1/2 Frigo-Consulting Refrigeration Consulting & Engineering SELGROS TARGU MURES: NOW IMPLEMENTING BEST IN CLASS TECHNOLOGY For the new store concept, Selgros Romania (part of the Transgourmet Group) has chosen to implement a complete CO2 ejector booster together with a CO2 chiller. The new store is located in the middle of Romania, in Transilvania region. The new concept has a sales area of approx. 3500 m2. An advanced CO2 booster rack, which supplies 127 meters of medium and low temperature cabinets as well as 268 m2 of cold rooms and freezers with cooling capacity, has been installed. The booster rack is ready to deliver up to 154 kW for medium and 44 kW low temperature cooling capacity. The implemented gas and liquid ejectors in combination with parallel compressors allow to recover the energy release during the high pressure expansion and to reduce internal throttling losses. Driven by the pressure difference in the refrigeration system between highand receiver pressure, the ejectors convey liquid or gaseous refrigerant. The ejectors allow to increase system efficiency by raising the medium suction pressure of the positive temperature range from -6°C up to -2°C, depending on the evaporator performance. Thanks to expansion operation in partially flooded mode, the heat transfer properties of CO2 are increasing tremendously, thus allowing the increase of the evaporation temperature. Due to the liquid separator on the suction side of the negative temperature range, the evaporation pressure for the LT-side can be raised from -30°C to -26°C. All this is possible with the use of partially flooded evaporators. Energy savings reach up to 25% compared to traditional CO2-systems as has already been measured for more than one year in two similar installations in Switzerland. Figure 1 The pressure-enthalpy diagram shows the possible increase in the evaporation pressure and medium pressure thanks to the liquid ejectors as compared to a traditional system with parallel compression (dotted in red). The red arrow describes the pre-compression of gaseous CO2 by the gas ejectors. Figure 2 Selgros Targu Mures booster system – multi-ejector. 2/2 In addition to the high efficient refrigeration generation, these CO2 installations are providing heat recovery for tap hot water and for facility heating that covers the sales and office area. Using the waste heat, that previously was emitted to the environment, contributes to the reduction of the carbon footprint and the installation’s energetic balance. NOT ONLY REFRIGERATION Considering the legislative restrictions of the F-Gas regulation regarding refrigerants with significant impact on global warming and the progress in refrigeration technology, CO2 as a natural refrigerant has been established in commercial and industrial refrigeration applications. After an intensive collaboration between FrigoConsulting and ENEX (rack supplier), the first CO2 transcritical chiller for Air-Conditioning with overfeed evaporators is in operation and covers completely the sales and offices area.
