March was quite a month! We had three
very successful affairs for which I would
like to thank and extend my congratulations to: Tony Horner
for a successful Communion Mass and
Breakfast, Red Smith
for a successful Blood
Drive, and Tim Murphy for a successful
St. Patrick’s Dinner
Dance. Two Rosensteel Knights took their Exemplification for
the Fourth Degree last month. And a great
big THANK YOU to Dan Gargano, our Recruitment Chairman, and all the Knights
who helped him with the two recruitment
weekends. This article goes to press before
we have any results, but I’m sure they will
be very successful.
Congratulations to Brother Ross Baccanari who was the honoree at our Third Degree last month. As usual, he was busy in
the kitchen and couldn’t figure out why he
was needed upstairs. It takes a lot to surprise him, but this time we did.
Congratulations also to Brian Graham on
becoming a member of the Million Dollar
Round Table. Check out the separate article
in this newsletter explaining how important
that is.
April promises to be another busy
month. It starts with the Maryknights Special Activity. This is the activity they do
each year to raise money for our Council.
Please show your support by coming to
“The Vaudeville Show” on April 5th. The
following day, April 6th , is our Annual
Birthright Dinner & Auction, another important event worthy of your support. April
13th is Palm Sunday, and we have two
events on that day. Upstairs will be the
Band Concert and downstairs will be the
Children’s Easter Party. As usual, the
Council will be closed on April 18th, Good
Friday. The Fred Horner Memorial Open
will be the day after Easter, Nun’s Appreciation Night will be on April 24th, and The
Cardinal’s Charity Ball will be on the 25th.
There are separate articles on each of these
events elsewhere in this newsletter. As
usual, there is something for everyone at Fr.
Rosensteel’s Council.

CHAPLAIN’S REPORT

When Jesus rose from the dead He appeared to His followers many times and in
many different places.
One thing is certain - He
could be seen, He could
speak, He could be
touched and on one occasion He ate a piece of fish
to prove that He was not
a ghost! Therefore Jesus
must have possessed
some kind of glorified
body. This is one
of the reasons why the Church has such a
high regard for the human person.
Although Jesus was the Son of God He
became one of us! Our humanity is
sacred whether here or in the here after.

DISTRICT DEPUTY’S REPORT
Joseph M. Feakes
As we begin the Fourth Quarter of this Fraternal Year, you will, no doubt, agree that the
time has gone by rapidly. There are many programs in motion at the council and state levels
that I am sure will keep us all very busy.
As busy as we are, let us always make time for prayer. These are troubled times. Let us
turn to our faith, our God, and His Blessed Mother for strength and guidance. Include an
element of faith and devotion in your activities as often as you can. Encourage everyone in
your faith community to become aware of the great need for prayer. Ask your Council
Chaplain for his input.
Someone once said, “I know that God will never give me any challenge that I can’t handle, I just wish He didn’t have so much confidence in me.” We are put to the test every day.
I encourage you to put into practice our principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. We have been given the ability to live up to these standards and I believe we can overcome the many challenges we face in today’s world.
As I indicated, there are many activities going on throughout the state. The State convention is next month. This is the time we elect our State Officers for the next fraternal
year. Have you thought about the men who are going to lead your council? Would you like
to be one of them? We are always looking for members who are willing to take positions of
leadership, who want to share their energy and ideas with their brother knights. The amount
of time you commit to an office or activity is up to you. Always know that you have the
support of your District Deputy, District Warden, the entire State Team, and your brother
knights. If you want more information, contact your Grand Knight or nomination committee.
I want to remind you of the district-sponsored art auction on May 9th. It will begin at 7:
pm at Father Rosensteel Council #2169. The cost is $10 per person, and tickets are available from your District Deputy or your Grand Knight. The proceeds from the auction will

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CHIEF EXECUTIVE PRAISES SENATE VOTE
BANNING PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION; CALLS IT FIRST STEP IN BUILDING A CULTURE OF LIFE
NEW HAVEN, CT < The United States Senate today passed the "Partial Birth
Abortion Ban." The following statement was
issued by Carl Anderson, supreme
knight of the Knights of Columbus:
The U. S. Senates passage today < by a
clear 64 to 33 bi-partisan majority< of a ban
on partial birth abortion gives new hope that
soon women and their unborn children will
no longer be threatened by this horrible and
gruesome procedure.
Partial birth abortion involves killing a
child in the most brutal way possible < partially delivering the child, puncturing open
its head and then removing the brain. For the
mother, partial birth abortion involves serious health risks, including risks to her future
fertility. Medically and morally, there is no
justification for allowing this procedure to
continue.
Over the years since becoming aware of
it, the vast majority of the American people
have consistently opposed partial birth abortion and called for it to be banned. The public debate over partial birth abortion has
made clear the inherently violent nature of
abortion and the fact that it always destroys a
human life. Only the abortionists who perform partial birth abortion for financial gain,
and their most extreme pro-abortion supporters, have opposed this ban. They in no way
represent the moral consensus of the
American people.
We now look forward to passage of similar legislation in the House, giving
President Bush the opportunity to fulfill his
pledge of signing a partial birth abortion ban
into law. We still have along way to go toward building what John Paul II has a called
the culture of life. Banning partial birth abortion is a good and necessary first step."

Banquet Sunday, March 16, 2003 at the University of Maryland, University College Inn
and Conference Center, College Park, Maryland. This year honorees were Former Master George Hanna, Sr., PSD and Former
Master Phillip L. Nelson, PGK. One hundred twenty six Third Degree Knights advanced to the Fourth Degree and became Sir
Knights under the direction of the current
Master of the Fourth Degree SK Edward P.
Srsic. Twenty nine of the New Sir Knights
are members of our own Cardinal Patrick A.
O’Boyle Assembly # 386 and its the same
Assembly that SK Edward P. Srsic, Master
of the Fourth Degree Archdioceses of Washington District is a member. I would like to
take this time to congratulate the New Sir
Knights. I would also like to thank all of you
and I hope you will take an active part in this
Patriotic Degree.
The Color Corps will meet Monday,
April 14, 2003 at Montgomery Council
#2323, at 8:00 p.m. If any new or old members of the Fourth Degree are interested in
the Color Corps you are welcome to attend
this meeting.
Thursday, April 17, 2003 is the
business meeting date for the Fourth Degree.
The Rosary will start at 7:30 p.m. followed
by the business meeting at 8:00 p.m. The

The April Family of the Month is in St.
Patrick’s Parish. He is one of the Alter
Servers at 6:30 a.m. daily
Mass and she is a former
CCD teacher. He likes
golf and she likes gardening; and they both are
members of the RMC
bowling league. He is a
retired sales rep for a
wood preservation company. She used to
teach school until she had seven children,
then nine grandchildren. She is a volunteer
“wheelchair pusher” when called upon by
their daughter who is a teacher at Stephen
Knolls School. He is the President of the
Retired Men’s Club and she is Historian for
The Maryknights. Congratulations to Tony

My congratulations and sincere thanks
to all the council members who have participated in any way and, to this point, have
made this fraternal year a success. However, there are about 10 weeks to go.
Membership, Membership, Membership,
some things never change. The beautiful
spring weather brings everyone out of their
homes and gives us the opportunity to
“show our stuff”. Many of your council
activities will be outdoors. Promote participation in these events, even from nonmembers. Wear your council hats, sweaters, and shirts. Display your council banner. Talk it up!

KNIGHT OF
THE MONTH
The April Knight
of the Month attends Mass at St.
Andrew’s and has
been a member of
the Knights of Columbus for over
thirty years.
He
has been Knight of
the Month many
times and has even been named Knight of
the Year. Even though he is older than dirt,
he refuses to join the Retired Men’s Club.
His knowledge of the rules of our Order and
the history of Fr. Rosensteel Council is
amazing. Many Grand Knights have sought
his counsel in difficult situations. He has
been a member of one of the oldest lodges of
the Sons of Italy for many years and continues to be very active. He is well known for
his cooking abilities and works in the
kitchen for many of our catering affairs. As
a matter of fact, he cooks for all of our social
meetings. He is in charge of our Council’s
hospitality room at the State Convention
every year. He also cooks every Wednesday
night for bingo. He likes to tease people and
give them a hard time, and would like to be
thought of as big and bad; but he is a real
cream puff. If you don’t think so, just ask
him about “Little Rossie”. Yes, that’s right,
the April Knight of the Month is my favorite
Italian (whoops, Scilian) Brother Ross Baccanari.

PRO-LIFE REPORT

PRO-LIFE SENTIMENT CONTINUES TO GROW
New polls show that Americans are becoming more and more
pro-life. The latest polls done by Wirthlin, Gallop and the Buffalo
News indicate little support for the 1973 Supreme Court decisions,
Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton, which legalized abortion on demand for all nine months of pregnancy.
The pro-life trend started in the mid 1990’s. Many see the publicity surrounding the horrific partial-birth abortion procedures as the
reason for the shift when people began to see some of the horrors of
abortion.
Groups such as NARAL continue to support the partial-birth
abortion procedure. The difference between partial-birth abortion
and infanticide is a couple of inches.
Although the foregoing description of PBA is santized, it is still a
horrible procedure, difficult to describe and present. Think how callous people are who promote, support and perform this procedure
just for the money. Their insensitivity reflects on all abortion.
BLOOD DRIVE RESULTS
Once again, Fr. Rosensteel Council had another successful Blood
Drive and Breakfast. Thanks to all participants! Forty units of blood
and one unit of blood platelets was donated to the Washington Hospital Center Blood Donor Services.
Special thanks to the Ralph Vallone Family, turning out en masse
to support this worthy cause. The next blood drive is scheduled for
September 6th – Thanks again.

COUNCIL ACTIVITIES

This past month was taken up with everyone listening to the radio or
watching TV to hear if school closings would effect their going to
work or another day of shoveling snow..--------March 02,2003 was an
event that was well attended.. The Communion Breakfast started with
the councils Chaplain, Father Perkins saying a Memorial Mass for
deceased members. Afterwards every one proceeded to the council
hall for an exceptional breakfast.The following volunteers are to be
commended on a job well done--Ross Baccanari, Jerri and Peter
Bonin, Steve Caffi, Frank Chite, Geof Conway, Becky Crowley, Elli,
Rick, Tony, and Wally Horner, Joe Knapeck, Trish Mahony, Alex
Matosian, Rose Mac Gillivary, Paul Neff, CeCe Sgarlata, Carl Spellacy and Gus kTerrier.
St. Patricks dinner dance was another event that bought out the
IRISH with no one being slighted as long as they claimed to be from
the Ole Sod. The Culkin Dancers performed to the pleasure of the
audience. A bit of Irish humor was displayed by Timothy
Murphy who wore the GREEN from head to toe.

Following the way of a man who cared, the photo above is a good
example of what Brother Pat Bowles does for the councils Equipment Loan Closet. The recipient of the wheel chair is Miss Colleen
Moores (shown here with Br. Pat Bowles and Gerri Bonin)and her
mother. Colleen was confirmed on Sunday March 16, 2003 at St.
John the Evangelist church. There was no happier person than Colleen to be transported in her new Set of Wheels. What a joy it was
to see the expression on the face of the Knight who was the donor.

COMMUNION BREAKFAST
We had a great turnout at the Communion Breakfast. 120 Knights with families
attended. Tony Horner and his crew did an
exceptional job serving this delicious breakfast. A special thanks to the following volunteers for a job well done; namely Ross Baccanari, Gerri and Pete Bonin, Steve Caffi,
Frank Chite, Geoff Conway, Becky Crowley,
Ellie, Rick, and Wally Horner, Joe Knapeck,
Trish Mahoney, Alex Matosian, Rose MacGillivary, Paul Neff, Ceci Sgarlata, Carl
Spellacy, and Gus Terrier.
NUNS APPRECIATION NIGHT
This special night will be celebrated at the
Council on Thursday, April 24th from 58PM. Volunteers are needed to help serve
the nuns to a sit-down dinner. Please wear
dark trousers, white shirt and a tie for this
special event. Also, wear your best smile!
LENTEN SEASON
We are already three weeks into the Lenten
season. Examine your conscience to see how
well you are doing with your good deeds and
sacrifices to others. Remember to pray for
our Priests, Brothers, and Sisters and for increased vocations. If we don’t pray for our
religion we are not going to get them.
SPECIAL BINGO FOR ST. CATHERINE
LABOURE
We were able to raise $1,000 for the grade
school for one nights work. Thanks to all the
Knights of Rosensteel Council who helped
make this bingo a success.
MARY’S WIDOWS
On Monday March 3rd, members
of Mary’s Widows held their first meeting
of the 2003 year. It took place at Riderwood Village. Thirty three ladies were in
attendance. They had a choice of either a
chicken or a salmon entrée. Members of
the Riderwood staff gave the ladies a tour
of the facility.
Ruth Ferraro, our Chairlady, is in
the second year of her term and is doing an
excellent job. Hostesses for this luncheon
were Dot Furnary and Joan Boicourt.
Marian Ruck and Louise Githens had
charge of the 50/50 which was won by
Lorraine Fitzpatrick. Arrangements for the
April luncheon, which will take place on the
7th, are in the hands of Aline Morin, Pat
Hilton, and Margaret Meredith.
Members of the telephone committee, the lifeline of our organization, are
Evelyn Dossey, Rose Emig, Aurora Hook,
Helen Jordan, Peggy Lerch, and Fran McIntyre. Don’t forget; any lady whose husband, at the time of his death, was a member in good standing of Fr. Rosensteel
Council is eligible for membership in
Mary’s Widows and is cordially invited to
join us at our monthly meetings.
On Sunday, April 20th, Holy
Mother Church celebrates the supreme feast
in her ecclesiastical calendar, the Resurrection of Our Lord from the dead. This event
is the cornerstone of our Catholic religion.
The first Nicene Council in 325 A.D. fixed
Easter on the first Sunday after the first full
moon on or after March 21st. The earliest
possible date of Easter is March 22nd; the
latest is April 25th.
May all members of the Fr. Rosensteel family experience the glory of the resurrection and pray together the words of the
Responsorial Psalm for Easter Sunday

GENERAL PROGRAMS

This month is the Convention
deadline (April 15th) for registering, at the
regular price, for all of the activities at the
Princess Royale Convention.. After the 15th
Admission fees will increase by $10.00. So
it is still time to join in on the fun. There
are still some rooms available at the Howard Johnson for the Convention. If you
haven’t sent in your reservation yet, and are
still planning to attend, time is running out.
I am sure I sound like a broken record, but our Bingo program still needs “a
few Good Knights and Maryknights”. Our
first night that we had a Maryknight volunteer, working the floor, we were able to
turn a decent profit. A sure sign of good

The Nominating Committee (Harry Rose, Bill Fenton,Joe Rosick) has presented the
following slate of officers for the RMC in the ‘03-’04 year. Con Heine as President, George
Gadbois as Vice-President, Jim Quinn as Treasurer and Ed Murray as Secretary. The floor
will be open for additional nominations and elections will be held at the luncheon on June
24th. Make sure you are there to cast your vote. The newly elected officers will take over in
July.
Twelve members of the Mary Knights and the Retired Men’s Club visted the Stephen
Knolls school for Handicapped Children located in Wheaton on Monday March 3rd. Our
visit coincided with the annual “Read Across America Day”. It’s a day in which parents
and grandparents are encouraged to go to their local schools and read books to the
children. Our group not only received a tour of the school to see how Tootsie Roll Money
was being used for Handicapped Students of the school we also got to read books to the
children. Principal Louis Berlin and his staff were very grateful for our taking time to visit
their school They also invited members .of Rosensteel Council to visit them again. We on
the other hand were deeply touched with the care that is being given by the school to
Handicapped Children and were very pleased at the way the Tootsie Roll money is being
used to help these children.
