t
have to stop after school. These games are made for your iPhone,
iPad and Android device and will keep your youngster’s mind active
outside the classroom. These apps are recommended by our
eParent author and Family Center Librarian, Leeanna Landouceur.
New apps will be highlighted each month in the eParent newsletter,
found on the Children’s page of our website @ www.poblib.org and
in the Family Center.
LEGO® Juniors Create & Cruise
Children age 4-7 can use their imagination to
create their very own LEGO® vehicles and
minifigures. Unlock virtual LEGO® sets that can
be built with a few easy touches - and which will
become part of the game's colorful 3D scenery
for your child's next drive-through. Create &
Cruise provides plenty of inspiration for real-life
LEGO® builds and imaginative play scenarios
you can talk to your child about - like why the
pretty princess is driving a police car that has
legs instead of wheels. This app is FREE.
BigSeed® is a multistep math game designed
to teach kids how to think . Word-free problem
solving makes it suitable for all ages. The goal
is to unfold the colored "seed" tiles to perfectly
fill all the empty cells. Sound easy? Try to get
through all ten levels. Up until now, this game
has only been available in schools. Created by
MIND Research Institute, the award-winning
creators of STMath®, this app is also FREE.

Each year the Friends are so grateful
to our community for helping make our
Book Sale fundraiser such an
enormous success. We thank our
neighbors and friends for your
donations of books, volunteering your
time, and for browsing our sale. We
would also like to express our great
appreciation to the Marriott Residence
Inn, Homewood Suites-Hilton, and
Four Points-Sheraton for their
generous raffle donations of an

overnight stay and scrumptious
President
breakfast buffet in their luxurious
facilities. We would also like to extend a special thank you to
Infinity Records Ltd. and High Fidelity Records & CD's, for their
kind donations of LP's for our new Book Sale section featuring
classic vinyl records.

Literacy Nassau Adult ESL Conversational Class
Our 17th Annual Community Appreciation Concert and Recital
was a smashing success with teen musical talent and performers
from the Plainview School District and the Chinese Cultural
Center. This Program affords the Friends an opportunity to thank
the community and showcase our extremely talented local youth.
We would like to give special thanks to the Community Service
department for all their invaluable assistance and support, and for
the wonderful custodial staff who worked so hard behind the
scenes this fall with our Book Sale and Concert.
We wish you a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Year!
