1. Jean Kidd believed in community, and this year, we do it for Jean.
The love Montclairians have for their town is also borne out in the plentiful
contributions of time and money to cherished traditions. May in Montclair began in
1979 as the brainchild of Betty Dallery, who died in 2013 at age 106.
A simple idea, really.
People and businesses give a few dollars and the May in Montclair Committee buys
over 30,000 tulip and daffodil bulbs. They are given to parks, churches, and schools
to plant in November for a May bloom. The Montclair Art Museum alone gets over
600 bulbs. Also, a free Calendar of Events book is published and distributed in April
all across Montclair Township. Nonprofit groups are invited to submit their May
events and volunteers sell advertising to businesses to defray costs.
Our Calendar of Events book contains original artwork adorning its cover, dozens of
free events, an updated local restaurant guide, summer town recreational events, tulip
sponsors and memorial dedications, and highlights supporting businesses.
Please continue to support this local beautification tradition in 2017 and beyond.
And don’t forget to visit www.mayinmontclair.org to view the book online and to
check out all of the latest events!

About Our Cover Artist
We are delighted to present a watercolor painting by
multi-media artist Adrienne Markowitz as the cover art for
May in Montclair.
“It’s such an honor to have my work chosen for the
2016 May in Montclair Calendar of Events, in large part
because I find the spontaneity and fluidity of watercolor
ideal for capturing the rich vibrancy of the subject matter.
A Montclair resident since 1972, I have had the joy of
experiencing the yearly tulip display since its inception in
1979 and then sharing that springtime splendor with my
three children. Now my two grandchildren come from
Ohio to join in the fun, so May in Montclair is meaningful
for me on several levels.”
Markowitz’s artistic roots run deep. Her uncle, Albert
Kotin, was a founder of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism along with Jason
Pollock, William de Kooning, and Franz Kline. Adrienne’s creativity is truly part of her DNA.
Ms. Markowitz is co-founder of Doubletree Gallery, the renowned cooperative gallery of fine
art and contemporary crafts that introduced and supported area artists and served as a salon
for artists and patrons in Upper Montclair for over a decade. Adrienne is also co-founder of
The Clay Center, a pottery studio now run by Carla Horowitz at Riker Hill Art Park, an Essex
County artists’ community in Livingston, where Adrienne continues to make pottery. She has
taught at the Montclair Adult School and the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art and is a
member of the Potters Guild of New Jersey.
While her first artistic pursuits were as a potter, she has increasingly turned to watercolor and
has honed her craft through private study. Ms. Markowitz has pottery and watercolor paintings
represented in private collections in New York, New Jersey, California, and throughout the
Midwest. She recently presented a one-woman show of her watercolors at the Montclair Public
Library Gallery.

BE PART OF THE MAY IN MONTCLAIR LOCAL BEAUTIFICATION TRADITION TO KEEP
THE TULIPS BLOOMING!
TULIPS ARE DONATED FREE THANKS TO YOU!
Each fall, the May in Montclair Committee purchases and distributes FREE of charge over 30,000
Holland tulip bulbs to the Township Community Service Department and volunteers from gardening
groups, park conservancies, houses of worship and business districts. Many hands from those
organizations help plant them for all to enjoy come spring.
YOUR donations to the Tulip Project are a very important part of the funds used to buy the bulbs
each year. Donors receive name recognition in the annual Calendar of Events book and website.
Dedications can also be made in honor or memory of a loved one.
For the past three years, the May in Montclair Committee has also made monetary contributions to
local park conservancies who use the funds to beautify the green spaces they maintain so lovingly.
We invite you to share in the Tulip Project along with many of your neighbors and be listed as a
sponsor of May in Montclair’s Calendar of Events. THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO DONATE:
Go online at www.mayinmontclair.org and click on “Tulip Project.” There you can use the

The Montclair Foundation
The Montclair Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that meet
health, educational, cultural, social service, and quality of life needs in the
greater Montclair community. It offers concerned citizens a way to ensure the
continuing vitality of Montclair and serves as a permanent conduit for effective
philanthropy.
Initiated by George Harris, Esq., and funded by two Montclair women, Mrs.
Katherine Lyman and Mrs. Edmund Stearns, The Montclair Foundation was
created in 1979. The founders, who were joined by Mrs. Virginia Sawtelle,
supported worthy nonprofit organizations in the Montclair community. The
organization was patterned after other successful community foundations, such
as the New York Community Trust. The founders were soon joined by other
concerned Montclair citizens who formed a board of trustees. The Foundation’s
commitment to and investment in the community has remained steadfast.
The Foundation ensures that the gifts of caring, supportive donors are prudently
managed and effectively used to better the community, The Foundation
preserves and invests all dollars that are entrusted to it. Income from the
Foundation’s investments is distributed semiannually by the Foundation’s
Board to worthy nonprofit organizations that have applied for support through
a rigorous grants process reviewed by the Foundation’s Grants Committee.
Detailed information on our grant program, such as funding criteria and filing
opportunities, is available on our website www.montclairfoundation.org.
In 1993, the heirs of Howard Van Vleck donated the Van Vleck home and
six-acre property to The Montclair Foundation to be preserved for public
enjoyment. Van Vleck House & Gardens is available for use by not-forprofit organizations, and the gardens, partially supported by a Green Acres
Endowment fund managed by the Montclair Foundation, are open to the
public year-round for display, education and research. The maintenance of
the house and gardens is managed by a volunteer board of management
overseeing the property, supported by a small staff to handle the daily running
of the organization. They have established working committees for handling
organization fundraisers, an active Friends programs, as well as education and
cultural programs. The Montclair Foundation has included May in Montclair
under its umbrella since 2012.
